For a minute Larry thought he was going to puke. He goggled silently at Wayne. He tried to speak and he could only mouth: Ninety-two hundred?
“Inflation, man,” Wayne said. “You want the rest?”
Larry didn’t want the rest, but he nodded.
“There was a color TV upstairs. Someone ran a chair through it. I’d guess three hundred for repairs. The wood paneling downstairs has been gouged to hell. Four hundred. With luck. The picture window facing the beach got broken the day before yesterday. Three hundred. The shag rug in the living room is totally kaput—cigarette burns, beer, whiskey. Four hundred. I called the liquor store and they’re just as happy with their tab as the Deck is with his. Six hundred.”
“Six hundred for booze?” Larry whispered. Blue horror had encased him up to the neck.
“Be thankful most of them have been scoffing beer and wine. You’ve got a four-hundred-dollar tab down at the market, mostly for pizza, chips, tacos, all that good shit. But the worst is the noise. Pretty soon the cops are going to land. Les flics. Disturbing the peace. And you’ve got four or five heavies doing up on heroin. There’s three or four ounces of Mexican brown in the place.”
“Is that on my tab, too?” Larry asked hoarsely.
“No. The Deck doesn’t mess with heroin. That’s an Organization item and the Deck doesn’t like the idea of cement cowboy boots. But if the cops land, you can bet the bust will go on your tab.”

An American shuttle docked with a Russian space station high over Earth Thursday, and their commanders clasped hands joyously in an extraordinary sharing of technical skills between two former rivals.
A 3-foot-long tunnel connected the ships, which together formed the largest manmade satellite ever put in space.Two hours after the ships mated, Robert "Hoot" Gibson of Atlantis and Vladimir Dezhurov of Mir met in the tunnel and shook hands. One after the other, the Atlantis astronauts floated into the Mir for a televised gathering and exchange of symbolic gifts.
It was an especially emotional reunion for American astronaut Norman Thagard, who has been on the Mir for 105 days, and Dr. Bonnie Dunbar from Atlantis. The two trained together with the Russians.
It was only the second time ships from two countries joined up in space: The first was 20 years ago between an American Apollo capsule and a Soviet Soyuz.
The Atlantis crew of seven included a fresh pair of cosmonauts for the Russian Mir, whose three crewmen looked forward to returning to Earth next week aboard the shuttle.
The two spacecraft were 245 miles over Central Asia near the Russian-Mongolian border when Gibson eased the Atlantis' and Mir's mating devices into first contact.
"We have capture," said Gibson, precisely on time at 7 a.m. MDT. The Mir commander gave a similar message to his home base.
Both ships had crews from both countries - along with two Russians on the Mir was Thagard. As a result, the space-to-ground connections to flight controllers in Houston and Kaliningrad crackled in English and Russian. The Mir also broke the tension by playing lively Russian folk songs.
The Mir was the passive partner in the union; its only task was to stay at the proper attitude, and it did.

On Feb. 13, as controversy swirled around President Bush’s service in the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam War, the White House released more than 400 pages of documents on the press corps, proving, it claimed, that Bush had served honorably and fulfilled his commitment. The sudden rush of records, often redundant, jumbled and out of chronological order, generally left reporters baffled. From Bush’s point of view, the document dump was a political success, as the controversy cooled and the paper trail ran dry.
In retrospect, it’s doubtful that even White House aides understood all the information embedded in the records, specifically the payroll documents. It’s also unlikely they realized how damaging the information could be when read in the proper context. Seven months later, the document dump is coming back to haunt the White House, thanks to researcher Paul Lukasiak, who has spent that time closely examining the paperwork, and more important, analyzing U.S. statutory law, Department of Defense regulations, and Air Force policies and procedures of the 1960s and 1970s. As a result, Lukasiak arrived at the overwhelming conclusion that not only did Bush walk away from his final two years of military obligation, coming dangerously close to desertion, but he attempted to cover up his absenteeism through swindle and fraud.
Lukasiak’s findings, detailed on his Web site the AWOL Project, have since been bolstered and augmented by independent research by the Boston Globe and the Associated Press. On Wednesday, CBS News reported what may be among the most damaging details yet: that Bush’s squadron commander, the late Col. Jerry Killian, complained he was being pressured by higher-ups to give Bush a favorable evaluation after he suspended him from flying for failure to take his annual physical exam. Titled “CYA,” Killian’s memo concluded, “I’m having trouble running interference and doing my job.”
But for the last several months, Lukasiak has practically had the AWOL story to himself, as the mainstream media mostly seemed silenced by the big February document release, the daunting task of decoding military personnel records, and the repeated refrain from the Bush White House that the president was honorably discharged. Among the three most compelling conclusions reached by Lukasiak in his new, meticulous research, are:
Bush’s request to transfer to an Alabama Guard unit in 1972, in order to work on the Senate campaign of a family friend, Lukasiak found, was not designed to be temporary, but rather was Bush’s attempt to sever ties completely with the Texas Air National Guard and find a new, permanent unit in Alabama for which he was ineligible, where he wouldn’t have to do any training during his final two years. His superiors in Texas essentially covered for Bush’s getaway. However, the Air Reserve Personnel Center (ARPC) in Denver, Colo., which had final say, uncovered the attempted scam, put an end to it, and admonished Bush’s superiors for endorsing Bush’s bogus request. (The CBS News report shows that the locals were chafing at interference from “higher-ups” presumably connected to the powerful Bush family.) In the interim, Bush simply ignored his weekend duties for nearly six straight months, not bothering to show up at military units in either Alabama or Texas.

TOKYO — President Bush canceled his appearances this morning during trade talks here after collapsing Wednesday night at an official dinner with what the White House said was a bout with stomach flu.
White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said the President was still weak but feeling better and would resume his busy schedule later today. "The doctors are certain that there is no other illness or problems related to this," he said. "The President is human. He gets sick."
Bush's illness raised new concerns about the President's health as his rigorous reelection campaign begins.
The chilling spectacle at the head table of a banquet at the prime minister's residence here was captured on television cameras as Bush vomited and slumped limply to the floor, mouth agape. Fitzwater said the President had fainted.
Bush, somewhat sheepish-looking, rose to his feet five minutes later but appeared pale and disheveled as he was rushed back to his temporary residence at the Akasaka Palace under the care of his physician.
The incident created a temporary panic at the elegant dinner, where witnesses said Bush's eyelids seemed to flutter as he was stricken. Secret Service agent George Robinson clambered across a table to him and Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa briefly cradled the President's head in his hands. First Lady Barbara Bush at one point left her seat to look on from her husband's side, and agents took protective positions around the room to keep other guests away.
But as Bush eventually rose to face the audience, his jacket removed and tie loosened, Miyazawa led vigorous applause and the President was said to have remarked to his agents: "I just wanted to get a little attention."
