Curiosity enough for $2.5B Mars mission?

LOS ANGELES — Saturn has its famous rings and Jupiter is the granddaddy of the solar system, but no planet has entranced earthlings quite like Mars.
Humans have launched 40 spacecraft to the Red Planet, lured by the prospect that life once might have existed in what is now dry rocks and sand. The latest machine to make the journey is NASA's Mars Science Laboratory, a hulking, souped-up lab-on-wheels that will plunge toward the Martian surface late Sunday.
As the excitement builds, some wonder: Is Mars exploration a good investment?
It doesn't come cheap. It's hard to calculate a total price tag, but over the 48 years NASA has been launching missions to Mars, Americans have spent a significant sum. The Viking missions alone cost nearly $1 billion in 1970s dollars. The twin rovers Spirit and Opportunity cost a total of about $1 billion to build and operate.
Curiosity, as the Mars Science Laboratory rover is known, is over budget at $2.5 billion.

Nasa's Phoenix Mars lander successfully touched down on the planet's surface early today on a mission that could yield evidence of primitive life amid the permafrost.
Jubilant mission controllers described landing the £212m probe as like scoring a hole in one at golf if you "tee off in Washington and the hole is in Sydney – and moving".
Less than two hours after landing, the Nasa spacecraft beamed back four dozen black and white images, including one of its foot sitting on Martian soil amid tiny rocks.
Others included the horizon of the arctic plain and ground with polygon patterns similar to those found in Earth's permafrost regions.
"Absolutely beautiful," Dan McCleese, a chief scientist at Nasa's jet propulsion laboratory, said. "It looks like a good place to start digging."
The final minutes of the 10-month, 420m-mile journey were nailbiting as the lander plummeted through the thin Martian atmosphere.
It used a heat shield, parachutes and jet thrusters to slow its descent from an entry speed of 13,000mph to only 5mph on landing in what Nasa described as "seven minutes of terror".
Cheers swept through mission control in Pasadena, California, when the touchdown signal was detected.

Gunman kills 12 in Colorado theater shooting
Those posts surfaced before the shootings early Friday morning at a late-night showing in Aurora, Colorado, of the Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises," in which 12 people were killed and dozens more were injured. All three people who were quoted above appear to have been in the theater complex when a heavily armed gunman opened fire on moviegoers, according to police.

A glitch in the Mars Odyssey orbiter may add additional drama to the "seven minutes of terror" expected as the Mars Science Laboratory rover, aka Curiosity, lands on the red planet next month, NASA scientists announced Monday.

Those seven minutes are the time it should take the vehicle to descend from the top of the Martian atmosphere to the surface, braking all the way.
"We go from 13,000 miles [21,000 kilometers] per hour to zero is seven minutes," Doug McCuistion, director of NASA's Mars Exploration Program, said at a press conference at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

A giant space probe is set to plunge into the atmosphere of Mars at a speed of more than 13,000mph in a few weeks' time. For the following seven minutes, its onboard computer will issue electronic instructions to direct the craft through manoeuvres of unprecedented complexity to guide it to the ground. Atmospheric friction and later a giant parachute will cut its speed to a few hundred miles per hour. Then rocket engines will fire and the probe will slow down until it hovers about 20 metres above the surface of the Red Planet.
The spaceship's hold will open and a one-tonne robot rover, Curiosity, will be lowered – on three nylon cables – on to the surface of the Gale Crater, near the Martian equator, the craft's target landing site.
After two seconds, explosive bolts will cut the cables and the probe will be instructed to give a final blast of its engines to lift itself clear of Curiosity and to crash land at a safe distance. The rover, the size of a small car, will then start its journey over the Martian landscape
It is an intensely delicate operation. Should any part of the landing sequence go wrong, $2.5bn worth of hardware, and a decade of effort by astronomers, will be splattered over the Martian landscape. "We will get seven minutes to descend from the top of the atmosphere to the surface, to go from 13,000mph to zero, in perfect sequence, perfect choreography, perfect timing, with the computer operating all by itself," said Nasa engineer Tom Rivellini. "If any one thing does not work out right, it is game over." Hence the Curiosity team's nickname for its descent: the seven-minutes of terror.

A rover of "monster truck" proportions zoomed toward Mars on an 8 1/2-month, 354 million-mile journey Saturday, the biggest, best equipped robot ever sent to explore another planet.
NASA's six-wheeled, one-armed wonder, Curiosity, will reach Mars next summer and use its jackhammer drill, rock-zapping laser machine and other devices to search for evidence that Earth's next-door neighbor might once have been home to the teeniest forms of life.
More than 13,000 invited guests jammed the Kennedy Space Center on Saturday morning to witness NASA's first launch to Mars in four years, and the first flight of a Martian rover in eight years.
Mars fever gripped the crowd.

Updated Friday 9:25 p.m. ET: James Eagan Holmes, suspected of carrying out the Colorado movie theater shooting while wearing an outfit of black ballistic gear, was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate student in neuroscience who started buying his four weapons legally in May, about the time his grades fell and he began the process of dropping out of school.
Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said Holmes, born Dec. 13, 1987, is the man who is believed to have killed at least 12 people early Friday at a midnight showing of the new Batman movie in Aurora, a suburb of Denver. At least 58 other people were injured, nearly all of them by bullets but a few in other ways in the chaos, Oates said.

DIRECTING THE FEDERAL WORKS ADMINISTRATOR TO TAKE POSSESSION OF AND OPERATE A CERTAIN PROJECT OF THE GRAND RIVER DAM AUTHORITY
November 19, 1941
WHEREAS Grand River Dam Authority of Vinita, Oklahoma, is the holder of a license (Project No. 1494) under the Federal Power Act (41 Stat. 1063) and is constructing, maintaining and operating a project (as defined in said Act) under such license in the State of Oklahoma; and
WHEREAS, in my opinion, the safety of the United States demands that the United States enter upon and take possession of such project for the purposes and time, and upon the conditions hereinafter stated; and
WHEREAS I have, simultaneously with this order, issued an order addressed to Grand River Dam Authority, reading as follows:
'TO: GRAND RIVER DAM AUTHORITY, VINITA, OKLAHOMA
'Pursuant to section 16 of the Federal Power Act, I hereby order and direct that the project now being constructed, maintained, and operated by you in the State of Oklahoma under a license (Project No. 1494) held by you under the Federal Power Act, be surrendered to, and entered upon, taken possession of, managed, and operated by the Federal Works Administrator, acting for and on behalf of the United States, through such person or persons as he may designate, for the reasons, the purposes, and the time, and upon the conditions set forth in the Executive Order issued by me simultaneously with this order, a copy of which Executive Order is attached as a part of this order.'
NOW, THEREFORE, by virtue of the power vested in me by the Constitution and the statutes of the United States, and particularly by section 16 of the Federal Power Act, it is hereby ordered as follows:

The Federal Works Administrator, acting for and on behalf of the United States, through such person or persons as he may designate, is hereby authorized and directed immediately to enter upon, and take possession of, manage, and operate, the project above mentioned for the purpose of generating and supplying power for the manufacture of explosives or munitions of war or otherwise necessary to the safety and defense of the United States, and for other purposes involving the safety of the United States.
