Computer science

Computer science or computing science (abbreviated CS) is the study of the theoretical foundations of information and computation and of practical techniques for their implementation and application in computer systems. Computer scientists invent algorithmic processes that create, describe, and transform information and formulate suitable abstractions to model complex systems.

Computer science has many sub-fields; some, such as computational complexity theory, study the properties of computational problems, while others, such as computer graphics, emphasize the computation of specific results. Still others focus on the challenges in implementing computations. For example, programming language theory studies approaches to describe computations, while computer programming applies specific programming languages to solve specific computational problems, and human-computer interaction focuses on the challenges in making computers and computations useful, usable, and universally accessible to humans.

Doctor of Philosophy

Doctor of Philosophy, abbreviated as PhD, Ph.D., DPhil or D.Phil. (for the Latin philosophiae doctor or doctor philosophiae), in English-speaking countries, is a postgraduate academic degree awarded by universities. The academic level of degrees known as doctorates of philosophy varies considerably according to the country, institution and time period, from entry-level research degrees to higher doctorates.

The term "philosophy" does not refer solely to the modern field of philosophy, but is used in a broader sense in accordance with its original Greek meaning, which is "love of wisdom". In most of Europe, all fields other than theology, law and medicine were traditionally known as philosophy.

The doctorate of philosophy as it exists today originated as a doctorate in the liberal arts at the Humboldt University, and was eventually adopted by American universities, becoming common in large parts of the world in the 20th century.

In my memory of deploying to the Mediterranean Sea on the USS Wainwright CG 28 in late 1989, as I have written before several times, one of my hobbies when not on watch was the write computer programs on my personal computer and which was a personal computer manufactured by the Commodore corporation. One of my endeavors was creating an analog clock display and I was thinking last night again about that and I decided that what I was actually doing was thinking about my theories on developing a device that would literally transport a person back and forth through time, just as you see in the movies. So what I thought about last night was that while my memory of writing software to create my own figurative time machine on my personal computer then that memory could be my so-called 'symbolic memory' in my mind but that does not necessarily mean it is one of my so-called 'artificial memories.' Rather, as I was thinking last night, that memory is sort of a selective memory that is the only part of the overall story my subconscious mind will let me think about now in conventional terms in my conscious awareness. What I was thinking last night was that I really was writing that software for that analog clock on my personal computer but I had a different reason for that activity. The reason was that other people worked in that ship's compartment and I was doing that to see who talked to who about what. And I did that because I had become aware that other people somehow knew that I was going to be the inventor of time travel.

So I did invent time travel but maybe I did actually do that in the past relative to this present day. What I started feeling certain about last night is that I did invent something incredible in the early 1990's and what I was thinking last night is that as I was trying to create a time traveler machine I succeeded in creating a matter transportation device but that does not have time traveler capability in the classic sense. Oh, sure, it saves time by making long trips shorter but it does not transport anything back or forward through time. My first major successful test before 1994 was that I transported myself to the planet Neptune and back using that device I created. I knew what kind of survival gear I would need to arrive there because I had first sent a probe there to review the environment.

I exist here now as another successful, but miserable, test of that device. I could activate that machine at any time and leave here but that is not part of the plan. To leave now would be, simply, selfish on my part. I write these details knowing full well that the cowards at Microsoft and Microsoft's Bill Gates are going to continue creating as much violence around me as they can possibly get away with and their terroristic reasons are to force me to activate my matter transporter and leave whatever hell on Earth they create around me and all the people around me at the time.

Needless to say, I don't see any of those cowards standing around a few inches near me waiting to jump into the portal when I open it for matter transportation.

Watching this now on Comcast On Demand and again for the first time in a very long the first thought that came to mind in the first few minutes was: what if my degree in the early 1990s really was from Princeton University. Thomas Reagan, a 1969 graduate of Princeton University, unpublished by anyone but me, as well as also a major movie studio executive and financial owner, made the arrangements for my studies there. My work in Columbia was as a professor in the second half of the 1990s.

NASA astronauts make history during first all-female spacewalk

NASA plans to put the first woman on the moon by 2024.

ct. 18, 2019, 4:45 AM PDT / Updated Oct. 18, 2019, 1:19 PM PDT

By Elisha Fieldstadt

Two astronauts made history Friday morning as the first women to participate in an all-female spacewalk.

Christina Koch and Jessica Meir ventured outside the International Space Station at about 7:50 a.m. to make an urgent repair to its power system. They concluded the spacewalk 7 hours and 17 minutes later, just before 3 p.m.

"Another milestone in human space exploration is officially complete!' said a tweet from NASA.

They were successful in their mission to replace a faulty battery charge/discharge unit (BCDU) that failed to activate earlier this month when new lithium-ion batteries were installed on the station's exterior, according to NASA. The faulty BCDU will be sent back to Earth for inspection.

I'm damned if I can find anything wrong with it.

HAL-9000: Yes... it's puzzling. I don 't think l've ever seen anything quite like this before. I would recommend... that we put the unit back in operation and let it fail. It should then be a simple matter to track down the cause. We can certainly afford to be out of communication... for the short time it will take to replace it.

Key NASA Mission: Get Along in Space

Science: Beyond the technical problems, the languages and customs of 16 nations need to be reconciled for the continuing operation in isolation above Earth.

November 02, 2000 USHA LEE McFARLING TIMES SCIENCE WRITER

They'll probably get along, the two seasoned cosmonauts and the American commander scheduled to dock with the International Space Station early this morning. After all, project delays have given the crew nearly five years to chip away at the linguistic and cultural obstacles that could derail their extended mission.

But will other U.S./Russian crews do as well? And what of future polyglot crews that contain, for example, Japanese and Brazilian astronauts?

"Making it work is not a technical challenge," said John Logsdon, director of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University. "The real challenges are the international nature of the crews and the ground systems."

At 1:24 a.m., the Russian Soyuz capsule was scheduled to dock with the space station about 220 miles above the Earth. In preparation, Russian ground controllers undocked a trash-filled Russian freight vehicle from the station by remote control and crashed it into the South Pacific near Fiji.

Aboard the capsule, cosmonaut Yuri Gidzenko was to fire Soyuz engines and guide the capsule into a flyaround of the station in preparation for docking. "We're having a pretty good day in orbit," Bill Shepherd, the U.S. commander of the four-month mission to the station, said earlier.

So far, the current mission has gone smoothly. But if Americans learned anything from their sometimes prickly experience with Russia in joint missions on the shuttle and on space station Mir, it was that cooperation with a former Cold War enemy could be difficult.

Melding the goals, finances and egos of the 16 nations that are partners for the building and operating of the space station for the next 15 years could be harder still. There are sure to be new cultural issues in space that even seasoned NASA planners can't predict.

An example? A Saudi prince who rode aboard shuttle Discovery in 1985 had no idea how to point toward Mecca from space and was uncertain how often he should pray, with the sun rising and setting every 45 minutes. (After consulting religious authorities, Mission Control decided pointing toward Earth and praying at sunrise and sunset Houston time was fine.)

Tensions could increase for future crews of seven astronauts from various nations. "When you get more people up there, coalitions can form," said Harvey Wichman, director of the Claremont McKenna College Aerospace Psychology Laboratory. "That can be deadly."

In an early sign that compromise might be the order of the day on the space station, English will not be the official station language as planned--at least not right away.

At two prelaunch news conferences held in Russia, English words were rare--even from Shepherd, who is fluent in Russian. The "Expedition One" crew, he said, will speak "Runglish," a blend of Russian and English.

"We certainly want to migrate toward an all-English operation," Jeff Hanley, lead flight director for the mission, said from Houston. But until Russian flight controllers become proficient in English, he said, "that's not practical."

For this crew, language probably will not be a barrier. "We don't even need to talk to each other sometimes," Gidzenko said. "We take a look at each other and we have got it. We talk with our eyes."

Sergei Krikalev, a telegenic cosmonaut who lived in Houston and flew aboard the first U.S.-Russian joint shuttle mission in 1994, called his trip to the station a "logical extension" of cooperation between the two nations. "I think we can fly even further together," he added.

While some Russian cosmonauts had grumbled at the prospect of being placed under an American commander, this team said the nationality of the commander was irrelevant. "I think a good leader sometimes has to be a good follower," said Shepherd, a former Navy SEAL.

Shepherd made good on his promise, following the Russian custom in preflight rituals established by pioneer Yuri Gagarin, the first man to enter space in 1961: The trio watched the beloved Russian film "White Sun of the Desert" before the flight and, shortly before entering the Soyuz, urinated on the tire of the vehicle ferrying them to the rocket.

In the Mir program, difficulties arose when the two powerful space agencies--each with its own entrenched culture--clashed over how to proceed. In space, it was cosmonauts fuming at an astronaut who wouldn't pitch in to repair the cooling system. On the ground, it was Houston battling with Moscow for control of astronauts' schedules.

NASA, according to space analysts, is much more control oriented than its Russian counterpart. The agency likes to run missions from the ground and schedule nearly every minute of an astronaut's time. Russians give more control to commanders and allow them to make more decisions on the fly.

"The real test will come when something goes wrong and there's a debate over what to do," Logsdon said.

Key NASA Mission: Get Along in Space

Science: Beyond the technical problems, the languages and customs of 16 nations need to be reconciled for the continuing operation in isolation above Earth.

November 02, 2000 USHA LEE McFARLING TIMES SCIENCE WRITER

Hanley, the flight director, said ground crews had spent much time practicing conflict resolution and communication skills. "That doesn't mean we're not going to have rough spots," he said. "We'll work through those as we have in the past."

Russian cosmonauts are also much more emotional than American fliers, who like to set their emotions aside, said Ken Bowersox, a U.S. astronaut who is the expedition's backup commander. "Nobody can prepare you for how it feels," he said.

Tensions persist because many Russians feel their major contribution to living in space--the successful long-term tenure of Mir--has been overlooked by NASA officials eager to justify the $60-billion cost of the station by emphasizing its historical importance.

"We're calling this the first permanent human presence in space," said Logsdon, the space policy expert. NASA is ignoring Mir, he added, "because it wasn't us."

The sensitivity of many Russians is heightened because their beloved Mir is expected to crash back to Earth next year. "It is clear that participation in international programs is a good thing, but we will always remain guests there," said Vladimir Polvektov, head of security at one of the launch pads at Russia's base at Baikonur, Kazakhstan.

But Russian President Vladimir Putin was more positive about the station, calling it "a clear and convincing example of mutually beneficial cooperation."

On the American side, tensions have mounted over delays to the station caused by Russia's financial collapse. Analysts said NASA should expect such delays when dealing with nations under pressing economic strains.

"All of our management systems are based on assumptions of abundance," said Howard E. McCurdy, an expert on NASA at the American University School of Public Affairs. "Most of the world does not live under those assumptions."

In the cramped quarters of the space station, small cultural differences can become huge sticking points. Americans have learned to tolerate Russian rations, such as jellied fish, which can be "hard to take at first," Bowersox said. Will the French and their finicky palates stomach such foods? And will European nations follow NASA's strict prohibition against alcohol? On Mir, vodka was a standard commodity.

Divisions may not necessarily occur along national lines. As the mid-70s Skylab mission showed with a public fight over scheduling, space crews bond closely and sometimes team up against controllers on the ground. On the station, that means astronauts from different countries might take the same side in a dispute against ground-based managers from their own countries. Jack Stuster, an anthropologist at Anacapa Sciences in Santa Barbara and an expert on human performance in extreme environments, said that living aboard a station may spawn a "space-faring culture" yet to be imagined. Others go further, wittily suggesting that residence in space might create a new species, Homo spaciens, adapted to life without gravity.

Many space station watchers are excited about implications of the project that extend beyond space exploration.

"One of the great opportunities is to teach people of the world to work together on great high-tech projects . . . maybe to offset global warming or deflect asteroids," McCurdy said.

Bowersox, speaking of newly formed friendships with Russian cosmonauts, added: "Would you have believed this was even possible 20 years ago?"

JOHN F. KENNEDY

35th President of the United States: 1961 - 1963

Reply to Chairman Khrushchev's Message on the flight of Colonel Glenn.

February 21, 1962

Dear Mr. Chairman:

I thank you warmly for your message of congratulations on Colonel Glenn's successful space flight, and I welcome your statement that our countries should cooperate in the exploration of space. I have long held this same belief and indeed put it forward strongly in my first state of the Union message.

We of course believe also in strong support of the work of the United Nations in this field and we are cooperating directly with many other countries individually. But obviously special opportunities and responsibilities fall to our two countries.

I am instructing the appropriate officers of this Government to prepare new and concrete proposals for immediate projects of common action, and I hope that at a very early date our representatives may meet to discuss our ideas and yours in a spirit of practical cooperation

Sincerely,

JOHN F. KENNEDY

Note: Mr. Khrushchev's message, dated February 21 is published in the State Department Bulletin (vol. 46, p. 411). For the proposals of joint action with the Soviet Union in the exploration of outer space, see Item 96.

The cult of the individual

Nikita Khrushchev

guardian.co.uk, Thursday 26 April 2007 01.34 BST

Comrades! In the party central committee's report at the 20th congress and in a number of speeches by delegates to the congress a lot has been said about the cult of the individual. After Stalin's death, the central committee began explaining that it is foreign to the spirit of Marxism-Leninism to elevate one person, to transform him into a superman possessing supernatural characteristics, akin to those of a god. Such a man supposedly knows everything, sees everything, thinks for everyone, can do anything, is infallible in his behaviour.

Such a belief about a man, and specifically about Stalin, was cultivated among us for many years. The objective of this report is not a thorough evaluation of Stalin's life and activity. Concerning Stalin's merits, an entirely sufficient number of books, pamphlets and studies had already been written in his lifetime. Stalin's role in the execution of the socialist revolution, in the civil war, and in the construction of socialism is universally known.

At present, we are concerned with how the cult of Stalin has been gradually growing, the cult which became the source of a whole series of exceedingly serious perversions of party principles, of party democracy, of revolutionary legality. The central committee considers it absolutely necessary to make material pertaining to this matter available to the 20th congress.

The great modesty of the genius of the revolution, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, is known. Lenin always stressed the role of the people as the creator of history. Lenin mercilessly stigmatised every manifestation of the cult of the individual. Lenin never imposed his views by force. He tried to convince. He patiently explained his opinions to others.

Lenin detected in Stalin those negative characteristics which resulted later in grave consequences. Fearing the future fate of the of the Soviet nation, Lenin pointed out that it was necessary to consider transferring Stalin from the position of general secretary because Stalin did not have a proper attitude toward his comrades.

Happy Anniversary, Nikita Khrushchev

By Anne Applebaum

Wednesday, February 22, 2006

It is, I admit, an odd thing to celebrate: A long-winded and not entirely honest speech, made behind closed doors, addressed to the stony-faced leaders of a country that no longer exists. Nevertheless, I'm reluctant to let the 50th anniversary of Nikita Khrushchev's famous "secret speech" -- his denunciation of Stalin and Stalinism, delivered to the 20th Congress of the Soviet Communist Party on Feb. 25, 1956 -- pass without notice. We are, after all, at another important historical moment. Condoleezza Rice, the U.S. secretary of state, has just announced that we will spend $75 million promoting democracy and fighting a totalitarian regime in Iran. We have thousands of soldiers in Iraq, trying to pick up the pieces after the collapse of another totalitarian regime there. Since Khrushchev's secret speech was the first step in what turned out to be a very long struggle to end totalitarianism in the Soviet Union, it's worth remembering now what the circumstances that surrounded it actually were.

In essence, Khrushchev's speech (which didn't remain secret very long; Polish communists leaked it to the Israelis, who leaked it to the West) was a piece of theater, a four-hour harangue during which the new Soviet leader denounced the "cult of personality" that had surrounded Stalin, condemned torture and acknowledged that "mass arrests and deportation of thousands and thousands of people" had "created insecurity, fear and even desperation" in his country. But although it was an international sensation -- no Soviet leader had spoken so frankly before -- the speech didn't exactly tell the whole truth. Khrushchev accused Stalin of many crimes, but deftly left out the ones in which he himself had been implicated. As William Taubman, author of "Khrushchev: The Man and His Era," has documented, the Soviet leader had in fact collaborated enthusiastically with Stalinist terror, participating in the very mass arrests he condemned. Khrushchev's speech was intended as much to consolidate his own power and intimidate his party opponents -- all of whom had also collaborated enthusiastically -- as it was to liberate his countrymen.

Modern History Sourcebook:

Nikita S. Khrushchev:

The Secret Speech - On the Cult of Personality, 1956

Secret Speech Delivered by First Party Secretary at the Twentieth Party Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, February 25, 1956

Comrades, in the report of the Central Committee of the party at the 20th Congress, in a number of speeches by delegates to the Congress, as also formerly during the plenary CC/CPSU sessions, quite a lot has been said about the cult of the individual and about its harmful consequences. . . .

Allow me first of all to remind you bow severely the classics of Marxism-Leninism denounced every manifestation of the cult of the individual. In a letter to the German political worker, Wilhelm Bloss, Marx stated: "From my antipathy to any cult of the individual, I never made public during the existence of the International the numerous addresses from various countries which recognized my merits and which annoyed me. I did not even reply to them, except sometimes to rebuke their authors. Engels and I first joined the secret society of Communists on the condition that everything making for superstitious worship of authority would be deleted from its statute. . . .

The great modesty of the genius of the revolution, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, is known. Lenin had always stressed the role of the people as the creator of history, the directing and organizational role of the party as a living and creative organism, and also the role of the central committee.

Marxism does not negate the role of the leaders of the workers' class in directing the revolutionary liberation movement.

While ascribing great importance to the role of the leaders and organizers of the masses, Lenin at the same time mercilessly stigmatized every manifestation of the cult of the individual, inexorably combated the foreign-to-Marxism views about a "hero" and a "crowd" and countered all efforts to oppose a "hero" to the masses and to the people.

Lenin taught that the party's strength depends on its indissoluble unity with the masses, on the fact that behind the party follow the people - workers, peasants and intelligentsia. "Only lie will win and retain the power," said Lenin, "who believes in the people, who submerges himself in the fountain of the living creativeness of the people.". . .

U.S. Centennial of Flight Commisson

Airmail Pilots: Firsts and Legends

Early airmail flight was dangerous and its pilots needed to have a considerable amount of the daredevil in them to brave the risks. But whether these pioneers exhibited extraordinary (or perhaps foolhardy) bravery or were merely doing their job, the careers of the members of this "suicide club" were like those of few others. As one early pilot, Dean Smith, said: "It was so alive and rich a life that any other conceivable choice seemed dull, prosaic, and humdrum."

Pilots began carrying the mail within a decade after the Wright brothers' first flight. In the summer of 1910, Claude Graham-White of England, Great Britain, became the first to fly mail and packages in a machine with wings. Later that year in the United States, the Wright brothers hired pilot Phil Parmalee to try the same thing. In November, Parmalee's plane carried a bolt of silk from Dayton to Columbus, Ohio, initiating the package delivery industry.

Fred Wiseman of Petaluma, California, went one step further when he flew (unofficially) a sack of coffee beans, 50 newspapers, and three letters 18 miles to Santa Rosa on February 17, 1911. Although it took him over two days for the 12-minute, 20-second trip, because of a crash and a broken propeller he was probably the first in the nation to carry the mail.

Stargate Atlantis - Rising - television series premiere episode part 1 and 2 - Friday 16 July 2004 (DVD extended version)

Episode Summary

The discovery of an outpost, left behind by the Ancients in the most unlikely of places, leads a new Stargate team to the distant Pegasus galaxy. Once there, they discover a planet of humans being decimated by a terrible alien race know as the Wraith.

(from internet transcript of incomplete dialog)

WRAITH HALL. The guards bring Sumner into a large hall. In the middle of the hall is a long dining table with food on it, though the food doesn't look very appetising. Sitting in a chair at one end is a skeletal, ancient-looking man. He looks like he's been dead for centuries. It's also clear that this is Toran. Sumner looks at him for a while, then walks away, looking around the room. The ceiling appears to be very high but is obscured by mist. Suddenly a female Wraith -- similar in appearance to the male Wraith but with long dark red hair and wearing a long white shift dress -- drops down out of nowhere and lands on the floor behind Sumner. He spins round to face her.

WRAITH Queen: You must feel hunger by now. (She snarls.)

WRAITH Queen: What do you call yourself?

SUMNER: Colonel Marshall Sumner, United States Marine Corps.

WRAITH Queen: So little fear. Is it valour ... or ignorance?

SUMNER: We travelled through the Stargate as peaceful explorers.

WRAITH Queen: You must eat, yet you resist your hunger. Why?

SUMNER: Why have you taken my people prisoner?

WRAITH Queen: You trespassed upon our feeding ground.

SUMNER: Feeding ground?

WRAITH Queen: All living things must eat. In this I'm sure we are similar. You feel hunger even now -- I can sense it. Yet you resist. Why?

SUMNER: Why do you care?

WRAITH Queen: Hunger is distasteful.

SUMNER (looking at Toran's corpse): Looks to me like the food didn't agree with him.

WRAITH Queen: There we are quite dissimilar, Colonel Sumner. (She leans over Toran, running a long fingernail down his head.) We don't require our food to agree with us.

(Nearby, Sheppard -- with the help of his scanner -- is searching for the colonel.)

WRAITH Queen: What do you call your world?

(Sumner refuses to answer. The Wraith repeats the question but this time her mouth doesn't move and the sound of her voice reverberates. She's clearly exerting telepathic force on Sumner, who struggles under the pressure.)

WRAITH Queen (silently): What do you call your world?

SUMNER (struggling not to speak, but unable to resist): Earth.

WRAITH Queen: It is not among our stars.

SUMNER (still struggling): No.

WRAITH Queen: Tell me of Earth. How many more are there of your kind? (Again, Sumner tries not to let her into his mind.) Thousands? Millions? (delighted) More. Our feeding ground has not been so rich in ten thousand years.

SEATTLE — Sometimes a billionaire just needs a burger.

Bill Gates was reportedly spotted waiting in line at Dick’s Drive-In over the weekend.

A photo posted on Facebook Tuesday reportedly shows Gates at the Wallingford location at 111 NE 45th St., according to GeekWire. Mike Galos, who shared the photo, said on Facebook that it was initially posted on a closed message board for former Microsoft employees.

When you're worth about $100,000,000,000, run the largest charity in the history of the world and stand in line for a burger, fries and Coke at Dick's like the rest of us...

THIS is how real rich people behave unlike the gold toilet seat wannabe poser in the White House.

Bill Gates, the billionaire burger lover who has been known to grab a bite at Burgermaster in Bellevue, changed course over the weekend and was captured standing in line at a Dick’s Drive-In in Seattle.

With his hands in his pockets and a thousand-yard “I need a Deluxe and fries” stare on his face, Gates was photographed standing in the bright neon glow of the famed fast-food franchise.

The image was shared on Facebook by Mike Galos, a onetime Microsoftie who wrote in the comments on the image that he saw it on a Microsoft alumni board. Galos said Gates was at the Dick’s location on Northeast 45th Street in Seattle’s Wallingford neighborhood on Sunday night.

The coin dispending machine at the checkout line at that nearby Safeway supermarket shortchanged me a nickel. I got the two quarters from it but no nickel as my receipt indicates I should have receieved. I didn't look at the dollar bills the checkout attendant handed me.

About 5 or ten minutes earlier I had walked in there and filled out a form for their discount card which I then used at the checkout.

I don't think I have even been into that Safeway more than 1 other time this year.

That one guy with the leg brace poking out from under his jeans as he leaned against the bicycle must have, I am thinking now, had his head bowed downed so that a person on my other side would capture the words printed on his cap in the same frame when I walked by him. Just after I walked by him, he looked up, or so it seemed from my peripheral vision.

That was in front of that hamburger place just before the Safeway I was walking to. I can't remember the name. Dick's?

I am also confused about thoughts that I may have been a helicopter pilot. What's next? A space shuttle pilot? Seems like a lot for someone that is only 40. And, while I am not sure when this divergence happened, I am reasonably certain it was before I turned 33. So I must have been a pretty busy guy. Especially because I have thoughts that I was some kind of mathmetician too. I have these thoughts too that I was captured by enemy forces at some point and tortured while in captivity.

Chapter 1

Stuart Redman, who was perhaps the quietest man in Arnette, was sitting in one of the cracked plastic Woolco chairs, a can of Pabst in his hand, looking out the big service station window at Number 93. Stu knew about poor. He had grown up that way right here in town, the son of a dentist who had died when Stu was seven, leaving his wife and two other children besides Stu.

His mother had gotten work at the Red Ball Truck Stop just outside of Arnette—Stu could have seen it from where he sat right now if it hadn’t burned down in 1979. It had been enough to keep the four of them eating, but that was all. At the age of nine, Stu had gone to work, first for Rog Tucker, who owned the Red Ball, helping to unload trucks after school for thirty-five cents an hour, and then at the stockyards in the neighboring town of Braintree, lying about his age to get twenty backbreaking hours of labor a week at the minimum wage.

Now, listening to Hap and Vic Palfrey argue on about money and the mysterious way it had of drying up, he thought about the way his hands had bled at first from pulling the endless handtrucks of hides and guts. He had tried to keep that from his mother, but she had seen, less than a week after he started. She wept over them a little, and she hadn’t been a woman who wept easily. But she hadn’t asked him to quit the job. She knew what the situation was. She was a realist.

Some of the silence in him came from the fact that he had never had friends, or the time for them. There was school, and there was work. His youngest brother, Dev, had died of pneumonia the year he began at the yards, and Stu had never quite gotten over that. Guilt, he supposed. He had loved Dev the best… but his passing had also meant there was one less mouth to feed.

In high school he had found football, and that was something his mother had encouraged even though it cut into his work hours. “You play,” she said. “If you got a ticket out of here, it’s football, Stuart. You play. Remember Eddie Warfield.” Eddie Warfield was a local hero. He had come from a family even poorer than Stu’s own, had covered himself with glory as quarterback of the regional high school team, had gone on to Texas A&M with an athletic scholarship, and had played for ten years with the Green Bay Packers, mostly as a second-string quarterback but on several memorable occasions as the starter. Eddie now owned a string of fast-food restaurants across the West and Southwest, and in Arnette he was an enduring figure of myth. In Arnette, when you said “success,” you meant Eddie Warfield.

Stu was no quarterback, and he was no Eddie Warfield. But it did seem to him as he began his junior year in high school that there was at least a fighting chance for him to get a small athletic scholarship… and then there were work-study programs, and the school’s guidance counselor had told him about the NDEA loan program.

Then his mother had gotten sick, had become unable to work. It was cancer. Two months before he graduated from high school, she had died, leaving Stu with his brother Bryce to support. Stu had turned down the athletic scholarship and had gone to work in the calculator factory. And finally it was Bryce, three years’ Stu’s junior, who had made it out. He was now in Minnesota, a systems analyst for IBM. He didn’t write often, and the last time he had seen Bryce was at the funeral, after Stu’s wife had died—died of exactly the same sort of cancer that had killed his mother. He thought that Bryce might have his own guilt to carry… and that Bryce might be a little ashamed of the fact that his brother had turned into just another good old boy in a dying Texas town, spending his days doing time in the calculator plant, and his nights either down at Hap’s or over at the Indian Head drinking Lone Star beer.

REILLY
Fall back to the pyramid!

Where the hell'd that come from?

Kawalski? Brown? Do you read?

KAWALSKI
Hey Jackson, I don't think we should eat any food here.

[Daniel continues eating.]

Doctor Daniel Jackson
I dunno. They might consider that an insult.

[A new platter is set down in front of Daniel and Brown of some sort of armour-skinned large alien creature (like an armadillo). Daniel's jaw drops as Kawalski laughs. Kasuf gestures that Daniel has the honor of taking the first bite. Daniel continues to stare in alarm at the beast.]

KAWALSKI
Well, we don't want to offend them now, do we, Daniel?

[Daniel continues to chew on his flatbread as he cautiously reaches forward and scoops some of the meat out from where the center of the animal's hide has been cut open. He sniffs it before taking a bite, tasting it carefully. Kasuf watches anxiously.]

Tastes like chicken. Tastes like chicken. It's good.

[He laughs in relief. Kasuf cautiously smiles. Daniel turns to Kasuf.]

Episode Summary

When their shuttle is diverted to a planetoid, Kirk, Spock, and McCoy encounter Earth's Warp Drive pioneer, Zefram Cochrane, who appears to have survived there alone for 150 years.

(from internet transcript of incomplete dialog)

[Outside Cochrane's home]

(Cochrane summons the Companion.)

Captain KIRK: Companion. (It leaves Cochrane) We wish to talk to you.

COMPANION: How can we communicate? My thoughts, you are hearing them. This is interesting.

KIRK: Feminine. No doubt about it.

SPOCK: Yes. The matter of gender could change the entire situation.

Captain KIRK: I'm way ahead of you.

SPOCK: Then it is not a zookeeper.

KIRK: No. A lover. Companion. It is wrong to keep us here against our will.

Captain KIRK: Companion, try to understand. It is the nature of our species to be free, just as it is your nature to stay here. We will cease to exist in captivity.

Captain KIRK: Companion, what you offer us is not continuation. It is non-existence. We will cease to exist. Even the man will cease to exist.

COMPANION : Your impulses are illogical. This communication is useless.

Chapter 61

The dark man had set his guardposts all along the eastern border of Oregon. The largest was at Ontario, where I-80 crosses over from Idaho; there were six men there, quartered in the trailer of a large Peterbilt truck. They had been there for more than a week, playing poker the whole time with twenties and fifties as useless as Monopoly money. One man was almost sixty thousand dollars ahead and another—a man whose working wage in the pre-plague world had been about ten thousand dollars a year—was over forty grand in the bucket.

It had rained almost the whole week, and tempers in the trailer were getting short. They had come out of Portland, and they wanted to get back there. There were women in Portland. Hung from a spike was a powerful two-way radio, broadcasting nothing but static. They were waiting for the radio to broadcast two simple words: Come home. That would mean that the man they were looking for had been captured somewhere else.

The man they were looking for was approximately seventy years old, heavyset, balding. He wore glasses and he was driving a white-over-blue four-wheel drive, either a jeep or an International-Harvester. He was to be killed when he was finally spotted.

They were edgy and bored—the novelty of high-stakes poker for real money had worn off two days ago, even for the dullest of them—but not bored enough to just take off for Portland on their own. They had received their orders from the Walkin Dude himself, and even after rain-induced cabin fever had set in, their terror of him remained. If they screwed the job up and he found out, God help them all.

So they sat and played cards and watched by turns at the sight-slit which had been carved through the side of the trailer’s steel wall. I-80 was deserted in the dull, constant rain. But if the Scout happened along, it would be seen… and stopped.

“He’s a spy from the other side,” the Walkin Dude had told them, that horrible grin wreathing his chops. Why it was so horrible none of them could have said, but when it turned your way you felt as if your blood had turned to hot tomato soup in your veins. “He’s a spy and we could welcome him in with open arms, show him everything, and send him back with no harm done. But I want him. I want them both. And we’re going to send their heads back over the mountains before the snow flies. Let them chew on that all winter.” And he bellowed hot laughter at the people he had gathered together in one of the conference rooms at the Portland Civic Center. They smiled back, but their smiles were cold and uneasy. Aloud they might congratulate each other on having been singled out for such a responsibility, but inside, they wished that those happy, awful, weasel-like eyes had fixed on anyone but them.

There was another large guardpost far south of Ontario, at Sheaville. Here there were four men in a small house just off I-95, which meanders down toward the Alvord Desert, with its weird rock formations and its dark, sullen streams of water.

The other posts were manned by pairs of men, and there were an even dozen of them, ranging from the tiny town of Flora, just off Route 3 and less than sixty miles from the Washington border, all the way down to McDermitt, on the Oregon-Nevada border.

An old man in a blue-and-white four-wheel drive. The instructions to all the sentinels were the same: Kill him, but don’t hit him in the head. There was to be no blood or bruise above the Adam’s apple.

“I don’t want to send back damaged goods,” Randy Flagg told them, and clacked and roared his horrible laughter.

The northern border between Oregon and Idaho is marked by the Snake River. If you were to follow the Snake north from Ontario, where the six men sat in their Peterbilt playing spit-in-the-ocean for worthless money, you would eventually come to within spitting distance of Copperfield. The Snake takes a kink here that geologists call an oxbow, and near Copperfield the Snake was dammed by the Oxbow Dam. And on that seventh day of September, as Stu Redman and his party trudged up Colorado Highway 6 over a thousand miles to the east and south, Bobby Terry was sitting inside the Copperfield Five-and-Dime, a stack of comic books by his side, wondering what sort of shape the Oxbow Dam was in, and if the sluice gates had been left open or shut. Outside, Oregon Highway 86 ran past the dime store.

He and his partner, Dave Roberts (now asleep in the apartment overhead), had discussed the dam at great length. It had been raining for a week. The Snake was high. Suppose that old Oxbow Dam decided to let go? Bad news. A rushing wall of water would sweep down on Copperfield and ole Bobby Terry and ole Dave Roberts might be washed all the way down to the Pacific Ocean. They had discussed going over to the dam to look for cracks, but finally just hadn’t dared. Flagg’s orders had been specific: Stay under cover.

Dave had pointed out that Flagg might be anywhere. He was a great traveler, and stories had already sprung up about the way he could suddenly appear in a small, out-of-the-way burg where there were only a dozen people repairing power lines or collecting weapons from some army depot.

Harpers Ferry Armory

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Harpers Ferry Armory, more formally known as the United States Armory and Arsenal at Harpers Ferry, was the second federal armory commissioned by the United States government.

John Brown's Raid

Main article: John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry

In 1859, the armory became the site of the famous seizure by abolitionist John Brown, which, while unsuccessful in inciting a slave revolt, helped precipitate the American Civil War and the eventual emancipation of slaves in the United States.

John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry (also known as John Brown's raid or The raid on Harpers Ferry) was an 1859 effort by abolitionist John Brown to initiate an armed slave revolt in Southern states by taking over a United States arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. It has been called the dress rehearsal for the Civil War.

Brown's party of 22 was defeated by a company of U.S. Marines

Brown's preparation

John Brown rented the Kennedy Farmhouse, with a small cabin nearby, 4 miles (6.4 km) north of Harpers Ferry near the community of Dargan in Washington County, Maryland,[6] and took up residence under the name Isaac Smith. Brown came with a small group of men minimally trained for military action.

Brown did not plan to have a sudden raid and escape to the mountains. Rather, he intended to use those rifles and pikes he captured at the arsenal, in addition to those he brought along, to arm rebellious slaves with the aim of striking terror in the slaveholders in Virginia. He believed that on the first night of action, 200-500 black slaves would join his line. He ridiculed the militia and regular army that might oppose him. He planned to send agents to nearby plantations, rallying the slaves. He planned to hold Harpers Ferry for a short time, expecting that as many volunteers, white and black, would join him as would form against him. He would move rapidly southward, sending out armed bands along the way. They would free more slaves, obtain food, horses and hostages, and destroy slaveholders' morale. Brown planned to follow the Appalachian Mountains south into Tennessee and even Alabama, the heart of the South, making forays into the plains on either side.

Chapter 21

Stu Redman was frightened.

He looked out the barred window of his new room in Stovington, Vermont, and what he saw was a small town far below, miniature gas station signs, some sort of mill, a main street, a river, the turnpike, and beyond the turnpike the granite backbone of far western New England—the Green Mountains.

He was frightened because this was more like a jail cell than a hospital room. He was frightened because Denninger was gone. He hadn’t seen Denninger since the whole crazy three-ring circus moved from Atlanta to here. Deitz was gone, too. Stu thought that maybe Denninger and Deitz were sick, perhaps dead already.

Somebody had slipped. Either that, or the disease that Charles D. Campion had brought to Arnette was a lot more communicable than anyone had guessed. Either way, the integrity of the Atlanta Plague Center had been breached, and Stu thought that everyone who had been there was now getting a chance to do a little firsthand research on the virus they called A-Prime or the superflu.

They still did tests on him here, but they seemed desultory. The schedule had become slipshod. Results were scrawled down and he had a suspicion that someone looked at them cursorily, shook his head, and dumped them in the nearest shredder.

That wasn’t the worst, though. The worst was the guns. The nurses who came in to take blood or spit or urine were now always accompanied by a soldier in a white-suit, and the soldier had a gun in a plastic Baggie. The Baggie was fastened over the wrist of the soldier’s right gauntlet. The gun was an army-issue .45, and Stu had no doubt that, if he tried any of the games he had tried with Deitz, the .45 would tear the end of the Baggie into smoking, burning shreds and Stu Redman would become a Golden Oldie.

Bill Gates may be one of the richest men in the world, but he'll have to wait in line for a burger just like the rest of us.

The burger-loving billionaire was spotted waiting in a line at Dick's Drive-In in Seattle over the weekend, to the delight of fellow customers.

The American business magnate with a fortune of $95.5 billion was seen wearing a red sweater, gray pants and black sneakers as he waited with his hands in his pockets for his burger order on Sunday.

The meal would have cost the billionaire just $7.68 thanks to the drive-in's cheap prices where a deluxe burger costs $3.40, fries $1.90, and a large Coke $2.38.

The casual photo of the billionaire was posted on Facebook on Tuesday by a former Microsoft employee Mike Galos.

CHAPTER 37

DYING FLAME

"Okay, stay close and stay alert," Chavez told the two sergeants.

"Roge-o," Homer Johnston said on his way out. He was thirsty and planned to get himself something to drink, and on the way out he placed his hands over his ears, popping them open to rid himself of the pump noise.

The sound was annoying, Chavez realized in the first few minutes. Not overly loud, but constant, a powerful deep whirring, like a well-insulated automobile engine. It hovered at the edge of your consciousness and didn't go away, and on further reflection made him think of a beehive. Maybe that was the annoying part of it.

"Why are we leaving the lights on?" Noonan asked.

"Good question." Chavez walked over and flipped the switch. The room went almost totally dark, with just a crack of light coming in from under the steel fire door Chavez felt his way to the opposite wall, managed to get there without bumping his head, and leaned against the concrete wall, allowing his eyes to adjust to the darkness.

Gearing was dressed in shorts and low-cut hiking boots, with short socks as well. It seemed the form of dress the locals had adopted for dealing with the heat, and it was comfortable enough, as was his backpack and floppy hat. The stadium concourses were crowded with fans coming in early for the closing ceremonies, and he saw that many of them were standing in the fog to relieve themselves from the oppressive heat of the day. The local weather forecasters had explained ad nauseam about how this version of the El Nino phenomenon had affected the global climate and inflicted unseasonably hot weather on their country, for which they all felt the need to apologize. He found it all rather amusing. Apologize for a natural phenomenon? How ridiculous. With that thought he headed to his objective. In doing so, he walked right past Homer Johnston, who was standing, sipping his Coke.

"Any other places the guy might use?" Chavez worried suddenly in the darkness.

"No," Noonan replied. "I checked the panel on the way in. The whole stadium fogging system comes from this one room. If it's going to happen, it will happen here."

"If it's gonna happen," Chavez said back, actually hoping that it would not. If that happened, they'd go back to Lieutenant Colonel Wilkerson and find out where this Gearing guy was staying, and then pay a call on him and have a friendly little chat.

Gearing spotted the blue door and looked around for security people. The Aussie SAS troops were easily spotted, once you knew how they dressed. But though he saw two Sydney policemen walking down the concourse, there were no army personnel. Gearing paused fifty feet or so from the door. The usual mission jitters, he told himself. He was about to do something from which there was no turning back. He asked himself for the thousandth time if he really wanted to do this. There were fellow human beings all around him, people seemingly just like himself with hopes and dreams and aspirations but, no, those things they held in their minds weren't like the things he held in his own, were they? They didn't get it, didn't understand what was important and what was not. They didn't see Nature for what She was, and as a result they lived lives that were aimed only at hurting or even destroying Her, driving cars that injected hydrocarbons into the atmosphere, using chemicals that found their way into the water, pesticides that killed birds or kept them from reproducing, aiming spray cans at their hair whose propellants destroyed the ozone layer. They were killing Nature with nearly every act they took. They didn't care. They didn't even try to understand the consequences of what they were doing, and so, no, they didn't have a right to live. It was his job to protect Nature, to remove the blight upon the planet, to restore and save, and that was a job he must do. With that decided, Wil Gearing resumed his walk to the blue door, fished in his pocket for the key and inserted it into the knob.

"Command, this is Johnston, you got company coming in! White guy, khaki shorts, red polo shirt, and backpack," Homer announced loudly into everyone's ear. Beside him, Sergeant Tomlinson started walking in that direction, too.

"Heads up," Chavez said in the darkness. There were two shadows in the crack of light under the door, and then the sound of a key in the lock, and then there was another crack of light, a vertical one as the door opened, and a silhouette, a human shape and just that fast, Chavez knew that it was all real after all. Would the lights reveal an inhuman monster, something from another planet, or.… just a man, he saw, as the lights flipped on. About fifty, with closely cropped salt-and-pepper hair. A man who knew what he was about. He reached for the wrench hanging on the wall mounted pegboard, then shrugged out of his backpack, and loosened the two straps that held the flap in place. It seemed to Chavez that he was watching a movie, something separated from reality, as the man flipped off the motor switch, ending the whirring. Then he closed the valve and lifted the wrench to-

"Hold it right there, pal," Chavez said, emerging from the shadows.

"Who are you?" the man asked in surprise. Then his face told the tale. He was doing something he shouldn't. He knew it, and suddenly someone else did, too.

"I could ask you the same thing, except I know who you are. Your name is Wil Gearing. What are you planning to do, Mr. Gearing?"

"I'm just here to swap out the chlorine canister on the fogging system," Gearing replied, shaken all the more that this Latino seemed to know his name. How had that happened? Was he part of the Project-and if not, then what? It was as if someone had punched him in the stomach, and now his entire body cringed from the blow."Oh? Let's see about that, Mr. Gearing. Tim?" Chavez gestured for Noonan to get the backpack. Sergeant Pierce stayed back, his hand on his pistol and his eyes locked on their visitor.

"Sure looks like a normal one," Noonan said. If this was a counterfeit, it was a beaut. He was tempted to open the screw top, but he had good reason not to. Next to the pump motor, Chavez took the wrench and removed the existing canister.

"Looks about half full to me, pal. Not time to replace it yet, at least not with something called Shiva. Tim, let's be careful with that one."

Legionellosis

Legionellosis is a potentially fatal infectious disease caused by Gram negative, aerobic bacteria belonging to the genus Legionella. Over 90% of legionellosis cases are caused by Legionella pneumophila, a ubiquitous aquatic organism that thrives in temperatures between 25 and 45 °C (77 and 113 °F), with an optimum around 35 °C (95 °F).

The first recognized outbreak occurred on July 27, 1976 at the Bellevue Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where members of the American Legion, a United States military veterans association

Legionnaires' disease remains underreported after 25 years

Published: Monday, July 30, 2001 12:55 p.m. MDT

PHILADELPHIA — Twenty-five years after Legionnaires' disease was first identified, public health officials are still trying to get doctors and hospitals to pay closer attention to the disease.

As many as 90 percent of Legionnaires' cases go unreported, and only one in five U.S. hospitals routinely tests for the pneumonia-like illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"We think it's important for doctors to have a heightened suspicion of the possibility of Legionnaires' disease," especially in the elderly, smokers, transplant recipients and others with weakened immune systems, said Dr. Anne Schuchat, chief of the CDC's respiratory diseases branch.

The illness was discovered in 1976, when 34 people died and 221 became ill at an American Legion convention in Philadelphia. Retired Air Force Capt. Raymond Brennan was the first known victim, succumbing on July 27, 1976. The CDC identified the bacterium responsible for the outbreak in January 1977, calling it Legionella pneumophilia.

Legionnaires' disease is a respiratory infection that generally spreads through inhalation of mist from contaminated water. It can be found in air conditioning cooling towers, hot water tanks, whirlpool spas, humidifiers, faucets, shower heads and moist soil.

John Brown (abolitionist)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Brown (May 9, 1800 – December 2, 1859) was an American abolitionist. Brown advocated the use of armed insurrection to overthrow the institution of slavery in the United States. He first gained national attention when he led small groups of volunteers during the Bleeding Kansas crisis of 1856. He was dissatisfied with the pacifism of the organized abolitionist movement: "These men are all talk. What we need is action—action!" In May 1856, Brown and his supporters killed five supporters of slavery in the Pottawatomie massacre, which responded to the sacking of Lawrence by pro-slavery forces. Brown then commanded anti-slavery forces at the Battle of Black Jack (June 2) and the Battle of Osawatomie (August 30, 1856).

In October 1859, Brown led a raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia (today West Virginia), intending to start a slave liberation movement that would spread south through the mountainous regions of Virginia and North Carolina; there was a draft constitution for the state he hoped to establish.

Now it makes sense. Transvestites. The reason so many weepy-eyed lameoids are boo-hoo'ing about transvestites. As I've said before, they're the modern-day equivalent of Hollywood midgets. As with the exploited Little Person, the transvestites draw attention to tv ad's. Money.

No Doubt

"Just A Girl"

Take this pink ribbon off my eyes
I'm exposed and it's no big surprise
Don't you think I know exactly where I stand
This world is forcing me to hold your hand

'Cause I'm just a girl, a little 'ol me
Well don't let me out of your sight
Oh I'm just a girl, all pretty and petite
So don't let me have any rights

Oh...I've had it up to here!

The moment that I step outside
So many reasons for me to run and hide
I can't do the little things I hold so dear
'Cause it's all those little things that I fear

'Cause I'm just a girl I'd rather not be
'Cause they won't let me drive late at night
Oh I'm just a girl, guess I'm some kind of freak
'Cause they all sit and stare with their eyes

Oh I'm just a girl, take a good look at me
Just your typical prototype

Oh...I've had it up to here!

Oh...am I making myself clear?

I'm just a girl
I'm just a girl in the world...
That's all that you'll let me be!

I'm just a girl, living in captivity
Your rule of thumb makes me worry some
I'm just a girl, what's my destiny?
What I've succumbed to is making me numb

Oh I'm just a girl, my apologies
What I've become is so burdensome
Oh I'm just a girl, lucky me
Twiddle-dum there's no comparison

Oh...I've had it up to!
Oh...I've had it up to!
Oh...I've had it up to here!
