Former Olympian Bruce Jenner was in one of the cars involved in a four-car crash that killed one woman in Malibu, Calif., Saturday afternoon, Los Angeles Police say. Seven other people sustained minor to moderate injuries.
Jenner's publicist, Alan Nierob, says Jenner was unhurt, but offered no additional details.
Police deputies added that Jenner was not being chased by paparazzi at the time, contrary to earlier reports.
The crash occurred at approximately 12:12 pm Pacific time in the town of Malibu, at the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Corral Canyon Road, said Sgt. Matthew Dunn of the Los Angeles Police Department.
Jenner was going north when his black Cadillac Escalade rear-ended a Lexus sedan that had just struck the back of a black Toyota Prius, Los Angeles County sheriff's Sgt. Philip Brooks said. The Lexus veered into oncoming traffic in a southbound lane and collided head-on with a black Hummer.
The driver of the Lexus — a woman in her 70s — was pronounced dead at the scene.

Origin of the company name
The front company appears to have based its name on the late Benjamin Brewster Jennings, a president and founder of the Socony-Vacuum oil company, which would later become Mobil Oil and which then merged to become part of ExxonMobil. This also reminds me that Microsoft had me assigned as a corporate contact for IBM Consulting Services when I worked there. I remember my IBM commenting about how I was the "guy to know" or words to that effect and I wondered why he was telling that to other IBM employees considering the companies we worked for.

Controversy deepens over inquiry into leak of CIA officer's identity

WASHINGTON — President Bush's aides promised yesterday to cooperate with a Justice Department inquiry into an administration leak that exposed the identity of a CIA operative, but Democrats said the administration cannot credibly investigate itself and called for an independent investigation.
White House officials said they would turn over phone logs if the Justice Department asks them to. But the aides said Bush has no plans to ask his staff members whether any of them played a role in revealing the name of an undercover officer who is married to former Ambassador Joseph Wilson IV, one of the most visible critics of Bush's handling of intelligence about Iraq.
An administration official told The Washington Post on Saturday that two White House officials leaked the information to selected journalists to discredit Wilson. The leak could constitute a federal crime, and intelligence officials said it might have endangered confidential sources who had aided the operative throughout her career. CIA Director George Tenet has asked the Justice Department to investigate how the leak occurred.
National-security adviser Condoleezza Rice said on "Fox News Sunday" that she knew "nothing of any such White House effort to reveal any of this, and it certainly would not be the way that the president would expect his White House to operate."
She also said the White House would leave the investigation in the hands of the Justice Department, calling it the "appropriate channel now."
White House press secretary Scott McClellan said the Justice Department has requested no information so far. He said the White House will cooperate with any request from investigators.
Asked about the possibility of an internal White House investigation, McClellan said, "I'm not aware of any information that has come to our attention beyond the anonymous media sources to suggest there's anything to White House involvement."
The controversy erupted over the weekend, when administration officials reported that Tenet sent the Justice Department a letter raising questions about whether federal law was broken when the operative, Valerie Plame, was exposed. She was named in a column by Robert Novak that ran July 14 in The Post and other newspapers.

Commander James, Commander Davis, members of the American Legion:
The Congress of the United States and the American Legion have made me very happy by sending me this bill today to sign. This measure will allow the veterans of Vietnam to become members of the American Legion.
I am hopeful that other bills will be passed opening the ranks of our veterans organizations to those who are so faithfully serving their country today. For the struggle for freedom in Vietnam today is as important as any conflict in which our countrymen have ever engaged at any time in the history of our Nation.
This bill before me sets a new date of eligibility for membership, and that date is from the Bay of Tonkin incident.
The American Legion, with its membership of over 2 1/2 million, gave unanimous support to the resolution requesting that their charter be amended by the Congress. This is the third time in history that the Legion has asked for such an amendment. It is testimony to their gratitude for the patriotic service being rendered in defense of America, and the entire free world.
I think if there is any question in anyone's mind how we feel about our fighting men, and of our determination to see this struggle through to a successful conclusion, that this emphatic action by the Congress, with the support of the American Legion, has answered those questions and made our stand of unity completely clear.
We know of the sacrifices, and we know of the deeds of valor, and we know the devotion of our servicemen. We also know the necessity for the conflict in Vietnam. We have not sought this conflict. We have not forced our will upon anyone. But in our earnest desire for peace, we have chosen the path of firm resolve.
We have come to the defense of other human beings threatened with the loss of their basic human rights. That is really the same battle for which the Legionnaires have fought three times before in this century. So I think it is quite appropriate that they should open their rolls to those who carry our flag today.
I noticed that Captain Roger Donlon, the Medal of Honor winner in Vietnam, in his speech before the Legion convention here Tuesday, expressed the hope that this bill would be passed and signed so that he could join the Legion. So I know you will have another illustrious member as soon as my name is affixed to the bill.

President Bush commuted the sentence of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby yesterday, sparing Vice President Cheney's former chief of staff 2 1/2 years in prison after a federal appeals court had refused to let Libby remain free while he appeals his conviction for lying to federal investigators.
Bush, who for months had sidestepped calls from conservatives to come to Libby's aid, broke his silence early yesterday evening, touching off an immediate uproar from Democrats who accused the White House of circumventing the rule of law to protect one of its own.
The president announced his decision in a written statement that laid out the factors he had weighed. Bush said he decided to "respect" the jury's verdict that Libby was guilty of four felonies for lying about his role in the leak of a covert CIA officer's identity. But the president said Libby's "exceptional public service" and prior lack of a criminal record led him to conclude that the 30-month sentence handed down by a judge last month was "excessive."

Judge tosses out ex-spy's lawsuit against Cheney in CIA leak case
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit by outed spy Valerie Plame and her husband against Vice President Dick Cheney and other top Bush administration officials.
A judge threw out the lawsuit from ex-spy Valerie Plame and husband Joseph Wilson.
Plame had accused members of the Bush administration of leaking her identity. To knowingly disclose classified information to unauthorized recipients is a crime, and Plame's position was classified.
U.S. District Judge John Bates said the lawsuit raises "important questions relating to the propriety of actions undertaken by our highest government officials." But in a 41-page decision, he found Plame and her husband, former U.S. Ambassador Joseph Wilson, failed to show the case belongs in federal court.
Plame's identity as a CIA operative was exposed in July 2003 after Wilson publicly challenged a key argument in the Bush administration's case for the invasion of Iraq. The couple argued the disclosure destroyed her career and was done to retaliate against Wilson, who said the administration had "twisted" the evidence used to justify the invasion.
Bates, a Bush appointee, agreed with defense arguments that federal law protects Cheney and the other top administration officials from being sued for actions taken as part of their official duties.

The Chinese Can't Stage a Decent Show Trial
The trial of the decade — against former party heavyweight, Bo Xilai – has become a disaster for the new Chinese leadership. The charismatic Bo’s forceful assertions of innocence against charges of petty corruption and misuse of office have enlivened his supporters and made his accusers look weak and petty.
Joseph Stalin mastered the political show trial. His first, against sixteen of Lenin’s deputies and Trotsky allies, lasted five days. His second, against seventeen party officials, lasted a week. The third, against the twenty-one members of the “Bloc of Rightists and Trotskyites,” lasted almost two weeks in the presence of invited diplomats and journalists.
Stalin orchestrated his show trials as carefully staged rituals. In each, the defendants’ confessions were extracted well before the trial. They dutifully confessed in public court to horrendous crimes of murder, espionage, and treason. Official newsreels showed the repentant traitors begging for mercy. With few exceptions the defendants received the death penalty and were shot within a day or two of the trial. The Soviet press condemned the “mad dogs” in incessant drumbeats of vitriol. Factory workers organized “spontaneous” meetings to demand the supreme penalty. Confused diplomats and journalists, many of whom did not understand Russian, sat in the court room as interpreters whispered in their ears. They concluded that the show trials had exposed real plots against a Soviet Union, which had narrowly averted overthrow by sinister forces from within and without. What a success for Mr. Stalin!

Somewhere in my journal I wrote about something I did at Microsoft back in the year 2002. Back in the year 2002 I made copies of my performance evaluations from the United States Navy between 1984 and 1990 and posted images of those documents, as well as the letter of commendation from Chandler, on a shared folder I created on the Microsoft corporate internal network and I told my co-workers about it. I know people read the documents because Sharon asked me about it. Blair Shaw told me he spoke about it with a friend of his from the USS Abraham Lincoln over there across the bay from Seattle or where ever it was. That was about the time I went out and purchashed that flashy brand-new titanium Litespeed road racing bicycle from REI in Redmond.

WASHINGTON — The leak of a CIA operative's name also has exposed the identity of a CIA front company, potentially expanding the damage caused by the original disclosure, Bush administration officials said yesterday.
The company's identity, Brewster-Jennings & Associates, became public because it appeared in Federal Election Commission records on a form filled out in 1999 by Valerie Plame, the case officer at the center of the controversy, when she contributed $1,000 to Al Gore's presidential primary campaign.
After the name of the company was broadcast yesterday, administration officials confirmed that it was a CIA front.

All right. What are you hearing about reaction to Arnold Schwarzenegger and this -- these allegation? How is it affecting his campaign?
ROBERT NOVAK, CNN CO-HOST, "CROSSFIRE": Well, believe or not, the Schwarzenegger overnight tracking shows he is up 1.5 points. He now, according to their figures, leads Bustamante 42 percent to 28 percent, and in the recall, Gray Davis is down 54 to 38. Now, there's possibility that as the time goes on, that this could have a reverse effect. But the immediate effect, and that's confirmed by one public poll, shows it has helped Schwarzenegger. They think it's unfair to come up with this kind of attack so late in the campaign.
WOODRUFF: Again, these are internal tracking polls in the Schwarzenegger campaign.
All right, moving on to the story you've been very aware of this week, and that is that the administration officials leaked the name a CIA operative to you and perhaps to other journalists.
First of all, you've got some information now about Joe Wilson the former ambassador. The money that he's...
NOVAK: I don't -- I think it's interesting, (UNINTELLIGIBLE) important. But I deal in interesting things a lot. Joe Wilson, the -- everybody knows he has given campaign contributions in 2000 to both Ford -- I mean to both Gore and to Bush. He gave twice as much to Gore, $2,000, $1,000 over the limit. The government -- the campaign had to give him back $1,000. That very day, according to his records, his wife, the CIA employee gave $1,000 to Gore, and she listed herself as an employee of Bruster, Jennings and Associates (ph).
There is there no such firm, I'm convinced. CIA people are not supposed to list themselves with fictitious firms if they're a deep cover. They're supposed to be real firms, or so I'm told. So it adds to the little mystery.

Brewster Jennings & Associates was a front company set up in 1994 by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) as a cover for its officers. The most famous is Valerie Plame, a "covert employee of the CIA" whose employment status was classified and whose then-classified covert identity was published in a syndicated newspaper column by Robert Novak on July 14, 2003.

According to Walter Pincus and Mike Allen, in the Washington Post of October 4, 2003, Brewster Jennings & Associates was "the obscure and possibly defunct firm" at one time listing Valerie Plame as a staff member:
Plame's name was first published July 14, 2003, in a newspaper column by Robert D. Novak that quoted two senior administration officials. They were critical of Plame's husband, former ambassador Joseph C. Wilson, IV, for his handling of a CIA mission that undercut President Bush's claim that Iraq had sought uranium from the African nation of Niger for possible use in developing nuclear weapons.... The name of the CIA front company was broadcast yesterday [October 3, 2003, on CNN] by Novak, the syndicated journalist who originally identified Plame. Novak, highlighting Wilson's ties to Democrats, said on CNN that Wilson's "wife, the CIA employee, gave $1,000 to Gore, and she listed herself as an employee of Brewster-Jennings & Associates."
Whereas, in his appearance on CNN on October 3, 2003, Novak insisted, as quoted by Pincus and Allen the next day: "'There is no such firm, I'm convinced. CIA people are not supposed to list themselves with fictitious firms if they're under a deep cover – they're supposed to be real firms, or so I'm told. Sort of adds to the little mystery,'" the Washington Post reporters disputed Novak's conviction:
In fact, it appears the firm did exist, at least on paper. The Dun & Bradstreet database of company names lists a firm that is called both Brewster Jennings & Associates and Jennings Brewster & Associates. The phone number in the listing is not in service, and the property manager at the address listed said there is no such company at the property, although records from 2000 were not available.

Gates Foundation breaks ground
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will build its $500 million headquarters across from the Seattle Center.

The global aims of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation took shape Tuesday in the heart of Seattle, where what was once a Native American ceremonial camp is becoming the $500 million headquarters of the world's largest charitable foundation.
The foundation broke ground on its 900,000-square-foot campus, a symbol of interest in philanthropy and global health in the region.
Seattle has made its mark through aviation and information technology, and the Gates Foundation aspires to make global health the next world-changing industry with roots in the Pacific Northwest, foundation co-chairwoman Melinda Gates said. As she spoke, construction workers began tearing up pavement on Fifth Avenue across from the Space Needle.
The 1962 World's Fair brought a new global identity to Seattle, she said, and since then, "a global outlook is really at the core of what Seattle stands for."
With more than $1.5 billion a year from Warren Buffett's gift now pouring into the Gates Foundation
