Sanity was statistical

From the moment when he was inside the Ministry of Love -- and yes, even during those minutes when he and Julia had stood helpless while the iron voice from the telescreen told them what to do -- he had grasped the frivolity, the shallowness of his attempt to set himself up against the power of the Party. There is a part in that excerpt from 1984 that really hits close to home. It is the part "Sanity was statistical." I heard that very same thing when I was in the VA. Fortunately, it wasn't from a doctor though. What I heard someone say, when I was reasserting my belief that all this is indeed a conspiracy, was that they are treating me on the probability that what I am saying is not true. So that also reinforced my theory that if you are in the mental health system, is it assumed mental health problems are causing your problems as opposed to external environmental factors causing the problems. However, I did see indications they were listening to me and that they thought what I was saying made sense. I have no complaints about my treatment at the VA.

But as I have learned from this infuriating chapter of my life, there are problems that produce mental health issues and there are mental health issues that produce problems.

If they treated 100 people for the problems I am describing, it is probable that 99 of them would be delusional. But my argument has been that I am that one person that is not delusional. Sure, I am feeling paranoid, but it is a healthy paranoia. It is a normal reaction to a threat in my environment. How many more years am I going to have to live thinking no one understands?

Gone in a blur

It began with a few reports of large, rough men from Yorkshire in a smart new Mercedes. They were touring the parts of our fair town where young Asian lads hang out. The football / cricket / all weather pitch, the arcade, the snooker hall.

Now then son, ‘bowt this missing lass…?

These men were asking questions, flashing cash if cash would work and flashing a little muscle if it didn’t. They had a picture of an Asian girl, early 20's, traditional dress. The guys from Yorkshire were Bounty Hunters. Ex rugby league players, bouncers hired to seek and return the runaway daughter of some Asian Yorkshire businessman. Somehow, somewhere, they had heard that she was in my town.

I later learned this team had brought her back home before. First time Daddy beat her a bit, second time Daddy beat her a lot, stoved her ribs in, put her in hospital. It was all for her own good. Daddy sees only two possibilities for his daughter; live the cultural life as decided by him or become a crack whore. No father wants his daughter to be a crack whore. Daddy absolutely positively 100% believes he is doing his paternal duty. Next time Dad brings her back it’ll be Diazepam and a jet plane to the sub-continent.

Next report that comes in to us is about the unfortunate lad who has been sold out by his “mates” as knowing where the missing daughter might be. He doesn’t know, he just chatted with her earlier in the day but as I understand it, he had a hard time selling that to the Dog wannabees.

“Where is t’ lass stoppin’ son?”

“I don’t know where innit”

etc etc. No, he never did make a complaint and I can’t say I blame him.

We found her first and quietly shipped her on. She is still out there I believe, an incident comet, appearing in your skies and portending doom. Her tail is grim men in leather jackets leaving blood bruises and the odd tenner in their wake. My Sarge spoke to the posse and told them that there was nothing for them anymore. I spoke to Daddy on the phone. I have not looked into his eyes but I believed everything he said. He will never give up. He will do whatever it takes up to and including killing to save his daughter from herself.

Afterwards I get to wondering whether this multiculturalism idea that we are trying is ever going to work and I conclude that it won’t which is sad

Little Hope Held For Men Trapped In Flaming Mine

Seventy-eight miners were entombed by an explosion early yesterday morning in Farmington No. 9 mine of Mountaineer Coal Co. and hope for their lives all but vanished last night when raging fires prevented the start of rescue operations.

Rolling smoke, lightened by flames that last night shot 150 feet into the air, poured from the Llewellyn Run and Mod's Run portals of the ill-fated mine, while noxious gases filled the workings and threatened to add to the four explosions which rocked the mine starting at 5:25 a.m. and continued until 10 p.m.

Twenty-one of the 99 men who went to work on the "cateye shift" at midnight Tuesday made their way to safety. Five were undergoing hospital treatment for smoke inhalation and injuries caused by concussion.

No communication has been established between the rescue command posts on the surface and the men underground. Six production crews of six men each were known to have been working on sections between the Llewellyn and Mod's Run portals, and they were given scant chance of surviving the explosive forces which wrecked both facilities.

Not until nearly 10 p.m. was a list of the entombed miners made available by coal company officials. Personnel records were kept in the office at the Llewellyn portal and could not be reached because of the fire, smoke and wreckage at the facility, four miles west of Mannington, which was opened less than two years ago. Other records in Mountaineer headquarters were searched during the day, and a personal check on each miner carried on the rolls of the midnight shift was made.

Gov. Hulett C. Smith headed a host of top-level visitors to the stricken community. Also on hand were executives of Consolidation Coal Co., Mountaineer's parent firm, and ranking officials of the West Virginia Department of Mines, the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and the United Mine Workers of America.
