I mean, isn't God everywhere? - Amen, brother.
And don't you think that the Almighty has better things to worry about than where one little guy spends one measly hour of his week? - Tell it, Daddy.
- And what if we pick the wrong religion? Every week we're just making God madder and madder.

There was a lot of stuff in a dream just before I woke up but I only remember fairly clearly one part and I wish I could remember it all. I also just now remember as I write this that I was dreaming of work again. I woke up at some point in the middle of my sleep period and I had been dreaming extensively of all this work I am now doing and I have that type of dream often, as I have noted. So anyway, it was not until after I had been awake for a few minutes that what the dream visuals reminded me of is of a parachute tandem jump but in the dream it was different and I don't think that is what it represents as I doubt I have ever made a tandem jump as it appeared in the dream. The reason I started thinking about a tandem jump is because there was a guy behind me and there was some kind of device that had us both attached as though it was connected to our clothing and that was in turn linked together. As I wrote that last sentence, I started thinking it could actually represent we were on a 'chain gang.' So anyway, in the dream, we were in some large room not unlike a warehouse or an auditorium and I am aware there were other people around. The point I remember clearly and that started me thinking about a tandem parachute jump was the I saw my foot and my lower leg in the air as I was falling to the ground but what I was doing in the dream was that I had knocked the feet out from that guy I was attached to and I was causing him to fall to the ground so I could cause all my weight to land on top of him as he hit the ground so I could injure him as much as possible. The next scene is in some kind of room and it almost seems to be some kind of machinery room but I cannot visualize any specifics so I can describe why I feel that is where we are and I am left with the vague sense that it is some kind of tool and machinery room on an aircraft carrier. I am also left with the vague sense that new person in that room is the actor Edward James Olmos but that person is really only an indistinct figure. The dream at this part seems to be that I am getting the lock taken off me and I can visualize the lock as the kind of brass lock with the U-hinge that the U.S. Navy uses and the guy that had been attached to me as well as the other person in the room both have a large set of keys and they are trying to figure out which key will open the lock. I look down and read that there is a '9913' stamped on the lock that restrains me and it is that Olmos-figure that has the key stamped '9913' and that does indeed unlock my lock. I don't remember anything else after that in the dream and I guess that is when I woke up and got out of bed.

I have been trying to fall asleep for a while now but I don't feel the least bit sleepy and it is worse because my leg aches. So anyway, I just now suddenly remembered a dream I had just before waking up last time, or at I think it was just before waking up, but I know it was the last time I was asleep and I woke up I guess about 8:00 AM yesterday. There were several sequences in the dream but I only remember now this one scene that I wanted to write about after I got up. As I write this now I think to myself that I woke up after the dream I wanted to write about and I might have gone back to sleep for a short time because I was thinking about how I could no longer visualize the details I wanted to remember from the dream. The dream seemed to be of me in a bank and I was given a key to a safety deposity box and I could clearly see the four digit number on the key and then I could see that I was looking at a wall with the doors of a group of safety deposit boxes and one of those doors matched the number on the key. I found myself thinking after I woke up though that these setting seemed to precisely match what I would see if I was in a post office though and I even thought during the dream that whatever was in my safety deposit box was getting more packed because apparently information was being put into it and that matches precisely to a mailbox in a U.S. Post Office. But yet, the notion lingers that it had something to do with a safety deposit box and that remains as an important notion despite the fact that my visualizations seem to match with the post office. So I was standing there and I clearly saw the number on the key but there was some dialog in my mind that I was not going to open that box at that time and so I was walking through the notional bank office but that visually seemed to be a post office and I was going into another room and I cannot now remember what happened there. It seemed there was another storage locker that I was going in there for but I cannot remember anything else except some scenes as I walked around through the structures in that bank or post office. I found myself wondering several times after waking about that number on that key and I think it was '6943' but there was some uncertainty in my mind after waking up because I could no longer visualize it although I feel certain that I did visualize it clearly during the dream.

Statement on the Recovery of the Remains of Captain Michael S. "Scott" Speicher in Iraq
August 2, 2009
The news that Captain Speicher's remains have been recovered is a reminder of the selfless service that led him to make the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. As with all our service men and women considered missing in action, we remain steadfast in our determination to bring our American heroes home. I am grateful to the Marines who pursued the information that led to Captain Speicher's recovery so that he can now come home.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family, and I hope that the recovery of his remains will bring them a needed sense of closure.
Note: The statement referred to Capt. Michael S. "Scott" Speicher, USN, who was lost in action on January 17, 1991, and whose remains were recovered in Iraq's Anbar Province in July.

I dreamed just now of what seems to be the flight of the Stargazer aircraft on 6/27/1994 but the visualizations I assume are mostly just the product of a dream. As usual, there seem to be details that happened before the part I can remember enough to write about that I can not now remember. In the dream, I was onboard that aircraft and we were traveling along towards the point where we would deploy the rocket as it fired and traveled towards space. All I can really visualize though is that the aircraft seemed to be invisible. To me at least. I have the sense that other people could see it. We also were no high over the ground but we were very close to the ground and we were traveling at a rate of motion that did not seem very fast. This all was taking a long time too. I kept expecting the rocket to depart from the aircraft but it did not. I can see the terrain very well. There seemed to be people on the ground looking up and to watch us fly over. We were at another point so close the ground above a highway that I saw a woman in a police car looking up at the sky and I think she was watching us fly over. I think it was before that we were flying over new terrain and I was marveling at the color of the foliage of the trees and it might have seemed that I could even touch the trees with my feet. I remember that very well. But that part is disorienting. It is as though I was standing very close to a wall but then that wall was not actually there and what I saw in front of me was the sky and terrain and everything associated with flying in that aircraft above the ground. It seemed I was talking to the other two men on the aircraft flight deck just then and I become slightly aware as I think about the dream of equipment and instruments around me although that could be the last part. I do have the sense they are wearing uniforms and I think I am too. I am in the middle and I seem to be talking to the guy on my right. Then the part with the woman in the police car seems to happen and then we travel over an area where the terrain drops suddenly and I am marveling at that because I can clearly see everything directly below us. Just because the drop I commented to the guy on my left, who might have actually been me, that there was a stop sign on the road below us at what seemed to be a T-intersection. We seemed to have been following the highway and the highway ended at that intersection with the other highway running perpendicular to it but we continued on a straight line and that was when I saw the terrain drop sharply below us. I commented to the guy to my left who I guess was the pilot about that stop sign below and I cannot now remember our exact words but he responded to me with something about how that was my name on that stop sign and I wish I could remember better that scene from the dream although that was basically the important part. So I think this part is when the rocket was supposed to transfer to space but that is not really clear anymore. What I do remember is that now I am clinging to the side of a mountain and I have no idea where I am although I still have an association in my mind that I was on that aircraft I have been writing about. It is as though I was on the side of that mountain because I had been attached to a rope that was attached to that aircraft and the aircraft had been traveling along with me on that rope. I don't really understand enough to explain what I feel was going on in this part. I don't know. Maybe it doesn't matter. I remember the ground was very steep and I remember there was snow and I seemed to be examining the snow-covered foliage and I am aware of how steep the ground is and I am concerned because I no longer am connected to that aircraft by the rope. I am stuck there on the ground and I have no idea where I am or how to get back to anywhere. I can see what seems to be a level portion of the ground and I guess it is a trail. I can also see a window of a building and it really seems out of place because a consistent thought is that I might as well be on Mount Everest right now but that doesn't really make any sense because I remember seeing all those signs of civilization we flew over. So anyway, I am still lying on or clinging to the mountain in the same position but I am looking at the window and I can visualize it well and I can see the various details of the configuration and I am wondering if I can slide through that window or if it is too small for me to get through. There seems to be no other place to go than through that window where it looks warm and cozy and I see no other signs of civilization other than that window. Then I seem to have made it through the window and I am vaguely aware of being inside the business that runs there and I vaguely recall talking to someone but I cannot remember enough about that conversation to articulate. What seems to happened was that I explained that I was lost from that flight and what they seemed to have done is to put me on a shuttle bus for a hotel and they sent me to a hotel where I can stay. I am aware that I have access to my funds but that is only a notion. I have only the clothes on my back and I am still confused about where I am. I am aware of another person on the bus and I can visualize the we got to the hotel while riding that bus and I can visualize walking through some parts of that hotel and I see that I walked into the registration lobby but then I turned around and walked back out without registering and I am not certain what I was going to do. I still have no idea where I am. I am thinking that the people I was with will probably look for me and I think that if I use my bank card they will know where I am on the ground. I think that was the end. I think the dream ended after I walked back outside the hotel and I was standing outside looking around. I can vaguely visualize the surroundings but I have no idea where it was.

As I turned to start running that number I see that I had already typed it in but I am confused about whether I typed it in there in the past few minutes just as I jumped out of bed to write about or if I typed it in there yesterday morning, which is vaguely familiar, and then I forgot to come back to it.

That is a period of almost exactly 19 years. What that reminds me of is what I wrote about how Kerry Burgess had been together with his girlfriend or maybe they were married by then, for slightly more than 1 year before he was killed.

They stuck a lot of needles in me when I was inpatient at the University of Washington Medical Center back in the summer of 2005. I remember one very dark night when I was in a mental haze from the drugs they were forcing on me (only because I went to the City of Kent Washington police department to report criminal activity directed at my personal property and which continues unabated to this very day) and I awoke in the dark in that hospital bed and a woman was glaring at me as she stuck another needle in hand. I thought about that later and I decided she was glaring at me because she was possibly expected me to club her with my fist, which I did not.

#6: You and your...race invented murder. Invented killing for sport, greed, envy. It's man's one true art form.
Baltar: You've done some killing of your own, I think.
#6: Yes, well,we're you're children. You taught us well.
Baltar: Why does god want to bring a child into this kind of world anyway?
#6: Because, despite everything, despite all of it, he still wants to offer you salvation. Our child will bring that salvation, but only if you accept your role as her father. And her guardian.

U.S. Pilot’s Remains Found in Iraq After 18 Years
By THOM SHANKER
Published: August 2, 2009
WASHINGTON — Navy officials announced early Sunday that Marines in the western Iraqi province of Anbar had found remains that have been positively identified as those of an American fighter pilot shot down in the opening hours of the first Persian Gulf war in 1991.
The Navy pilot, Capt. Michael Scott Speicher, was the only American missing in action from that war. Efforts to determine what happened to him after his F/A-18 Hornet was shot down by an Iraqi warplane on Jan. 17, 1991, had continued despite false rumors and scant information.
Conflicting reports from Iraq had, over the years, fueled speculation that the pilot, promoted to captain from lieutenant commander in the years he was missing, might have been taken into captivity either after parachuting from his jet or after a crash landing.
But the evidence in Iraq suggests he did not survive and was buried by Bedouins shortly after he was shot down.
An official statement released early Sunday said that Marines in western Iraq had received information from local residents last month about the crash of an American jet and the burial of the pilot.
“One of these Iraqi citizens stated that they were present when Captain Speicher was found dead at the crash site by Bedouins and his remains buried,” the statement said. “The Iraqi citizens led U.S. Marines to the site.”
A search of the area last week recovered remains that included bones and skeletal fragments, which were flown to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware for scientific examination.
Positive identification was made by visual and radiographical comparisons of Captain Speicher’s dental records with the jawbone recovered at the site.
“Our Navy will never give up looking for a shipmate, regardless of how long or how difficult that search may be,” said Adm. Gary Roughead, chief of naval operations, in a statement. “We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Captain Speicher and his family for the sacrifice they have made for our nation and the example of strength they have set for all of us.”
Although the dental records confirmed the identity of the dead pilot, further DNA tests will be conducted to compare the remains with samples previously provided by family members, the statement said.
Cindy Laquidara, a spokeswoman for the Speicher family, told The Associated Press that relatives had learned on Saturday of the discovery. “The family’s proud of the way the Defense Department continued on with our request” to not abandon the search, she said. “We will be bringing him home.”
Ms. Laquidara said the family would say more after being briefed by Pentagon officials, but did not know when that would be.
After the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and the collapse of Saddam Hussein’s government, a joint team from the Central Intelligence Agency and the Defense Intelligence Agency sifted through recovered documents, interrogated prisoners of war and searched possible crash sites to try to determine Captain Speicher’s fate.
Defense Department officials had been skeptical about reports that Captain Speicher was alive. Some of those reports were haunting, including one story that his initials or name had been found scratched into the wall of a cell in an Iraqi prison.
A crash site had been identified as early as 1993, when a group of Qataris that had been on a hunting trip in remote west-central Iraq handed over some materials they found that later were identified as coming from his jet.
In December 1995, the United States, working through the International Committee of the Red Cross, was able to send a team to the crash site to investigate. They found no ejection seat and no signs of a body or bones.

Remains Identified as Navy Captain Michael Scott Speicher
The Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) has positively identified remains recovered in Iraq as those of Captain Michael Scott Speicher. Captain Speicher was shot down flying a combat mission in an F/A-18 Hornet over west-central Iraq on January 17th, 1991 during Operation Desert Storm.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Captain Speicher's family for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country," said Ray Mabus, Secretary of the Navy. "I am also extremely grateful to all those who have worked so tirelessly over the last 18 years to bring Captain Speicher home."
“Our Navy will never give up looking for a shipmate, regardless of how long or how difficult that search may be,” said Admiral Gary Roughead, Chief of Naval Operations. “We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Captain Speicher and his family for the sacrifice they have made for our nation and the example of strength they have set for all of us.”
Acting on information provided by an Iraqi citizen in early July, US Marines stationed in Al Anbar Province went to a location in the desert which was believed to be the crash site of Captain Speicher’s jet. The Iraqi citizen stated he knew of two Iraqi citizens who recalled an American jet impacting the desert and the remains of the pilot being buried in the desert. One of these Iraqi citizens stated that they were present when Captain Speicher was found dead at the crash site by Bedouins and his remains buried. The Iraqi citizens led US Marines to the site who searched the area. Remains were recovered over several days during the past week and flown to Dover Air Force Base for scientific identification by the AFIP’s Office of the Armed Forces Medical Examiner.
The recovered remains include bones and multiple skeletal fragments. Positive identification was made by comparing Captain Speicher’s dental records with the jawbone recovered at the site. The teeth are a match, both visually and radiographically.
While dental records have confirmed the remains to be those of Captain Speicher, the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology DNA Lab in Rockville, Maryland is running DNA tests on the remains recovered in Iraq and comparing them to DNA reference samples previously provided by family members. Results will take approximately 24 hours.
A high-resolution photo of Captain Speicher is available at http://www.navy.mil/view_single.asp?id=2934

362 - Remarks Upon Signing Bills To Combat Organized Crime and Racketeering.
September 13, 1961
IT IS a pleasure to sign these three important bills which we hope will aid the United States. Government and the people of this country in the fight against organized crime.
These pieces of legislation are the culmination, in these three areas, of years of effort by the Federal Government and by the Congress to place more effective tools in the hands of local, State, and national police.
And therefore it is a pleasure to sign them, and in the presence of the representative of the Justice Department, Mr. Hoover--and Members of the Congress of both parties who have given this legislation strong bipartisan support--most particularly Senator McClellan whose recent hearings indicate great need for this kind of legislation.

361 - Letter to the Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, Concerning the Dedication of the Brookhaven Synchrotron.
September 13, 1961
Dear Dr. Seaborg:
I understand that on Wednesday, September 13, 1961, the new Alternating Gradient Synchrotron at the Brookhaven National Laboratory will be dedicated. The completion of this machine--the largest high energy particle accelerator in the world--represents a significant scientific accomplishment on the part of Brookhaven National Laboratory. The nation is justly proud of this achievement. By means of this and similar instruments of science, the United States, in cooperation with scientists throughout the world, is making substantial strides toward man's greater understanding of the properties and interactions of fundamental particles from which all matter is composed.
I am informed that the Commission will be represented at the dedication ceremonies by Commissioner Leland Haworth. Perhaps he would be kind enough to convey to Dr. Maurice Goldhaber, Director of the Brookhaven National Laboratory, and to all the scientists and engineers who participated in this great step forward, my sincere congratulations.
Sincerely yours,
JOHN F. KENNEDY
[The Honorable Glenn T. Seaborg, Chairman, United States Atomic Energy Commission, Washington 25, D.C.]

Richard Nixon
XXXVII President of the United States: 1969 - 1974
Proclamation 4115 - National Week of Concern for Americans Who Are Prisoners of War or Missing in Action
March 10, 1972
By the President of the United States Of America
A Proclamation
1,623 American servicemen and some 50 U.S. civilians are now either missing in action or being held captive by North Vietnam and its allies. At the end of this month, the first men to be taken prisoner will begin their ninth year in captivity. This is the longest internment ever endured by American fighting men; it is also one of the most brutal.
The POW/MIA story of this long and difficult war is a tragic one:
The enemy continues adamant in his refusal even to identify all the Americans being held. He continues to flout the Geneva Prisoner of War Convention which establishes minimum humane standards for treatment of prisoners—a treaty to which North Vietnam is a signatory, just as are South Vietnam and the United States and 128 other nations. He continues to block impartial inspection of the prison camps. He continues to deny repatriation for seriously sick and wounded prisoners. He continues to ignore the prisoners' right to regular correspondence with their families.
And so those families suffer in spirit hardly less than their men suffer in the flesh. They live in a nightmare of unremitting anguish and gnawing concern. Many cannot even know whether their loved ones are still alive; those who do know this much, must live with their additional knowledge of the cruel conditions in which the prisoners exist.
Each new chapter in this outrage has stiffened the American people's determination to see justice done. We have stood and will continue to stand united as a nation in our concern and compassion for the prisoners and missing men. We mean to see this matter through.
Concern for the prisoners' plight, moreover, has spread to the people of goodwill around the world—and we may be confident that their humanitarian efforts, though so far rebuffed as callously as our own, will still continue as steadfastly as our own.
The United States has spared no effort—by diplomacy, by negotiation, by every other means—to secure fair treatment of our captive sons and brothers and to obtain their ultimate freedom.
As we set aside a special week of national concern for this continuing tragedy, and a special day of prayer for its resolution, we do so with a determination to persist in this effort—for principle, for peace, for the sake of these brave men and their parents and brothers and sisters and wives and the children some have never seen.
Now, Therefore, I, Richard Nixon, President of the United States of America, as requested by the Congress in Senate Joint Resolution 189, do hereby designate the period of March 26 through April 1, 1972, as National Week of Concern for Prisoners of War/Missing in Action, and Sunday, March 26, 1972, as a National Day of Prayer for the lives and safety of these men.
I call upon all the people of the United States to observe this week with such appropriate ceremonies and activities as will stir and sustain widespread concern for the missing men and prisoners, nourish the patient courage of their loved ones, and—above all—hasten the day of their safe return to home and freedom.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this tenth day of March, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred seventy-two, and of the Independence of the United States of America the one hundred ninety-sixth.
RICHARD NIXON
NOTE: The proclamation was signed in a ceremony at the White House.

On September 14, 1959, 12 days after passing through her point of closest approach to the Earth, the planet Venus was bombarded by pulses of radio waves sent from Earth. Anxious scientists at Lincoln Laboratories in Massachusetts waited to detect the echo of the reflected waves. To their initial disappointment, neither the data from this day, nor from any of the days during that month-long observation, showed any detectable echo near inferior conjunction of Venus. However, a later, improved reanalysis of the data showed a bona fide echo in the data from one day: September 14. Thus occurred the first recorded radar echo from a planet.
On March 9, 1960, the editorial office of Physical Review Letters received a paper by R. V. Pound and G. A. Rebka, Jr., entitled “Apparent Weight of Photons”. The paper reported the first successful laboratory measurement of the gravitational red shift of light. The paper was accepted and published in the April 1 issue.

Jan. 24, 1984: Birth of the Cool (Computer, That Is)
By Tony Long 01.24.08
1984: The first Apple Macintosh computer goes on sale.
The Macintosh 128K hit the market two days after it was announced to the world in the now-legendary commercial aired during Super Bowl XVIII.
If the spot, directed by Ridley Scott, was a minor masterpiece of commercial zeitgeist, the computer itself was a product of its time -- underpowered and not very easy to use. But it did represent a sea change, a paradigm shift, whichever late-20th century business cliché you care to use.
It was the first to feature a graphical user interface that could be called user-friendly and was the first, with the advent of the LaserWriter printer and Aldus PageMaker, to make desktop publishing a reality.
The Macintosh 128K (that was your RAM) screamed along at 8 MHz, featured two serial ports and could accommodate one 3.5-inch floppy disc. It ran the Mac OS 1.0, came with a 9-inch black-and-white monitor and sold for a cool $2,500 (the equivalent of $5,000 in today's dollars).
In a little under three months, Apple sold 50,000 of these babies, not exactly an avalanche.
Specs aside, what was really interesting was the palace intrigue swirling behind the scenes at the corporate mother ship in Cupertino, California. It would play a role in the development of the Macintosh.

Simi Man's Ashes Aboard 1st Orbiting Crypt
Memorial: His remains join those of Gene Roddenberry, Timothy Leary and 21 others rocketed into space.
April 22, 1997 MACK REED TIMES STAFF WRITER
Shot into orbit aboard a funeral rocket Monday morning, James Spellman Sr. achieved in death what he could only dream of in life--space travel.
This morning, a tiny aluminum tube full of the former Simi Valley man's cremated ashes is still whizzing around the Earth--along with the remains of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, psychedelic philosopher Timothy Leary and 21 other aerospace luminaries and average citizens--aboard a first-of-its-kind orbiting crypt.
The craft is to spin through the upper fringes of the atmosphere for two to six years, say officials of Houston-based Celestis Inc., the company that organized the launch.
Then its decaying orbit will send it plunging back toward Earth, to burn up harmlessly on reentry like a shooting star.
"I saw the [on-board] video, an aft-looking view as the vehicle powered its way up into lower Earth orbit," said James Spellman Jr., who helped land his father a spot on the Celestis rocket through his own lobbying on behalf of commercial space exploration.
"It looks like it was fine," he said. "It's a bit of satisfaction, knowing that it's been successful and that my dad is a rather unique pioneer in doing something not too many people living or deceased have done."
Ginger Spellman wept when she learned of the launch.
James Spellman had been husband to her. He had helped raise their children in Simi Valley amid the booms of rocket engine tests as Rocketdyne muscled its way through the Space Race of the '60s, '70s and early '80s.
He had worked as a dedicated Air Force recruiter, and later a real estate broker. And he had made good friends who were with him through the last of his 67 years, until fast-moving brain cancer claimed his life in October.
So when word came from 50,000 feet above the Canary Islands that the rocket had safely dropped from beneath the wing of an L-1011 jet called Stargazer, ignited its motor and zipped into space piggybacked aboard a Spanish satellite, Ginger Spellman said, "I broke down.
"I went over to his picture--we have his picture here and we have [the rest of] his ashes here--and I had my few moments with him," she said from their home near Lake Isabella, still holding back tears.
"It's very moving," she said. "I think it's fantastic that he's the one to go on the first mission up there. He's setting a record."
She is ambivalent about having Spellman ride the same craft as counterculture godfather Leary, saying only of the latter, "There's always one bad apple in the bunch, so say I'm happy he is in the company of Gene Roddenberry and let it go at that."
James Spellman Sr.'s closest friends say he would have loved the idea of having his ashes shot into space.
Longtime friend Chic Cicchelli recalls working as a civilian aircraft spotter just after World War II in Plainfield, N.J., where he met Spellman, the Air Force sergeant in charge of his division.
Cicchelli also remembers visiting Spellman where he lay dying of inoperable brain cancer at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Westwood last fall.
"He'd smile and say, 'That's good going, boys,' " Cicchelli said Monday. "I'm just so thrilled for him. I think he'd like that he was part of something that's active, and brand new and a frontier."
Spellman is in rich company.
The rocket carries a quarter-ounce each of ashes from his remains and those of Roddenberry and Leary.
The funds for Leary's final trip were primarily contributed by his friends Susan Sarandon, the actress, and Tony Scott, director of "Top Gun" and other films, according to space industries consultant Carol Rosin, who said she told Leary about Celestis a few weeks before he died last year.
"He loved the idea that he was going to take this flight," said Rosin, who was also on hand for the launch. "He would say, 'Ride the light into space.' "
As for Roddenberry, Celestis officials say that one of the first people to buy a memorial flight was Majel Roddenberry, widow of the "Star Trek" creator who died in 1991. It was actually his ashes' second ride into space--as a tribute, a bit of remains was taken along on a 1992 NASA mission.
The rocket also carries the ashes of Krafft Ehricke, a German V2 engineer who worked on this nation's Apollo space program; Princeton physicist Gerard K. O'Neill, who conceptualized orbiting space colonies; and Todd Hawley, founder of the International Space University.
There are blue-collar passengers too--a Seattle dockworker, a New York restaurateur, a San Francisco graphic designer and a Chicago antifreeze salesman, according to the launch service's Website, http://www.celestis.com
All were able to raise $4,800, the going rate for rocket-launched "interment" conducted by Celestis Inc., which plans to sent up two to three funeral shots per year.
Spellman's family plans to fulfill his dying wish to have the bulk of his remains interred at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia next month.
But his son says the family is proud to have a symbolic part of James Spellman Sr.'s remains join the Celestis space shot, which he likened to the ancient tradition of the Viking funeral.
"The family members would put the body of a loved one on a boat and cast it adrift on the sea," said James Spellman Jr. "That was their universe, their life. . . . And as the boat drifted off to sea, they would fire flaming arrows into the ship to set it afire, cremating the body.
"As we homestead on the moon or go up on Mars, . . . we will have people that will live and ultimately die in space," he said. "You're going to have to answer the question, what are you going to do with the body? Are you going to ship it back to Earth or bury it where it falls?"

Mr. Secretary, Mr. Minister, Madame, ladies and gentlemen:
I would like to repeat Mr. Malraux's last words which paid, I think, our country a singular compliment. He said, "There has been talk of the risks this painting took by leaving the Louvre. They are real, though exaggerated. But the risk taken by the boys who landed one day at Arromanches, to say nothing of those who preceded them 25 years before, were much more certain. To the humblest among them who may be listening to me now, I want to say without raising my voice that the masterpiece to which you are paying historic homage this evening, Mr. president, is a painting which he has saved." Mr. Minister, we are grateful to you.

Did we launch confetti out of my spacecraft when I landed on Mars? Something on the news today, can’t remember which one, KING5 maybe, got me thinking about that. Then I started thinking about something I was thinking of a few days ago. I was remembering our procedure for destroying classified magnet tapes that were used with the MK152 tactical program. The first time we did it, we were in the far North Atlantic and I figured that we could let the tape stream into the air off the fantail of the ship as we were sailing along. It was pretty cool. An officer made us stop doing that though as fish might get tangled up in the long strands of tape. So I figured out that I could break off the plastic sides of the mag tape reel and chop away of the tape and then throw that over board. It looked like confetti. Then I remember how people started using confetti at Microsoft for some reason, birthdays I think.

I was thinking earlier today about that memory I wrote of about watching chaff rounds explode in front of the Taylor one day out to sea during an exercise and I was standing look out on the bridge. I started thinking that memory actually represents confetti being launched from my landing craft on the surface of Mars.

The atmosphere probably would have eventually dissapated.

[ John Connor: ] You see... we spent a lot of time in Nicaragua and places like that. For a while there, she was with this crazy ex-Green Beret guy... running guns. Then there were some other guys. She'd shack up with anybody she could learn from... so she could teach me how to be this great military leader. Then she gets busted. It's like, "Sorry, kid, your mom's a psycho. Didn't you know?" Like everything I've been brought up to believe is all made-up bullshit. I hated her for that.

Charleston Devastated : At Least 9 Dead as Hugo Levels Buildings, Floods Historic City : 'Destruction Everywhere' After Storm
September 22, 1989 From Times Wire Services
CHARLESTON, S.C. — Hurricane Hugo slammed into this 300-year-old city of antebellum mansions with winds of 135 m.p.h. today, sending a wall of water surging through its historic streets, leveling dozens of buildings and peeling others open "like a can opener."
At least nine people in the Carolinas were killed before the storm moved on, leaving its fearsome mark on everything in its path for 100 miles.
"There's just destruction everywhere," Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley said after a tour of his ravaged city. "We have on our hands a degree of physical destruction that is unprecedented in anyone's living memory."
Looked Like a War Zone
Downtown Charleston looked like a war zone, and adding to the sense of unreality was a 52-foot yacht that was ripped from its moorings and tossed onto a main street.
Officials said eight people died in South Carolina and one in North Carolina. Brian Ellison, a spokesman for South Carolina Emergency Preparedness Division, said seven people died in counties surrounding Charleston.
Hugo killed another 23 people in the Caribbean earlier, bringing the death toll to 32.
Officials feared that the death toll in the Southeast would go much higher as the fate of people who ignored evacuation orders in low-lying areas was determined.
"It's going to be miraculous if we don't have a heavy loss of life," Gov. Carroll A. Campbell Jr. said.
'Worst Disaster'
"It is the worst storm, the worst disaster, I've ever seen anywhere," Campbell told ABC's "Good Morning America." "We've got a lot of people missing. We don't know how bad it is."
President Bush today declared a disaster area for seven counties in South Carolina. The order makes a variety of federal aid available, including temporary housing, low-cost loans for rebuilding and grants for repairing roads, bridges and other public structures.
Thirty major buildings in downtown Charleston were flattened, houses collapsed all over the city, and several people were trapped beneath a collapsed condominium complex, Elizabeth Tam of the Charleston County Police said early this morning.
Unreliable Communications
Police were at the scene, but no further details on injuries were available early this afternoon, in part because telephone communications to the city were unreliable.
The impact happened at the worst time in terms of flooding. Hugo carried with it a tidal surge, or a wall of water, 12 to 17 feet high that coincided with high tide at 2:13 a.m.
At least 20 boats washed ashore, Police Chief Reuben Greenberg said.
In one Charleston neighborhood, oak-lined streets bordered by restored antebellum mansions were under three feet of water, while the open-air market downtown was flooded with two feet of water. A massive wooden church door was tossed on the sidewalk.
In addition to flooding, fires from natural gas leaks erupted in Charleston, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired in 1861.
Details were still sketchy about flooding on the barrier islands off the coast, which bore the brunt of Hugo's fury.
Seventy miles up the coast near Myrtle Beach, the elite vacation retreat community of Garden City Beach was smashed, officials said. It was among the communities under an evacuation order before Hugo hit.
"Garden City for all practical purposes is gone," said M. L. Love, a Horry County administrator who toured the small, unincorporated resort town. Love said some larger buildings remained standing on the oceanfront, but otherwise destruction extended "as far as I could see."
On Pawleys Island, south of Myrtle Beach, authorities said at least 14 houses had been washed away. It was unclear whether there had been anyone in the buildings in spite of evacuation orders. Three piers disappeared in North Myrtle Beach, Cherry Grove and Garden City.
At dawn, people got their first look at Hugo's awesome destruction, and Charleston Police Maj. Edward Hethington said, "The scavengers started right in as they have done all along the path of this storm. They have ranged in age from 10 years old to 50 and they are from all areas of the city."
By midday, police had jailed 27 people for looting and National Guard troops mobilized by the governor began patrolling streets, some of which were under several feet of water.
The mayors of Charleston and most coastal cities and towns ravaged by the storm declared dusk-to-dawn curfews.
After a direct hit on South Carolina, Hugo weakened and was downgraded to a tropical storm at 6 a.m. by the National Weather Service. It headed northward through North Carolina and West Virginia on a path somewhat to the west of where forecasters had estimated, sparing coastal cities but bringing heavy rain to some inland areas.

200,000 Cheer Victory Parade Through Capital
June 09, 1991 WILLIAM J. EATON and BETH HAWKINS TIMES STAFF WRITERS
WASHINGTON — A flag-waving crowd of 200,000 Saturday cheered veterans of Operation Desert Storm as the nation's capital staged its biggest victory celebration since the end of World War II.
Stealth fighter planes zoomed overhead, tanks and Patriot missiles rolled by and more than 8,000 battle-clad troops marched past a beaming President Bush in a display of the American military might that crushed Iraq in 43 days of combat.
"Great day," the President exulted, reflecting the popular mood as well as the glorious summer weather, which produced temperatures in the low 80s and puffs of white clouds floating in a deep blue sky.
The elaborate celebration, which cost $12 million, drew scattered protests from critics, who said that it glorified militarism. And the turnout for the parade--estimated at 200,000 by U.S. Park Police--was far below predictions of 1 million or more spectators.
However, by the time a fireworks display ended shortly after 10 p.m., the crowd had grown to 800,000, Park Police said.
Old-fashioned patriotism was clearly the order of the day among the vast majority who lined the parade route.
"It's a way for the American people to feel good about themselves and their country,"

XLI President of the United States: 1989 - 1993
Remarks at the Annual Convention of the National Religious Broadcasters
January 27, 1992
Thank you for that wonderfully warm welcome. And to President Dave Clark, may I thank you, sir; Brandt Gustavson, the executive director. And let me salute your leadership of the NRB. I understand that former Secretary Dole was to be here; I don't know that she is. I know FCC Chairman Sykes is. And I see, of course, two good, respected friends, Jim Dobson and Billy Graham.
Ladies and gentlemen, this marks the fifth time that I've had the honor of addressing the annual convention of the National Religious Broadcasters. A year ago we met in the first week of a struggle to protect what is right and true. And I came before you to talk of what was not a Christian or Jewish war, not a Moslem war. It was a just war. And in the Persian Gulf we fought for good versus evil. It was that clear to me: right versus wrong, dignity against oppression. And America stood fast so that liberty could stand tall.
Today I want to thank you for helping America, as Christ ordained, to be "a light unto the world." Your support honored the finest soldiers, the finest sailors, marines, airmen, and coastguardsmen that any nation has ever known. And what they did in war, let us now do in peace. Just as our forces fought to defend all of what is best about America, we need you to help instill the traditional values that make life and liberty worth defending.
Let me begin with some good news for modern man. According to Gallup, the Gallup surveys, no society is more religious than the United States of America. Seven in ten Americans believe in life after death; 8 in 10, that God works miracles. Nine in ten Americans pray. And more than 90 percent believe in God, to which I say, thank God. I wish it were 100 percent.

VALA
We could try shooting them. You said the Priors are human, right? A few well-aimed shots might at least get their attention.
DANIEL
Well, you study enough religions, you find that killing the missionaries doesn't combat the overall philosophy.
VALA
Problem is that what the Priors are offering sounds quite good, until you get to the whole prostrating and burning people alive bits.
DANIEL
There's that, and I don't think any of us have read the real fine print yet.
VALA
Meaning?
DANIEL
Well, I personally know without a doubt the Priors are bad.
VALA
So creepy.
DANIEL
And believe-or-die is an archaic moral standing. Now, the Ori are wrong for doing what they're doing, but the part I haven't figured out yet, the part that's really bothering me is WHY they're doing it. I mean, why do they care if people worship them or not?
