The President of the United States has asked me to hear you out. So here I am.

O'NEILL

Well. So long as you've got an open mind.

KINSEY
And this must be the drain through which the money flows.

HAMMOND
I know you have a very busy schedule, Senator.

KINSEY
Yes. Of course, General Hammond. Please be seated. Let me see. Colonel O'Neill. Captain Carter. Doctor Jackson. Teal'c. With an apostrophe, I understand. Let me first say that though illness robbed me of the chance ever to serve in this country's military, I have the greatest respect for those who do. Especially those who have made service of country their life's work. As I have in my own way. There is no more honourable vocation.

HAMMOND
Thank you, Senator. I couldn't agree more.

KINSEY
Having said that, I want to make one thing abundantly clear. I am by nature suspicious of all things secretive. Be they in the government or inside the military service. I believe that which grows in shadow, but withers in the light of day…does not belong on the vine. I've read several reports of your excursions. Colonel Samuels has been kind enough to brief me on the Stargate, and I have tried to maintain an open mind. I must admit that I find the very idea of this facility, of this command, offensive. It is far too dangerous to be this secretive. I have found several examples where you have averted tragedy on a global scale by the skin of your teeth

Remarks to the Reserve Officers Association

January 23, 1991

Thank you, General Bob Hope. And I'm pleased to see so many Members of Congress here tonight. I don't want to get in trouble, but I want to single out Senator Strom Thurmond; Senator Ted Stevens; and, of course, a great friend of the Reserve, my old friend, Sonny Montgomery over here -- the General. And all the rest of the Members who are with us tonight.

My apologies to all for speaking before the broccoli and leaving -- [laughter] -- but given the circumstances, I'm sure you'll understand. And I am proud to share this evening with the leadership of the Reserve Officers Association, and I am deeply honored to be named Minuteman of the Year. But I know tonight our thoughts go out to men and women earning the honor of a grateful nation at this very moment: the citizen-soldiers, 100,000 strong, serving now with the coalition forces in the Gulf. And I salute them, each and every one.

Those American Reservists are part of an allied force standing against the forces of aggression -- standing up for what is right.

49. Hallorann, Going up the Country

WHAAAAAAAAA! the airhorn bellowed indignantly.

He squeezed the accelerator like the breast of a muchloved woman and the Buick scooted forward and toward the right. There was no embankment over here; the plows headed up instead of down had only to push the snow directly over the drop.

(The drop, ah yes, the drop-)

The wingblades on Hallorann's left, fully four feet higher than the Electra's roof, flirted by with no more than an inch or two to spare. Until the plow had actually cleared him, Hallorann had thought a crash inevitable. A prayer which was half an inarticulate apology to the boy flitted through his mind like a torn rag.

Then the plow was past, its revolving blue lights glinting and flashing in Hallorann's rearview mirror.

He jockeyed the Buick's steering wheel back to the left, but nothing doing. The scoot had turned into a skid, and the Buick was floating dreamily toward the lip of the drop, spurning snow from under its mudguards.

He flicked the wheel back the other way, in the skid's direction, and the car's front and rear began to swap places. Panicked now, he pumped the brake hard, and then felt a hard bump. In front of him the road was gone… he was looking into a bottomless chasm of swirling snow and vague greenish-gray pines far away and far below.

(I'm going holy mother of Jesus I'm going off)

And that was where the car stopped, canting forward at a thirty-degree angle, the left fender jammed against a guardrail, the rear wheels nearly off the ground. When Hallorann tried reverse, the wheels only spun helplessly. His heart was doing a Gene Krupa drumroll.

He got out-very carefully he got out-and went around to the Buick's back deck.

He was standing there, looking at the back wheels helplessly, when a cheerful voice behind him said: “Hello there. fella. You must be shit right out of your mind.”

He turned around and saw the plow forty yards further down the road, obscured in the blowing snow except for the raftered dark brown streak of its exhaust and the revolving blue lights on top. The driver was standing just behind him, dressed in a long sheepskin coat and a slicker over it. A blue-and-white pinstriped engineer's cap was perched on his head, and Hallorann could hardly believe it was staying on in the teeth of the wind.

(Glue. It sure-God must be glue.)

The Untold Story of the Persian Gulf War

By Rick Atkinson

Houghton Mifflin Company, 520pp. $16

Chapter One: First Night

Barely seventy-five feet above the dark Nafud, one of Saudi Arabia's three great deserts, the helicopters pushed toward the border in a line as straight as monks filing to vespers. A gap precisely five rotor discs' wide separated each aircraft from the next. Two Air Force Pave Lows stuffed with sophisticated navigation gear led as pathfinders, followed by four Army Apaches, laden with rockets and missiles and extra fuel tanks.

Frigid night air gushed into the lead Apache. The pilot, Warrant Officer Thomas R. (Tip) O'Neal, fumbled with the heating controls. The flapper valves on the helicopter's filtration system seemed to be wedged open, apparently jammed with sand. As O'Neal pressed a gloved hand against the vent, his co-pilot, Warrant Officer David A. Jones, came on the intercom from the back seat. "Tip, you see that glow off to the north? That might be it."

Souter Edged Out Woman Judge As Bush Made `Very Close' Call

By Ann Devroy

Washington Post

WASHINGTON - It was late Monday afternoon and Edith Jones, the federal appeals court judge from Texas who had spent the night stashed in an administration ``safe house,'' was hiding out once again in a second-floor office in the White House. Six hours earlier she had met with President Bush and now was waiting to find out if she would be nominated to the Supreme Court.

Down the hall, David Souter, an appeals court judge from New Hampshire, was in another office, waiting for the same decision that was being thrashed out in the White House family quarters by Bush and four aides.

In the end, according to interviews with the participants in that debate or their top aides, the choice of Souter came down, as much as anything, to political timing, not qualification. Souter was judged the more scholarly and ``brilliant'' of two good judges, but more important, the candidate who would be less controversial in Senate confirmation hearings.

O'NEILL
General, politics isn't my strong suit, but doesn't President outrank senator?

HAMMOND
Senator Kinsey is Chairman of the Appropriations Committee. He's demanded to know what is behind the line item the Pentagon refers to as Area 52.

O'NEILL
That would be the Stargate.

HAMMOND
An unofficial project…that just happens to cost 7.4 billion dollars a year to operate. The President and the Joint Chiefs thought if they granted the Senator the appropriate clearances, let him in on the existence of the SGC, he'd recognise its importance to national security and authorise the expenditure.

O'NEILL
I take it he didn't.

HAMMOND
The idea backfired. After reading your mission reports and being fully briefed by Colonel Samuels, the Senator decided the SGC would receive no further funding from the Treasury.

O'NEILL
That effectively shuts us down, sir.

HAMMOND
Very effectively. It costs nearly a billion dollars just to turn the lights on around here.

O'NEILL
How 'bout a bake sale? Yard sale? Garage?

HAMMOND
This is what I look like when I'm not laughing, Colonel.

O'NEILL
Car wash?

[Hammond suppresses a laugh.]
