I have also been thinking more about 1986 and 1987. I think a lot of details I remember from that time period have some kind of gothic representation to them, in that I was very close to death during that time, more so than at any other time. The detail that stands out is when I was in the movie theatre watching “Top Gun” with Diane Broch. She was cold but I didn’t have a jacket to give her. I think that Diane represents death somehow, but not really death personified, rather more of a humorous representation. Her initials of D.B. may represent “dead and buried,” especially since she lived in a town named Arlington Heights, which reminds me of Arlington National Cemetery. I can almost hear someone that knew me in 1986 talking with someone else who knew me and wondering what happened to me and making some kind of joke that I was dead and had a dead girlfriend. Today I remembered a letter she sent me in 1987 after I broke up with her shortly after I reported to the Wainwright. I found myself wondering if she had seen the newspaper reports about the Wainwright almost getting hit by the Iranian anti-ship missile, but I didn’t hear anything else from her. Anyway, in the registered letter she sent me, she was angry and wrote about some money she had given me to buy a .30-06 hunting rifle and she wanted the money back. I haven’t quite figured out what that is supposed to mean. I remember she also wrote about how she was angry that I had just treated her like a “piece of meat” all that time, reinforcing my theory that she someone how reflects how close I was to death, maybe I was surrounded by corpses at some point, I’m not sure. Maybe they actually did bury me at some point when I was a captive but I dug my way out. Or maybe it is just symbolic of returning from a very near death situation.

After I awoke from a nap this afternoon, I felt compelled to write about a dream I had just before I woke up but then did not write about it. I started feeling that need to write about it again but may have forgotten some details by now. I have started thinking that the dreams I have just before waking up mean something in their own right.
In the dream, I was wearing a Navy uniform. I didn’t have anywhere to go though and seemed to be just walking around what I guess was a Navy installation. I decided to go into a building to ask if another Commander was still there even though I knew he wasn’t there. I spoke to a Navy enlisted person who appeared to be an Airman judging by his three green stripes although I couldn’t make out his rating symbol. He asked me a question but I didn’t hear his question and I asked him to repeat it by saying “Sir?” to him with an inquisitive tone. He asked me how I could not know that the other Commander was already deployed and I said something about how I just did not know. I left and walked down and out on some kind of spiral staircase, although that part isn’t that clear and I find myself wondering about that part. There was another spiral staircase ahead of me, there seemed to be dual staircases on either side of the front door to that building, and a Lt. j.g. came down the other side. I want to say he was someone I should know but I can’t picture him as someone I knew. I want to say it was him that spoke something to me at that point but I also want to say the voice came from behind me. He said, or someone else said, something about me being “a little off.” I wondered if he meant that I was wrong about some of these details. Then I wondered if he meant I was a little crazy, but I think I started thinking that last one after I woke up. I think after he or someone said that, it made me start thinking about the uniform I was wearing. I found myself thinking after I awoke that it seemed to be a Marine Corps officers dress uniform. I seemed to be wearing the dark blue Marine uniform with white pants. But I am confused about one detail as it seemed I looked to my left shoulder and saw Navy shoulder boards with Captain stripes. Or was it just an epaulet, I am not sure, but there was a pair of sunglasses clipped under it. I was walking down the sidewalk and there were two people ahead of me. One may have been that Lt. j.g. Another was a female officer, Navy I guess. Somewhere along there I realized I had forgotten to wear the appropriate cover for that uniform and realized that I was still wearing a ball cap, although I had actually taken it off as I went outside. I realized I couldn’t return anyone’s salute. Then I started thinking that the ball cap had USS Wainwright printed on it but I don’t remember actually looking at it and I may remember that detail in the sense that someone was reading details to me, they were telling me what the name was on the cap. I also remember that it had a frayed bill just like the Nike cap I have now. I remember I was walking very slowly. It was hard to walk and I was limping. I have thought several times before that if I do start wearing the uniform again, I should use a cane until I get my leg back in better shape. Then I was in a parking garage and I had to cross a street into a parking lot, I guess to find my car. I am still not sure about the uniform and I remember it seemed to be a single-breasted coat-type of uniform but the Navy uniform is double-breasted. But the Marine uniform doesn’t have shoulder boards as far as I know. That is what I thought the j.g. was telling me, that I only had a few minor details wrong, such as I had transferred over to the Marines at some point. I have written about that in the past too, but I am not sure what it means.

I was thinking later that the junior officer, who I thought was obviously Navy, was wearing the same uniform as I. Maybe it was an old USN uniform, maybe a style that was worn in the USN over one hundred years ago.
One of those details I forgot to write is at the end of that dream. As I was walking to the parking lot, I guess to my car, I was planning to stop at the supermarket to get some ice cream.

The 1870’s were times of great European military activity. Sweeping victories of emerging imperial powers both on land and sea captured the imagination of the public. Not only were tactics copied but uniforms as well. A new service coat was introduced in 1877 and was unique in that it was the first time officers’ coats utilized a military style rather than a civilian cut. It was a single breasted, tight fitting coat with a fly front and standing collar. It remained in effect until after WW I.

I wrote the other day about the runway at Kennedy Space Center is number 33. As I understand it, that means that the compass of an aircraft would indicate 33 degrees when it was lined up to land on that strip.

I was thinking more about why the lead ship of the Perry-class FFG would be commissioned 2 years earlier than the last ships. One possible reason that developed in my mind was that, for some reason, some one in the Navy wanted to commemorate the lead ship with my return from Mars. The Perry’s were probably considered state-of-the-art, leading edge, futuristic, etc. etc. at the time, not unlike the Aegis destroyers of today. I also find myself remembering when I first heard I was being assigned to the Taylor and I didn’t know what was an “FFG.” My roommate in Orlando told me it was a “Fast Frigate.” I wondered if that means we had “slow frigates.” Recently I read a Reagan speech that referred to the Perry’s as “Fleet Frigates,” so there seems to be some confusion about the designation of “FF” for frigates. As far as I know, there really is not a secondary meaning for the “FF” designation, as in either “Fast Frigate” or “Fleet Frigate.” We just use though double letters for every class, such as FF, or DD, or BB for surface warfare vessels. The only exception is the cruiser class, so that tells me that the reasoning was that U.S. Navy ship designations should also use two-letter designations. Since the modern USN cruisers are always guided-missile platforms, their designation will always include the “G” and therefore only need one “C.” As far as I know, there are still non-guided missile frigates in service, so those would still need the “FF,” but I did read somewhere that there are no plans to create a new class of frigates. The destroyers will probably always be guided-missile platforms, but it seems unusual to designate them as “DG.” I have been thinking more about battleships too and wondering about the practically of such ships. I think my forgotten military experience probably is biased against large ships and that probably causes concern for those in the Navy that worry about me setting strategic direction for the Navy. I would tend to view battleships as anachronisms due to the success of airpower. But somewhere in my mind, I think there is almost something like a debate going on about that subject. I think if I were in a position to set strategy, I would not rule out creating a new class of Battleships.

I had some kind of important dream last night but can’t remember it now. It was some kind of important message. I want to say it was something I should feel proud of but that doesn’t really explain. It was a positive message but I can’t articulate what it was because I don’t remember the dream. But I have learned to trust my instincts on such clues so I am sure I will soon understand it all.

Hey, Jackson, what are you doing?
DANIEL
(nonchalant, not looking up)
Oh, just trying to figure out the location of Merlin's weapon so we can find it in time to defeat the Ori, hopefully save our galaxy. You?
MITCHELL
We're going for Szechwan. You want to come?
DANIEL
No, I'll pass.
[Mitchell gestures as if it's Daniel's loss, then starts to leave.]
TEAL'C
How is your search coming, Daniel Jackson?
[He gestures for Mitchell to stop, and he does. ]
DANIEL
Slowly, but I think I'm onto something.
(gesturing)

[He finally looks over at them in the doorway. Mitchell tilts his head as if reluctant, then he and Teal'c walk over and stand beside Daniel. Daniel changes the display on his computer terminal. A star map appears.]

These are the locations of the planets that Arthur and his knights set off to in their quest for the Sangreal. Castiana, Sahal, and Vagonbrei. Now we searched all three and came up empty, so I thought it was a dead end, until I noticed this…
[He changes the display to show the relative positions of the three worlds. He hits a button that shows equal-length lines between the planets, when projected onto a 2-dimensional plane.]
DANIEL
Their coordinates form an equilateral triangle. Now, add their departure point, the Camelot planet, and you get…

MITCHELL

DANIEL

INT—VALA'S QUARTERS
[Vala awakens suddenly. She is wearing a green gel mask around her eyes. She throws back the covers and gets up very quickly.]

I have the answer! I figured it out. Whoo.
[She whisks the mask up onto her head. Daniel takes note of her but doesn't really react.]

Those three planets are part of a puzzle.
DANIEL
(uncapping his pen)

VALA
The pyramid is a visual representation of "three into one." Three addresses into one. That's what Morgan was trying to tell you.
