Quotes

Jack Torrance: What are you doing down here?

Wendy Torrance: [sobbing] I just wanted to talk to you.

Jack Torrance: Okay, let's talk. What do you wanna talk about?

Wendy Torrance: I can't really remember.

Jack Torrance: You can't remember... Maybe it was about... Danny? Maybe it was about him. I think we should discuss Danny. I think we should discuss what should be done with him. What should be done with him?

Wendy Torrance: I don't know.

Jack Torrance: I don't think that's true. I think you have some very definite ideas about what should be done with Danny and I'd like to know what they are.

Wendy Torrance: Well, I think... maybe... he should be taken to a doctor.

Jack Torrance: You think "maybe" he should be taken to a doctor?

Wendy Torrance: Yes.

Jack Torrance: "When" do you think "maybe" he should be taken to a doctor?

Wendy Torrance: As soon as possible.

Jack Torrance: [mocking/imitating her] As soon as possible.

Wendy Torrance: Jack! What are... you...

Jack Torrance: You think his health might be at stake.

Wendy Torrance: Y-Yes!

Jack Torrance: You are concerned about him.

Wendy Torrance: Yes!

Jack Torrance: And are you concerned about *me?*

Wendy Torrance: Of course I am!

Jack Torrance: Of course you are! Have you ever thought about my responsibilities?

Wendy Torrance: Oh Jack, what are you talking about?

Jack Torrance: Have you ever had a *single moment's thought* about my responsibilities? Have you ever thought, for a single solitary moment about my responsibilities to my employers? Has it ever occurred to you that I have agreed to look after the *Overlook* Hotel until May the *first*. Does it *matter to you at all* that the *owners* have placed their *complete confidence* and *trust* in me, and that I have signed a letter of agreement, a *contract*, in which I have accepted that *responsibility?* Do you have the *slightest idea* what a *moral and ethical principal* is? *Do you?* Has it ever occurred to you what would happen to my future, if I were to fail to live up to my responsibilities? Has it ever occurred to you? *Has it?*

(Sharon cheers Helo on at the match.)

Starbuck: Damn it.

Anders, with her shirt: Looking for this?

Starbuck: Ahem. Yeah.

Anders, holding the shirt back: Kara, I want you back. I want our marriage back. I want a real marriage.

Starbuck: And what if I'm just not ready for that?

Anders, giving up the shirt: I don't know. Then I guess you'll never be. Maybe because I'm not what you really want after all.

Starbuck pauses, then grabs her dog tags: I'm late for the dance.

I think of that change now as being some kind of loss of context. Not so much a fragmentation of memory but a loss of context about memory. A key fact changed and so that causes my mind to ignore certain facts about before 6/13/2005.

That scene makes me think of that pond in the woods near the High Steel Bridge where I was sleeping in my Jeep there for about 2 weeks.

I started off sleeping there on a road that led off the dirt road that was more of a secondary road from the main dirt road and sometimes I would sleep in my Jeep while parked on that moutain ridge about 5 miles west from there. When it got too cold to sleep in my Jeep on that ridge, I would sometimes drive back to that tertiary road near that pond.

I was convinced that I needed to be there and that I was waiting on something but I had no idea what I was waiting for other than the lingering notion that somebody was going to tell me something.

I feel that is precisely how it has worked to.

There is just something to all this about me waiting for something to happen.

High Court Asked To Delay Clinton Harassment Suit

Lawyer: Wait Hurts Jones' Case

January 14, 1997 By Jan Crawford Greenburg, Washington Bureau.

WASHINGTON — Contending that a sexual harassment lawsuit against President Clinton already has consumed "a lot" of the president's time, his lawyer urged the Supreme Court Monday to delay the case until Clinton leaves office.

"I must say I don't find that terribly persuasive," Justice Antonin Scalia said. "We see presidents riding horseback, chopping firewood, fishing, playing golf, so forth and so on."

The justices also seemed disturbed by the alternative. They clearly were concerned about the president being at the mercy of a trial judge, particularly one who would not be sensitive to his schedule.

This might be it. Steel River is listed on there too. I remember on one of the first days I was up there, a helicopter flew near me. I figured it was probably a camera crew out to get some B-roll footage of the High Steel Bridge that they could use after they found my corpse in the river.

Chechaquo

This is an excerpt from To Build A Fire that made an impression with me early on and has felt especially relevant for the past few years:

But all this--the mysterious, far-reaching hairline trail, the absence of sun from the sky, the tremendous cold, and the strangeness and weirdness of it all--made no impression on the man. It was not because he was long used to it. He was a new-comer in the land, a chechaquo, and this was his first winter. The trouble with him was that he was without imagination. He was quick and alert in the things of life, but only in the things, and not in the significances. Fifty degrees below zero meant eighty odd degrees of frost. Such fact impressed him as being cold and uncomfortable, and that was all. It did not lead him to meditate upon his frailty as a creature of temperature, and upon man's frailty in general, able only to live within certain narrow limits of heat and cold; and from there on it did not lead him to the conjectural field of immortality and man's place in the universe. Fifty degrees below zero stood for a bite of frost that hurt and that must be guarded against by the use of mittens, ear-flaps, warm moccasins, and thick socks. Fifty degrees below zero was to him just precisely fifty degrees below zero. That there should be anything more to it than that was a thought that never entered his head.
