[I'm not sure if this is the same article, but one day I was talking to someone that sat across the aisle from me at Microsoft on this topic. I think it was the day after the company meeting when John Connors was playing cowboy and talking about "his brand" and stuff and was saying that an Enron could never happen at Microsoft. The next day I read something about this unearned revenue stuff that left me wondering if that was true or not. From what I understood, this unearned revenue was basically a cookie jar that could be used to balance out the revenue which in turn stabilized the stock price. Sounds like a great plan, but then what is the point of accounting and reports and all that financial stuff? I probably wouldn't have even been thinking about this stuff if not for being a stock holder and wanting to know that my underwater stock options would be worth something before they expired.

Expedition 61 Flight Engineers Christina Koch and Andrew Morgan of NASA concluded their spacewalk at the International Space Station at 2:23 p.m. EDT. During six-hour and 45-minute spacewalk, the two NASA astronauts continued the replacement of nickel-hydrogen batteries with newer, more powerful lithium-ion batteries on the far end of the station’s port truss.
Astronauts also were able to accomplish several get-ahead tasks setting up for the next spacewalk.
These new batteries provide an improved power capacity for operations with a lighter mass and a smaller volume than the nickel-hydrogen batteries. On Oct. 16, Morgan and NASA astronaut Jessica Meir are scheduled to venture outside for another spacewalk to continue the battery replacements on the first of the two power channels for the station’s far port truss. The following spacewalks dedicated to the battery upgrades are scheduled on Oct. 21 and 25.

NASA Commits to Future Artemis Missions With More SLS Rocket Stages
NASA has taken the next steps toward building Space Launch System (SLS) rocket core stages to support as many as 10 Artemis missions, including the mission that will carry the first woman and next man to the Moon by 2024.
The agency intends to work with Boeing, the current lead contractor for the core stages of the rockets that will fly on the first two Artemis missions, for the production of SLS rockets through the next decade. The core stage is the center part of the rocket that contains the two giant liquid fuel tanks. Towering 212 feet with a diameter of 27.6 feet, it will store cryogenic liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen and all the systems that will feed the stage’s four RS-25 engines. It also houses the flight computers and much of the avionics needed to control the rocket’s flight.
NASA has provided initial funding and authorization to Boeing to begin work toward the production of the third core stage and to order targeted long-lead materials and cost-efficient bulk purchases to support future builds of core stages. This action allows Boeing to manufacture the third core stage in time for the 2024 mission, Artemis III, while NASA and Boeing work on negotiations to finalize the details of the full contract within the next year. The full contract is expected to support up to 10 core stages and up to eight Exploration Upper Stages (EUS).
“It is urgent that we meet the President’s goal to land astronauts on the Moon by 2024, and SLS is the only rocket that can help us meet that challenge,” said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine. “These initial steps allow NASA to start building the core stage that will launch the next astronauts to set foot on the lunar surface and build the powerful exploration upper stage that will expand the possibilities for Artemis missions by sending hardware and cargo along with humans or even heavier cargo needed to explore the Moon or Mars.”
Boeing’s current contract includes the SLS core stages for the Artemis I and Artemis II missions and the first EUS, as well as structural test articles and the core stage pathfinder. The new contract is expected to realize substantial savings compared to the production costs of core stages built during the design, development, test and evaluation phase by applying lessons learned during first-time builds and gaining efficiencies through bulk purchases.
“NASA is committed to establishing a sustainable presence at the Moon, and this action enables NASA to continue Space Launch System core stage production in support of that effort to help bring back new knowledge and prepare for sending astronauts to Mars,” said John Honeycutt, SLS Program Manager at Marshall. “SLS is the only rocket powerful enough to send Orion, astronauts and supplies to the Moon on a single mission, and no other rocket in production today can send as much cargo to deep space as the Space Launch System rocket.
For the first three Artemis missions, the SLS rocket uses an interim cryogenic propulsion stage to send the Orion spacecraft to the Moon. The SLS rocket is designed to meet a variety of mission needs by evolving to carry greater mass and volume with a more powerful EUS. The EUS is an important part of Artemis infrastructure needed to send astronauts and large cargo together, or larger cargo-only shipments, to the Moon, Mars and deep space. NASA aims to use the first EUS on the Artemis IV mission, and additional core stages and upper stages will support either crewed Artemis missions, science missions or cargo missions.
“The exploration upper stage will truly open up the universe by providing even more lift capability to deep space,” said Julie Bassler, the SLS Stages manager at Marshall. “The exploration upper stage will provide the power to send more than 45 metric tons, or 99 thousand pounds, to lunar orbit.”
The Space Launch System rocket, Orion spacecraft, Gateway and Human Landing System are part of NASA’s backbone for deep space exploration. Work is well underway on both the Artemis I and II rockets, with core stage assembly nearly complete at Michoud. Soon, the stage will be shipped to NASA’s Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, where it will undergo Green Run testing, an integrated test of the entire new stage that culminates with the firing of all four RS-25 engines. Upon completion of the test, NASA’s Pegasus barge will take the core stage to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida where it will be integrated with other parts of the rocket and Orion for Artemis I. Boeing also has completed manufacturing most of the main core stage structures for Artemis II.
The Artemis program is the next step in human space exploration. It’s part of NASA’s broader Moon to Mars exploration approach, in which we will quickly and sustainably explore the Moon and use what we learn there to enable humanity’s next giant leap, sending astronauts to Mars.

Psychological research explains why most of us are susceptible to superstition.

In their quest to understand human behavior and belief, psychologists have studied magical thinking and superstitious behavior for over a century. They note that some superstitious behaviors are intended to avoid or counteract “bad luck.” For example, most Americans wouldn’t get married on Friday the 13th. This common American “bad luck” superstition is what psychologist Gustav Jahoda (1969) called a “socially shared superstition” learned from our culture.
One common cultural superstition is the belief that it’s bad luck to “tempt fate” by commenting on a run of good performance or health or being overconfident. Knocking on wood, throwing salt, or spitting presumably counteract the jinx. More than half of Americans admit to knocking on wood when they feel that they’ve tempted fate. In an experimental study, Keinan (2002) found that high stress increased such behavior, especially for people who were high in the need for control. Risen and Gilovich (2018) found that tempting fate beliefs were positively correlated with magical thinking, an external locus of control (beliefs that luck, fate, and external forces determine success and failure), and a tendency toward intuitive rather than rational thinking.
Many people have personal superstitious rituals and behaviors intended to bring “good luck.” Pre-performance rituals, lucky numbers, good luck charms, and wearing the same clothing item before a performance or sports event are typical examples of good luck superstitious behaviors. Schippers and Van Lange (2006) found that four out of five professional athletes surveyed reported engaging in at least one pre-game ritual intended to boost performance. Psychological research finds that superstitious behavior is most likely when people feel uncertain, stressed, and lacking in control. As superstition researcher Keinan (2002) once said, stress undermines our sense of control and superstitious behavior is a way to reestablish it.
I once had a student who used the tiniest stub of a pencil to take his exam. He declined my offer of a new pencil to replace his two-inch nub. “It’s my lucky pencil,” he explained. “I’ve used it every time I’ve taken an exam and I’ve always gotten an A.” I was tempted to point out the scientific impossibility of a magical pencil and to explain the nature of illusory correlations (how our brain may jump to the conclusion that two things occurring together closely in time are causally connected when they’re not). But he was taking his exam, and besides, I knew that his pencil could indeed be lucky for him. After all, research finds that luck-enhancing superstitions sometimes benefit performance by reducing anxiety and increasing perceptions of control. In other words, superstitions can create self-fulfilling prophecies. For instance, Damisch, Stoberock, and Mussweiler (2010) found that activating good luck superstitions via common sayings, actions, or good luck charms increased confidence and thereby improved performance.
A few weeks ago it was stormy in my neck of the woods and it made sense for me to open my umbrella before stepping out into the rain. But thoughts of bad luck popped into my head and led me to hesitate before proceeding. Indeed, psychological research suggests that superstition is not simply a hobgoblin of unscientific minds and anxious personalities; it is a cognitive default that we may or may not choose to override. Risen (2016) notes that most people acquiesce to irrational beliefs related to the control of good or bad luck even when reflection tells them that not only are their beliefs scientifically wrong, but also scientifically impossible. She suggests that this is because intuitive beliefs are especially powerful, and, that because people often “hedge their bets,” many give in to superstitions just in case.
