This Is What I Think.

Sunday, August 05, 2012

My campaign for reelection as class president. An experienced president, I shouted.

All this time I have been thinking we graduated on the 12th. But that wasn't correct. The 12th was a Saturday.

I arrived in Orlando Florida on the night of Monday the 14th for induction into United States Navy basic training for enlisted personnel.

#8 My opponent's youth and inexperience

"I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent's youth and inexperience."

October 21, 1984: In the second presidential debate with candidate Walter Mondale, Reagan was grilled over his age by Henry "Hank" Trewhitt of the Baltimore Sun. "You already are the oldest President in history, and some of your staff say you were tired after your most recent encounter with Mr. Mondale. I recall, yes, that President Kennedy, who had to go for days on end with very little sleep during the Cuba missile crisis. Is there any doubt in your mind that you would be able to function in such circumstances?" Reagan replied, "Not at all, Mr. Trewhitt and I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience." Trewhitt responded, "Mr. President, I'd like to head for the fence and try to catch that one before it goes over."

This reference to the Great Salt Desert, the staging area for the rescue attempt, reminds me of that memory on the Taylor. There was a problem with the fresh water machines and we couldn't wash clothes for a while. As I was standing lookout on the bridge at least once a day, my clothes were filthy from evaporated salt water.

I was thinking last night about a memory featured prominently in my symbolic memory. It is of a time in 1985 when I was on the Taylor. It was during that same deployment when I watched the Estocin run aground in Key West. We were traveling along shoulder to shoulder with a Soviet battlegroup that was touring the oil pltform fields off the coast of Texas and Louisiana. During that time, I still worked for the Boatswain's Mates

The part of this memory that seems to be operative is that I remember thinking several times that I turned 20 years old in "the Gulf."

A U.S. Navy vessel is closely monitoring the movements of two Soviet warships that entered the Gulf of Mexico and came within 40 miles of the Texas coast, the U.S. Navy said.

The USS Taylor, American guidedmissile frigate, has been tracking the Soviet ships - a guided-missile destroyer and a guided-missile frigate - since they left Havana Thursday, said Lt. Cmdr. Craig Quigley, a Navy spokesman in Norfolk, Va.

The Taylor is always "within visual range" of the Soviet vessels that were last reported about 100 miles southwest of Tampa, Fla., and moving in a southeasterly direction, possibly toward Cuba, said Quigley.

#6 We begin bombing in five minutes

"My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you today that I've signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes."

August 11, 1984: Reagan was getting ready for a 9 a.m. live broadcast from his ranch, Rancho del Cielo, near Santa Barbara, Calif. He joked around with the National Public Radio audio engineers during the microphone check before the broadcast, and said, "My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you today that I've signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes." The comments were not broadcast, but unbelievably, during an election year no less, somehow, as hard as it may be to fathom, somebody, maybe even from NPR, leaked a recording of the joke to the public.

Russia was not amused.

Red Storm Rising

The Tomcats divided into four-plane divisions, each controlled by radar. They, too, had been briefed about the drones that had fooled Nimitz. The fighters kept their radars off until they were within fifty miles of their targets, then used the radars to locate targets for their on-board TV systems.

"Hawk-Blue-Four," one called. "Tallyho, I got eyeballs on a Backfire. Engaging now. Out."

The Russian plan of attack had anticipated that the American fighters would try to bum through the jamming aircraft to the north, then be caught off balance by the appearance of the Backfires to the east. But the jammers were gone, and the Backfires did not yet have the American carrier fleet on radar and could not launch their missiles on the basis of hours-old satellite photographs. Neither could they run away. The supersonic Russian bombers went to afterburner and activated their radars in a contest with time, distance, and American interceptors.

Again it was like watching a video game. The symbols designating the Backfires changed as the planes switched on their own protective jammers. The jamming reduced the effectiveness of the Phoenix missiles, but Russian losses were already serious. The Backfires were three hundred miles away. Their radars had an effective range of only half that, and already fighters swarmed over their formations. "Tallyho" calls cluttered the radio circuits as the Tomcats converged to engage the Russian bombers, and the ^ symbols started dropping off the radar screens. The Backfires closed at seventeen miles per minute, their radars searching desperately for the American fleet.

"Going to get some leakers," Toland said.

"Six or eight," Jacobsen agreed.

"Figure three missiles each."

By now the Tomcats had fired all of their missiles, and drew off for the Hornets to join the action with Sparrows and Sidewinders. It wasn't easy for the fighters to keep up with their targets. The Backfires, speed made for difficult pursuit curves, and the fighters were notoriously short on fuel. Their missiles continued to score, however, and no amount of jinking and jamming could defeat all of them. Finally one aircraft got a surface radar contact and radioed a position. The seven remaining Backfires fired their missiles and turned north at Mach 2. Three more fell to missiles before the fighters had to turn away.

Again the Vampire call came in, and again Toland cringed. Twenty incoming missiles were plotted. The formation activated jammers and SAM systems, with a pair of Aegis cruisers on the threat axis. In seconds they were launching missiles, and the other SM2-equipped SAM ships added their own missiles to the "basket," allowing their birds to be guided by the Aegis computer systems. The twenty incoming missiles had ninety SM2s targeted on them. Only three got through the SAM cloud, and only one of them headed for a carrier. America's three point-defense guns tracked the AS-6 and destroyed it a thousand feet from the ship. The other two missiles both found the cruiser Wainwright and exploded her four miles from Independence.

"Damn." Jacobsen's face took a hard set. "I thought we had that one beat. Let's start recovering aircraft. We got some dry fighters up there."

Challenger explodes/Shuttle falls into ocean; crew apparently killed

By CARLOS BYARS, Houston Chronicle Science Writer

Staff

Mission specialist Onizuka's first name is spelled Ellison

The space shuttle Challenger exploded in a huge ball of red and yellow flame today and fell in blazing pieces into the Atlantic Ocean, apparently killing the seven astronauts aboard, including schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe.

The explosion on the $1.2 billion shuttle came at one minute, 15 seconds after launch when the shuttle was about 11 miles high and 9 miles down range from Kennedy Space Center.

Out of the flame of the descending shuttle came objects still belching white smoke. They were apparently the solid fuel boosters still firing. Huge chunks of the shuttle could be seen falling into the water followed by billowing smoke.

NASA made no announcement concerning the fate of the seven crew members, including McAuliffe, the 37-year-old schoolteacher from New Hampshire, the first civilian to be selected for a shuttle crew. The agency also did not offer any early theory or explanation of the cause of the explosion.

Observers said it was unlikely that anyone aboard survived.

There have been no fatalities in 55 previous manned U.S. space missions. Today's explosion, however, occurred 19 years and one day after three astronauts were killed on Jan. 27, 1967, in an explosion on the launch pad in the Apollo space program.

Challenger exploded before the horrified eyes of spectators at the Florida space center.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STS-51-L

STS-51-L

STS-51-L was the twenty-fifth flight of the American Space Shuttle program, which marked the first time a civilian had flown aboard the Space Shuttle. The mission used Space Shuttle Challenger, which lifted off from Launch Complex 39-B on January 28, 1986 from Kennedy Space Center, Florida.

The mission ended in disaster following the destruction of Challenger 73 seconds after lift-off because of the failure of an O-ring seal on Challenger's right Solid Rocket Booster (SRB). The failure of the seal allowed a flamethrower-like flare to impinge upon one of two aft SRB attach struts, which eventually failed, freeing the booster to pivot about its remaining attachment points. Subsequently, the forward part of the booster cylinder impacted the external tank (ET) intertank area, leading to a structural failure of the ET—the core structural component of the entire stack. A rapid burning of liberated propellants ensued. With the structural "backbone" of the stack compromised and breaking up, the SRBs flew off on their own, as did the orbiter, rapidly disintegrating due to the overwhelming aerodynamic forces. Evidence found in the remnants of the crew cabin showed that several of the emergency air supplies (PEAPs) carried by the astronauts had been manually activated, suggesting that the forces during breakup of the orbiter were not inherently fatal and that at least three crew members were alive after the craft broke up.

Soviet warships being watched in Gulf

Houston Chronicle News Services

TUE 11/05/1985 HOUSTON CHRONICLE

However, there was no way to determine whether the Soviet warships were preparing to leave the Gulf and return to Havana. "They can always change rudder at a moment's notice," he said.

The destroyer and frigate - part of a larger group of four Soviet ships that entered the Caribbean in September - entered the Gulf Thursday, Quigley said. The vessels always remained within international waters, he said.

The Navy took pictures of the two Soviet ships Saturday when a P-3 maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft flew over the ships about 40 miles southeast of the Houston-Galveston area.

"That's international waters," Quigley said. "They've never come closer than 20 miles to our shore."

Quigley, noting it was not unique for Soviet vessels visiting the Caribbean to enter the Gulf, said it was the 25th such deployment of Soviet warships to the Caribbean since 1969.
