Gates relinquishes CEO title

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates today said he was relinquishing the mantle of chief executive officer, turning over management of the world's most highly valued company to his No. 2, Steve Ballmer.

REDMOND, Wash. - The world's richest man got a new job Thursday.
Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates handed over the reins of the world's biggest software company to his No. 2, Steve Ballmer, who will take over as chief executive officer.
Gates, 44, who has served as Microsoft's chief since its birth 25 years ago, said he was staying on as chairman and would assume the new role of "chief software architect" to hammer out the company's vision for the Internet age.

It was in 2001 that Star Trek: Enterprise debuted and I was there in Charlotte on a business trip. I remember telling the people I was there with that I wanted to watch it that night. That was several days after 9/11 I believe. I seem to recall some manager looking annoyed with me because I told them I wasn't afraid of flying. I also felt annoyed around that time, and I think another coworker was thinking the same thing, about the people that were selected to attend the Professional Developers Conference in L.A. My suspicion was that we were getting to go because the higher-leveled people didn't want to travel because they were scared. Anyway, I took note that Enterprise started off in Broken Bow, OK, a location I knew well. I realized later that Broken Bow is precisely half-way between Antlers, OK, and Ashdown, AR, which is where I was born and where I graduated high school, respectively.
Also, a later episode, when I lived in Kent, reminded me of that day as I was walking into a Renton Starbucks when I realized someone had just tried to hit me with their car and I suspected it was being video recorded.

Starbucks' 2.1 million shares were priced to start trading at $17 a share, but the stock opened $4 higher at $21, and closed at $21.50. At that price, it made Chairman Howard Schultz's 1.1 million shares worth $23.5 million.

It kept getting worse.
The horror arrived in episodic bursts of chilling disbelief, signified first by trembling floors, sharp eruptions, cracked windows. There was the actual unfathomable realization of a gaping, flaming hole in first one of the tall towers, and then the same thing all over again in its twin. There was the merciless sight of bodies helplessly tumbling out, some of them in flames.
Finally, the mighty towers themselves were reduced to nothing. Dense plumes of smoke raced through the downtown avenues, coursing between the buildings, shaped like tornadoes on their sides.
Every sound was cause for alarm. A plane appeared overhead. Was another one coming? No, it was a fighter jet. But was it friend or enemy? People scrambled for their lives, but they didn't know where to go. Should they go north, south, east, west? Stay outside, go indoors? People hid beneath cars and each other. Some contemplated jumping into the river.
For those trying to flee the very epicenter of the collapsing World Trade Center towers, the most horrid thought of all finally dawned on them: nowhere was safe.

Whoever is indicted for treason or other capital crime shall be allowed to make his full defense by counsel; and the court before which the defendant is to be tried, or a judge thereof, shall promptly, upon the defendant’s request, assign 2 such counsel, of whom at least 1 shall be learned in the law applicable to capital cases, and who shall have free access to the accused at all reasonable hours. The police said that the raid was executed in order to question Davis about the killing of four suspected drug dealers. At trial, Davis's defense attorneys claimed that the raid was staged to murder him because of his knowledge of the involvement of corrupt police in the drug business. With the help of family contacts and street friends, he eluded capture for the next 17 days despite a massive manhunt.

The chronicle of Larry Davis was over on Thursday. Stabbed repeatedly in his arms, head, back, legs and chest by another inmate wielding a nine-inch shank, he fell in the yard of an upstate prison, and thereupon hangs the strange tale of a notorious killer, the antihero of another era of New York City.
He was nobody, really, back in the 1980s, just a high school dropout in the Bronx, a short, burly black kid with Mike Tyson muscles who made a living with drugs and guns and fear. But on the freezing night of Nov. 19, 1986, wanted in the killings of drug dealers, he shot six white police officers who tried to arrest him in a Bronx apartment, then slipped out a window and past a huge cordon of officers outside.
During the next 17 days, as he moved among hide-outs while an enormous manhunt captivated the city, the fugitive came to embody the city’s profound frustrations over crime and racism — a vicious outlaw to the police and their supporters, an avenging angel to many black people who, though deploring his violence, regarded the Police Department as infected with rogues and racists.
Finally, the gunman was captured in a housing project just a mile from the shootout. He was down to his last few dollars and a couple of Tootsie Rolls. And as he was led out, smiling, in manacles, tenants who had lain low during an all-night police siege threw open their windows and erupted into cheers: “Lar-ry! Lar-ry!”
Mr. Davis had become a folk hero to many New Yorkers. “He was a symbol of resistance in a dangerous and racially polarized city where white cops could — and did — kill black people with impunity,” Ronald Kuby, a civil rights lawyer who once helped to defend him, said on Thursday.

United Airlines Flight 232 was a scheduled flight from Stapleton International Airport in Denver, Colorado, to O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, with continuing service to Philadelphia International Airport. On July 19, 1989, the DC-10 (Registration N1819U) operating the route crash-landed in Sioux City, Iowa, after suffering catastrophic failure of its tail-mounted engine, which led to the loss of all flight controls. 111 people died in the accident
The crew guided the crippled jet to Sioux Gateway Airport and lined it up for landing on one of the runways. However, without flight controls, they were unable to slow down for landing, and were forced to attempt landing at much too high a speed and rate of descent. On touchdown, the aircraft broke apart, caught fire, and rolled over. The largest section came to rest in a cornfield next to the runway.
On final descent, the aircraft was going 240 knots and sinking at 1,850 feet per minute, while a safe landing would require 140 knots and 300 feet per minute. Fitch needed a seat for landing; Dvorak offered up his own, as it could be moved to a position behind the throttles. Dvorak sat in the cockpit's jumpseat for landing. Unfortunately, right before touchdown, the aircraft began a downward phugoid and veered right. The flight crew had no time to react. The tip of the right wing hit the runway first, spilling fuel, which ignited immediately. The tail section broke off from the force of the impact, and the rest of the aircraft bounced several times, shedding the landing gear and engine nacelles and breaking the fuselage into several main pieces. On the final impact the right wing was sheared off and the main part of the aircraft skidded sideways, rolled over on to its back, and slid to a stop upside-down in a corn field to the right of Runway 22. Witnesses reported that the aircraft cartwheeled, but the investigation did not confirm this. News reports that the aircraft cartwheeled were due to misinterpretation of the video of the crash that showed the flaming right wing tumbling end-over-end and the intact left wing, still attached to the fuselage, rolling up and over as the fuselage flipped over.
Of the 296 people on board, 111 died in the crash. Most were killed by injuries sustained in the multiple impacts, but 35 people in the middle fuselage section directly above the fuel tanks died from smoke inhalation in the post-crash fire.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - The missile cruiser USS Princeton, badly damaged by a mine in the northern Persian Gulf, has been pulled out of action and sent to a gulf port for assessment, U.S. military officials said today.
Discussing the mine blasts that damaged the U.S. warships, he said what was apparently an unusually sophisticated mine damaged the rudder and rudder shaft of the billion-dollar Princeton. The blast injured three crewmen and lifted the vessel party out of the water.
The USS Tripoli, meanwhile, remained on duty after patching a 16-by-20-foot hole in its hull blown by a cruder mine 2 1/2 hours earlier and 10 miles away.
Neal said no minesweepers had cleared the area where the explosions occurred because it was believed to have been relatively free of mines. He said the allies would "continue an aggressive countermine campaign."
The two explosions appeared to jeopardize any plans for an amphibious landing by the Marine task force positioned off the Kuwait coast - at least in the area where the ships were operating.
The Tripoli, an 18,000-ton helicopter assault carrier, is serving as flagship for a newly mounted mine-clearing operation in the area. The 2-year-old Princeton had been on anti-aircraft surveillance duty.
There were varying reports on the extent of damage to the 570-foot Princeton.
Military officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there was one report that the hull was damaged in the middle, with cracks in the superstructure above the main deck.
They did not say to which gulf port the Princeton had headed for repairs.
A dozen mine sweepers from the U.S., Saudi and European navies are at work to clear out the thousands of mines the Iraqis are believed to have sown in coastal waters to deter any landing by the 15,000 Marines stationed aboard about 30 ships in the gulf.
The Marines are prepared to strike at Kuwaiti beaches by helicopter and assault boat as part of the anticipated ground offensive.
U.S. officials, however, were worried by the explosions, especially because the Princeton appeared to have been damaged by a so-called "influence mine" - a device the Iraqis were known to possess but had never before used.

The Battle of Mogadishu (also referred to as the Battle of the Black Sea, and Black Hawk Down in popular culture) or for Somalis: the Day of the Rangers (Somali: Maalintii Rangers) was part of Operation Gothic Serpent and was fought on October 3 and 4, 1993, in Mogadishu, Somalia, between forces of the United States supported by UNOSOM II and Somali militia fighters loyal to president to be Mohamed Farrah Aidid who had support from armed civilian fighters.
On October 3, 1993, Task Force Ranger, U.S. Special Operations Forces composed mainly of Bravo Company 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (better known as “Delta Force”) operators, and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) (“The Night Stalkers”), attempted to capture Aidid's foreign minister Omar Salad Elmi and his top political advisor, Mohamed Hassan Awale.
The plan was that Delta Force operators would assault the target building (using MH-6 Little Bird helicopters) and secure the targets inside the building while four Ranger chalks (under the command of Capt. Michael D. Steele) would fast rope down from hovering MH-60L Black Hawk helicopters. The Rangers would then create a four-corner defensive perimeter around the target building while a column of nine Humvees and three five-ton trucks (under the command of Lt. Col. Danny McKnight) would arrive at the target building to take the entire assault team and their prisoners back to base. The entire operation was estimated to take no longer than 30 minutes.
The ground-extraction convoy was supposed to reach the captive targets a few minutes after the beginning of the operation. However, it ran into delays. Somali citizens and local militia formed barricades along the streets of Mogadishu with rocks and burning tires, blocking the convoy from reaching the Rangers and their captives. Aidid militiamen with megaphones shouting, "Kasoobaxa guryaha oo iska celsa cadowga!" ("Come out and defend your homes!").

Professor David Pollock is an expert in ancient Arabic hieroglyphics. A Middle Eastern Prime Minister convinces Pollock to infiltrate the organization of a man named Beshraavi, who is involved in a plot against the Prime Minister. The nature of the plot is believed to be found in a hieroglyphic code. Beshraavi's mistress, Yasmin Azir is a mystery intertwined in the plot. Pollock needs her help, but when she repeatedly seems to double cross him in one escapade after another, he can't decide on whose side she is working. Ultimately working together, Pollock and Yasmin decipher the plot and set out to stop an assassination of the Prime Minister.

The chapter-crunched version of this 196 minutes, 12-episode serial from Republic finds Canada being bombed mercilessly by a mysterious-enemy plane (shaped like a boomerang) called the Falcon, under the supervision of Admiral Yamata, Count Baroni and Marshal von Horst, chiefs of the Axis Fifth Column in Canada. No one can identify the plane until American inventor, Professor Marshall Brent, and his daughter Carol arrive with a new type of airplane detector. This poses a threat to the Axis chiefs in preparing western Canada for an invasion and they have him kidnapped by local Quisling Gil Harper. RCMP Sergeant Tom King attempts to rescue Brent, but the inventor is killed when a plane in which he is held captive crashes into a riverboat. Carol, determined to carry on her father's work and with King's aid, manages to prevent the enemy agents from capturing the detector, and destroys the device (many chapters later) when the agents make a last desperate attack on the cabin where it is hidden. She is captured and taken to the crater of a volcano, where the ring makes its headquarters.

History
The US Maritime Commission was created as an independent agency by the Merchant Marine Act of 29 June 1936, to further develop and maintain a merchant marine for the promotion of US commerce and defense. It was authorized to regulate US ocean commerce, supervise freight and terminal facilities, and administer Government funds to construct and operate commercial ships.
The Commission was the successor agency of the US Shipping Board and the US Shipping Board Bureau of the Department of Commerce. It also took over the property and records of the US Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation, known as the US Shipping Board Merchant Fleet Corporation, after 1927. When the War Shipping Administration was established in 1942, it took over many functions of the Commission, including the operation of the merchant marine and the shipbuilding activity remained under the Commission. These functions were returned to the Commission after 1 September 1946.
The Commission was abolished on 24 May 1950, and its functions were transferred to the Department of Commerce where they were assigned to the Federal Maritime Board and the Maritime Administration (MARAD).
The Maritime Administration was established by Reorganization Plan No. 21, effective 24 May 1950, as one of the successor agencies to the US Maritime Commission. It administers financial programs to develop, promote, and operate the US Merchant Marine; determines services and routes necessary to develop and maintain American foreign commerce and requirements of ships necessary to provide adequate service on such routes; conducts research and development activities in the maritime field; regulates the transfer of US documented vessels to foreign registries; maintains equipment, shipyard facilities, and reserve fleets of Government-owned ships essential for national defense; operates the US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY; and administers a Grant-In-Aid Program for State operated maritime academies in California, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, and Texas.
