http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZEPHYR_(code_word)

ZEPHYR (code word)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

ZEPHYR was a code word for lung cancer invented by British American Tobacco in the UK, to be used in its internal memos. An example from a 1957 BAT memo : "As a result of several statistical surveys, the idea has arisen that there is a causal relationship between ZEPHYR and tobacco smoking, particularly cigarette smoking."

Historic context

In 1952 a British scientist, Richard Doll, published a seminal study in the British Medical Journal showing a "real association between carcinoma of the lung and smoking". Over time the evidence became stronger and tobacco companies sought to counter the charges. The industry hired public relations company Hill & Knowlton to counter the negative publicity for cigarettes. One Philip Morris document written in 1976 said; "Anything can be considered harmful. Apple sauce is harmful if you get too much of it."

Time-traveler

Earlier today I had the strongest sense yet about time travel. The moment was brief but it is something that I embrace strongly when it appears, as predictable as that is. The sense today was just a brief burst of certainty in my mind that a time travel gateway would appear near me and I always look expectantly at the same place in my apartment when I think about that portal. I had a strong thought, with a certain sense of amusement, or thrill, or some other kind of pleasant sense, about how the time-travel portal is programmed to arrive at a certain time and I do not now know that time or perhaps even the place it appears. Maybe I do know somewhere in my mind. All I know now is I have for the first time I can remember a toothache that is killing me because of the dulling pain and it is not getting any better and I really don't want to have to go to a dentist.

So anyway, the reason I make this pointless observation here is that there is some reason I started only at the beginning of the year 2011 to understand that I would travel backwards in time. That was a year ago this month and that means somethings. Predictably, I want to know what that is. I want out of here and to find some place better.

PINK FLOYD

"Dogs"

You gotta be crazy, you gotta have a real need
You gotta sleep on your toes, and when you're on the street
You gotta be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed
And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight
You gotta strike when the moment is right without thinking.
And after a while, you can work on points for style
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake
A certain look in the eye, and an easy smile
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to
So that when they turn their backs on you
You'll get the chance to put the knife in.
You gotta keep one eye looking over your shoulder
You know it's going to get harder, and harder, and harder as you get older
And in the end you'll pack up, fly down south
Hide your head in the sand
Just another sad old man
All alone and dying of cancer.
And when you loose control, you'll reap the harvest you have sown
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone
And it's too late to loose the weight you used to need to throw around
So have a good drown, as you go down, all alone
Dragged down by the stone.
I gotta admit that I'm a little bit confused
Sometimes it seems to me as if I'm just being used
Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake off this creeping malaise
If I don't stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of this maze?
Deaf, dumb, and blind, you just keep on pretending
That everyone's expendable and no-one has a real friend
And it seems to you the thing to do would be to isolate the winner
And everythings done under the sun
And you believe at heart, everyone's a killer.
Who was born in a house full of pain
Who was trained not to spit in the fan
Who was told what to do by the man
Who was broken by trained personnel
Who was fitted with collar and chain
Who was given a pat on the back
Who was breaking away from the pack
Who was only a stranger at home
Who was ground down in the end
Who was found dead on the phone
Who was dragged down by the stone.

Vilar Robbed Investors as He Pledged Donations, Prosecutors Say

By Bob Van Voris

Oct. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Alberto Vilar left the federal courthouse in Manhattan on a sunny morning in June and walked slowly toward Foley Square, alone except for a handful of news photographers, a gray business suit hanging loosely from his shrunken frame. Vilar, 64, co-founder of New York-based Amerindo Investment Advisors Inc. and a well-known arts philanthropist in the city, was accused of stealing $5 million from Lily Cates, a friend and longtime client.

It was a familiar scene: an icon of the late-1990s stock boom facing criminal charges, surrounded by a scrum of press. Former Tyco International Ltd. Chief Executive Officer Dennis Kozlowski, former WorldCom Inc. CEO Bernard Ebbers and Credit Suisse First Boston Managing Director Frank Quattrone were all tried and convicted in the courthouses around Foley Square, the center of New York's legal world.

Vilar's case stands out from those others. Freed from the nearby Metropolitan Correctional Center just two days earlier, Vilar walked out into the world without the usual protective throng of family, friends and lawyers. Instead of a black sport utility vehicle or luxury sedan with tinted windows and a driver, Vilar stepped into a yellow cab for the $10.50 ride to his 20- room, two-story luxury apartment near the United Nations.

Vilar, who prosecutors said had once amassed a $950 million fortune, was released to home confinement after sitting in jail for 3 1/2 weeks, unable to put together just $4 million to secure his bail. His lawyer, Susan Necheles, was trying to withdraw from the case, citing conflicts with her client and her concern that she wouldn't be paid.

Business Creditors

Vilar faced a suit by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the claims of former friends and investors who say he stole their money, and court judgments won by business creditors and former employees.

Many of the opera companies and other charities to which Vilar had pledged more than $200 million faced the reality that he wouldn't pay them anytime soon, if ever.

As early as next year, a jury may consider whether Vilar and his partner, Gary Tanaka, 62, stole the $5 million from Cates, as prosecutors claim. What is clear is that in 2002, when they allege the crime took place, Vilar was in a desperate spot, personally and financially.

By mid-2002, Vilar and Amerindo were out of cash as a result of a steep drop in the value of their holdings in technology stocks. Vilar complained of back and leg pain that he said kept him out of the office for months at a time.

Mentally Incapacitated

The drugs he was taking for the pain, he later claimed, left him mentally incapacitated. ``I was fighting for my financial survival,'' Vilar testified in a 2003 deposition.

Whether or not the events of 2002 drove Vilar to crime, they put him and his firm in a hole too deep to climb out of.

And they provide a cautionary tale for investors and regulators who didn't see the signs until too late.

Vilar and Tanaka are charged with conspiracy, securities fraud, investment adviser fraud, mail fraud, wire fraud and money laundering. Additional charges are possible.

``We fear that they are just the tip of the iceberg,'' Assistant U.S. Attorney David Esseks said of the charges on May 27, the day after Vilar and Tanaka were arrested. They face as many as 10 years in prison if convicted.

Vilar and Tanaka have pleaded not guilty. Both men declined to be interviewed. Lily Cates, who is the mother of actress Phoebe Cates, did not respond to phone messages left at her home and with her lawyer.

SECNAV INSTRUCTION 1650.1H

From: Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Manpower and Reserve Affairs)

Subj: NAVY AND MARINE CORPS AWARDS MANUAL

1. Purpose. To provide guidance and regulations concerning awards available for recognizing individuals and units in the Naval Service.

2. Navy Cross

a. Authorization. 10 U.S.C. S6242.

b. Eligibility Requirements

(1) Awarded to individuals who, while serving in any capacity with the Navy or Marine Corps, distinguish themselves by extraordinary heroism, not justifying the award of the Medal of Honor.

(a) While engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States;

(b) While engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or

(c) While serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force, in which the United States is not a belligerent party.

(2) To warrant this distinctive decoration, the act or execution of duty must be performed in the presence of great danger, or at great personal risk, and must be performed in such a manner as to set individuals apart from their shipmates or fellow Marines. An accumulation of minor acts of heroism normally does not justify the award. The high standards SECNAVINST 1650.1H demanded must be borne in mind when recommending the award.

Jim West, Republican politician, dead at 55

By David Postman and Ralph Thomas

Seattle Times Olympia bureau

Jim West died Saturday of complications from surgery.

Only cancer could end Jim West's dream of a renewed political career.

The former Spokane mayor died early Saturday in Seattle of complications from surgery. He was 55. He already had lost his office by recall and his reputation by allegations of sexual misconduct.

But in his final days, Mr. West, once one of the state's most powerful Republicans, was said to have been thinking about a political comeback.

"I wish he could have lived long enough for his reputation to be restored to the place of honor that he deserved," said Mr. West's ex-wife, Ginger Marshall. They remained close after their brief marriage, and Marshall was with Mr. West when he died at the University of Washington Medical Center.

"He was a man of the people," Marshall said. "He never saw himself above them or better than them. He worked for them."

Mr. West was diagnosed in 2003 with colon cancer, which spread to his liver. He underwent repeated surgeries and chemotherapy treatments.

Mr. West "was Spokane's first mayor who was a real politician," said Spokane novelist Jess Walter, a former reporter for The Spokesman-Review. "This was a guy who knew how to play politics."

Jim West Dies At 55

Former Spokane, Wash. Mayor James E. West Dies

Spokane, WA — Former Mayor James E. West, recalled from office over an Internet sex scandal, died Saturday at a Seattle hospital after suffering complications from recent cancer surgery. He was 55.The former Republican state senate majority leader was diagnosed with colon cancer in early 2003. The disease later spread to his liver.

A statement released by University of Washington Medical Center Saturday morning said West's family and pastor were at his side when he died.

"As a family we wish to thank the caregivers at University of Washington Medical Center, and the many friends of Jim for their support and prayers," the family said in their statement.

West became the first Spokane city official to be recalled from office on Dec. 6, 2005, ending a 27-year career in city and state politics.

Seven months after The Spokesman-Review began publishing results of a computer "sting" it conducted to track the mayor's online activities in a gay chat room, West was ousted on a single charge that he used his office for personal benefit.

West admitted having relations with adult men but denied doing anything illegal. He was never criminally charged, although the FBI conducted a public corruption investigation.

West chose to unsuccessfully fight the recall, despite calls for his resignation by the Spokane City Council, the Spokane Regional Chamber of Commerce, and state and local Republican parties.

"It's an unusual episode in my life. I wish there was a rewind button; rewind and erase and start over," West told the AP. "Basically, that's what I'm asking the public, for a second chance."

Episode 21 - "Greatest Hits"

Act 5

WOMAN: Hey, help me! Help! Help! Help!

[Charlie looks to see down an alley a woman being mugged. He hesitates but then intervenes.]

CHARLIE: OI!!!

WOMAN: Help!

CHARLIE: Oi! Get the hell away from her.

[Charlie hits the man mugging her with his guitar case.]

CHARLIE: What are you doing? Leave her alone!

[The man runs away.]

CHARLIE: You OK, Miss?

[The woman is Nadia.]

NADIA: Yes, I think so, yes.

CHARLIE: [Hands her her purse] Here you go. [Pants] Pardon me while I have a heart attack. The last time I was in a fight I was eight years old. [Laughs] And I lost.

NADIA: Well, that makes you even more of a hero, doesn't it?

CHARLIE: I just did what anyone would do.

NADIA: Three people walked by the alley.

CHARLIE: What?

NADIA: They saw me, but they just kept on going. You are a hero, sir. And don't let anyone ever tell you differently.

[Present - Charlie adds to his list - "#2 Woman outside Covent Garden calls me a hero." He and Desmond are by the canoe ready to go. Charlie sees Desmond making something.]

CHARLIE: What's that?

DESMOND: It's a weight belt. Should bring you down quicker than swimming. Well, every second counts.

CHARLIE: So I just take it off when I hit bottom, swim up through the moon pool, into the station, swim into whichever room has the yellow blinking switch, flip it. Nothing to it.

DESMOND: So how long can you really hold your breath for?

CHARLIE: Does it matter?

Part 2

Act 1

[Flash-forward - Jack picking up a prescription.]

PHARMACIST: I'm sorry, sir, there are no more refills left on this prescription.

JACK: Ah, that's a mistake. I, uh, I only refilled it twice, could you check again?

PHARMACIST: I did check it again, Dr. Shephard, and that was the third refill so there's nothing I can do.

JACK: Fine. I've got another prescription right here.

MAN: Hey, I know you. You're the hero.

JACK: I'm not a hero.

MAN: Yeah yeah, we saw it on TV. Hey lady, what's wrong with you? Just give this guy whatever he needs. Do you know what he did?

JACK: Here it is, here. Oxycodone.

PHARMACIST: Dr. Shephard, you can't write a prescription for yourself.

JACK: That's not me, that's Dr. Christian Shephard, I'm Dr. Jack Shephard, he's my father.

PHARMACIST: I'm gonna have to call your father's office to confirm this.

JACK: He's out of town right now.

PHARMACIST: Well I'm sure somebody in the office—

[Jack slams on the counter.]

JACK: Don't bother.

[He leaves, knocking over a fixture as he goes.]

The Telegraph

Senior Russian spy Mikhail Mukasei dies aged 101

A top Soviet spy who carried out secret undercover operations against America and Western Europe over three decades has died aged 101.

6:45PM BST 19 Aug 2008

Mikhail Mukasei started his brilliant career in espionage during the Second World War, when he used his position as the Soviet vice-consul in Los Angeles to collect information on the threat posed to the Soviet Union by Japan.

Later, with his wife Elizaveta, he worked in an unnamed "West European country" from the 1950s until they returned to Moscow in 1977.

The couple wrote a memoir - without revealing classified information - in 2004 under the title "Zephyr", their old KGB call sign.

Russia's foreign intelligence agency, the SVR, has released a glowing tribute to Mukasei on its website www.svr.gov.ru

"Their active work was as illegal operatives," the Russian-language tribute said. "The geographic operations of the Mukaseis were very extensive: they performed tasks for the motherland on several continents."

Mukasei's Soviet employers were well pleased with their star spy: he was rewarded with the Red Banner, the Red Star and the Andropov medal before taking on the task of training new generations of secret agents.

In this capacity he wrote books and teaching aids for today's cadre of Russian spies, who are once more pitting their wits against Western intelligence targets.

So successful was Mukasei that the Soviet Union's successor state Russia also honoured him with a medal for an "outstanding contribution to ensuring the security of the Russian Federation."

During the presidency of Vladimir Putin, a former secret service colonel, the KGB and its successors returned to positions of prominence in Russian politics.

In recent years the security focus has been increasingly turned towards the West as Russia came into opposition with Nato on the status of East European nations of the former Eastern Bloc.

Last week's brief conflict in Georgia showed how far the confrontation could escalate - and how important Mukasei's espionage teaching aides could be.

Does Prozac help artists be creative?

More than 40 million people globally take an SSRI antidepressant, among them many writers and musicians. But do they hamper the creative process, extinguishing the spark that produces great art, or do they enhance artistic endeavour?

Alex Preston

The Observer, Saturday 18 May 2013

Twenty-five years after pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly unleashed Prozac on the red-braced 80s, SSRIs are still the world's most popular antidepressants. They are swallowed by more than 40 million people, from Beijing to Beirut, knitting a web of happiness from New York to New Caledonia. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, of which Prozac is the best known, are the defining drug of the modern age, the crutch of choice for the worried well. In the US, where one in 10 takes antidepressants, you can buy beef-flavoured Prozac for your dog, trademarked Reconcile. The Prozac revolution has not only changed the way we think about depression (aided by Eli Lilly's mammoth advertising campaign); it has also changed the way we think, full stop.

In his 1993 book Listening to Prozac, the psychiatrist Peter D Kramer explored the ethical issues around the rise of what he termed "cosmetic pharmacology". With a daily pill people could now banish social awkwardness or the unhappiness of relationship break-ups, forge brassily assertive personae from their once shy selves. Like the Soma of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, Prozac was making people "better than well". Kramer wrote of the "personality transformations" that occurred in a substantial minority of those taking the drug, briefly pausing to speculate as to what impact this might have had on their creativity. While we know, thanks to Kay Redfield Jamison's Touched with Fire, that poets are up to 30 times more likely to suffer from bipolar disorder than the national average, we have no idea how or if the pills they take to treat the disease affect their creative output.

The French writer Henry de Montherlant said that happiness writes white. For me that whiteness was the colour of a 20mg Cipralex pill – a close cousin of Prozac – taken at the breakfast table. With the depthless chemical happiness of the drug, a thin layer of snow seemed to fall over my mind, blocking access to strong feeling, cutting me off from the hidden impulses that drove me to write. Sometimes I did feel "better than well", but more often I was haunted by the uncanny feeling that I was skimming over the surface of my life. Looking back, those Prozac years have a curious, occluded feel, as if viewed through a gauze.

To celebrate the drug's quarter-century, I spoke to other writers, artists and musicians who have taken SSRIs, trying to establish whether they have been a bane or a boon for our collective creativity. I've deliberately concentrated on the arts, rather than the sciences. This is partly because, while we've all seen Carrie Mathison in Homeland and John Nash in A Beautiful Mind, there is significantly more literature on artists and writers taking antidepressants than on chemists and economists. It's partly because the arts are my bailiwick: I'm not on "are you on drugs?" terms with that many scientists.

We expect our artists to be, in Baudelaire's words, touched by "a breath of wind from the wings of madness". In his book Poets on Prozac, Richard Berlin speaks of "an entire generation of writers who became famed for the dramatic excesses of their psychiatric disorders". Sylvia Plath sits at the head of a pantheon of artists who took their own lives – Virginia Woolf, Alexander McQueen, Ernest Hemingway, David Foster Wallace – and who battered their bodies into submission with drugs and booze (see also Roberto BolaƱo, Amy Winehouse, F Scott Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday). It's easy to agree with Dryden when he says, "Great wits are sure to madness near allied, / And thin partitions do their bounds divide."

From Heinrich Heine to Edvard Munch, many resisted treatment for their depression, fearing a loss of creative urges. When offered psychotherapy, the poet Edward Thomas replied: "I wonder whether for a person like myself whose most intense moments were those of depression, a cure that destroys the depression may not destroy the intensity – a desperate remedy?" Sigmund Freud – who also killed himself – argued that artistic creativity is a product of neurosis. We deal with the conflicts in our subconscious by making objects out of them. If this, grossly simplified, is the theory behind the link between mental illness and creativity, then the worry for artists is that in banishing their black dogs they are also dousing the flames of inspiration, blunting the edge of their genius.

Episode 22 - "Through the Looking Glass"

NAOMI: [Pulls out her phone] So, I need to show you how this wonderful gadget works in case anything happens to me. You need to be able to call my boat.

JACK: OK. Show me.

NAOMI: It's actually simple. You turn her on here. This opens a direct channel to the freighter. Give her a tap here. Wait for the beep, and say hello.

JACK: And that's it?

NAOMI: That's it. Once the rock star turns off whatever underwater contraption's jamming us up, this red light will turn a lovely shade of green. That'll be any time now, yeah?

JACK: Hopefully.

[In the Looking Glass station, the blonde woman hits a tied-up Charlie.]
BLONDE WOMAN: Who are you?

BRUNETTE WOMAN: Look, if you tell us how you got down here, we won't hurt you.

CHARLIE: I came in my invisible submarine. Don't you see it?

[The blonde woman hits Charlie again.]

BRUNETTE WOMAN: Hey! Take it easy.

BLONDE WOMAN: Take it easy? He's one of them. Why are you here, huh? How did you find out about this station?

CHARLIE: Juliet told us. She's one of us now. In case you haven't heard.

Sigmund Freud

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sigmund Freud ( born Sigismund Schlomo Freud; 6 May 1856 – 23 September 1939) was an Austrian neurologist who became known as the founding father of psychoanalysis.

Struggle with cancer

In February 1923, Freud detected a leukoplakia, a benign growth associated with heavy smoking, on his mouth. Freud initially kept this secret, but in April 1923 he informed Ernest Jones, telling him that the growth had been removed. Freud consulted the dermatologist Maximilian Steiner, who advised him to quit smoking but lied about the growth's seriousness, minimizing its importance. Freud later saw Felix Deutsch, who saw that the growth was cancerous; he identified it to Freud using the euphemism "a bad leukoplakia" instead of the technical diagnosis epithelioma. Deutsch advised Freud to stop smoking and have the growth excised. Freud was treated by Marcus Hajek, a rhinologist whose competence he had previously questioned. Hajek performed an unnecessary cosmetic surgery in his clinic's outpatient department. Freud bled during and after the operation, and may narrowly have escaped death. Freud subsequently saw Deutsch again. Deutsch saw that further surgery would be required, but refrained from telling Freud that he had cancer because he was worried that Freud might wish to commit suicide.

Escape from Nazism

In 1930, Freud was awarded the Goethe Prize in recognition of his contributions to psychology and to German literary culture. In January 1933, the Nazis took control of Germany, and Freud's books were prominent among those they burned and destroyed. Freud quipped: "What progress we are making. In the Middle Ages they would have burned me. Now, they are content with burning my books."

Freud continued to maintain his optimistic underestimation of the growing Nazi threat and remained determined to stay in Vienna, even following the Anschluss of 13 March 1938 in which Nazi Germany annexed Austria, and the outbursts of violent anti-Semitism that ensued.

Ernest Jones, the then president of the International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA), flew into Vienna from London via Prague on 15 March determined to get Freud to change his mind and seek exile in Britain. This prospect and the shock of the detention and interrogation of Anna Freud by the Gestapo finally convinced Freud it was time to leave Vienna. Jones left for London the following week with a list provided by Freud of the party of ƩmigrƩs for whom immigration permits would be required. Back in London, Jones used his personal acquaintance with the Home Secretary, Sir Samuel Hoare to expedite the granting of permits. There were seventeen in all and work permits were provided where relevant.

Jones also used his influence in scientific circles, persuading the president of the Royal Society, Sir William Bragg, to write to the Foreign Secretary Lord Halifax, requesting to good effect that diplomatic pressure be applied in Berlin and Vienna on Freud's behalf. Freud also had support from American diplomats, notably his ex-patient and American ambassador to France, William Bullitt.

The departure from Vienna began in stages throughout April and May 1938. Freud's grandson Ernst Halberstadt and Freud's son Martin's wife and children left for Paris in April. Freud's sister-in-law, Minna Bernays, left for London on 5 May, Martin Freud the following week and Freud's daughter Mathilde and her husband, Robert Hollitscher, on 24 May.

By the end of the month, arrangements for Freud's own departure for London had become stalled, mired in a legally tortuous and financially extortionate process of negotiation with the Nazi authorities. However, the Nazi appointed Kommissar put in charge of his assets and those of the IPA proved to be sympathetic to Freud's plight. Anton Sauerwald had studied chemistry at Vienna University under Professor Josef Herzig, an old friend of Freud's, and evidently retained, notwithstanding his Nazi Party allegiance, a respect for Freud's professional standing. Expected to disclose details of all Freud's bank accounts to his superiors and to follow their instructions to destroy the historic library of books housed in the offices of the IPA, in the event Sauerwald did neither, removing evidence of Freud's foreign bank accounts to his own safe-keeping and arranging the storage of the IPA library in the Austrian National Library where they remained until the end of the war.

Though Sauerwald's intervention lessened the financial burden of the "flight" tax on Freud's declared assets, other substantial charges were levied in relation to the debts of the IPA and the valuable collection of antiquities Freud possessed. Unable to access his own accounts, Freud turned to Princess Marie Bonaparte, the most eminent and wealthy of his French followers, who had travelled to Vienna to offer her support and it was she who made the necessary funds available. This allowed Sauerwald to sign the necessary exit visas for Freud, his wife Martha and daughter Anna. They left Vienna on the Orient Express on 4 June, accompanied by their household staff and a doctor, arriving in Paris the following day where they stayed as guests of Princess Bonaparte before travelling overnight to London arriving at Victoria Station on 6 June.

Many famous names were soon to call on Freud to pay their respects, notably Salvador DalĆ, Stefan Zweig, Leonard and Virginia Woolf, and H.G. Wells. Representatives of the Royal Society called with the Society's Charter for Freud to sign himself into membership. Princess Bonaparte arrived towards the end of June to discuss the fate of Freud's four elderly sisters left behind in Vienna. Her subsequent attempts to get them exit visas failed and they were all to die in Nazi concentration camps. In the Spring of 1939 Anton Sauerwald arrived to see Freud, ostensibly to discuss matters relating to the assets of the IPA. He was able to do Freud one last favour. He returned to Vienna to drive Freud's Viennese cancer specialist, Hans Pichler, to London to operate on the worsening condition of Freud's cancerous jaw.

Sauerwald was tried and imprisoned in 1945 by an Austrian court for his activities as a Nazi Party official. Responding to a plea from his wife, Anna Freud wrote to confirm that Sauerwald "used his office as our appointed commissar in such a manner as to protect my father". Her intervention helped secure his release from jail in 1947.

In the Freuds' new home at 20 Maresfield Garden, Hampstead, North London, Freud's Vienna consulting room was recreated in faithful detail. He continued to see patients there until the terminal stages of his illness. He also worked on his last books, Moses and Monotheism, published in German in 1938 and in English the following year and the uncompleted Outline of Psychoanalysis which was published posthumously.

Death

By mid-September 1939, Freud's cancer of the mouth was causing him increasingly severe pain and had been declared to be inoperable. After reading HonorĆ© de Balzac's La Peau de chagrin in a single sitting, Freud turned to his doctor, friend and fellow refugee, Max Schur, reminding him that they had previously discussed the terminal stages of his illness: "Schur, you remember our 'contract' not to leave me in the lurch when the time had come. Now it is nothing but torture and makes no sense." When Schur replied that he had not forgotten, Freud said, "I thank you," and then "Talk it over with Anna, and if she thinks it's right, then make an end of it." Anna Freud wanted to postpone her father’s death, but Schur convinced her it was pointless to keep him alive, and on 21 and 22 September administered doses of morphine that resulted in Freud's death on 23 September 1939.

Might take a long time.
But don’t give up hope.
Everyone is cured sooner or later.
And in the end...
we shall shoot you.
