Quotes

Mrs. Brown: We're alike. I, too, believe that everyone should have a chance at a breathtaking piece of folly once in his life. I was twenty when they said a woman couldn't swim the Channel. You're twelve; you think a horse of yours can win the Grand National. Your dream has come early; but remember, Velvet, it will have to last you all the rest of your life.

EXECUTIVE SESSIONS OF THE SENATE PERMANENT SUBCOMMITTEE ON INVESTIGATIONS OF THE COMMITTEE ON GOVERNMENT OPERATIONS

McCarthy and the Army

The subcommittee's investigation of Communist infiltration of the army eventually focused on two principal subjects: Irving Peress, an army dentist, and Annie Lee Moss, a Pentagon file clerk. Both appeared only fleetingly before the subcommittee, but with considerable consequence.

During the autumn of 1953, the subcommittee had looked into charges of subversion and espionage at the Army Signal Corps laboratories at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. Security officers abruptly suspended forty-two employees as security risks, and Senator McCarthy began calling them as witnesses. Many had graduated from the engineering program at the City College of New York (CCNY) where they had sat in classes with Julius Rosenberg. Since Rosenberg had worked at Fort Monmouth during the Second World War, suspicions arose that he had operated a spy ring within the laboratories. Army officials at first cooperated with the investigation, with Secretary of the Army Robert T. Stevens and the army's counsel John G. Adams attending executive sessions. Relations grew strained, however, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower refused to allow army security board members to be identified and questioned by the subcommittee. The president withheld other requested materials on the grounds of executive privilege.

Discovering that an army dentist suspected of being a member of the Communist party had been promoted to major, and then honorably discharged, Senator McCarthy raised the question: ``Who promoted Peress?'' He further demanded the names of those who had cleared Peress' discharge. Peress' commanding officer, Brigadier General Ralph Zwicker, cited an executive order that forbade him from divulging such information. ``Then, General, you should be removed from any command,'' the chairman stormed. ``Any man who has been given the honor of being promoted to general and who says, `I will protect another general who protected Communists,' is not fit to wear that uniform, General.''

War with Iraq / Initial Assault

US Attacks Iraq

War to Oust Hussein Begins With Airstrikes

March 20, 2003 John Daniszewski and Edwin Chen Times Staff Writers

The United States launched a thundering bomb and missile attack on Baghdad at dawn today, targeting senior government leaders in what could become all-out war to drive Saddam Hussein from power and disarm Iraq.

Air raid sirens blared, and yellow-and-white tracers from Iraqi antiaircraft fire streaked across the city. Several large explosions rocked the capital, and a ball of fire flared in the southern sky. As the sun rose higher, street lights flickered out and the city fell into a ghostly silence.

"The opening stages of the disarmament of the Iraqi regime have begun," White House spokesman Ari Fleischer declared shortly after 9:30 p.m. Wednesday in Washington, or 5:30 a.m. in Baghdad. Forty-five minutes later, President Bush told the American people that he had ordered coalition forces to strike "selected targets of military importance" in Iraq.

U.S. CBO estimates $2.4 trillion long-term war costs

WASHINGTON Wed Oct 24, 2007 1:29pm EDT

(Reuters) - The U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan could cost taxpayers a total of $2.4 trillion by 2017 when counting the huge interest costs because combat is being financed with borrowed money, according to a study released on Wednesday.

With President George W. Bush indicating a large contingent of U.S. troops likely will be engaged in Iraq and Afghanistan for many years to come, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated the total tab for the wars from 2001 through 2017.

CBO estimated that interest costs alone from 2001-2017 could total more than $700 billion.

So far, Congress has given Bush $604 billion for the two wars, with about $412 billion spent in Iraq, according to CBO, which is Congress' in-house budget analyst. In Iraq alone, the United States is spending about $11 billion a month, with costs escalating.

Bush is seeking another $196 billion for combat in Iraq and Afghanistan through September 30 and Congress is expected to debate that request over the next few months.

CBO estimated that between 2008 and 2017, the wars could cost slightly more than $1 trillion, assuming overall troop strength is cut to 75,000 by 2013.

Currently, there are about 170,000 U.S. troops in Iraq and another 26,000 in Afghanistan.

Finance charges for the money already spent on the war will total $415 billion from 2001 to 2017, according to CBO. For the next decade, "interest outlays would increase by a total of $290 billion over that 10-year period," CBO told the House Budget Committee, which is reviewing long-term war costs.

"To put it all on our credit cards with no accountability, with no plan to pay for it, I think is the height of irresponsibility," said Rep. James McGovern, a Massachusetts Democrat who serves on the budget panel and is an outspoken war critic. "It will be just one more toxic legacy of this disastrous war we will have to leave our kids to clean up."
