MCCOY: Shouldn't we contact them, Jim? Tell them?
KIRK: Tell them what?
SPOCK: Too primitive to grasp the concept of space flight, Doctor. Our appearance here would only confuse and frighten them.

Superstition
How Skinner's pigeon experiment revealed signs of superstition in pigeons.
"They may seem unlikely candidates for psychological analysis, but pigeons have given a revealing insight into how animals, including humans, can be bound by superstition..."
The Superstition Experiment
In the Summer of 1947, renowned behavioral psychologist B.F. Skinner published his study on a group of pigeons that showed even animals are susceptible to the human condition that is superstition.
Skinner conducted his research on a group of hungry pigeons whose body weights had been reduced to 75% of their normal weight when well-fed. For a few minutes each day, a mechanism fed the birds at regular intervals. What observers of the pigeons found showed the birds developing superstitious behavior, believing that by acting in a particular way, or committing a certain action, food would arrive.

Homerpalooza [ The Simpsons television series episode ]
Original Airdate in U.S.: 19-May-96
(from internet transcript)
Lisa: It may be bleak, but this music is really getting to the crowd.
Bart: Eh, making teenagers depressed is like shooting fish in a barrel.
Homer walks away, disillusioned as always.
Oh... Makes no sense. I haven't changed since high school and suddenly I'm uncool.
-- Hand Homer a mirror, "Homerpalooza"
In his rage, Homer kicks a cannon, which goes haywire. After several bursts, it shoots its bullet right into Homer's stomach. After bouncing off and falling on the ground, the bullet breaks open, revealing an inflatable pig, which soars in the sky.
Tech: Aw, man. There goes Peter Frampton's big finale. He's gonna be pissed off.
Frampton: You're damn right I'm going to be pissed off; I bought that pig at Pink Floyd's yard sale!
But the crowd is more impressed with Homer's ability to withstand such a blow without any side effects. Even a manager is impressed:
Sir, I run Hullabalooza's pageant of the transmundane --the freak show, and I've been looking for a big fatso to shoot with a cannon. I'd like very much for you to be that fatso.
