For example, Georgia-Pacific Corp. of Atlanta, which has 19 operations in the state, has spent $218 million in the last few years expanding its plants in Crossett, El Dorado and Ashdown. That's good news for Ashdown, population 5,150, where Georgia-Pacific employs about 1,500 at a paper mill.

Lisa Withem, manager of the Little River Chamber of Commerce in Ashdown, said she was not worried.

"Oh, no. They're growing," said Withem, who said she had heard that the plant was planning to increase its payroll.

Georgia-Pacific is also the dominate employer in Crossett, with 2,800 workers. "As far as I can tell, in talking with Georgia-Pacific officials, everything is in good shape," said Crossett Mayor Scott McCormick. Georgia-Pacific spokesman Chuck Jones said that the timber industry was healthy and that the company had no plans to leave Arkansas.

Elliot Moore: You're not interested in what happened to the bees?

[Jake shakes his head]

Elliot Moore: You should be more interested in science, Jake. You know why? Because your face is perfect. The problem is, your face is perfect at 15. Now if you were interested in science, you would know facts like the human nose and ears grow a fraction of an inch each year. So a perfect balance of features now might not look so perfect five years from now, and might look down right whack ten years from now.

[students laugh]

Elliot Moore: Come on, buddy. Take an interest in science. What could be the reason bees have vanished?

Jake: [after a long pause] An act of nature, and we'll never fully understand it.

Elliot Moore: Nice answer, Jake. He's right. Science will come up with some reason to put in the books, but in the end it'll be just a theory. I mean, we will fail to acknowledge that there are forces at work beyond our understanding. To be a scientist, you must have a respectful awe for the laws of nature.

[Jake raises his hand]

Elliot Moore: Jake?

Jake: How much does the human nose grow each year?

Elliot Moore: It's miniscule, buddy. Okay? Don't worry about it. You're going to be a heartthrob your whole life. I was just messing with you.

It's some kind of airborne chemical toxin that's been released in and around the park. They said to watch for warning signs. The first stage is confused speech. The second stage is physical disorientation, loss of direction. The third stage... is fatal.

Anti-terror chief warns of homegrown Breiviks

Detective chief superintendent Tony Mole says more would-be terrorists are schooling themselves online

Helen Pidd

The Guardian, Sunday 27 January 2013

More terror threats to the UK are coming from people who "self-radicalise" on the internet, like the Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik, the new head of one of the UK's busiest counter-terrorism commanders has warned.

Detective chief superintendent Tony Mole, who has just taken over running the North West Counter Terrorism Unit, said that al-Qaida had become a brand rather than a tangible terror outlet.

In an interview with the Guardian, Mole said more would-be terrorists are schooling themselves online. With the official threat level to the UK at substantial – meaning there is a strong possibility of an attack – police needed help from the community, he said.

The police can't be everywhere, Mole said, asking members of the public to help provide intelligence on potential threats. If people have a gut feeling that someone in their community has changed, they should call the confidential anti-terrorist hotline, he said.

Among warning signs he cited "travelling a lot, being vague about travel, having access to lots of different phones, buying chemicals, taking an interest in security, CCTV ... somebody who was happy one minute just living their normal life who gets very, very locked into something, changes their appearance. They may be a bit stronger in their views. You combine all that together, you get a gut feeling that that's not right."

He added: "If you know somebody well, you will notice changes in them. If you will see certain things you may think that's not right, that's out of character, that group of people have changed."

I also wonder who Chad Trammel is supposed to represent.

Trammel, when I saw him in '94 at our 10 year reunion, was a lawyer in the Air Force. He was telling me something about standing near B-52s at Barkesly I think it was, and the thought comes to mind, although I'm not sure from where, that he was saying something about kicking the tires. Back in '94, when I told him I was repairing ATM machines, he asked me if I ever thought about doing something else, as though he expected me to be doing more.

NORFOLK, VIRGINIA

"I am Gerhardt Falken," the man said. "I entered the Soviet Union six days ago through the port of Odessa. I have been for ten years an agent of the Bundesnachrichtendienst, the intelligence apparat of the government of West Germany. My assignment was to kill the Politburo at its Thursday-morning session by means of a bomb placed in a storage room directly beneath the fourth-floor conference room in which they meet." Lowe and Toland watched their televisions in total fascination. It was perfect. "Falken" spoke perfect Russian, with the precise syntax and diction that schoolteachers in the Soviet Union sought to achieve. His accent was that of Leningrad.

"I have run an import-export business in Bremen for many years, and I have specialized in trade with the Soviet Union. I have traveled into the Soviet Union many times, and on many of these occasions I have used my business identity to run agents whose mission was to weaken and spy upon the Soviet Party and military infrastructures."

The camera closed in. "Falken" was reading in a monotone from a script, his eyes seldom rising to the cameras. Behind the glasses on one side was a large bruise. His hands shook slightly when he changed pages of the script.

"Looks like they beat up on him some," Lowe observed.

"Interesting," Toland replied. "They're letting us know that they work people over."

Lowe snorted. "A guy who blows little kids up? You can burn the bastard at the stake, and who'll give a good Goddamn? Some serious thought went into this, my friend."

"I wish to make it clear," Falken went on in a firmer voice, "that I had no intention of injuring children. The Politburo was a legitimate political target, but my country does not make war on children."

A howl of disgust came from off-camera. As though on cue, the camera backed away to reveal a pair of uniformed KGB officers flanking the speaker, their faces impassive. The audience was composed of about twenty people in civilian clothes.

"Why did you come into our country?" demanded one of them.

"I have told you this."

"Why does your country wish to kill the leaders of our Soviet Party?"

"I am a spy," Falken replied. "I carry out assignments. I do not ask such questions. I follow my orders."

"How were you captured?"

"I was arrested at the Kiev Railroad Station. How I was caught they have not told me."

"Cute," Lowe commented.

"He called himself a spy," Toland objected. "You don't say that. You call yourself an 'officer.' An 'agent' is a foreigner who works for you, and a 'spy' is a bad guy. They use the same terms that we do."

The CIA/DIA report arrived on the telex printer an hour later. Gerhardt Eugen Falken. Age forty-four. Born in Bonn. Educated in public schools, good marks on his records-but his picture was missing from his high school yearbook. Military service as a draftee in a transport battalion whose records had been destroyed in a barracks fire twelve years before, honorable discharge found in his personal effects. University degree in liberal arts, good marks, but again no picture, and three professors who gave him B grades can't seem to recall him. A small import-export business. Where did the money come from to start it? Nobody could answer that one. Lived in Bremen quietly, modestly, and alone. Friendly man, after a fashion. Always nodded to his neighbors, but never socialized with them. A good-"very correct," his elderly secretary said-boss to his employees. Traveled a lot. In short, many people knew he existed, quite a few did business with his firm, but nobody really knew a thing about him.

ICELAND

Two days' rest was just what the doctor ordered for everyone. Sergeant Nichols could almost walk normally on his ankle, and the Americans, who were beginning to regard fish with distinct distaste filled up on the extra rations the Royal Marines had packed in.

Edwards's eyes traced around the horizon again. The human eye automatically locks onto movement, and she was moving. It was hard not to look. It was almost impossible. In fact, Edwards told himself, it was impossible to stand guard and not look around. The hell of it was, she thought it was funny. Their rescuers-Edwards knew better, but why upset her?-had also brought soap. A tiny lake half a mile from their hilltop perch was the designated bathing area. In hostile country no one went that far alone, and the lieutenant had naturally been detailed to look after her-and she after him. Guarding her as she bathed with a loaded rifle seemed absurd, even with Russians around. Her bruises were nearly healed, he noted as she dressed.

"Finished, Michael." They didn't have towels, but that was a small price to pay for smelling human. She came up to him with her hair still wet and an impish expression on her face. "I embarrass you. Sorry."

"It's not your fault." It was also impossible to be angry with her.

"The baby makes me fat," she said. Mike could scarcely tell, but then it wasn't his figure being changed.

"You look fine. I'm sorry if I looked when I shouldn't have."

'What is wrong?"

Edwards found himself struggling with his words again. "Well, after-after what happened to you, I mean, you probably don't need a bunch of strange men standing around looking at you when you're, well, naked."

"Red Storm Rising"

"Michael, you are not like that one. I know you would never hurt me. Even after what he do to me, you say I am pretty-when I grow fat."

"Vigdis, baby or no baby, you are the prettiest girl I have ever known. You're strong, and you're brave." And I think I love you, but I'm afraid to say so. "We just picked a bad time to meet, that's all."

"For me was a very good time, Michael." She took his hand. She smiled a lot now. She had a gentle, friendly smile.

"As long as you know me, every time you think about me, you'll remember that Russian."

"Yes, Michael, I will remember that. I remember that you save my life. I ask Sergeant Smith. He say you have orders not to come near Russians because it so dangerous for you. He say you come because of me. You do not even know me then, but you come."

"I did the right thing." He held both of her hands now. What do I say now? Darling, if we ever get out of this alive . . . that sounds like a bad movie. Edwards hadn't been sixteen in a long time, but now all the awkwardness that had poisoned his adolescence came back to him. Mike hadn't exactly been the makeout king of Eastpoint High School. "Vigdis, I'm not any good at this. It was different with Sandy. She understood me. I don't know how to talk to girls, hell, I'm not that good talking to people. I do weather maps, and play with computers, but I usually have to have a few beers in me before I get the nerve to say-"

"I know you love me, Michael." Her eyes sparkled when she revealed the secret.

"Well, yes."

HILL 152, ICELAND

Edwards took some solace in having predicted the cold front's arrival properly. The rain had come exactly on time, just after midnight. If there was anything to make the worst situation worse still, it was a steady cold rain. The showers were intermittent now, a ceiling of gray clouds two thousand feet over their heads, blown along by thirty-knot winds toward Iceland's mountainous center.

"Where are the fighters?" Edwards asked. He swept Reykjavik airport with his binoculars, but couldn't find the six fighters he'd reported on the previous evening. All the transports were gone also. He saw one Soviet helicopter and some tanks. There was very little traffic on the streets and roads he could see. Certainly not much for a Monday morning. Surely the commercial fishermen would be driving to their boats? "Anybody see them lift out?"

"No, sir. Weather we had last night, the whole Russian Air Force could have come in and left." Sergeant Smith was annoyed too, mainly with the weather. "Could be in those hangars, maybe."

About 2300 the previous night, they'd observed a streak of light like that of a rocket taking off, but whatever it had been aimed at had been lost in a rain shower. Edwards had not reported that, halfway wondering if it might have been lightning.

"What's that? That's no tank. Garcia, check it out-five hundred yards west of the terminal." The lieutenant handed the glasses over.

"Okay. That's some kinda tracked vehicle. Looks like it has some sort of-not a gun, there's three of them. Rocket launcher, maybe."

"SAMs," the sergeant commented. "How much you wanna bet that's what we saw shot off last night?"

"E.T., phone home." Edwards started putting his radio together.

"How many launchers and what type?" Doghouse asked.

"We see one launcher, possibly three missiles on it. We can't tell the type. I wouldn't know the difference anyway. They might have fired off a missile last night about 2300 local."

"Why the hell didn't you tell us?" Doghouse demanded.

"'Cause I didn't know what it was!'' Edwards nearly yelled. "Goddammit! We're reporting on everything we see, and you don't even believe half of what we tell you!"

"Settle down, Beagle. We believe you. I know it's hard. Anything else happening?"

"He knows it's hard," Edwards told his men. "Can't see much activity at all, Doghouse. Stiff early, but we'd expect civilian traffic on the streets."

"Copy that. Okay now, Edwards, real fast, what's your father's middle name?"

"Doesn't have one," Edwards said. "What-"

"The name of his boat?"

"The Annie Jay. What the hell is this?"

"What happened to your girlfriend Sandy?"

It was like a knife in the guts. The tone of his voice answered for him. "You go and fuck yourself 1"

"Copy that," the voice replied. "Sorry, Lieutenant, but you had to pass that test. We have no further orders for you yet. Tell you the truth, nobody's decided what to do about you. Stay cool and avoid contact. Same transmission schedule. If you get tagged and they try to make you play radio games, start off every transmission with our call sign and say that everything is going great. Got that? Going great."

"Roger. If you hear me say that, you know something's wrong. Out."

U.S. Frigate Hits Mine in Gulf; 6 Sailors Hurt

April 14, 1988|Associated Press

MANAMA, Bahrain — The U.S. Navy frigate Samuel B. Roberts hit a mine near Iran's Farsi Island today while on patrol in the Persian Gulf, U.S. officials said. The Pentagon said six sailors were injured.

At the time of the blast, the frigate was returning from international waters off Kuwait, where it had escorted the U.S.-reflagged Kuwaiti tanker Gas Queen, the executives said.

The single-tanker convoy reached Kuwait on Wednesday. Regions off Farsi and others near Qatar have been infested with mines, believed to have been laid by Iran. U.S.-led Western minesweeping operations in the two regions and elsewhere in the gulf last summer detected and detonated dozens of mines.

No Mine Sightings Reported

It was off Farsi last July that the U.S.-reflagged Kuwaiti tanker Bridgeton hit a mine in the first U.S.-protected convoy.

Howard said there had been no recent reports by minesweepers in the area that mines had been sighted.

The explosion "caused flooding in the engine room and some hull damage. The flooding is under control, and the ship is in the process of pumping out the water. It's operating under auxiliary power," Howard said.

Howard said that the Wainwright, a cruiser, was en route to the site to offer assistance.

Frigate Apparently Strikes Gulf Mine; 10 Sailors Hurt

April 15, 1988|JOHN M. BRODER | Times Staff Writer

WASHINGTON — A U.S. warship apparently hit a mine Thursday, injuring 10 American sailors, after it had escorted a U.S.-registered Kuwaiti tanker through the Persian Gulf, Defense Department officials said.

One Pentagon source told the Associated Press that sailors aboard the Roberts had seen "mine-like" objects in the water shortly before the explosion.

U.S. officials in the past have accused the Iranians of sowing mines in the gulf to intimidate shipping headed for Iraq, with whom Iran has been at war for eight years. Last fall, U.S. warships and helicopters seized an Iranian ship in the act of planting mines.

White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said the National Security Council had "routinely informed" President Reagan of Thursday's explosion, adding that the incident "emphasizes once again our concern for stopping the Iran-Iraq War."

However, U.S. officials refused to discuss possible retaliation. "It's not a declaration of war," said one Administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity. "Besides, who are you going to retaliate against?"

The explosion took place as the frigate was sailing south on a routine patrol Thursday morning after completing a convoy that included the Kuwaiti tanker Gas King the night before, Howard said.

The frigate was heading toward Bahrain under auxiliary power Thursday night, escorted by the cruiser Wainwright, officials said.

U.S. Attacks Iran Frigates, Oil Platforms, Sinks Boat : American Helicopter Is Missing

April 18, 1988|Times Wire Services

MANAMA, Bahrain — U.S. warships and aircraft destroyed two of Iran's Persian Gulf oil platforms today, sank a patrol boat and damaged two Iranian frigates that fired missiles at American planes.

Iranian naval forces responded with attacks on Arab oil facilities, U.S., British and Cypriot commercial vessels and on a press helicopter chartered by NBC.

It was the most intense direct U.S.-Iran conflict since President Reagan ordered last summer that Navy forces be strengthened in the gulf, where Iran and Iraq have been at war since September, 1980.

Later today Defense Secretary Frank C. Carlucci said that a two-man U.S. attack helicopter was missing and "we are concerned."

Defense Department officials said naval forces were searching for the Cobra chopper, a Marine aircraft that had been stationed aboard the cruiser Wainwright.

Washington called destruction of the oil platforms a "measured response" to the explosion of a mine, allegedly planted by Iran, that blew a hole in an American frigate last week and wounded 10 sailors.

Reagan said today's operations were a warning to Iran that "we will protect our ships and, if they threaten us, they'll pay a price. We undertook this action to make sure the Iranians have no illusions about the cost of irresponsible behavior."

No casualties were reported among U.S. forces. Iran's official Islamic Republic News Agency said there were deaths and injuries aboard the platforms but it did not say how many.

Gave Advance Warning

On Reagan's instructions, about 9 a.m. gulf time, two groups of Navy warships struck the Iranian oil platforms Sassan and Sirri, 100 miles apart in the southern Persian Gulf.

They gave the Iranians advance warning to evacuate the platforms, which have been used as speedboat bases for attacks on neutral shipping. Reagan ordered the attacks as retaliation for the mine that holed the frigate Samuel B. Roberts on Thursday.

Both platforms were destroyed and left ablaze, one by naval gunfire and the other by explosives that were placed on it, according to statements in Washington.

The Iranian news agency said U.S. warships hit the Sassan platform at 9 a.m. and, 23 minutes later, the Sirri platform off nearby Sirri Island.

Two Iranian warplanes tried to harass a U.S. warship but the ship fired missiles and the aircraft fled, shipping sources reported.

They said an Iranian patrol boat fired at the Wainwright, one of the ships attacking Sassan and Sirri, but did not hit it.

U.S. Sinks or Damages 6 Iran Ships in Persian Gulf Clashes : Tehran Strikes Back After Oil Rig Shellings

April 19, 1988|JAMES GERSTENZANG | Times Staff Writer

WASHINGTON — U.S. warships and aircraft sank or heavily damaged six Iranian navy ships Monday as a major confrontation erupted in the Persian Gulf in the wake of the United States' early morning strike against two Iranian oil platforms, the Reagan Administration said.

U.S. and Iranian forces fired on each other in the broadest and most direct conflict yet, suddenly escalating what for months had been a war of nerves in the volatile waterway.

After ordering U.S. naval units to destroy the oil platforms in the southern gulf, in what he described as a "measured response" to renewed Iranian mining of the gulf that damaged a U.S. frigate last week, President Reagan declared:

"We've taken this action to make certain the Iranians have no illusions about the cost of irresponsible behavior. We aim to deter further Iranian aggression, not provoke it."

'They'll Pay a Price'

He added: "They must know that we will protect our ships--and if they threaten us, they'll pay a price."

No American fatalities or injuries were reported, but Defense Secretary Frank C. Carlucci said Monday afternoon that a Cobra attack helicopter, carrying two crewmen, was late returning to a Navy cruiser and that a search was under way. Iran claimed that one of its warships had shot down an American helicopter.

There was no U.S. report of Iranian casualties, but crewmen were seen abandoning the oil platforms just before the facilities were destroyed.

The gulf clashes represented the most serious fighting between the United States and Iran since the stepped-up deployment of U.S. warships began nine months ago to protect Kuwaiti oil tankers threatened in the Iran-Iraq War.

Iranians Outgunned

The fighting left an Iranian frigate crippled and ablaze, another frigate heavily damaged and under tow and a patrol boat sunk.

Confrontation in the Persian Gulf : U.S. Humbling of Iran Viewed as a Turning Point in Gulf War

April 20, 1988|TYLER MARSHALL | Times Staff Writer

MANAMA, Bahrain — As Iranian leaders vowed Tuesday to avenge their losses in the previous day's clashes with U.S. forces in the Persian Gulf, regional analysts viewed the fighting as part of a new chapter that will alter the course of the seemingly endless Iran-Iraq War.

Some described the recent developments as a "watershed," although they admitted that it is not clear exactly where events are heading.

They noted that Monday's attack marked the first time that Iran's nine-year-old revolutionary government has been so humiliated by American military strength.

"The Americans have shown the extent of their firepower for all to see," noted Heino Kopietz, who monitors developments in the Persian Gulf War for the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. "It's bigger than any previous U.S. action against Iran. It's a watershed."

Iran's government-run radio said Tuesday that the attacks cost more than 40 Iranian lives in addition to two oil platforms, a patrol boat and two badly damaged frigates.

It quoted the commander of the Iranian navy, Commodore Mohammed Hussein Malekzadegan, as saying that 15 sailors aboard the patrol boat Joshan were killed and 20 others were wounded when it was hit by fire from the U.S. Navy cruiser Wainwright.

Lex Luthor: So the problem: How to make land more valuable between the time you buy it and the time you sell it. Now, this is California, the richest, most populous state in the union.

Superman: I don't need a geography lesson from you, Luthor.

Lex Luthor: Oh, yes, of course, you've been there. I do forget, you get around, don't you? Where was I?

Otis: California.

Lex Luthor: California, right. The San Andrea Fault. Maybe you've heard of it?

Superman: Yes. It's the joining of two land masses. The fault line is unstable and shifting which is why you get earthquakes in California from time to time.

Lex Luthor: Wonderful. Couldn't have said it better myself.

Modest boy who became a mass murderer

Sean Rayment, London

July 25, 2011.

IN THE space of 48 hours Anders Behring Breivik emerged from the obscurity of an Oslo suburb to become the worst mass killer in peacetime Europe.

Breivik was born on February 13, 1979 and grew up in western Oslo where, until recently, he lived with his mother in the wealthy suburb of Skoyen. Superficially, his upbringing appears to have been both middle-class and unremarkable. He attended the Handelsgym High School in Oslo and graduated with a masters degree from the Oslo School of Management.

In his late teens, he completed compulsory national service, where he received military training and learnt how to shoot.

George Walker Bush the homosexual blackmail victim of Al Qaida. Poor guy.

The spilled bottle of beer. In 1990, I can remember specifically, very specifically, a woman was at my apartment one night in Taylors South Carolina. I have thought about that scene before in recent terms because I have wondered about how that woman was someone I knew prior to 19 July 1989. On that night in 1990 in my apartment in Taylors South Carolina, we were kissing, I am telling you, and one of us knocked over her bottle of beer, as we were both drinking beer from my refrigerator after arriving clandestinely at my apartment, because we did not want anyone to know she was there at my apartment, although neither one of us was married to anybody else. At least, now that I think about it as I write this paragraph, I only know I was not married to anyone else at that time in 1990. So anyway, the bottle of beer spilled on the carpet and under the couch. I told her to ignore it but she insisted on cleaning it up.

What this also reminds me of the ship's library aboard the United States Navy warship USS Wainwright CG 28. I cannot recall if the USS Taylor FFG 50 even had a ship's library. I guess it did but I never looked for it because I had a harder job on that ship. As on both ships I was assigned to in the United States Navy fleet prior to 1990, we were deployed out to sea a lot and I used to go into the USS Wainwright CG 28 ship's library to find paperbacks books to read because even when I was on watch, my only job was to sit for hours at a time in front of large mainframe-style computers that required only for someone to listen for an alarm to sound indicating a computer program fault that for all my experience was always the result of hardware failure. Computer maintenance could not even be performed, or even my personal preference of writing computer code, because at Condition 3 steaming the guided missile fire control computers I was responsible for had to be battle ready twenty four hours a day unless maintenance was scheduled and approved by the Combat Systems department officers or was required because of hardware failure. So I read a lot of books as I sat there in Missile Plot on the night shift. At some point, the notion dawned on me that just about every book I was reading from the ship's library had at least one instance of hardcore homosexual activity. As I thought back over that, I wondered why such material would even be allowed into the ship. Then eventually I wondered if homosexuality was a problem in the United States Navy. I would not have even wondered about that if not for reading those books from the ship's library. So I thought maybe that in itself could be a good reason for someone building a book list that consisted of homosexual activity. The reason was if there was indeed a problem in the fleet with homosexuality. The books I read described homosexuality as far back as World War 2.

You all look at me as if I'm some kind of a saint or visionary or something.

Starfleet Commander William T. Riker: I don't think you're a saint, Doc, but you did have a vision. And now we're sitting in it.

Dr. Zefram Cochrane: You want to know what my vision is? Dollar signs. Money. I didn't build this ship to usher in a new era for humanity. You think I want to go to the stars? I don't even like to fly! I take trains! I built this ship so that I could retire to some tropical island filled with naked women.

Norway's island survivors on 2-hour fight for life

By Shawn Pogatchnik, Associated Press

Published: Saturday, July 23, 2011 3:43 p.m. MDT

Witnesses say the gunman enters a village of tents, the residential heart of the weeklong retreat, and spots desperate individuals hoping he'll spare them if they run back inside their homes. But the killer is seen working his way tent by tent, shooting many point-blank, one by one.

5:20 p.m.:

Kaur joins a group of panicked, confused campers. They are running from the approaching gunman, his "POLICE" moniker crystal-clear to see from even middle distance.

"My first thought was: Why are the police shooting at us? What the hell?" she writes.

More than a dozen crowd into a dark corner of a camp building, and all lie down on the floor. She cries quietly — then sees her best friend from camp, a boy, through a window.

"I wondered if I should go out and bring him to me. I did not. I saw fear in his eyes," she writes.

5:25 p.m.:

Kaur says a burst of gunfire extremely close to the building triggers panic and the entire group leaps out of a far window. Several suffer injuries, including a girl with a broken ankle, but the shooter doesn't immediately pursue them. She takes new cover behind a low brick wall, telephones her mother on her cell phone, and sends a text to her father.

"Many were there," she writes. "I prayed, prayed, prayed. I hope that God saw me."

5:30 p.m.:

As the gunman picks off lone campers who run from their hiding spots as he draws near, many find themselves at the shoreline with only one apparent escape route — the water.

Kaur says the gunman tries to draw out the hiders near the brick wall, shouting, "I'm from the police!" Campers shout back, "Prove it!" He shoots at those who move. She lies still, on top of the legs of a teenage girl covered in blood.

Today the first foreign dream wasn't too clear either. It had something to do with me, someother characters, and something about the stars. We were under the stars, or we were talking to the stars. I can visualize the sky with the stars but they may have also been a metaphor for people. Then I left somewhere and there was something about a goose, not sure what that meant, maybe something to do with staying meant something about a cooked goose.

The second foreign dream had a lot of detail. I was sitting on a bus with someone that I knew but I don't know who it was. It may have been Britney Spears but that makes no sense. I was sitting next to her and she was someone that I had lived with before, someone I had a relationship with, like a girlfriend. I was getting off the bus to a place I was staying that I don't recognize from anyplace I've been in real life. She asked me if I was really staying there, she may have commented that it was amazing I was staying there, or someone else said that. Apparently, it was the same place she and I had lived during our relationship. It was some kind of little travel trailer. A young woman was letting me stay there. I was taking up a little open seat or bench in a hallway of the trailer. I had a little storage bin to put my stuff in.

As I was riding the bus to the VA, I remembered something else that happened at Microsoft. I was complaining to a friend one day about how Sharon Bjeletich had put a curtain up at the entrance to her cube so no one could see in. That was the second cube I sat in after moving to that new floor in the Bellevue office. Sharon sat two cubicles from me. Eddy Hahn was in the cube between us. I believe that Sharon put that curtain up because she, and everyone else, knew that there were cameras outside the building staring in at me and she was being captured in the frame. I am certain that happened in 2000 because I remember something from Halloween when I was still on that floor and by Halloween of 2001, we were all out at Issaquah. Halloween of 1999, I was still a TAM and I remember another TAM dressed up as a hockey player and he asked me if I was trying to work. Eddy is that guy I wrote about that worked in Las Vegas before Microsoft. He is from Budapest. I can't remember where Sharon was from originally but she is the one I wrote about that reminds me of Sarajevo. Eddy has one of those masks from that movie....can't remember the name now. Wasn't it something similar to "I Know What You Did Last Summer."? That movie came up one time when I was still a TAM. Something with Wally Simpson. I was leaving notes around his desk with that phrase on it. He said his son found the one I left in his closed laptop.

Another look-alike I observed at Microsoft. Jerry Boesch resembled this actor and Tom Devey, of Microsoft Corporation, resembled Ilan Ramon, along with Ramona Ramadas. There was the time Microsoft had people, among others, such as Clarence from Hawaii, spreading rumors that I was a U.S. Navy SEAL, which I denied. There was Wally Simpson before that spreading rumors that I was a sniper, which I protested.

I remember one time at Microsoft I told Wally Simpson he resembled "Bosley" from the original "Charlie's Angels." He responded with a "where did that come from?" I'm not really sure if he was surprised that I said that. He was the guy I was kidding about having a band degree. Another time in 1999, I heard he was spreading rumors about me being on a rooftop of a nearby high-rise building with a sniper rifle. I don't know what they were doing - were they trying to get me to demonstrate my skills?

That first week I was working at Microsoft beginning Monday, 12/7/1998, the group of people I worked with went to see the premiere of "Star Trek: Nemesis" during the workday, which I think was a Wednesday or it could have been a Thursday. I don't think it was Friday but I cannot recall for certain. Anyway, I had that white van from Avis that they gave me to drive until my car arrived as it was being shipped from South Carolina with the rest of my household items and I drove several people from that group at Microsoft to the theatre. I remember Ken Burns was there and Wally Simpson and Rhonda Halfmann I think, I remember Ken Burns for certain maybe Wally. I might be thinking Rhonda was there because she was with us in Texas a few weeks later and I was driving a van down there as well. So anyway I think it was Ken Burns that was commenting about the movie after it was over and we got back to the van and I was driving us back to the office and my first comment in the conversation after watching the film was that I complained about how they did not even go to "warp" speed during the movie.

Attorneys paint different views of Smith in opener

RICK BRAGG New York Times

WED 07/19/1995 HOUSTON CHRONICLE

UNION, S.C. - The prosecution urged the jurors at the Susan Smith trial to hold on to their common sense in the weeks ahead, and they would come to see Smith as a selfish, malicious killer who sacrificed her children for the love of the son of a rich industrialist.

The defense begged them to look into their hearts and, through that softer focus, find a disturbed, childlike figure who, after a lifetime of sadness, snapped like a dry twig.

As simplistic as those opposing views might seem, they will be the crux of the next month of testimony in Smith's capital murder trial, which officially began Tuesday with opening statements in the elegant old Union County Courthouse.

"For nine days in the fall of 1994, Susan Smith looked this country in the eyes and lied," said Keith Giese, a special prosecutor and assistant to the state's prosecutor, Tommy Pope. "She begged God to return her children to safety, and the whole time she knew her children were lying dead at the bottom of John D. Long Lake.

Chapter 20

The Dance of the Vampires

USS Nimitz

Toland had been a busy fellow for the past twelve hours. The data on Iceland came in slowly, one confusing piece at a time, and even now he didn't have enough to call a clear picture. The group's orders had been changed, though only after too many hours of indecision. The mission to reinforce Iceland was a washout. For the past ten hours the battle group had been heading due east toward friendly air cover from England and France. Someone had decided that if the Marines could not go to Iceland, then they might find useful employment in Germany. Bob had expected them to be diverted to Norway, where a Marine Amphibious Brigade was already in place, but getting them there could prove difficult. A furious air battle had been raging over northern Norway for almost twenty hours, with losses heavy on both sides. The Norwegians had started the war with scarcely a hundred modern fighters. They were screaming for help, but there was no help for anyone as yet.

"They're not just chewing the Norwegians up," Toland observed. "They're driving them south. Most of the attacks are on the northern bases, and they're not giving them any breather at all."

Chip nodded. "That figures. Gives their Backfires a straighter shot at us. Briefing time."

The Ghost is out of the bag.

I wouldn't even make this kind of report normally and I have resisted for a few minutes the impulse to write about this but I just cannot shake the feeling that it is important to note. A short while after I made my last web log post, I had a brief moment of acid reflux from my lunch, which was some of those very cheap frozen chicken and beef pot pies you can get at the supermarket. I had the strongest sense that something dead was trying to get out of me. The experience was momentary and I quickly chewed a couple of peppermint flavored Tums that I have standing by at moments notice and the feeling has largely past. The reason I cannot shake the impulsive to write about such a detail is because I have the sense that is something to do with me being affected by whatever evil it is that permeates that region in Seattle Washington State. We all affected by it. I write this now because I thought about a few things, such as the girl on the agriculture ship that gets blown up by nuclear missiles from the "Cylons," and I only just now as I write this sentence associate in my mind a detail that I established hours ago in my next comprehensive report. I also think about "28 Weeks Later," and of how that message that is created itself by the people who are uncontrollably affected by the evil, represents the opposite of the truth. For me, it just means that I am completely cured of that effect of the evil presence that permeates Seattle Washington state and that I came here long ago to fight personally.

KIEV, THE UKRAINE

"Children!" Alekseyev barely said aloud. "For our maskirovka the Party murders children! Our own children. What have we come to?"

What have I come to? If I can rationalize the judicial murder of four colonels and some privates, why shouldn't the Politburo blow up a few children ... Alekseyev told himself there was a difference.

His General was also pale as he switched off the television set. "'Arise, ye Russian people.' We must set these thoughts aside, Pasha. It is hard, but we must. The State is not perfect, but it is the State we must serve."

Alekseyev eyed his commander closely. The General had almost choked on those words: he was already practicing how to use them on the crucial few who would know of this outrage, yet had to perform their duties as though it never existed. There will come a day of reckoning, Pasha told himself, a day of reckoning for all the crimes committed in the name of Socialist Progress. He wondered if he'd live to see it and decided he probably wouldn't.
