Gary Leon Ridgway today admitted to being the Green River Killer, responsible for the deaths of 48 young women in the longest serial murder investigation in U.S. history.
"I killed so many women I have a hard time keeping them straight," he said in a statement read by Deputy Prosecutor Jeff Baird.
"My plan was I wanted to kill as many women I thought were prostitutes as I possibly could," he said. "I picked prostitutes as my victims because I hate most prostitutes and I did not want to pay them for sex. I also picked prostitutes for victims because they were easy to pick up without being noticed."
Ridgway's deal to plead guilty to 48 counts of aggravated first-degree murder means he will be spared from execution. He now faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. A sentencing date has not been set.
Some relatives of the Green River Killer's victims wept quietly in the King County courtroom as one by one, Ridgway calmly admitted killing each woman and dumping their bodies off county roads, in rural areas and in the river that gave the case its name.
"In most cases when I murdered these women I did not know their names," he said.
Investigators once pegged the Green River Killer's murderous frenzy as lasting from 1982 to 1984. They now know Ridgway's violent streak started long before that - and continued long after.
In his statement read in court today, Ridgway said he thought the fact that his murder victims were prostitutes might enable him to avoid capture.
"Most of the time I killed them the first time that I met them and I do not have a good memory for their faces," he said.
He said he thought he could "kill as many of them as I wanted without getting caught." He also said he took jewelry and clothes to get rid of evidence.
"I killed most of them in my house hear Military Road and I killed a lot of them in my truck not far from where I picked them up. ... I remember leaving each woman's body in the place where she was found."
A more-than-80-page court document related to the case describes how Ridgway had sex with his dead victims.
"I placed most of the bodies in groups which I call clusters," he said. "I liked to drive by the clusters and think about the women I placed there."
He also said he usually "used a landmark to remember a cluster and the women I placed there," but on occasion abandoned a potential cluster because of a perceived risk associated with the site he chose.
The portion of the prepared statement that dealt with the specific killings began, "I strangled Wendy Lee Coffield to death." It went on to the death of Debra Lynn Bonner, Marcia Faye Chapman, Cynthia Jean Hinds and through the four dozen names -- some still unidentified and listed as "Jane Doe, B-10" or "Jane Doe, B-16."
After Baird read the description of each death - most including the phrase, "I picked her up planning to kill her" - he asked Ridgway whether it was his true statement. Ridgway answered, "Yes, it is."
When all was said and done, he had been convicted of more murders than any serial killer in the nation's history.
In an overflow room outside the courtroom where the proceeding were broadcast on closed circuit TV, most of the 60 people watching sat attentively and quietly until Baird began reading the statement describing the killings.
At that point, some of the victims' family and friends, as well as some reporters, began sobbing.
Ridgway's guilty pleas are part of a deal that will spare him from execution in the King County cases. No deal was cut that might spare him from death penalties in other jurisdictions. Remains of some victims were found outside the county and in Oregon.

On the day that a judge set an earlier-than-expected sentencing date for Gary Ridgway, the Green River Killer's wife was heard publicly for the first time in newly released police documents.
King County detectives interviewed Judith Ridgway on Nov. 30, 2001, just as the news broke that her husband of 13 years had been arrested.
"No I don't believe that," she told a detective who asked her whether her husband might have had sex with women who are Green River victims. "He's always been so, so gentle and caring and ...."
And she promised to testify for him in court. "I would tell 'em everything is good about him."
But she has yet to have that chance. Ridgway pleaded guilty this month to the murders of 48 women and girls, many of them killed in the early 1980s, in a plea deal that spared him from execution. He strangled the victims, many of them runaways and prostitutes, and discarded a few of their bodies along the Green River in Kent.
A judge is expected to sentence Ridgway to 48 life terms in prison Dec. 18, a date months sooner than expected and one that will give relatives of the serial murder victims a chance to express their loss in a courtroom.
Ridgway is continuing to cooperate with King County sheriff's detectives, who are looking for leads in the county's unsolved slayings but have become convinced that the serial killer has given as much information as he's going to give.
"Granted, he has said that he may be responsible for a number of other homicides, but he doesn't remember names. He doesn't remember faces," said Detective Kathleen Larson, spokeswoman for the Green River Task Force. "That's been a problem all along."

Fourteen year-old Peter Fanning (fictitious name) of Provo, Utah, made a surprising discovery. Lying in front of him, beside a steel culvert, was what he thought might be a parachute pack. He brought the strange object to his father who was replacing a flat tire on the family car a short distance away. The father notified the local sheriff of their find after returning home that afternoon.
It was soon learned that the Fannings had stumbled upon one of the four parachutes furnished to a lone gunman who had commandeered a passenger plane on April 7, 1972, in the Colorado skies.
United Airlines Flight 855, a Boeing 727 en route from Newark, New Jersey, to Los Angeles, California, with 85 passengers and a crew of six, had resumed flight after a Denver, Colorado, stopover.
Approximately 20 minutes after takeoff, at 5:18 p.m., a male passenger was observed in his seat holding a hand grenade.
A stewardess, notified of the situation, immediately advised the captain. An off-duty pilot known to be on board as a passenger was requested to discreetly walk around and assess the situation only to have the person in question draw a pistol as he approached. The gunman handed over a sealed envelope, labeled "hijack instructions," and stated, "give this envelope to the girl and have her take it to the captain." A stewardess complied, and the off-duty pilot returned to his seat.
The stream of events had transpired so quickly that most passengers were unaware of the threat. Captain William Olinsky (fictitious name) discussed the matter with some crew members and decided to land at nearby Grand Junction, Colorado, where he would radio for law enforcement assistance on the ground. Olinsky then announced over the public address system that the aircraft was experiencing a "minor mechanical problem" and would land shortly.
The envelope with the hijack instructions was then opened by the captain. Inside were two typed pages of highly detailed directions, a hand grenade pin, and a bullet. The "instructions" required Olinsky to land at San Francisco International Airport, and park at "Runway 19 left." There, he was to follow certain procedures which designated the number of persons allowed near the plane at one time, and the distance from the aircraft that all vehicles other than those containing fuel were to be kept. In addition, the hijacker demanded $500,000 in cash, four parachutes, and the return of all written or typed directions given during the course of the flight.
After the aircraft passed over the last Utah community on his prescribed course, the hijacker sent no more notes. Hoping the incident was over, a stewardess ventured into the passenger area and determined that the gunman had indeed bailed out with the ransom into Utah's darkened skies.
