Michael Jennings is a reverse engineer; for enormous sums of money, he analyzes his clients' competitors' products and designs new versions that excel above and beyond the original's features. When he finishes a job, he undergoes a memory wipe with help from his friend Shorty. The wipe is achieved by computer technology able to scan one's brain and erase whatever must be erased. This ensures that he cannot be traced back to the reverse engineering effort
The two come to realize that Jennings must have been working on the future prediction device while at Allcom, reverse engineering the details from Dekker, the ex-government scientist. When the machine starts up, the operator selects from a database the desirable target and the machine loads a related video visible on a large screen. This way, the operator can track his personal future, avoiding possibly fatal errors. Jennings, having discovered his grim fate (including his own death), took steps to try to prevent it. Using the machine, Jennings provided himself with a set of objects that would keep him out of danger without the objects having any obvious value in order to pass them through Allcom's security cordon. Jennings also managed to sabotage the device just prior to leaving Allcom, rendering it useless for Rethrick to attempt to use to track him down with it. The sabotage was made by placing a virus microchip on one of the machine's many motherboards.
Jennings and Rachel use the remaining items in the envelope to re-infiltrate Allcom. Jennings is able to repair the circuit that he had previously altered, and uses the device once more, seeing himself being shot by an FBI sniper. The two rig the system to explode and then try to escape

In the near future, Michael Jennings is a reverse engineer; he analyzes his clients' competitors' technology and recreates it, often adding improvements beyond the original specifications. To protect his clients' intellectual property and himself, Jennings undertakes a memory wipe to remove knowledge of his engineering
Jennings regains his memory three years later at the conclusion of the memory wipe, with Rethrick thanking him for a successful job. On returning home, Jennings finds that while the Allcom stock has become quite valuable, he had signed away his share near the end of his tenure. Furthermore, he finds that his personal possessions have been replaced with an envelope containing a random assortment of everyday items.
One of the stamps holds a microdot that, on enlargement, reveals several pictures taken from a machine's display showing Allcom becoming financially successful with a device that can see the future, but ultimately leading to politic strife and nuclear war.
