And this reminds me of something I have wanted to write about for a while but have not. Back in my memory of Kerry Burgess's life, in high school, there were four of us that congregated together through 3 years of Laron Smith's science classes. The first year was Biology, then Chemistry, then Physics. There was Lesa Jewell, Felecia Simpson, Mike Thornburg, and me. Mike's nickname was "Cornbread". I don't know where he got that nickname, he had it before I knew him. I wrote about mike earlier as he went on to become an aircraft mechanic in the Air Force. Lesa and Felecia always sat together and Mike and I sat together until the 3rd year when I decided to sit with Angela Gilke

Now I understand why Microsoft created that area at the entrance I walked through every day to work. They called it "Mission Control." To my right as I was walking out of the building, they had a large photo of three enlisted U.S. Navy sailors saluting. I saw that same photo on the classmates.com website. One day, I became convinced they even had a hidden camera in my Jeep. One clue was something Vince Maraia kept asking me about the dashboard.

I remember that on 01 February 2002 I got into the Microsoft office building and went to my cubicle to start my work day and I told Vince what had happened a short while earlier.

Vince was the physics graduate Microsoft seated me next to after that moved all of us out to Issaquah Washington to a new set of office buildings. The world-famous Microsoft campus in Redmond is on the north end of Lake Sammamish and those new office buildings they moved us to are at the other end.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Assistant Chief Orville Thiele, a husky, red-haired 25-year veteran of the Sioux City Fire Department, was at the console Wednesday afternoon when the Woodbury County communications center radioed that a crippled DC-10 airliner was about to crash-land.

Thiele was stunned, but not unprepared. The area's fire-and-rescue operations had confronted almost precisely such a problem in an exercise in 1987, and - by lucky coincidence - the emergency services had drilled just two weeks ago.

"We were all pretty well prepared," said Patti Bauerly, Thiele's administrative assistant.

As it turned out, they needed everything they could muster. Two minutes later, the communications center radioed again: This time the center reported that the airliner had lost hydraulic pressure, which meant the pilot could not use the ailerons, landing flaps and brakes to control the plane.

"All he could do was turn right," Bauerly said - "and hope."

Robert White, a Sioux City police official, said ordinarily crashes come without warning. The plane catches fire, or is thrown askew by a wind-shear, and hits the ground instantly. By the time the fire-and-rescue crews arrive, precious time has been lost.

But this time, authorities had about 45 minutes' notice from the pilot before Flight 232 erupted in a ball of fire at Sioux Gateway Airport.

"We had time to coordinate, get a command center set up, start blocking off traffic," White said. White, Bauerly and almost everyone else who could get to a telephone began calling in off-duty fire and police personnel.

By the time the DC-10 reached the Sioux City area, officials had assembled 35 fire engines, ambulances, rescue units, and police cars, some from 30 miles away. Two hundred police and rescue workers eventually mustered on the field.

The airliner came in from the east and - obviously with severe difficulty - maneuvered into position to use the southwest runway, which usually remains unused. The airport, a base for B-29 Flying Fortresses during World War II, has the longest runway in the area.

Maj. Richard Sorenson, a pilot with the Iowa Air National Guard, had just landed his own A-7 single-seat jet fighter and was taxiing toward the hangar when he got a warning from the airport control tower to clear the runway for the jetliner.

In Sorenson's words: "Shortly before touchdown, about the time an airplane would begin to flare, the right wing began to dip and roll, and the nose began to fall. It was very apparent at that moment he could not make a safe landing.

"The only real question was how disastrous the impact would be. There was a huge fireball, black smoke. The plane began disintegrating, huge pieces began cartwheeling from the airplane. There were a lot of things falling off the plane.

Maneuver used in Iowa crash not considered worth teaching

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Airlines shouldn't bother teaching pilots how to fly DC-10s without hydraulic aid the way pilot Al Haynes flew United Flight 232, an aviation expert says.

In July, Haynes and his crew improvised a way to control their stricken DC-10 after an explosion on the plane's tail-mounted engine robbed them of hydraulics used to operate wing flaps and other crucial flight controls.

Haynes steered the plane by alternately increasing and decreasing power to its remaining wing engines, bringing the plane down at Sioux Gateway Airport with the loss of 112 lives.

But 184 survived, prompting the plane's maker, McDonnell Douglas, and United to consider adding the technique to regular pilot training.

McDonnell Douglas test engineer Phillip Battaglia has told the National Transportation Safety Board to forget it.

"It's my opinion, and the consensus of opinion of everyone involved, that this is not a trainable maneuver," Battaglia said.

The NTSB held four days of hearings on the July 19 crash.

Battaglia led a team of engineers who programmed the flight characteristics of the stricken jumbo jet into a flight simulator. Tests run in Dallas and in Denver using United flight crews on the simulators found that there were no successful landings in 30 attempts.

Even when the pilots made it to the runway, they were unable to maintain enough control to make a landing without destroying the plane.

The pilots had better luck when trying to land on a simulated dry lake bed or flat field where they had more room to adjust to the constant pitch and roll of the aircraft, Battaglia said.

Battaglia said pilots in similar situations might consider landing away from airports, trading the possibility of a better landing for the promise of waiting crash-fire units.

But regardless of landing site, a smooth, normal landing was impossible, he said.

"The chances of that happening are as unlikely as the chances of this accident ever happening again," Battaglia said.

'Miracle' flight crew: Teamwork saved lives

Survivors called it a "miracle." The Seattle-based flight crew calls it "teamwork." And 20 years after they guided United Flight 232 onto a cornfield in Iowa, saving more than half the passengers, they're still not quite sure how they managed to do it.

When the crew declared an emergency and was directed to land in Sioux City, Iowa, many thought all 296 souls on board would be lost.

When the aircraft's right wing tipped down and it broke apart careening in a fireball across the runway and into a cornfield, many were sure all aboard would die.


But they all remember that day - July 19, 1989 - very clearly.

A federal judge in California on Thursday reduced a $475 million damage award to former exotic dancer Anna Nicole Smith to $88.6 million in the case involving the estate of her husband, Houston oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II.

U.S. District Judge David O. Carter's ruling included harsh words for Smith and her late husband, saying she essentially married him for his money and he acted unethically in avoiding income taxes.

Carter said Smith, a former Playboy Playmate, is entitled to $44.3 million in each of punitive and compensatory damages against Marshall's son, E. Pierce Marshall.


Carter held a hearing from Dec. 11 to Jan. 8 on Pierce Marshall's appeal of U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Samuel Bufford's awarding Smith $475 million in December 2000.


Carter's written order, which referred to Smith as "Vickie," said her husband avoided paying income tax on millions of dollars of purchases "by writing off as business expenses the gifts to his paramours," including Smith and another stripper, who Marshall claimed were "consultants."


With Houstonian Rusty Hardin as one of Marshall's lead attorneys, a Houston probate court last year granted nothing to Smith.

Neither Marshall nor Hardin was present at Thursday's ruling, said Marshall spokesman David Margulies.

"But apparently 12 Texans were a lot more perceptive about Anna Nicole than one federal judge," Margulies said.

Downed U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers underwent extensive interrogation at the hands of the Soviets. His instructions from the CIA on what to do in event of capture were meager, and he had been told that he might as well tell the Soviets whatever they wanted to know because they could get the information from his aircraft anyway Nevertheless, Powers tried to conceal as much classified information as possible while giving the appearance of cooperating with his captors. I just realized that the Jeep Grand Cherokee I used to have could represent the space shuttle. Something about that lift gate on the back makes me think about the cargo hold on the shuttle. And that J.G.C. was white too. Could 1995 be the first time I was the commander of a shuttle mission?

On Tuesday, June 27, 1995, 7 p.m. CDT, STS-71 MCC Status Report # 01 reports:

Atlantis first achieved an orbit with a high point of 158 nautical miles by 85 nautical miles, the lowest orbital altitude ever flown by a Space Shuttle, allowing the spacecraft to close the more than 7,000 nautical miles to Mir rapidly at first, at a rate of about 880 nautical miles per orbit. Three hours and thirty-nine minutes after launch, Atlantis fired both Orbital Maneuvering System engines for a little over two minutes to raise its orbit to an altitude of 210 nautical miles by 158 nautical miles, an engine firing called the NC-1 burn that has now slowed Atlantis' closing rate on the Mir.

The shuttle is now about 5,400 nautical miles from Mir, closing on the station by about 280 nautical miles with each one and a half-hour orbit of Earth. The next engine firing by Atlantis was not scheduled until early Wednesday morning, and all activities remain on target for a docking with Mir at about 8 a.m. Thursday.

I can't remember now all the details in the dream, but I had a very clear and detailed dream a few hours ago where I was wearing a NASA astronaut flight suit. I remember thinking about details of that flight suit. It was orange and I remember thinking that it was similar to a standard U.S. Navy flight suit but the astronaut flight suit had the metal collar on it for the pressurized helmet. There were other details I can't quite articulate now. I can still visualize myself wearing that flight suit and I was walking through the streets in a city but I don't recognize where I was. I can vaguely remember seeing some other people there. I don't recognize the city but it reminds me of walking through the streets of Seattle. There might be other details that I have forgotten.

Actress Winona Ryder was charged Friday with four felony counts for allegedly shoplifting about $4,760 in merchandise from a Beverly Hills department store and possessing a controlled substance in December, prosecutors said.

Ryder, 30, faces one count each of second-degree commercial burglary, grand theft of personal property, vandalism with more than $400 damage and possession of Oxycodone, a controlled substance, according to court papers filed Friday by the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

She is free on $20,000 bail, but prosecutors have recommended an increase to $30,000. If she is convicted, she could face a sentence of three years and eight months in state prison.

Ryder's defense attorney, Mark Geragos, said that he was not surprised charges were filed, but that he believed their severity was "out of whack."

Geragos said his client had prescriptions for the drugs she was carrying and had receipts for the merchandise. She maintains her innocence, he said.

''The idea that they charged her with four felonies is mind-boggling,'' he said. ''I believe we're going to prevail.''

Ryder's publicist, Mara Buxbaum, issued a statement on her behalf:

"We are shocked at what appear to be grossly exaggerated charges," the statement said. "We look forward to the opportunity to explain and resolve these allegations."

District attorney's spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said the reason for the charges was simple: "We had the evidence."

First day of trading is a relief for biotech ZymoGenetics

Bottles of champagne were popping early yesterday at ZymoGenetics, but it was more out of a sense of relief than pure joy.

The Seattle biotechnology company, one of the nation's oldest, had been hoping to sell 10 million shares at $16 to $18 each in its initial public offering, but it ultimately had to cut the price to $12 because of a lack of demand from investors.

It ended up gauging investor sentiment about right. After some morning dips, trading closed the first day up a nickel at $12.05. That means ZymoGenetics now has a market value of about $547 million, ranking it behind Immunex, Icos and Cell Therapeutics as Seattle's most valuable biotech companies.

ZymoGenetics raised $120 million and gets to keep $111.6 million after paying its underwriters.

Despite the shortfall, Chief Executive Bruce Carter said it is enough money to feed ZymoGenetics' ambitious goals of getting its first drug into human testing and building a manufacturing plant for clinical trials in Seattle.

Carter said he was all smiles when he saw the ZymoGenetics logo plastered on the Nasdaq's electronic billboard in New York's Times Square yesterday morning

Daniel Pearl


(born Oct. 10, 1963, Princeton, N.J.—died late January? 2002, Pakistan), American journalist who , went to work for The Wall Street Journal in 1990 and by 2000 had become the paper’s South Asia bureau chief. On Jan. 23, 2002, thinking he was being taken to interview a radical Islamic leader, he was kidnapped in Karachi, and four days later an e-mailed photograph of him in chains and with a gun to his head was released. His death was confirmed on February 21 after a videotape showing his execution was received by American officials.
