"We know that, Colonel," the Chancellor replied testily. He'd been awake for two days straight now, trying to come to grips with the sudden German-Russian crisis.

"Herr Kanzler, the man we now have in the hospital is Major Andre Ilych Chernyavin. He entered the country over the Czech border two weeks ago with a separate set of false papers. He is an officer in the Soviet Spetznaz forces, their elite Sturmtruppen. He was badly injured in an auto accident - the fool stepped right in front of an automobile without looking - and was carrying a complete diagram for the NATO communications base at Lammersdorf. The station's security posts were just relocated a month ago. This document is only two weeks old. He also has the watch schedule and a roster of watch officers - and that is only three days old! He and a team of ten men came over the Czech border, and only just got their operational orders. His current orders are to attack the base exactly at midnight, the day after receipt of his alert signal. There is also a cancellation signal should plans change. We have them both."

"He came into Germany long before -" The Chancellor was surprised in spite of himself. The entire affair was so unreal.

"Exactly. It all fits, Herr Kanzler. For whatever reason, Ivan is coming to attack Germany. Everything to this point was a sham, all designed to put us to sleep. Here is a full transcript of our interview with Chernyavin. He has knowledge of four other Spetznaz operations, all of them consistent with a full-scale assault across our borders. He is now at our military hospital in Koblenz under heavy guard. We also have a videotape of his admission."

"What of the chance that this is all some sort of Russian provocation? Why weren't these documents brought over when they crossed the border?"

"The reconstruction of the Lammersdorf installation meant that they needed correct information. As you know, we've been upgrading the security measures at our NATO communications stations since last summer, and our Russian friends must have been updating their assault plans as well. The fact that they have these documents at all - just days old, some of them - is most frightening. As for how we happened to get hold of this man -" Weber explained the circumstances of the accident. "We have every reason to believe that it was a genuine accident, not a provocation. The driver, a Madame Anne-Marie LeCourte, is a fashion agent - she sells dresses for some Paris designer or other; not a likely cover for a Soviet spy. And why do such a thing? Do they expect us to launch an attack into the DDR based on this? First they accuse of us of bombing the Kremlin, then try to provoke us? It's not logical. What we have here is a man whose mission is to prepare the way for a Soviet invasion of Germany by paralyzing NATO communication links immediately before hostilities commence."

"The Soviets are intoxicated with 'special operations' groups, a lesson learned from Afghanistan. These men are highly trained, very dangerous. And it's a cunning plan. For the moment we have their safe house under observation. We may wish to assault it. GSG-9 is ready for the mission, but perhaps it should be a NATO operation."

"I must meet with my cabinet first. Then I will speak with the President of the United States on the telephone and the other NATO chiefs of government."

"Forgive me, Chancellor, but there is no time for that. With your permission, within the hour I will give a copy of the videotape to the CIA liaison officer, and also to the British and French. The Russians are going to attack us. Better to alert the intelligence services first, which will lay the groundwork for your talk with the President and others. We must move at once, Herr Kanzler. This is a life-and-death situation."

The Chancellor stared down at his desk. "Agreed, Colonel. What do you propose to do with this Chernyavin?"

Weber had already moved on that score. "He died of injuries sustained in the auto accident. It will appear on the television news this evening, and in the newspapers. Of course he will be made available to our allies for further interrogation. I am certain the CIA and others will wish to see him before midnight."

The Chancellor of the German Federal Republic stared out the windows of his Bonn office. He remembered his armed service forty years before: a frightened teenager with a helmet that nearly covered his eyes. "It's happening again." How many will die this time?

You see, Lindsay Dawn Mackenzie hates the British royalty. That's why she has played along with her fake birthdate for so long. She reports her birth year is 1978 but is 1975. That's why the actor from the 1993 "Star Trek" has a 1975 birthdate.

My biological father, whom I don't think I have ever actually met, and that I know I had never actually met before 1989, also hates the British monarchy, his biological mother.

He resents her for sending him off to be raised by the butler, basically,

I don't know why he resents me. He certainly resented me in the year 2006. He sure as hell resents me here in the year 2013.

I wrote once before in a private email about the question I posed to myself about whether the sudden realization that my life in DeQueen Arkansas would make me also resent my biological relations to the British monarchy and I was thinking again just today that I do not resent them.

I was thinking back today to my life growing up in DeQueen and really the only things I did not like about it was things I could have changed personally. So if I resent anybody then I should resent myself.

I think back to that trailer park we lived and why should I resent anything about that? Sure, we weren't wealthy by any means but so what? Why did I deserve to live a life of luxury?

I think back to that trailer we lived in and I think about the nights I would try to sleep at night and I would hear the rats that infested that place scratching on the walls and that wasn't very pleasant. I didn't have any control over that life as an eight year old but why should I blame Thedia for that? She was working to support two kids as a single mother and I never had any reason to complain about her.

Eventually we moved into a house in DeQueen residential areas, after she and the Vietnam veteran finally divorced, the guy whose birthdate was July 20th, and that house was bug-infested and rodent-infested but it was better than that trailer.

I've had a lot of thoughts in recent months about her that really disturb me, thoughts about truths I would discover in the 1990's and that were blocked from my conscious awareness sometime later. I still am not certain about the truth and I have not written anywhere about the really bad suspicions I have.

So anyway, we moved to DeQuincy Avenue to a rental house and that is when I got some payback against the dirty rats.

Ah, that was the big change there. The new Kerry, you sons-of-bitches wall-scratching rodents. You met you match now. Now I got a BB gun.

In the back room of that house is where the garbage was stored until the trucks carried it off. At some point I discovered a hole in the floor where the rats would come up from beneath the house to go for the garbage.

I would sit there for hours and wait for the sorry little bastards to raise their heads from the hole and I would shoot them with my BB gun. After a couple times, I was dissatisfied with that approach because I would either miss or they would see me and drop back in the hole without getting shot.

I wanted to cut notches in the wood of my BB gun for confirmed kills.

So that's when I got patient. I would wait for the little bastards to crawl all the way out of the hole and onto the floor and they would get hit by a copper ball bearing projectile from my air rifle. One time, I hit one but didn't kill and it ran towards me and into the bags of trash behind me and I had kick things out of the way so I could stomp it to death as it scurried around the room trying to find an escape.

After a while I starting leaving pieces of cheese next to the hole to bait them out so I could shoot them with my BB gun. I had quite a few notches cut into the wood of the shoulder stock.

England -- Playing The Palace: Royal Open House Has Begun

LONDON - Like many of her noble subjects, Britain's Queen Elizabeth II is bowing this summer to the sometimes cruel realities of modern economics.

Over the years, most of the stately homes in Britain have admitted the paying public to help finance upkeep. The list includes parts of Windsor Castle and the Princess of Wales' ancestral estate, Althorp House.

But never - until now - has the world's most famous royal residence and headquarters of the British monarchy been opened for public tours.

For eight weeks (beginning yesterday), however, that all is changing as Buckingham Palace hosts an anticipated 450,000 visitors willing to pay an adult admission of $12 for a peek at 18 of the more than 600 rooms in the palace.

The queen's motive for inviting the public to view the sumptuous staterooms of Buckingham Palace is a variation on the one that has opened all those other stately homes: She hopes to help pay for restoration of Windsor Castle, which was badly damaged in a fire last November.

The mother of all queues

The decision is being widely applauded here as giving her subjects a chance to see their monarchical heritage up close. And the anticipated lineup for the 7,000 tickets to be sold daily is already being referred to as "the mother of all queues."

"It's going to be the No. 1 attraction," said Isabel Coy, an official with the British Tourist Authority. "It's our living heritage. The real Royal Family runs a business from there. It's only open for a limited time, so there's a sort of exclusive cachet."

The Confession

On Thursday, November 3, 1994, the ninth day since the carjacking and disappearance of the Michael and Alex Smith, their parents, Susan and David rose early to prepare themselves for interviews on three television network morning programs. Susan and David sat together holding hands on the Russells' living room sofa during their interviews. On CBS This Morning, Susan was asked if she had any involvement in her son's disappearance. Susan answered the question by saying, "I did not have anything to do with the abduction of my children." Susan added that, "Whoever did this is a sick and emotionally unstable person." Although David and Susan were legally separated, when David was asked whether he believed his wife, he replied, "Yes, I believe my wife totally."

After the interviews, Susan and David had been scheduled to sit for an interview with the Union Daily Times, but Margaret Gregory called and cancelled the interview explaining that the couple were exhausted and had enough media attention for the day.

At 12:30 p.m., Susan told her mother that she and David were going to run errands. Susan did not tell her mother that Sheriff Wells had sent for her. Susan was taken to another safe house for another interrogation.

Susan was dressed in jeans and a hooded sweatshirt and brought to her latest interrogation a newly revised statement that said the same things as her previous statement, the only change being that the name "Monarch Mills" had been changed to "Carlisle". Agent Logan asked Susan if she had anything else to add to her statement and she said no. At that point, Sheriff Wells was summoned to speak with Susan.

Susan was beginning to be worn down by the intensive and lengthy interrogations. Susan had also been facing increasingly skeptical news reporters who had started to pressure her for an explanation of Sheriff Wells' statement regarding the unspecified inconsistencies in her story.

At 1:40 p.m., Sheriff Wells and Susan met in a small room in the Family Center of the First Baptist Church, located on the same street as the Union County Courthouse. Sheriff Wells and Susan sat on folding chairs, knee to knee, facing one another and talked.

Sheriff Wells confronted Susan about her story of the carjacking. Wells told Susan that he knew that Susan's story of the black carjacker was a lie. He told her that she could not stop at the red light at the Monarch intersection if there were no other cars on the road. Wells told Susan that she had revised her statement because of this inconsistency and that even her back up story was a lie.

I haven't figured out precisely where that Sangamo manufacturing facility was in West Union South Carolina but I am thinking a lot about the H. Mac Johnston Industrial Park that is north of Union South Carolina proper. The map indicates that the Union County Printworks is located there and at the intersection of Highway 176 and Highpoint Drive. Highpoint Drive ends at Mulberry Drive and Mulberry Drive is also labeled as 'Union County Dept Prison Farm Rd.' Union County Jail is listed on the map near the end of that road.

I don't know why I would remember being at Sangamo anyway and I don't remember that name. The company seems to have ceased to exist in 1975 when it was bought by another company and that company seems to have been bought by Itron. But, as with the memory of Antlers Oklahoma, it is possible I could read 'Sangamo' on an electricity meter on that house. I also might remember it as they told me when I went to the company in Union South Carolina to fix the computer printer that they are the company that used to make the Sangamo meters. The defense begged them to look into their hearts and, through that softer focus, find a disturbed, childlike figure who, after a lifetime of sadness, snapped like a dry twig.

As simplistic as those opposing views might seem, they will be the crux of the next month of testimony in Smith's capital murder trial, which officially began Tuesday with opening statements in the elegant old Union County Courthouse.

"For nine days in the fall of 1994, Susan Smith looked this country in the eyes and lied," said Keith Giese, a special prosecutor and assistant to the state's prosecutor, Tommy Pope. "She begged God to return her children to safety, and the whole time she knew her children were lying dead at the bottom of John D. Long Lake.

"She knew right from wrong. She could control her actions if she wanted to, and she did not. This was a conscious decision to kill her children."

Smith, who has sat quietly through most of the court proceedings, started to cry.

After six weeks of intensive bombing against Iraq and its armed forces, U.S.-led coalition forces launch a ground invasion of Kuwait and Iraq.

On August 2, 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait, its tiny oil-rich neighbor, and within hours had occupied most strategic positions in the country. One week later, Operation Shield, the American defense of Saudi Arabia, began as U.S. forces massed in the Persian Gulf. Three months later, the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution authorizing the use of force against Iraq if it failed to withdraw from Kuwait by January 15, 1991.

She "learned so much more than I have ever learned before" or something like that. I remember that part from the letter because of a curious grammar structure in that sentence. She was the assistant to the President of First Federal Savings and Loan.

I also wonder who Chad Trammel is supposed to represent. I thought of him again when I was opening to Lethal Weapon 2 and Riggs was jamming down the gas pedal. I did that in Chad's car back in 9th or 10th grade. I had some kind of speaker out the window, I was trying to make some kind of Mr. Microphone sort of device. I remember we recorded it all on tape. Trammel, when I saw him in '94 at our 10 year reunion, was a lawyer in the Air Force. He was telling me something about standing near B-52s at Barkesly I think it was, and the thought comes to mind, although I'm not sure from where, that he was saying something about kicking the tires. Back in '94, when I told him I was repairing ATM machines, he asked me if I ever thought about doing something else, as though he expected me to be doing more. He and Jimmi Anne Armstrong were going into a bar one night during our get together and I said "let's light this place up." It seemed like a silly thing to say, I thought afterwards.

In the context of my artificial and symbolic memory, I can "remember" Tracie Rhodes wanting me to ask her father, Joseph, for permission to marry her. Tracie's birthday, in the context of my artificial and symbolic memory, was July 16th. We met when she started working at the First Federal bank in Greenville, although she worked at the branches in Clemson, South Carolina, which is home to the Clemson Tigers. I lived nearby in Central, South Carolina, off Issaqueena Trail, before I moved to Country Club Estates in Greer, South Carolina. Her job was to restock the ATM machines with cash while my job was to repair the machines if they broke down. She would call me out if any repairs were needed.

I can still visualize that last time I saw Rachel. She was leaving my apartment one morning after we spent the night together. I was feeling incredible. I look back at it as a feeling that everything was right in the world. I "remember" thinking later over the years of just how wrong I was. That would be the last day I saw her.

It was the morning of Halloween. She had called me the day before and I was very happy to hear from her. Other thoughts suggest she was disappointed that I was so eager to have sex with her while she just wanted to spend some time with me; probably something about forming an emotional foundation between us. But that morning of Halloween, I was on top of the world and I couldn't wait to see her again. The next thoughts I have are of a few days later, on my birth day, which was November 2nd. I was wanting to see her and my memories about what was supposed to happen are vague. There is something about her going out of town to see a relative; her aunt maybe. The next thoughts I have are of coming home that night of 11/2 to find she had left a voice message for me and I was very excited to hear from her because I wanted to see her again. I can't explain where the next thoughts come from. It is as though someone told me this part but I can't "remember" ever having such a conversation. Plus, I don't recall that we had common friends that would even relay such information to me. So anyway, I didn't hear from her again after that voice message because she was angry that I wasn't home that night. She thought I was out on a date with some other woman and I wasn't at home on my birth day to wait for her to call. And I have thought about those details that I don't understand how I knew what she was feeling because it seemed unfair. I wasn't out on a date that night. I was on-call for First Federal that week and I had been called out to repair an ATM machine. The person from the bank that let me in the bank was Maria Coleman and around the time Rachel left that message, I was sitting in a nearby Hardee's after I had fixed the machine and I was talking with Maria about how much I cared about Rachel and that I couldn't wait to see her again.

What this also reminds me of again is a conversation I “remember” from my artificial memories of talking to Maria Coleman at her desk. She is the friend I “remember” that was the assistant to the President of the First Federal bank where I worked. I was dating Tracie, my future wife, at the time, as Maria was commenting about how I never talked about her the way I used to talk about Rachel Barnett or Bobbilynn Michelle Townsend. Something how I was crazy about those too but I didn’t seem as crazy about Tracie. I have thought about that conversation a lot over the years and how I was not going to get involved again with anyone unless I was just as crazy about her.

I am thinking that Rachel Barnett and Bobbilynn Michelle Townsend reflect my feelings for Phoebe Cates and Julia Roberts. Those fictional characters in my artificial memories were created years after my relationships with those two woman. I can still visualize so much detail with both of them. I am thinking though, that my experiences with Bobbilynn has something also to do with the comet. I “remember” the first time she came over to my apartment at Wexford. It was very cold that night. I rented the movie “RoboCop” and we were watching it on my Mitsubishi television. The heater on my apartment quit working that night and I only had one blanket, which I gave her as she sat there on the couch watching the movie. I “remember” that it was blanket that I got a long time earlier from Jim Shea, formerly of Hollywood, Florida, and there was an image of a tiger on the blanket. I have thought often of that blanket over the past few years. The last time, in my artificial memories that I “remembered” seeing it was when I was sitting in the back of my white Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo one night and the drive-in theatre near Charlotte, NC. I used to like to go there by myself and they always presented 3 first-run movies each night on the weekends. As all the vehicles I drove in my artificial memories are symbolic, I believe that Grand Cherokee represented the Space Shuttle. So anyway, later that night, as Bobbilynn was leaving my Wexford apartment, we were standing at her car, a Geo Storm, and I asked if I could kiss her and she replied by asking “I don’t know. Can you?” I have puzzled over that for a long time. These are all symbolic memories and the true meaning is very interesting to ponder. It is an exercise in philosophy or poetry in a lot of ways. You read it and you understand what you are.

Acting on a complaint by leaders of an Indian tribe who say a private company had illegally taken fossils from tribal land, federal agents in South Dakota have seized the largest and best-preserved tyrannosaurus rex fossil ever found.

The seizure ignited a struggle involving the Justice Department, Indian leaders, scientists, a large fossil-dealer and many dinosaur enthusiasts.

The dispute centers on ownership of the remains of the dinosaur, which in life would have been more than 50 feet long.

Though such fossils are worth nothing in the ground, an important fossil like the South Dakota dinosaur could bring several million dollars, particularly from a museum abroad, paleontologists said.

More important, from the paleontologists' point of view, the specimen offers rare opportunities to learn more about the tyrannosaurus rex. Though care was taken in packing the bones, they said, they feared the bones might be damaged in the move.

CHICAGO - U.S. Sen.-elect Barack Obama, whose 1995 book jumped onto best-seller lists after his keynote address to the Democratic National Convention, has landed a three-book deal worth $1.9 million.

Crown Publishing Group and Random House Children's Books, divisions of Random House, announced Friday that Obama will write two books for adults and one for children.

He'll be paid an $850,000 advance for each adult book and $200,000 for the children's book, said Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs.
