Orig. airdate July 11, 1991

"Blood Feud" is the last episode of the second season of The Simpsons. However, The Simpsons Archive lists "Blood Feud" as not belonging to any season, as it aired after the formal end of the second season and before the beginning of the third season. However, it is considered part of Season 2 as it appeared on that season's DVD

When Mr. Burns falls ill and desperately needs a blood transfusion, Homer discovers Bart has Mr. Burns's rare blood type, and Homer, disappointed he only has A Positive, urges his son to donate, promising that they will be handsomely rewarded. He mistells the story of "Androcles and the Lion" (instead, referring to it as "Hercules and the Lion"), telling Bart the hero was rewarded with riches. However, Mr. Burns knows nothing of this promise, or even of the Simpsons' desire for a reward, and having received the blood, all he does is send the family a card. Enraged, Homer writes an insulting reply, but Marge convinces him at the last minute not to send it. Later the letter goes missing, as Bart has mailed it, still thinking its message is called for.

Homer and Bart's attempts to stop the mail delivery end in failure, and Mr. Burns is furious at the insult and demands that Homer be beaten. Waylon Smithers calls off the beating, however, on the grounds that this action is no way to thank the man who saved Mr. Burns's life. Just as Marge had convinced Homer to refrain from sending the letter, Smithers has a calming influence on Mr. Burns, and the two men decide instead to buy the family a present. The Simpsons receive an antique Xtapolapocetl, an Olmec head (a massive, Tiki-god-like affair) that Bart, the blood donor, likes, and which Homer hates. The head appears many times in subsequent episodes.

Reminds me of "The Last Boy Scout."

Blood Feud

Brian Scearce observes that Mr. Burns a bunch of the insults that Homer mailed him. After the sarcastic part of the letter, Homer writes, ``You stink! You are a senile, buck-toothed old mummy with bony girl arms and you smell like an elephant's butt!'' When Burns is storming around his study, he shouts, ``Senile, eh? Buck-toothed, am I? Bony arms, are they? Liver spots, did I? Chinless, will you?'' No doubt Burns has had similar letters sent to him in the past, and he's confused some of them.

Marge: Homer, you don't do things like that to be rewarded. You do them because a fellow human being needs a helping hand.

Homer: Marge, you're my wife, I love you very much, but [condescendingly] you're living in a world of make-believe! With flowers and bells and leprechauns and magic frogs with funny little hats.

Bart: Yeah, Mom, we got hosed.

Grift of the Magi

Original Airdate on FOX: 19-Dec-1999

[TV Guide] Close-up recommends this weeks episode BABF07 "Grift of the Magi". "Tim Robbins and Gary Coleman provide guest voices in a riotous episode (for there is a riot) spoofing the annual 'must have' Christmas toy. When construction costs owed to Fat Tony (Joe Mantegna) bankrupt Springfield Elementary, a private company called the Child Development Group takes over. Its leader, Jim Hope (Robbins) promises a curriculum of 'less 'ick' and more 'yum'', but his real hope is to mine the kids' minds for ideas to create the perfect toy. When Lisa realizes the truth, she and Bart sneak past a security guard (Coleman) and obtain a sample product, a doll that seems to do everything -- and that includes destroying the other toys."

[TV Guide Canada] Bart, Lisa and their pals help a toy magnate (Tim Robbins) create the ultimate plaything for the Christmas season Gary Coleman and Joe Mantegna also guest-voice.

Ralph: Fun toys are fun!

Teacher: Well-said, Ralph, but we're trying to come up with a name for a toy.

Janey: Mrs. Fun?

Teacher: Not bad.

Ralph: Fun?

Teacher: Ralph, there are no right or wrong answers, but if you don't pipe down, I'm giving you an F.

Ralph: The before-teacher yelled at me, too.

Teacher: No one's yelling; we're just brainstorming names. Lisa, any ideas?

Lisa: [puts down book] Oh, a name with fun? Fungus, Funzo, Attila the Fun.

Teacher: [accusing] Lisa, are you doing math?!

Lisa: [nervous] Uh, just a few Venn diagrams.

Ralph: There's more under her chair!
