Release date(s) June 28, 2006

Superman Returns is a 2006 superhero film based on the fictional DC Comics character Superman.

The film begins as we learn that Superman has been missing for five years. He has traveled to where astronomers believed they had discovered the remains of Krypton. Then Superman returns to Earth, crashing back into his adoptive mother's crop field in a craft like the one that delivered the baby Kal-El. He awakes the next morning reminiscing about his childhood. He returns to the The Daily Planet and his life as Clark Kent in Metropolis. He learns Lois Lane is now a mother and has won the Pulitzer Prize for her article "Why the World Doesn't Need Superman."

During Superman's absence, Lex Luthor has been released. While away, Superman missed the appeals trial to testify against Lex. Upon his release, he tricks a rich widow into a sham wedding to get his hands on her money. Lex travels to the Fortress of Solitude, steals Kryptonian crystals, and returns to Metropolis to experiment with a tiny fragment. The growing crystal causes a blackout, interfering with the test flight of a new space shuttle tethered to a Boeing 777 — a plane which Lois Lane is aboard, covering the story. Clark flies into action as Superman and stops the plane from crashing into a baseball field.

Lockheed L-1011

In the early 1990s, Orbital Sciences began to use a converted L-1011-100 named Stargazer to launch Pegasus rockets into orbit around Earth.

In the ABC television series Lost, the set piece of the crashed plane was a retired L-1011, although it was supposed to represent a Boeing 777. The plane, which formerly served for Delta Air Lines, was cut apart and barged to the filming location in Hawaii.

JACK [off camera at first]: We must have been at about 40,000 feet when it happened. Hit an air pocket. Dropped, maybe, 200 feet. The turbulence was: I blacked out.

KATE: I didn't. I saw the whole thing. I knew that the tail was gone, but I couldn't bring myself to look back. And then the, the front of the plane broke off.

David Dunn: I wanted to ask you a question. It's gonna sound a little strange, just think about it for a second, okay?

Audrey Dunn: Okay.

David Dunn: When's the last time I was sick? Do you remember?

Audrey Dunn: Um, I don't know. It's been a while.

David Dunn: I haven't been sick this year, I know that.

Audrey Dunn: Okay.

David Dunn: Do you remember me getting sick?

Audrey Dunn: Um... not a specific day. What - what's this about?

David Dunn: Audrey, do you remember me ever getting sick? In the three years we lived in this house? In the old apartment? Before Joseph was born? Before we ever got married?

Audrey Dunn: I - I can't remember.

David Dunn: Don't you think that's kind of weird, not remembering one cold or a fever or a sore throat? What do you think it means?

Audrey Dunn: Um... I think it means probably too tired to remember.

Joseph Dunn: I thought maybe because you're my dad... I thought I might be like you... I'm not like you...

David Dunn: You are like me. We can both get hurt. I'm just an ordinary man.

Joseph Dunn: No, you're not... Why do you keep saying that?
