After months of swimming and treading water in an ocean of despair, I have washed ashore. I am lost on an island, the Fantasy Island. "It's duh plane, Boss, duht net plane!" I am being forced to live out a fantasy of a suspect. It is quite the experience being a suspicious person walking around normal people as they go about their unknown existence, in my eyes looking like people that will probably go home somewhere, maybe even celebrating christmas, or some other peaceful activity, unalone.

In regard to his companions his mind wavered between two opinions, according to his mood. Sometimes he inclined to believing them all heroes. In fact, he usually admired in secret the superior development of the higher qualities in others. He could conceive of men going very insignificantly about the world bearing a load of courage unseen, and although he had known many of his comrades through boyhood, he began to fear that his judgment of them had been blind. Then, in other moments, he flouted these theories, and assured him that his fellows were all privately wondering and quaking.

His emotions made him feel strange in the presence of men who talked excitedly of a prospective battle as of a drama they were about to witness, with nothing but eagerness and curiosity apparent in their faces. It was often that he suspected them to be liars.

He did not pass such thoughts without severe condemnation of himself. He dinned reproaches at times. He was convicted by himself of many shameful crimes against the gods of traditions.

In his great anxiety his heart was continually clamoring at what he considered the intolerable slowness of the generals. They seemed content to perch tranquilly on the river bank, and leave him bowed down by the weight of a great problem. He wanted it settled forthwith. He could not long bear such a load, he said. Sometimes his anger at the commanders reached an acute stage, and he grumbled about the camp like a veteran.

After I decrypted this morning another message that I picked instinctively (and without influence by the activity of the date and only because I wondered about the 1955 title) on my offline computer I have to wonder what is even the point of getting up from bed any morning between now and the fabled D-Day.

My future seems quite clear at this point.

All I have to do is to show up at the right time.

Nothing else I do at this point matters.

I think I might send you that message as well sometime later. Now I really don't see any point to any of this.

The precise date of D-Day is probably encoded in that message but I don't have any way of knowing that.

Conscientious objector Dan and student Sarah leave Berkeley for life in San Marino County, away from the horrors of city life. Moving to a sheep farm, the couple anticipates the birth of their first child as they enjoy the countryside. Dan had been a medical student, so they plan on natural childbirth. Their pleasure in pastoral life is ruined when her father, Jeffries, who has been a sailor away at sea for years, shows up to visit. Dan becomes jealous as he listens to them talk about their family and the past. Jeffries also taunts Dan for being a pacifist. At first amused by their escape back to nature, Jeffries is shocked when he learns that the two lovers are not married. Alger Hiss, the most celebrated symbol of treason in American history since Benedict Arnold, came out of prison yesterday.

Greyer and a little weightier at 50 years of age, he stood for a moment at the gates of the Federal penitentiary at Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, and waved back at the barred windows. It was nine in the morning and the mist was still puffing along the Pennsylvania valleys. But the sun was out and so was a bristling mob of seventy-odd newsmen and press and newsreel photographers. They converged on the car of his two lawyers as he walked briskly towards it on the arm of his wife, with his thirteen-year-old son bobbing along behind. Hiss had expected this reception and welcomed it. He had no notes. He put on a confident smile and began, where he left off at his sentencing in January, 1950, to declare again his innocence. He said:

"This is not a press conference, though it looks very much like one. I am very glad to use this chance, the first I have had in nearly four years, to reassert my complete innocence of the charges that were brought against me by Whittaker Chambers and to answer the inventions that have been circulated about me. I have only one other thing I would like to say at this time. That is that I plan to renew my efforts to dispel the deception that has been foisted upon the American people. I shall renew those efforts with more enthusiasm because I am confident that the success not only will vindicate my name and relieve my family of harassment, but will assist in the allaying of the hysteria and fear of these days."

He nodded and smiled and greeted a newspaper veteran of his trials. Then the family and the lawyers got in the car and drove east to New York, where they arrived in the late afternoon. Another bivouac of newsmen and photographers was waiting outside the modest house on East Eighth Street where the Hisses have a small apartment. He had nothing to add to his morning statement, which was already in print under flaring headlines in the afternoon papers. He paused only long enough to grin again, with his head up and say: "This is my Thanksgiving."
Then the door closed on him and he was back again in the place from which, on a stewing August morning of 1948, he went to Washington to deny his accuser and any knowledge of his story, before the House Committee on Un-American Activities.

At his first trial for perjury in 1949 the jury would not agree that eleven years before he had been guilty of turning over secret State Department documents to his accuser, Whittaker Chambers, then an active worker in the Communist underground. In the second trial he was found guilty, not of the act (which the Statute of Limitations put beyond the reach of prosecution), but of denying it to a grand jury in December, 1948. Good behaviour has saved Hiss sixteen months of his five-year sentence but until the full sentence is technically served he must report periodically to a probation officer in New York. He cannot leave New York without permission. He has been debarred as a lawyer from both the Federal and state courts. He may never vote, work for the Government, serve on a jury or receive a passport for travel abroad. To all intents he is otherwise a free man.

The conviction of Hiss galvanised the country into a bitter realisation of the native, and even well-bred, American types who might be dedicated to betrayal from within.

§ 3005. Counsel and witnesses in capital cases

Whoever is indicted for treason or other capital crime shall be allowed to make his full defense by counsel; and the court before which the defendant is to be tried, or a judge thereof, shall promptly, upon the defendant’s request, assign 2 such counsel, of whom at least 1 shall be learned in the law applicable to capital cases, and who shall have free access to the accused at all reasonable hours. In assigning counsel under this section, the court shall consider the recommendation of the Federal Public Defender organization, or, if no such organization exists in the district, of the Administrative Office of the United States Courts. The defendant shall be allowed, in his defense to make any proof that he can produce by lawful witnesses, and shall have the like process of the court to compel his witnesses to appear at his trial, as is usually granted to compel witnesses to appear on behalf of the prosecution.

LUFKIN - Finding the piece of debris that might give clues to why the space shuttle Columbia broke apart on re-entry has been described by one NASA official as like "looking for a needle in a haystack."

Monday, the haystack got bigger.

While lawmen and volunteers in several East Texas counties were beating the piney woods and lake shores for more remnants of Columbia, the size of the "debris field" was enlarged to take in a portion of West Texas and a longer stretch of Louisiana.

Authorities did report a major find Monday. A man found the shuttle's nose cone buried about six feet in the ground on his land just outside the town of Hemphill. The cone was said to be in good shape and searchers planned to excavate it today.

Most of the significant debris and body parts apparently have been found between Nacogdoches and the Sabine River, but some fragments may be found as far east as the New Orleans suburbs and west of the point over Dallas-Fort Worth where the shuttle began to disintegrate.
