Pluto Loses Planet Status

August 24, 2006 -- The International Astronomical Union has stripped Pluto of its planetary status. Pluto was discovered in 1930 by American astronomer Clyde Tombaugh of Arizona's Lowell Observatory and classified as a planet. In 2003, Pluto’s standing was called into question when astronomers found a larger object, UB313, in the Kuiper Belt, an area beyond Neptune filled with large icy objects and believed to be the source of many comets.

Approximately 2,500 experts at the IAU’s general assembly voted to change Pluto’s status, rejecting a proposal that would have retained Pluto as a planet and brought three other objects into the planetary club. Pluto is considerably smaller and more distant than the other planets in our solar system. Two-thirds the size of Earth's moon, Pluto's classification as a planet came under scrutiny when many objects of similar size and distance were discovered in the Kuiper Belt in the 1990s.

Q&A: Pluto's planetary demotion

Pluto has lost its classification as a planet.

The distant world discovered in 1930 by the American Clyde Tombaugh will be given a secondary status - that of "dwarf planet".

Who made this decision?

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) General Assembly. It has been meeting in the Czech capital, Prague. The IAU is the official nomenclature body for astronomy. The IAU is responsible for naming stars, asteroids and other celestial bodies.

Why was it felt necessary to reclassify Pluto?

A sizeable group of astronomers has been unhappy with Pluto's status for many years. These scientists feel the object's small size and its highly elliptical and tilted orbit set it apart from the other eight planets. They have long campaigned for Pluto's relegation and managed to carry a vote to that effect in Prague.

Why has this debate come to a head now?


How many planets are there now?

Before Thursday, we had nine. Now, the number of planets is eight: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

What happens to Pluto now?

Pluto goes into a new dwarf-planet category.


Is this the end of the matter?

Unlikely. The Principal Investigator on Nasa's $700m New Horizons mission to Pluto has lambasted the decision to demote Pluto. Alan Stern told BBC News the decision was "embarrassing" and the criteria amounted to "sloppy science". He said that if the clear orbit criterion was strictly applied then even Earth should lose its status because its path is crossed by thousands of small rocks.

Dr Stern said like-minded astronomers would try to get Pluto reinstated.

That was Lily Jang I saw in that dream, the local Fox News television news personality that I made world famous in my blog.

I saw her put her hand on the upper left side of my chest and I knew there was something wrong there with the physical structure underneath my skin.

She also told me her height, so that’s how those clowns know the difference between Thomas Reagan and me. He is virtually identical to me but he is 6.5 years older than I am and she is over six feet tall while the tallest I ever recall measuring out was five foot eleven inches. One theory is that he endured space travel for a great number of days in his early physical youth and then his late teenage years where he was in deep space for almost 1.5 years that he became taller than he would have been naturally.

So anyway, that’s how they know the difference between us. If no one knew those details then we could easily walk around posing as the other one and no one would know the difference, especially among people who never knew either of us very well and that had not seen either one of us in a long time.

After all this time I do still recall what she said to me in that dream long ago.





What I note here is perhaps not from that same dream. But that might have been the same dream with the "endearing quality." I am not certain now today thinking again about for the first time in a long time if that was the same dream I write of now. The dream I am thinking of now is that she placed her hand on one side of my chest and that dream happened sometime around that time in 2006 when I was having that series of dreams. The notion of her hand on my chest was something I thought of but I didn't try to think about it too much. The notion was not strong but now I think again tonight that I was left with the vague sense that something was different about my chest where she placed her hand. That was Lily Jang I was dreaming of that placed her hand on the side of my chest and at some point, a point in the dream, which I do not now recall, or sometime later, I became aware that something was wrong with my chest. But I had known that for a long time before the year 2006.
