Bicycle Collision at Resort Sends Bush Sprawling

July 07, 2005 Warren Vieth Times Staff Writer

GLASGOW, Scotland — It took thousands of demonstrators to create a big distraction on the opening day of an international summit in Scotland, but President Bush managed to match their efforts all by himself.

Shortly after arriving at the resort where leaders of the Group of 8 industrial nations were preparing to launch a three-day working retreat, Bush caused a pre-summit stir by colliding with a police officer during a high-speed bicycle ride.

White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan told reporters that the president had been riding his bike for about an hour on the grounds of the Gleneagles golf resort when he crashed into a policeman assigned to a bicycle security detail.

The police officer, from the Scottish region of Strathclyde, was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for a minor ankle injury and sent home. His name was not released.

The president, who landed on asphalt pavement, sustained "mild to moderate" bruises and scrapes on his hands and arms. They were bandaged by White House physician Richard Tubb, who accompanied Bush to Scotland.

Bush was otherwise unhurt, McClellan said, and later attended a G-8 dinner given by Britain's Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip.

Bush, a fitness buff who celebrated his 59th birthday Wednesday, was traveling at "a pretty good speed" in light rain when the accident occurred and was wearing a helmet, McClellan said.

SPOCK: Theft, Captain?

KIRK: Well, we'll steal from the rich and give back to the poor later. I think I'm going to like this century. Simple, easier to manage. We're not going to have any difficulty explaining

(Then he sees the policeman.)

POLICEMAN: Well?

KIRK: You're a police officer. I recognise the traditional accoutrements.

After the tuxedo-clad president and First Lady Laura Bush dined with the queen and other world leaders in Gleneagles, Bush called the police officer, reaching him on his cellphone as he was heading home from a hospital.

"They had a very pleasant conversation," McClellan said.

Bicycling Bush collides with Scottish officer

Published: Thursday, July 7 2005 12:00 a.m. MDT

GLENEAGLES, Scotland (AP) — President Bush collided with a local police officer and fell during a bike ride on the grounds of the Gleneagles golf resort while attending a meeting of world leaders Wednesday.

Bush suffered "mild to moderate" scrapes on his hands and arms that required bandages by the White House physician, said White House spokesman Scott McClellan. The accident occurred on asphalt, McClellan said. It was raining lightly at the time, and Bush was wearing a helmet.

Police said the officer suffered a "very minor" ankle injury.

The officer was on a security detail. He is a member of the police department of Strathclyde, McClellan said.

The president talked with the officer to make sure he was all right, and also asked White House physician Richard Tubb to monitor the officer's condition at the hospital.

The presidential bike suffered some damage, McClellan said, so Bush rode back to the hotel in a Secret Service vehicle.

The fall did not affect the president's schedule. Dressed in a tuxedo, he attended a dinner hosted by Queen Elizabeth at the annual Group of Eight economic summit. He showed no signs of distress.

SPOCK: Or Captain, Edith Keeler will die this year. I saw her obituary. Some sort of traffic accident.

Jack Welch, the former chairman of General Electric, Tuesday sold the world rights for a how-to business manual, called Winning, to HarperCollins for an estimated $4 million, the New York Times reported.

Suzy Wetlaufer, Welch's fiancee and a former editor of the Harvard Business Review, will help him write the book. "We have a lot going on," Welch said. "We've got my greasy fingernails and her brains."

Terrorists Strike in London

At Least 38 Killed, 700 Wounded in Subway, Bus Blasts

July 08, 2005 John Daniszewski Times Staff Writer

LONDON — Bombs ripped through three Underground trains and a red double-decker bus in central London during the Thursday morning rush hour, killing at least 38 people and wounding more than 700 in the deadliest terrorist attack on British soil.

Though police stopped short of identifying any individuals or groups

It was Europe's worst terrorist attack since the Madrid commuter train bombings on March 11, 2004, killed 191 people.

The three Underground blasts in London occurred within half an hour of one another, beginning at 8:51 a.m. near Liverpool Street Station in the city's financial district and historic heart. London Underground officials initially thought there was a malfunction or an accident on the line.

But as reports of the other explosions poured in, officials realized that the world's oldest subway was under lethal assault.

At 8:56 a.m., another blast occurred on the Underground between King's Cross Station and Russell Square Station. It was followed at 9:17 a.m. by an explosion on a train entering Edgware Road Station, which blew a hole in the side of an oncoming train.

Seven people were confirmed dead in the first explosion, 21 in the second and seven in the third. At least three people were killed in the bus explosion, at the intersection of Upper Woburn Place and Tavistock Square. Officials said they had recovered all the bodies from the blast scenes.

Authorities, however, said the death toll could climb, as the wounded included 45 people who were in serious or critical condition.

Some survivors described nightmarish scenes underground.
