SEATTLE – Ten years ago today, the Puget Sound region was rocked by the largest earthquake in decades, injuring more than 400 people and causing more than $500 million worth of damage.
Centered 30 miles southwest of Seattle, the 6.8 magnitude Nisqually quake struck at 10:54 a.m. on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001.
In Seattle, Tacoma, and communities across the region, the ground shook for up to 40 seconds, sending people running for cover. The earthquake was felt as far away as Salt Lake City.
Damage was widespread. In Seattle alone, more than 600 buildings were damaged. One death was attributed to the quake and more than 400 people were hurt.
While the Alaskan Way Viaduct survived the quake, its joints and columns were damaged, further weakening the structure and revealing its vulnerability.
The quake disrupted gas, electric, and phone service and triggered landslides. Hundreds of chimneys toppled, and buildings with foundations resting on unstable soil or not tied to their foundations were shaken off their mountings.
The State Capitol dome was damaged and on Highway 101 betwen Shelton and Olympia, the quake opened up a major hole in the roadway.
While Seattle escaped major damage, piles of rubble blocked downtown sidewalks. The control tower at Sea-Tac Airport was destroyed and many buildings in the Pioneer Square and Sodo neighborhoods were damaged.
Scientists say in the decade since the Nisqually earthquake, the level of seismic danger in the Pacific Northwest hasn't changed, but scientific ideas about the danger have evolved and the ability to study and prepare for it has improved immensely.
Scientists from the University of Washington and the U.S. Geological Survey have increased their knowledge about the three different types of non-volcanic earthquakes that occur in the Northwest, and are learning how unfelt "episodic tremor and slip" events relate to seismic risk.

Shielding
Shielding from gamma rays requires large amounts of mass, in contrast to alpha particles which can be blocked by paper or skin, and beta particles which can be shielded by foil. Gamma rays are better absorbed by materials with high atomic numbers and high density, although neither effect is important compared to the total mass per area in the path of the gamma ray. For this reason, a lead shield is only modestly better (20–30% better) as a gamma shield, than an equal mass of another shielding material such as aluminium, concrete, water or soil; lead's major advantage is not in lower weight, but rather its compactness due to its higher density. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- The shuttle Endeavour, with a crew of six astronauts, roared into space on Saturday for the first flight test of a powerful new radar observatory developed under an international agreement for global environmental research.
If this and at least one other test flight of the $391 million observatory prove successful, U.S. and European collaborators are hopeful that a future version of the device can be placed aboard continuously orbiting satellites.
The observatory was developed to survey a wide range of environmental phenomena -- including rainfall levels and measurements of the water content of mountain snow packs. Also, it will survey crop yields, soil erosion, shifts in ocean currents that influence seasonal weather changes and earthquake fault lines.

The Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda (German: Reichsministerium für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda or Propagandaministerium) was Nazi Germany's ministry that enforced Nazi Party ideology in Germany and regulated its culture and society. Founded on March 13, 1933, by Adolf Hitler's new National Socialist government, the Ministry was headed by Dr. Joseph Goebbels and was responsible for controlling the press and culture of Nazi Germany.
The Ministry was based in the Ordenspalais in Berlin-Mitte on the Wilhelmplatz across from the Reich Chancellery.
Role in the Nazi state
When the Nazis took power the Propaganda Ministry was established almost immediately. It was charged with enforcing Nazi doctrine on the people and controlling public opinion. However, the Ministry became even more important after the outbreak of war.
World War II was conducted with a much greater level of propaganda than World War I, especially in the new media of film and radio. Because of practical experience and scientific occupation with propaganda in Europe and USA, propaganda was organised in a planned fashion. A new psychological warfare was born.
Organization
The Ministry grew steadily. It began in 1933 with five departments and 350 employees. By 1939, there were 2000 employees in 17 departments. Between 1933 and 1941, the Ministry's budget grew from 14 million to 187 million Reichsmarks. Three state secretaries were subordinate to Joseph Goebbels
Propaganda

The Propaganda Ministry used many media to further the National Socialist message and maintain control over the people. Posters, newspapers, publishing, and the arts were all used and explicitly controlled by the Ministry.
Speeches were also used to great effect by the German Government. Goebbels commented on Hitler's first speech as Chancellor: "It will have great propaganda value...be used and viewed in cinemas for years to come...what an achievement."
Just before Hitler delivered this speech Goebbels introduced him and used the opportunity to highlight the importance of propaganda. "It seems you cannot have a good government without good propaganda, but then, you can't have good propaganda without a good government.

Half-human, half-Ktarian daughter of Samantha Wildman, the first child born on the U.S.S. Voyager after it was swept into the Delta Quadrant. Her Ktarian father's name is Greskrendtregk, but since he remained at station Deep Space 9 when Voyager was lost, the child has grown up not knowing him.
Naomi was born under very bizarre circumstances. On Stardate 49548 (2372), Wildman was giving birth at the same time Voyager encountered a spatial scission that created an exact duplicate of the ship and its crew. Because of the baby's Ktarian physiology, Wildman suffered complications during labor and the infant died. However, on the duplicate Voyager the infant survived. But that duplicate ship was doomed, and the Captain Janeway on that vessel ordered Ensign Kim (whose double had died) to take the healthy baby and escape aboard the other ship.
The Ktarian half of Naomi's physiology caused her to grow very quickly; by the age of two, she resembled a four-year-old human child.

New Zealand was used as a hub for American Marines, waiting to be shipped out to fight in the South Pacific during WWII; and this movie tells the story of four "kiwi" sisters and their romantic entanglement with American servicemen.
Joan Fontaine plays the oldest sister (nicknamed "Iceberg Anne" by Evelyn). Anne started as the unsympathetic old maid who looked down on all local girls who threw themselves at the American soldiers, then ended up falling in love with Charles Drake's down-to-earth Captain Dick Bates.
Jean Simmons plays the second sister, Barbara, a widow who finds herself drawn to the cynical Captain Jack Harding, played by Paul Newman. Jack is in charge of investigating marriage requests submitted by marines, ensuring that the lonely boys are not infesting the USA with "undesirable" women; hence, he does not believe in having romantic relationship with any women. Barbara is in love with Jack, but does not want to see herself becoming Delia and another one of "those girls." Their feelings for each other grew strong and against their better judgments, they begin an "almost" love affair for a few months, and then Jack sets sail to join the other marines fighting in the South Pacific.
Piper Laurie plays Delia - the black sheep of the family (and the actress with the least screen time). Her endless string of love affairs with American servicemen, while her husband rots away in an POW camp, eventually leads to her own death and a scandalous murder trial. Ironically, this is also what finally brought Barbara and Jack back together.

The Prisoner of War Medal is a military award of the United States armed forces which was authorized by Congress and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on 8 November 1985. The United States Code citation for the POW Medal statute is 10 U.S.C. § 1128.
The Prisoner of War Medal may be awarded to any person who was a prisoner of war after April 5, 1917, (the date of the United States entry into World War I was the 6th). During World War II, the citizens of Morgan Creek are saying farewell to the enlisted men heading off to war. Trudy Kockenlocker is one of the Morgan Creek residents who feels it's her patriotic duty to give the soldiers a happy send off, this against the wishes of her stern and overprotective policeman father who forbids her to attend the farewell parties. Trudy co-opts her naive childhood friend, bank clerk Norval Jones, to help her clandestinely go to the festivities. Norval, who so wants to enlist himself but has some medical issues preventing him from doing so, does anything Trudy asks since he loves her. The next morning, Trudy doesn't remember everything of the previous night due to an accidental bump to the head, but she does know that she got married to one of the enlisted men - she doesn't know who or even what his name is - and that the evening resulted in her getting pregnant.

First man in space
On April 12, 1961, aboard the spacecraft Vostok 1, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin becomes the first human being to travel into space. During the flight, the 27-year-old test pilot and industrial technician also became the first man to orbit the planet, a feat accomplished by his space capsule in 89 minutes. Vostok 1 orbited Earth at a maximum altitude of 187 miles and was guided entirely by an automatic control system. The only statement attributed to Gagarin during his one hour and 48 minutes in space was, "Flight is proceeding normally; I am well."
After his historic feat was announced, the attractive and unassuming Gagarin became an instant worldwide celebrity. He was awarded the Order of Lenin and given the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. Monuments were raised to him across the Soviet Union and streets renamed in his honor.
The triumph of the Soviet space program in putting the first man into space was a great blow to the United States, which had scheduled its first space flight for May 1961. Moreover, Gagarin had orbited Earth, a feat that eluded the U.S. space program until February 1962, when astronaut John Glenn made three orbits in Friendship 7. By that time, the Soviet Union had already made another leap ahead in the "space race" with the August 1961 flight of cosmonaut Gherman Titov in Vostok 2. Titov made 17 orbits and spent more than 25 hours in space.

A day of infamy: World Trade Center collapses in terrorist attack

NEW YORK — In the most devastating terrorist onslaught ever waged against the United States, knife-wielding hijackers crashed two airliners into the World Trade Center on Tuesday, toppling its twin 110-story towers. The deadly calamity was witnessed on televisions across the world as another plane slammed into the Pentagon, and a fourth crashed outside Pittsburgh.
"Today, our nation saw evil," President Bush said in an address to the nation Tuesday night. He said thousands of lives were "suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror."
Said Adm. Robert J. Natter, commander of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet: "We have been attacked like we haven't since Pearl Harbor."
Establishing the U.S. death toll could take weeks. The four airliners alone had 266 people aboard and there were no known survivors. In addition, a firefighters union official said he feared an estimated 200 firefighters had died in rescue efforts. Dozens of police officers were believed missing.
No one took responsibility for the attacks that rocked the seats of finance and government, but federal authorities identified Osama bin Laden — who has been given asylum by Afghanistan's Taliban rulers — as the prime suspect.
Aided by an intercept of communications between his supporters and harrowing cell phone calls from at least one flight attendant and two passengers aboard the jetliners before they crashed, U.S. officials began assembling a case linking bin Laden to the devastation.
U.S. intelligence intercepted communications between bin Laden supporters discussing the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, according to Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The people aboard planes who managed to make cell phone calls each described similar circumstances: They indicated the hijackers were armed with knives, in some cases stabbing flight attendants. They then took control of the planes.
At the World Trade Center, the dead and the doomed plummeted from the skyscrapers, among them a man and woman holding hands.
"Freedom itself was attacked this morning and I assure you freedom will be defended," said Bush, who was in Florida at the time of the catastrophe. As a security measure, he was shuttled to a Strategic Air Command bunker in Nebraska before leaving for Washington.
"Make no mistake," he said. "The United States will hunt down and pursue those responsible for these cowardly actions."
More than nine hours after the U.S. attacks began, explosions could be heard north of the Afghan capital of Kabul, but American officials said the United States was not responsible. "It isn't us. I don't know who's doing it," Pentagon spokesman Craig Quigley said.
Officials across the world condemned the attacks but in the West Bank city of Nablus, thousands of Palestinians celebrated, chanting "God is Great" and handing out candy.
At the Pentagon, the symbol and command center for the nation's military force, one side of the building collapsed as smoke billowed over the Potomac River. Rep. Ike Skelton, briefed by Pentagon officials, said, "There appear to be about 100 casualties" in the building.
The television images were extraordinary: a plane slamming into the second tower as smoke poured from the first; the buildings tumbling down and vanishing in a gray cloud; bloodied survivors stumbling through the streets of Manhattan, covered with dust and ashes.
The attacks altered the very skyline of Manhattan, destroying two buildings where 50,000 people worked. The first airstrike occurred shortly before 8:45 a.m. EDT. By evening, huge clouds of smoke still billowed from the ruins. A burning, 47-story part of the World Trade Center complex — already evacuated — collapsed in flames just before nightfall.
Emergency Medical Service worker Louis Garcia said initial reports indicated that bodies were buried beneath the two feet of soot on streets around the trade center.
"A lot of the vehicles are running over bodies because they are all over the place," he said.
For the first time, the nation's aviation system was completely shut down as officials considered the frightening flaws that had been exposed in security procedures. Financial markets were closed, too.
Top leaders of Congress were led to an undisclosed location, as were key officials of the Bush administration. Guards armed with automatic weapons patrolled the White House grounds and military aircraft secured the skies above the capital city.
Evacuations were ordered at the tallest skyscrapers in several cities, and high-profile tourist attractions closed — Walt Disney World, Mount Rushmore, Seattle's Space Needle, the Gateway Arch in St. Louis.
The Federal Reserve, seeking to provide assurances that the nation's banking system would be protected, said it would provide additional money to banks if needed.
In Afghanistan, where bin Laden has been given asylum, the nation's hardline Taliban rulers rejected suggestions he was responsible.
Bin Laden came to prominence fighting alongside the U.S.-backed Afghan mujahedeen — holy warriors — in their war against Soviet troops in the 1980s. But former followers say he turned against the United States during the 1991 Gulf War, seething at the deployment of U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War campaign to oust Iraq from Kuwait. He has repeatedly called on Muslims worldwide to join in a jihad, or holy war, against the United States.
Abdel-Bari Atwan, editor of the Al-Quds al-Arabi newspaper, said he received a warning from Islamic fundamentalists close to bin Laden, but had not taken the threat seriously. "They said it would be a huge and unprecedented attack, but they did not specify," Atwan said in a telephone interview in London.
Eight years ago, the World Trade Center was a terrorist target when a truck bomb killed six people and wounded about 1,000 others. Just the death toll on the planes alone surpassed the 168 people killed in the 1995 bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City.
This is how Tuesday's mayhem unfolded:
At about 8:45 a.m., a hijacked airliner crashed into the north tower of the trade center, the 25-year-old, glass-and-steel complex that was once the world's tallest.
Clyde Ebanks, an insurance company vice president, was at a meeting on the 103rd floor of the south tower when his boss said, "Look at that!" He turned to see a plane slam into the other tower.
"I just heard the building rock," said Peter Dicerbo, a bank employee on the 47th floor. "It knocked me on the floor. It sounded like a big roar, then the building started swaying. That's what really scared me."
The enormity of the disaster was just sinking in when 18 minutes later, the south tower also was hit by a plane.

Gleichschaltung (meaning "coordination", "making the same", "bringing into line", is a Nazi term for the process by which the Nazi regime successively established a system of totalitarian control and tight coordination over all aspects of society. The historian Richard J. Evans translated the term as "forcible-coordination" in his most recent work on Nazi Germany.
Among the goals of this policy were to bring about adherence to a specific doctrine and way of thinking and to control as many aspects of life as possible.
The apex of the Nazification of Germany was in the resolutions approved during the Nuremberg Rally of 1935, when the symbols of the Party and the State were fused (see Flag of Germany), and the Germans of Jewish religion and descent were deprived of citizenship, paving the way to the Holocaust.
Overview
The period from 1933 to 1937 was characterized by the systematic elimination of non-Nazi organizations that could potentially influence people, such as trade unions and political parties. Those critical of Hitler's agenda, especially his close ties with industry[citation needed], were suppressed, intimidated or murdered. The regime also assailed the influence of the churches, for example by instituting the Ministry of Ecclesiastical Affairs under Hanns Kerrl. Organizations that the administration could not eliminate, such as the education system, came under its direct control.
Specific measures
In a more specific sense, Gleichschaltung refers to the legal measures taken by the government during the first months following January 30, 1933, when Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany. It was in this sense that the term was used by the Nazis themselves.
1. One day after the Reichstag fire on February 27, 1933, President of Germany Paul von Hindenburg, acting at Hitler's request and on the basis of the emergency powers in article 48 of the Weimar Constitution, issued the Reichstag Fire Decree. This decree suspended most human rights provided for by the constitution and thus allowed for the arrest of political adversaries, mostly Communists, and for general terrorizing by the SA, the Nazi paramilitary force, of other voters before the upcoming election.
2. In this atmosphere the Reichstag general election of March 5, 1933 took place. This election yielded only a slim majority for Hitler's coalition government and no majority for Hitler's own Nazi party.
3. When the newly elected Reichstag first convened on March 23, 1933, (not including the Communist delegates, since their party had already been banned by that time) it passed the Enabling Act (Ermächtigungsgesetz), transferring all legislative powers to the Nazi government and, in effect, abolishing the remainder of the Weimar constitution as a whole. Soon afterwards the government banned the Social Democratic Party, which had voted against the Act, while the other parties were intimidated into dissolving themselves rather than face arrests and concentration camp imprisonment.

CHAKOTAY: Probably. Judging from the transmissions they seem to have a tolerant society.
KIM: Hmm. Well, just to be on the safe side, I'll find him an isolated spot.

TORRES: I'm giving you access to your facial and epidermal parameters. You should be able to mimic the appearance of whoever is down there in a matter of seconds.
EMH: What if they're big, purple blobs of protoplasm?

Radar Pioneer William Blair
The US Army CECOM dedicated the largest building in the C4ISR Campus in memory of William Blair, the “father of radar.” Building 6009/6010 is known as Blair Hall.
Blair was born in County Derry, Ireland on 7 November 1874 and immigrated to the United States with his parents at the age of nine. He graduated from the University of Chicago with a Ph.D. in 1906, and went to work for the U.S. Weather Bureau.
Blair joined the Army 3 September 1917 and was commissioned as a Major in the Aviation Section of the Signal Officers’ Reserve Corps. During the First World War, he served in France as Officer in Charge of the Meteorological Section, Signal Corps, American Expeditionary Force. Immediately following the war, he served as a member of the technical subcommittee of the Aeronautical Committee at the Peace Conference. He was then assigned Officer in Charge, Meteorological Section, Signal Corps, Office of the Chief Signal Officer. One of his assignments was forecasting the weather for the first around the world flight of Army aircraft in 1924.
In 1923, Blair graduated from the Signal School at Camp Alfred Vail (which would become Fort Monmouth in 1925). He then graduated from the Command and General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth in 1926.
Blair took charge of the Engineering and Research Division in the Office of the Chief Signal Officer that same year. He served as director of the Signal Corps Laboratories at Fort Monmouth from 1930 until his promotion to full Colonel and retirement 31 October 1938 (he had been promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1934). While acting as director of the Signal Corps Laboratories, Blair pioneered the work of radio direction finding on meteorological balloons and encouraged experimental work in infrared, heat detection, radio detection, and pulse equipment.
In the latter part of the 1920’s, Blair had outlined a need for radio detection as a means of identifying hostile aircraft. A complete workable radar set had been developed at Fort Monmouth and demonstrated for the Secretary of War and Congress by 1937. Locating and tracking targets by radio echoes is commonly regarded as one of the most important contributing factors to the Allied victory in WWII.
A top-secret security classification restricted Blair from applying for a patent for his radar pulse echo technique until June of 1945. When he finally applied, the Navy, IT&T, Raytheon, RCA, and others contested his claim. He was not officially credited with the invention of radar until 1957. On 20 August 1957 he received Patent No. 2,803,819, entitled “Object Locating System.” The government was given a royalty free license. Blair died 2 September 1962

The epicenter, located adjacent to the Nisqually River delta, was at the same location as the magnitude 7.1 earthquake on April 29, 1945. The state capital, Olympia, is located 18 km (11 mi) southwest of the epicenter.

I was sitting in that conference room with Eric Hussey and Rhonda Halffman and she had just said something to me about "taking me downtown" and that seemed odd. I cannot remember when she said that and when the earthquake stuck but it must have been within a few minutes. I think we were waiting for some other people to join the meeting and we were the first and the only ones who were in there at the time of the earthquake.

King County remembers Nisqually earthquake
10 years later, residents are reminded they can never be too prepared
Ten years ago, on February 28, 2001, the Nisqually Earthquake shook the Puget Sound region. The magnitude 6.8 tremor was one of the largest in Washington state history, and caused extensive damage throughout King County and the Western Washington region. In the decade since, King County has undertaken a number of projects designed to protect life and property the next time the earth moves.
After the Nisqually quake, King County moved quickly to retrofit the courthouse to bring it up to current seismic standards. The improvements included pouring a new foundation and shear walls, putting in shock absorbers, and installing carbon-fiber reinforcing wrap on support columns.
“We couldn’t shut the courthouse down for the retrofit, so we had to do the work with the building still occupied,” said Brown. “It was sort of like doing an overhaul on your car while driving down the highway.”

I was also thinking again recently about the series finale episode of "Battlestar Galactica" and of how "Starbuck" knew the precise jump coordinates for the planet Earth. I was wondering if that plot element is based on what I was writing in my journal about how I would write down the sequence of numbers that had been written onto nuclear bombs that were a few hundred feet above the surface of downtown Seattle and I would do all that because time was frozen and I was the only one who could still freely move around.

The first notion I had was that I would then travel to Tiger, Washington, and on a road next to the river there, I would paint those number sequences on the side of the road. I might have first thought I would paint them on the side of a building next to that place in the road I was thinking of. Then over time, I started thinking I would write the numbers down on the underside of a bridge.

When I was asleep a few hours ago for a nap, just before I awoke, I clearly saw a tsunami rising above Seattle as I was riding as a passenger in that burgundy Buick car I used to have.
It remained high above the city as it progressed well into the city, meaning that it was going to travel very far inland.

Iraq may sue Israel for 1981 nuke attack

Iraq is reportedly considering ways to force Israel to pay reparations for launching airstrikes on its nuclear reactor near Baghdad.
Iraqi legislators are looking into adopting a resolution that would urge Tel Aviv to pay billions of dollars in compensations for its 1981 attack on the Osiraq (Tammuz) nuclear reactor, Iraqi daily al-Sabbah reported on Thursday.
The lawmakers leading the campaign say they have based their case on United Nations Security Council Resolution 487, insisting that the official UN condemnation gives Baghdad the right to appropriate money for what it has suffered.
Mohammed Naji Mohammed -- a member of parliament with the United Iraqi Alliance coalition -- is leading the campaign against Israel.
Israeli warplanes struck the Iraqi nuclear reactor in a surprise attack code-named Operation Opera in June 1981. Israeli officials at the time claimed that its operation was aimed at preventing then dictator Saddam Hussein from using the reactor weaponization.

CHAKOTAY: This could be the greatest anthropological find of my career. If there's an intelligent species down there, we'll be able to track their development, not just for days or weeks, but for centuries.

SEVEN: The planet has a tachyon core. It's produced a subspace particle field, which runs between the poles. Voyager's arrival disrupted that field.
CHAKOTAY: It looks like the ship's been caught in an eddy of some kind.
JANEWAY: It's worse than that. Voyager seems to have become the planet's third pole.
SEVEN: The imbalance is affecting the outer crust. I've picked up indications of high-frequency seismic activity.
CHAKOTAY: Caused by our presence?
SEVEN: Possibly.
JANEWAY: Does anybody live down there?
SEVEN: The atmosphere is having a scattering effect on our sensors.
CHAKOTAY: Is that vegetation?
SEVEN: According to sensors, yes.
JANEWAY: The tachyon core has created a space-time differential between the planet and the surrounding space. We're watching the seasons change in a matter of seconds.
SEVEN: For each second that passes on Voyager, nearly a day goes by on the planet.
JANEWAY: Scan for inhabitants.
SEVEN: I can't isolate individual lifeforms. It'll take time to correct for the space-time differential
CHAKOTAY: A couple of hundred years, maybe? If our orbit starts to decay, Voyager will begin to feel the effects of the differential and we'll begin aging hundreds of times faster than we would in normal space.
JANEWAY: Unless we want to live our lives in the blink of an eye, I suggest we find a way out of here.

CHAKOTAY: Look at the amount of iron being used in that city. That's ten times what you'd expect to see in a culture at this stage of development.
TORRES: Do you think they're using it to support their buildings?
CHAKOTAY: If you lived on a planet that wouldn't stop shaking, you might be doing the same thing. If they've reached this stage of industrial development, they must be observing us.
TORRES: The probe's impulse thrusters are starting to fail. At its present altitude, it's been operating for over two hundred years. Its orbit is becoming decayed.
CHAKOTAY: Initiate self-destruct.
TORRES: It disintegrated in the upper thermosphere. If they saw anything, it just looked like a shooting star.
