'Jihadi John': quiet football fan who developed thirst for war

Mohammed Emwazi, named by British and US media as the Islamic State executioner known as "Jihadi John", has been described as a quiet but intense young man who gradually developed a taste for war.
People who knew him quoted in British media reports said they could not reconcile their impressions of football-loving Emwazi with that of the "cold, sadistic and merciless" killer, as he is remembered by one former hostage.
Emwazi, 26, was born in Kuwait but the family moved to London when he was six years old and he grew up in North Kensington, a leafy middle-class area of west London where a network of Islamist extremists has has been uncovered in recent years.
As a child he was a fan of Manchester United football club and the band S Club 7, according to a 1996 school year book published by The Sun tabloid.
"What I want to be when I grow up is a footballer," he wrote in the book.
He went on to study information technology at the University of Westminster, which confirmed that someone by that name left six years ago and said it was "shocked and sickened" by the allegations.
His university records, including a photograph, were published by Sky News on Friday.

The first known photograph has emerged of Mohammed Emwazi - the Islamic State militant known as "Jihadi John" - as an adult.
Showing him with a goatee beard and wearing a Pittsburgh Pirates baseball cap, the image is revealed in student records from his time at the University of Westminster.
It comes after the 26-year-old who became the masked face of the notorious terror organisation was identified as the figure seen in several videos of hostages being beheaded.
Sky News can also exclusively reveal details of Emwazi's academic achievements during his stint at the university in London's Cavendish campus, between 2006 and 2009.
According to the document, he passed all but two of the modules in his Information Systems with Business Management degree
The record shows he was awarded a "condoned credit; retake" status for modules in Business Information Systems and Managing Business Organisations.
Earlier, a photograph had emerged showing the smiling face of a eight-year-old Emwazi sitting with classmates at St Magdalene's Church of England School in west London.
An unnamed classmate told The Sun newspaper that Emwazi, who reportedly came from a devout family, was the only Muslim in the class and would demonstrate Arabic writing to the class.
After completing his degree he went on to become a computer programmer before travelling to Syria in 2013 and later joining IS.
Advocacy group CAGE said the Kuwaiti-born Briton was "extremely kind" and "extremely gentle" but had been harassed by the UK security services.
Research director Asim Qureshi said Emwazi's family was "in utter shock" that the "beautiful young man" had joined the militant group.
Prime Minister David Cameron defended the security services, insisting Britain will do "everything we can" to bring terrorists to justice.
"They are having to make incredibly difficult judgements, and I think basically they make very good judgements on our behalf," he said.

GARTH: Spock is not only a more logical man than you, Captain, but a more intelligent one, I'm sure. I shall establish a rapport with him.
(An alarm alerts him to the approach of the Vulcan.)
GARTH: Fascinating. Your Vulcan friend is a very ingenious fellow. This could be most amusing.

MCCOY: It won't work, Scotty. They'd have to cover thousands of miles through poisonous atmosphere before they'd ever reach the asylum.
SCOTT: Aye, you're right. Even if they made it, they couldn't carry anything powerful enough to break through the asylum dome. Only the ship herself could do that.
MCCOY: Probably kill Jim and Spock.
SCOT: Doctor, they may already be dead.
