The most recent photo of me on the internet, that I know of, is from the Ironman triathlon in Idaho in 2004. Earlier photos of me, which I can't find now on the internet, in triathlon and marathon events I had sent to Lesa Jewell Withem in email. She sent me a photograph of her family. 2004 was definitely the last deliberate exercise I have had since then. I have probably put on about fifty pounds since then from lack of exercise. I have a lousy diet too because of how I distrust people that prepare my food. I anticipate that even the food I purchase, that is lousy, will be made lousier by Microsoft al Qaida just because they have a psychopathic need to make me even more miserable. They track everything about my life. They watch me in the grocery stores.
I keep hoping I will somebody get back to a normal life where I can start exercising again for triathlons but I know those days are over. The mob rule state of Washington and Microsoft al Qaida will never let me live a peaceful life. They will never stop.
Lately I've been thinking of sending my revised reports to Nancy Pelosi, considering all my statements were under the haze of that medication they gave me when I first went to the police in 2005. I'll probably ask her if, when Microsoft al Qaida does finally kill me, she will attend the funeral they have for me.

PINK FLOYD
"Us And Them"
Us and Them
And after all we're only ordinary men
Me, and you
God only knows it's not what we would choose to do
Forward he cried from the rear
and the front rank died
And the General sat, as the lines on the map
moved from side to side
Black and Blue
And who knows which is which and who is who
Up and Down
And in the end it's only round and round and round
Haven't you heard it's a battle of words
the poster bearer cried
Listen son, said the man with the gun
There's room for you inside
Down and Out
It can't be helped but there's a lot of it about
With, without
And who'll deny that's what the fightings all about
Get out of the way, it's a busy day
And I've got things on my mind
For want of the price of tea and a slice
The old man died

I might have sent Lesa Jewell photos from the two sprint triathlons I finished in 2003. I don't know. Seafair maybe.
I remember the photos from one where I wondered to myself if a woman had timed it so she would be in the photo with me. The photographer was in clear view.
Those sprint-distance triathlon, which I think as the most common, are the easiest distance for me to cover. Or at least they were. I doubt I could finish the swim course today. Back then though that distance was more of a training day for me. I have often thought I could finish that distance every day seven days a week. I probably could have finished the olympic-distance triathlons every day. Maybe. Those were only twice this distance of the sprint triathlon. Certainly three times per week I could have easily covered that distance.
So anyway, I sent an email to Steve Ballmer one day when I was working at Microsoft. I had read something somewhere about him being a basketball player. I might have read that somewhere in information they sent out to Microsoft employees or I read it in the local news. So one day I sent him an email and I opened with a paragraph that included precisely or very similar to the phrase "I understand you're an athlete too."
What I was writing about was how the Ironman corporation had a competition that was for president's of corporations and I wrote to Ballmer telling him about how I was trying to finish and Ironman triathlon and I wondered if he would compete for Microsoft in that Ironman event for corporate presidents.
That was when I wrote about how I had to drop out of Ironman Coeur d'Alene because the heat had been extreme that day and I specifically used the phrase that I couldn't "handle the heat."
I did finish the course the next year and that day I finished was 27 June 2004.
Sometime around that time back in 2003 I had read also about the director of human resources being a competitor in Ironman triathlons and I wrote to him about how I could wait to get back out to Coeur d'Alene and rub my toes in the sand of the lake's beach.
Ballmer responded with a short message that was precisely the words or very similar to: "Not for me, but thanks."

"Next time you guys find me wounded in the street," Ryan said, "let me die there."
The policeman laughed. "Bloody ungrateful fellow you are."
"True."
The elevator opened at the lobby and he was grateful to see that it had been cleared except for the Duke of Edinburgh and a gaggle of security people.
"Good evening, My Lord." Ryan tried to stand, but was waved back down.
"Hello, Jack! How are you feeling?" They shook hands, and for a moment he was afraid that the Duke himself would wheel him out the door. That would have been intolerable, but the police officer resumed his pushing as the Duke walked alongside. Jack pointed forward.
"Sir, I will improve at least fifty percent when we make it through that door."
"Hungry?"
"After hospital food? I just might eat one of your polo horses."
The Duke grinned. "We'll try to do a little better than that."
Jack noticed seven security people in the lobby. Outside was a Rolls-Royce . . . and at least four other cars, along with a number of people who did not look like ordinary passersby. It was too dark to see anyone prowling the roofs, but they'd be there, too. Well, Ryan thought, they've learned their lessons on security. Still a damned shame, though, and it means the terrorists have won a victory. If they make society change, even a little, they've won something. Bastards. The cop brought him right to the Rolls.
"Can I get up now?" The cast was so heavy that it ruined his balance. Ryan stood a little too fast and nearly smashed into the car, but caught himself with an angry shake of the head before anyone had to grab for him. He stood still for a moment, his left arm sticking out like the big claw on a fiddler crab, and tried to figure how to get into the car. It turned out that the best way was to stick the cast in first, then rotate clockwise as he followed it. The Duke had to enter from the other side, and it turned out to be rather a snug fit. Ryan had never been in a Rolls before, and found that it wasn't all that spacious.
"Comfortable?"
"Well – I'll have to be careful not to punch a window out with this damned thing." Ryan leaned back and shook his head with an eyes-closed smile.
"You really are glad to be out of hospital."
"My Lord, on that you can wager one of your castles. This makes three times I've been in the body and fender shop, and that's enough." The Duke motioned for the driver to pull out. The convoy moved slowly into the street, two lead cars and two chase cars surrounding the Rolls-Royce. "Sir, may I ask what's happening this evening?"
"Very little, really. A small party in your honor, with just a few close friends."
Jack wondered what "a few close friends" meant. Twenty? Fifty? A hundred? He was going to dinner at . . . Scotty, beam me up! "Sir, you know that you've really been too kind to us."
"Bloody rubbish. Aside from the debt we owe you – not exactly what one would call a small debt, Jack. Aside from that, it's been entirely worthwhile to meet some new people. I even finished your book Sunday night. I thought it was excellent; you must send me a copy of your next one. And the Queen and your wife have got on marvelously. You are a very lucky chap to have a wife like that – and that little imp of a daughter. She's a gem, Jack, a thoroughly wonderful little girl."
Ryan nodded. He often wondered what he had done to be so lucky. "Cathy says that she's seen about every castle in the realm, and thanks a lot for the people you put with her. It made me feel much better about having them run all over the place."
The Duke waved his hand dismissively. It wasn't worth talking about. "How did the research go on your new book?"
"Quite well, sir." The one favorable result of his being in the hospital was that he'd had the time to sift through all of it in detail. His computer had two hundred new pages of notes stored in its bubble chips, and Ryan had a new perspective on judging the actions of others. "I guess I've learned one thing from my little escapade. Sitting in front of a keyboard isn't quite the same as looking into the front end of a gun. Decisions are a little different from that perspective." Ryan's tone made a further statement.
The Duke clapped him on the knee. "I shouldn't think that anyone will fault yours."
"Maybe. The thing is, my decision was made on pure instinct. If I'd known what I was doing – what if I had done the wrong thing on instinct?" He looked out the window. "Here I am, supposed to be an expert on naval history, with special emphasis on how decisions are made under stress, and I'm still not satisfied with my own. Damn." Jack concluded quietly: "Sir, you don't forget killing somebody. You just don't."
"You oughtn't to dwell on it. Jack."
"Yes, sir." Ryan turned back from the window. The Duke was looking at him much the same way his father had, years before. "A conscience is the price of morality, and morality is the price of civilization. Dad used to say that many criminals don't have a conscience, not much in the way of feelings at all. I guess that's what makes us different from them."
"Exactly. Your introspection is a fundamentally healthy thing, but you should not overdo it. Put it behind you. Jack. It was my impression of Americans that you prefer to look to the future rather than the past. If you cannot do that professionally, at least try to do it personally."
"Understood, sir. Thank you." Now if I could just make the dreams stop. Nearly every night Jack relived the shoot-out on The Mall. Almost three weeks now. Something else they didn't tell you about on TV. The human mind has a way of punishing itself for killing a fellow man. It remembers and relives the incident again and again. Ryan hoped it would stop someday.

"How much do we know about these ULA guys?" Jack asked. "I never saw very much at Langley."
"Not a hell of a lot. The boss-man's a chap named Kevin O'Donnell. He used to be in the PIRA. He started throwing rocks in the streets and supposedly worked his way up to head counterintelligence man. The Provos are pretty good at that. Have to be. The Brits are always working to infiltrate the Organization. The word is that he got a little carried away cleansing the ranks, and barely managed to skip out before they gave him Excedrin Headache number three-five-seven. Just plain disappeared and hasn't been spotted since. A few sketchy reports, like maybe he spent some time in Libya, like maybe he's back in Ulster with a new face, like maybe he has a lot of money – want to guess where from? – to throw around. All we know for sure is that he's one malignant son of a bitch.
"His organization?" Murray set the milkshake down. "It's gotta be small, probably less than thirty. We think he had part of the breakout from Long Kesh last summer. Eleven hard-core Provos got out. The RUC bagged one of 'em two days later and he said that six of the eleven went south, probably to Kevin's outfit. He was a little pissed by that. They were supposed to come back to the PIRA fold, but somebody convinced them to try something different. Some very bad boys – they had a total of fifteen murders among them. The one you killed is the only one to show up since."
"Are they that good?" Ryan asked.
"Hey, the PIRA are the best terrorists in the world, unless you count those bastards in Lebanon, and those are mostly family groups. Hell of a way to describe them, isn't it? But they are the best. Well organized, well trained, and they believe, if you know what I mean. They really care about what they're doing. The level of commitment these characters have to the Cause is something you have to see to believe."
"You've been in on it?"
"Some. I've been able to sit in on interrogations – the other side of the two-way mirror, I mean. One of these guys wouldn't talk – wouldn't even give 'em his name! – for a week. Just sat there like a sphinx. Hey, I've chased after bank robbers, kidnappers, mob guys, spies, you name it. These fellows are real pros – and that's the PIRA, maybe five hundred real members, not even as big as a New York Mafia family, and the RUC – that's the Royal Ulster Constabulary, the local cops – is lucky to convict a handful in a year. They have a law of omerta up there that would impress the old-time Sicilians. But at least the cops have a handle on who the bastards are. The ULA – we got a couple of names, a few pictures, and that's it. It's almost like the Islamic Jihad bums. You only know them from what they do."
"What do they do?" Ryan asked.
"They seem to specialize in high-risk, high-profile operations. It took over a year to confirm that they exist at all; we thought they were a special-action group of the PIRA. They're an anomaly within the terrorist community. They don't make press releases, they don't take public credit for what they do. They go for the big-time stuff and they cover their tracks like you wouldn't believe. It takes resources to do that. Somebody is bankrolling them in a pretty big way. They've been identified for nine jobs we're sure of, maybe two others. They've only had three operations go bad – quite a track record. They missed killing a judge in Londonderry because the RPG round was a dud – it still took his bodyguard out. They tried to hit a police barracks last February. Somebody saw them setting up and phoned in – but the bastards must have been monitoring the police radio. They skipped before the cavalry arrived. The cops found an eighty-two-millimeter mortar and a box of rounds – high-explosive and white phosphorus, to be exact. And you got in the way of the last one.
"These suckers are getting pretty bold," Murray said. "On the other hand, we got one now."
"We?" Ryan said curiously. "It's not our fight."
"We're talking terrorists. Jack. Everybody wants them. We swap information back and forth with the Yard every day.

You see, I sent through email a link to Lesa Jewell with photos of me at Ironman Utah 2002. Maybe that was both Utah and Ironman Coeur d'Alene 2003 when I didn't finish the course (I told everyone including an email I sent to Steve Ballmer that I dropped out of the 2003 course because I couldn’t handle the heat) but they still had a photo of me on the bicycle. Anyway, I'm pretty certain I was emailing her back in 2002 and I think I contacted her first after I discovered classmates.com. One time, after I sent the link - or did I actually send photo images? - she sent back a family photo. I might have used my microsoft.com email address for that. I don't recall. I recall being aware of not using my microsoft.com email address for personal use and I also had personal email addresses. I routinely checked those personal email addresses from computers that belonged to Microsoft and from within their corporate computer network.

Christie smells setup, won't answer Twinkie query
Updated 12:11 p.m., Friday, November 16, 2012
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says he wasn't about to take the bait: a question dealing with that quintessential junk food, Twinkies.
So when asked Friday at a news conference about Twinkies-maker Hostess shutting down, the target of many a fat joke begged off.
The governor quipped: "I know it! You people are the worst! This is a setup! I am not answering questions on Twinkies, no, no, no, no, no, no. It's bad that I even said the word 'Twinkie' from behind this microphone."
Christie has tried for years to lose weight and often jokes about his caloric struggles. He once likened his weight loss efforts to "throwing a couple deck chairs off of the Titanic."

Libby Appeals Sentencing Ruling
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: June 20, 2007
I. Lewis Libby Jr., who is facing prison for lying in an investigation in a C.I.A. leak case, has asked a federal appeals court to delay his sentence. Mr. Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, was sentenced on June 5 to 30 months in prison. The judge in the case, Reggie B. Walton, last week affirmed his earlier decision that Mr. Libby should not be allowed to remain free until his appeals were exhausted.

Ryan tried to blink away the blue dots that swirled around his eyes as the television crews set up their own lights. Why the newspaper photographers couldn't wait for the powerful TV lights, he didn't know, and didn't bother asking. Everyone was kind enough to ask how he felt – but nothing short of respiratory arrest would have gotten them out of the room.
It could have been worse, of course. Dr. Scott had told the newspeople rather forcefully that his patient needed rest to recover speedily, and Nurse Kittiwake was there to glower at the intruders. So press access to Ryan was being limited to no more than the number of people who would fit into his room. This included the TV crew. It was the best sort of bargain Jack could get. The cameramen and sound technicians took up space that would otherwise be occupied by more inquisitorial reporters.
The morning papers – Ryan had been through the Times and the Daily Telegraph – had carried reports that Ryan was a former (or current) employee of the Central Intelligence Agency, something that was technically not true, and that Jack had not expected to become public in any case. He found himself remembering what the people at Langley said about leaks, and how pleased they'd been with his offhand invention of the Canary Trap. A pity they couldn't use it in my case, Ryan told himself wryly.

"You gentlemen work together?" Ryan sipped at the bubbling wine.
"Judge Moore told me you were a clever chap," Charleston observed.
"Excuse me? Judge who?"
"Nicely done, Doctor Ryan," Holmes smiled as he finished off his glass. "I understand that you used to play football – the American kind, that is. You were on the junior varsity team, weren't you?"
"Varsity and junior varsity, but only in high school. I wasn't big enough for college ball," Ryan said, trying to mask his uneasiness. "Junior Varsity" was the project name under which he'd been called in to consult with CIA.
"And you wouldn't happen to know anything about the chap who wrote Agents and Agencies'!" Charleston smiled. Jack went rigid.
"Admiral, I cannot talk about that without –"
"Copy number sixteen is sitting on my desk. The good judge told me to tell you that you were free to talk about the 'smoking word-processor.' "
Ryan let out a breath. The phrase must have come originally from James Greer. When Jack had made the Canary Trap proposal to the Deputy Director, Intelligence, Admiral James Greer had made a joke about it, using those words. Ryan was free to talk.

The first instance I could find of me publishing publicly details about 2/11/06 on my blog was 29 May 2009. Before that there was no way publicly to know what I had written to myself in private email.
I have a large text file that is the complete text of my entire blog. As far as I know, the blog hosting website doesn't have a feature for exporting the website to a text file and I have been updating the file as I make each posting. The file is about 186 megabytes. If you want it I'll send it to you. Makes it easy to search.
About a year after I starting making blog posts I suddenly thought, in my Veterans Hospital drugged-up muddled mind that I should take a different approach to making a backup of my blog. If I had saved each posting as an html complete file then I could use Microsoft Visual Basic and Microsoft Word to program a kick-ass search tool.
Instead I didn't give it much more thought because, I was certain, there is no way any of that is going to last very soon. Surely I would be home by Christmas 2006.
So now my blog site has 7359 posts. I could go back and start saving them individually but really what is the point.
Remember in the 2000 film "Unbreakable" how scared Bruce Willis seems when the kid has his handgun. Isn't that a brilliant ploy in 2000? I just remember the year 2000 as being terribly depressed. Sometime in the year 2002 my (surrogate) mother came out again to visit me. Earlier she had stayed in my apartment in Bellevue Washington. I loved that apartment. It was almost all glass on the outside wall of the living room. Anyway, she came out to visit me, on a business trip to Bellevue for her employer, and she brought a cute young woman with her that I had never met before. We were at lunch and Thedia mentioned how soldiers in war always remember the anniversary of the day they got shot. The cute young woman asked me breathlessly "Were you shot at?" I went on to describe that deployment to the Persian Gulf. I was so depressed after that conversation that I didn't even call her to tell her I wasn't going to meet them later for dinner as I had promised. I never do that. I always show up as I tell someone I will or I call them to let them know if I can't make it. That day, I just couldn't do anything and I stayed at my apartment in Issaquah.
That was 09 July 1988 we returned to port in Charleston. Or so I think. I do know for certain a local television crew came on board to interview the captain as we steamed through Charleston harbor for the navy base. My girlfriend at the time told me as we sat watching the news later that evening on television that she saw me too on the video. I was the phone-talker for the captain during such evolutions as arriving and departing port, when restricted maneuvering conditions were in effect, and the news crew captured me in the video while talking to the captain. They were on the bridge for what I think was a couple hours, as it took a long time steam through the river to the base, and I felt as though the cameraman had the camera pointed at me most of that time.
July 9th was the same day the USS Oklahoma City was commissioned into fleet service. It is also Tom "Big" Hanks birthday.
Petraeus. What a joke. He's homosexual. They all are now. It's some kind of Microsoft Bill Gates transvestite propaganda.
You see, Microsoft Bill Gates has had her "Come to Jesus" moment about federal prosecution. She-he-it knows that federal prosecution is guaranteed.
So now they have the Pentagon stuffed with homosexuals because that is some kind of transvestite propaganda ploy about male aggression.
So if a war hero starts to prosecute Microsoft Bill Gates - that poor sorrowful figure who can't get a fair jury trial by her peers - then their lawyers play the transvestite propaganda card.
Suddenly the homosexuals in the Pentagon closet start coming out - most notably George Bush that great leader of the Gulf War who personally stood up to Saddam Hussein and punched him in his raghead face - and suddenly the public is informed.
The great American heroes are gay.
The cause of male aggression is homosexuality, according to Microsoft Bill Gates, that poor, poor misunderstood girl.
Thus the greatest American war heroes are the greatest homosexuals.
The American public is amused. The steadfast heroes of the United States military are getting bent.

That was sometime in 2002 when my manager at Microsoft, Kirk Tavener, showed me that pornographic video title "Priceless" in the privacy of his office at Microsoft and during salary negotiations. The video had two people talking about oral sex and about returning favors.
I raised hell about inside Microsoft. His manager told me she got him to give her a copy of the video. She sent it to me in email. One day later she came by and stood looking at me in the face and started talking about triathlon and she mentioned something about 'biathlons.' I corrected her that the actual name for the subject we were discussing was 'duathlon.'
Sometime after that I went out and made a rare extravagant purchase for a new bicycle. I purchased a Litespeed titanium bicycle from REI in Redmond. Before that I had been riding a blue Schwinn that I brought out here from South Carolina.
The manager who replaced Kirk Tavener reminded me a lot in appearance of that actor from the 1986 film "Iron Eagle." That actor portrays the father of "Doug Masters" and is the one who gets shot in the shoulder by rifle fire from the Arab soldier.

In regard to his companions his mind wavered between two opinions, according to his mood. Sometimes he inclined to believing them all heroes. In fact, he usually admired in secret the superior development of the higher qualities in others. He could conceive of men going very insignificantly about the world bearing a load of courage unseen, and although he had known many of his comrades through boyhood, he began to fear that his judgment of them had been blind. Then, in other moments, he flouted these theories, and assured him that his fellows were all privately wondering and quaking.
His emotions made him feel strange in the presence of men who talked excitedly of a prospective battle as of a drama they were about to witness, with nothing but eagerness and curiosity apparent in their faces. It was often that he suspected them to be liars.
He did not pass such thoughts without severe condemnation of himself. He dinned reproaches at times. He was convicted by himself of many shameful crimes against the gods of traditions.
In his great anxiety his heart was continually clamoring at what he considered the intolerable slowness of the generals. They seemed content to perch tranquilly on the river bank, and leave him bowed down by the weight of a great problem. He wanted it settled forthwith. He could not long bear such a load, he said. Sometimes his anger at the commanders reached an acute stage, and he grumbled about the camp like a veteran.

Felony murder rule
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The rule of felony murder is a legal doctrine in some common law jurisdictions that broadens the crime of murder in two ways. First, when an offender kills accidentally or without specific intent to kill in the commission of a felony, the offender can be charged with murder. Second, it makes any participant in such a felony criminally liable for any deaths that occur during or in furtherance of that felony.
http://legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/Felony-Murder+Rule
THE FREE DICTIONARY
Felony-Murder Rule
A Rule of Law that holds that if a killing occurs during the commission or attempted commission of a felony (a major crime), the person or persons responsible for the felony can be charged with murder.
Generally an intent to kill is not necessary for felony-murder. The rule becomes operative when there is a killing during or a death soon after the felony, and there is some causal connection between the felony and the killing.

THE ENCYCLOPEDIA of ARKANSAS HISTORY & CULTURE
Titan II Missiles
Following the Soviet Union’s detonation of its first thermonuclear bomb in 1953, the United States began actively developing an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). The Titan II Missile program was a Cold War weapons system featuring fifty-four launch complexes in three states. Eighteen were in Arkansas, from which intercontinental ballistic missiles carrying nine-megaton nuclear warheads could be launched to strike targets as far as 5,500 miles away.
Two of the most noteworthy disasters that occurred in the Titan II program took place in Arkansas. The first happened on August 9, 1965, when fifty-three civilian workers perished in an accidental fire while they were modifying Launch Complex 373-4. The second occurred on September 19, 1980, when an explosion destroyed the missile at Launch Complex 374-7 near Southside in Van Buren County.

Nuclear warheads mistakenly flown over U.S. heartland / Air Force probes how B-52 crew was unaware its missiles were live for 1,100-mile trip

NEW YORK - A B-52 bomber mistakenly armed with live nuclear missiles flew straight across the heartland where millions of Americans live - and the crew had no clue what they were carrying.
An Air Force spokesman insisted "there was never a danger to the American public" and called the missile mishap last Thursday an "isolated incident."
"Air Force standards are very exacting when it comes to munitions handling," Lt. Col. Ed Thomas said. "The weapons were always in our custody."
The B-52 was loaded with cruise missiles carrying nuclear warheads ranging from 5 to 150 kilotons in destructive force, mounted onto pylons on the bomber's wings, according to the Military Times newspaper, which broke the story.
"You can wipe out a good-sized city with a 5-kiloton blast," said Jim Riccio, a nuclear policy analyst for Greenpeace. "A 150-kiloton warhead is 10 times the size of what they dropped on Hiroshima."

This article leads me to believe that Ballmer isn't the jolly, diplomatic leader that I assume his image consultants want him to be.
Excerpt:
The details about Ballmer were in a declaration by former Distinguished Engineer Marc Lucovsky, who in November 2004 told Ballmer he was leaving for Google. Lucovsky said Ballmer threw a chair across his office and cussed out Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt, saying, "I'm going to ... bury that guy, I have done it before, and I will do it again. I'm going ... to kill Google."

Engineer guilty in plot to give China U.S. data
By GILLIAN FLACCUS
The Associated Press
SANTA ANA, Calif. — Jurors convicted a Chinese-born engineer Thursday of conspiring to export U.S. defense technology to China, including data on an electronic-propulsion system that could make submarines virtually undetectable.
Chi Mak also was found guilty of acting as an unregistered foreign agent, attempting to violate export control laws and making false statements to the FBI.
Mak faces up to 45 years in prison when he is sentenced Sept. 10, Assistant U.S. Attorney Greg Staples said.
The government accused Mak, a naturalized U.S. citizen, of taking thousands of pages of documents from his defense-contractor employer, Power Paragon of Anaheim, and giving them to his brother, who passed them along to Chinese authorities over a number of years.
Mak, 66, was arrested in 2005 in Los Angeles after FBI agents stopped his brother and sister-in-law as they boarded a flight to Hong Kong. Investigators said they found three encrypted CDs in their luggage that contained documents on a submarine propulsion system, a solid-state power switch for ships and a presentation on the future of power electronics.
Chi Mak's wife, brother and other relatives also have been indicted and are to go on trial together June 5.

Show trial
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term show trial is a pejorative description of a type of highly public trial in which there is a strong connotation that the judicial authorities have already determined the guilt of the defendant. The actual trial has as its only goal to present the accusation and the verdict to the public as an impressive example and as a warning. Show trials tend to be retributive rather than correctional justice.
Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc show trials
Moscow Trials
Show trials were a significant part of Joseph Stalin's regime. The Moscow Trials of the Great Purge period (1937-38) in the Soviet Union are characteristic.
The authorities staged the actual trials meticulously. If defendants refused to "cooperate", i.e., to admit guilt for their alleged and mostly fabricated crimes, they did not go on public trial, but suffered execution nonetheless. This happened, for example during the prosecution of the so-called "Labour Peasant Party", a party invented by NKVD, which, in particular, assigned the notable economist Alexander Chayanov to it.
Some solid public evidence of what really happened during the Moscow Trials came to the West through the Dewey Commission. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, more information became available. This discredited Walter Duranty, who claimed that these trials were actually fair.
Eastern Bloc party show trials
Main article: Eastern Bloc politics
Following some dissent within ruling communist parties throughout the Eastern Bloc, especially after the 1948 Tito-Stalin split, several party purges occurred, with several hundred thousand members purged in several countries. In addition to rank-and-file member purges, prominent communists were purged, with some subjected to public show trials. These were more likely to be instigated, and sometimes orchestrated, by the Kremlin or even Stalin himself, as he had done in the earlier Moscow Trials.

Published: November 12, 2000
AT the very moment Hillary Rodham Clinton has shattered the mold of First Lady by winning a Senate seat, she is also celebrating the traditional side of her life for the last eight years, as chatelaine of the Executive Mansion.
In ''An Invitation to the White House,'' published by Simon & Schuster to commemorate the 200th year of the presidential residence and office, she makes a case that a policy wonk can also pour her energies into the entertaining and ''cookie baking'' side of being First Lady.
An advance copy of the book, which will go on sale on Tuesday, was given to The New York Times

Key U.S. Kremlinologist during Cold War
July 21, 2008|Patricia Sullivan | Washington Post
Regional Soviet newspapers in 1980 were reporting an unusually large number of deaths of rocket scientists, and the obituaries were running a bit later than usual.
Donald Graves, who collected facts and data about the Soviet Union with a zeal matched by few others in the United States government, noticed the reports and suspected something was up. Several high-level officials who had an interest in Soviet space matters had also recently died, but the dates and places of the deaths had been obfuscated.
Putting bits of information together, Graves soon realized the scientists and officials had died simultaneously, probably in an accident at the Plesetsk launch site. Graves, widely considered one of the best American Kremlinologists of the era, wrote and circulated a memo about his findings to his State Department superiors and other high-ranking U.S. officials. The official Soviet news media said nothing.
The rest of the world learned nine years later that more than 50 people had been killed when a Vostok rocket exploded during fueling at Plesetsk, the world's largest space facility, on March 18, 1980.
It might be hard to imagine in this age of instant information retrieval, satellite-enhanced eavesdropping and easy duplication of documents how difficult it used to be to collect verifiable facts about the Soviet Union.
The Post article, "The Secret Files of Mr. X," was remarkable not only for exposing previous secrets but because Graves disliked talking to newspaper reporters.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
TOP TEN "MOST ASKED" QUESTIONS ABOUT A CAMP-IN.
10. WHAT IS SPACE CENTER HOUSTON?
Formed as a 501(c)3 not-for-profit Texas corporation on July 21, 1986, the Manned Space Flight Education Foundation, Inc. financed, constructed, and now operates Space Center Houston, the public visitors center for NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. Tax money does not support the operation of Space Center Houston.
Space Center Houston opened its doors on October 16, 1992, as the public's window to the world's most exciting scientific initiative... the American Space program.

HOUSTON CHRONICLE
THIS is a message to the individuals, corporations and foundations who donated the $5.1 million start-up money for Space Center Houston.
Your money was well spent.
A recent tour of the center, which opens Oct. 16, reveals that it's met all three of its objectives.
The first one is that it should generate enough visitors to pay off the $68.4 million in bonds sold to finance the rest of the cost of the new visitor center at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Clear Lake -- while at the same time providing 350 full and part-time jobs.
The non-profit center estimates it will lure in 2 million visitors the first year of operation. That's double the number who annually toured the old visitor center at the facility where all U.S. astronauts are trained and all space missions are controlled.
But achieving that increase really shouldn't be difficult. If you've ever looked at the old visitors center, you know what I mean. I spent many an hour in the place -- it subbed as the newsroom during space shots. It has all the verve of a high school science project.
Not that the new Space Center is Disneyland, even though it was designed by Walt Disney Imagineering and has a general manager late of the Disney organization, Vance R. Ablott.
A trip for the mind
The nearest thing to a thrilling ride is a chair that lets its participant approximate maneuvering in zero-gravity situations. But since there's just one chair, and thousands of visitors expected each day, it's an experience few will feel.
There is another attraction called the Feel of Space where 24 superior video games will allow visitors to try their hand at things such as landing the space shuttle.

"John, we may have a problem," the former FBI agent announced.
"What problem?" Carol asked. Henriksen explained and the mood in the room changed abruptly. "You mean, they might know?…Henriksen nodded. "That is possible, yes."
"My God," the Presidential Science Advisor exclaimed. If they know that, then-then-then-"
"Yeah." Bill nodded. "Then we're fucked."
"What can we do about this?"
"For starters, we destroy all the evidence. All the Shiva, all the vaccines, all the records. It's all on computer, so we just erase it. There shouldn't be much in the way of a paper trail, because we told people not to print anything up, and to destroy any paper notes they might make. We can do that from here. I can access all the company computers from my office and kill off all the records"
"They're encrypted, all of them," John Brightling pointed out.
"You want to bet against the code-breakers at Fort Meade? I don't," Henriksen told them. "No, those files all have to go, John. Look, you beat a criminal prosecution by denying evidence to the prosecutors. Without physical evidence, they can't hurt you."
"What about witnesses?"
"The most overrated thing in the world is an eyewitness. Any lawyer with half a brain can make fools out of them. No, when I was working cases for the Bureau, I wanted something I could hold in my hand, something you could pass over to the jury so they could see it and feel it. Eyewitness testimony is pretty useless in court, despite what you see on TV. Okay, I'm going to my office to get rid of the computer stuff." Henriksen left at once, leaving the two Brightlings behind him.
"My God, John," Carol said in quiet alarm, "what if people find out, nobody'll understand…"
"Understand that we were going to kill them and their families? No," her husband agreed dryly, "I don't think Joe Sixpack and Archie Bunker will understand that very well."

Chapter 17
This advance of the enemy had seemed to the youth like a ruthless hunting. He began to fume with rage and exasperation. He beat his foot upon the ground, and scowled with hate at the swirling smoke that was approaching like a phantom flood. There was a maddening quality in this seeming resolution of the foe to give him no rest, to give him no time to sit down and think. Yesterday he had fought and had fled rapidly. There had been many adventures. For to-day he felt that he had earned opportunities for contemplative repose. He could have enjoyed portraying to uninitiated listeners various scenes at which he had been a witness or ably discussing the processes of war with other proved men. Too it was important that he should have time for physical recuperation. He was sore and stiff from his experiences. He had received his fill of all exertions, and he wished to rest.
But those other men seemed never to grow weary; they were fighting with their old speed. He had a wild hate for the relentless foe. Yesterday, when he had imagined the universe to be against him, he had hated it, little gods and big gods; to-day he hated the army of the foe with the same great hatred. He was not going to be badgered of his life, like a kitten chased by boys, he said. It was not well to drive men into final corners; at those moments they could all develop teeth and claws.
He leaned and spoke into his friend's ear. He menaced the woods with a gesture. "If they keep on chasing us, by Gawd, they'd better watch out. Can't stand TOO much."
The friend twisted his head and made a calm reply. "If they keep on a-chasin' us they'll drive us all inteh th' river."
The youth cried out savagely at this statement. He crouched behind a little tree, with his eyes burning hatefully and his teeth set in a curlike snarl. The awkward bandage was still about his head, and upon it, over his wound, there was a spot of dry blood. His hair was wondrously tousled, and some straggling, moving locks hung over the cloth of the bandage down toward his forehead. His jacket and shirt were open at the throat, and exposed his young bronzed neck. There could be seen spasmodic gulpings at his throat.
His fingers twined nervously about his rifle. He wished that it was an engine of annihilating power. He felt that he and his companions were being taunted and derided from sincere convictions that they were poor and puny. His knowledge of his inability to take vengeance for it made his rage into a dark and stormy specter, that possessed him and made him dream of abominable cruelties. The tormentors were flies sucking insolently at his blood, and he thought that he would have given his life for a revenge of seeing their faces in pitiful plights.
