Plant Growth and Plant Phototropism

Two similar proposals were submitted by Donald W. Schlack of Downey High School, Downey, Calif., and Joel G. Wordekemper of Central Catholic High School, West Point, Nebr. Wordekemper was interested in discovering how the roots and stems of germinating seedlings would orient themselves without the influence of gravity in Skylab. Schlack's idea was to germinate seedlings within an enclosed cell of agar, exposed to light from only one side to determine if phototropism would influence the direction of growth of both stems and roots in the absence of gravity. He also suggested that exposing different seedlings to various light intensities would determine the illumination level required to produce the phototropic effect. The objectives of these two experiments were similar enough that they could be accommodated in a common experiment.

When I reflected on what I might say on this great occasion many thoughts and feelings came to my mind, but I do not find it easy to express them adequately. So I must ask your forgiveness if I fail to do justice to the occasion.

Foremost there is the deep sense of gratitude and pleasure for having been found worthy of this high distinction by the Caroline Institute. I am also anxious to offer my sincere thanks to the Nobel Foundation, and in fact to all Sweden, for the warmth and friendliness of your welcome, and the generosity and considerateness of your hospitality which you have extended also to my wife and three children. There have been many occasions in these last few days when we felt deeply moved.

The research I have been doing - studying how foodstuffs yield energy in living cells - does not lead to the kind of knowledge that can be expected to give immediate practical benefits to mankind. If I have chosen this field of study, it was because I believed in its importance in spite of its theoretical character. My reason for this belief was that all living things must be continuously fed with energy and I am convinced that an understanding of the process of energy production

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Thank you so much. (Applause.) Thank you. Please be seated. To President Bush and Mrs. Bush; to President Clinton and now-former Secretary Clinton; to President George H.W. Bush and Mrs. Bush; to President and Mrs. Carter; to current and former world leaders and all the distinguished guests here today -- Michelle and I are honored to be with you to mark this historic occasion.

This is a Texas-sized party. And that’s worthy of what we’re here to do today: honor the life and legacy of the 43rd President of the United States, George W. Bush.

When all the living former Presidents are together, it’s also a special day for our democracy. We’ve been called “the world’s most exclusive club” -- and we do have a pretty nice clubhouse. But the truth is, our club is more like a support group. The last time we all got together was just before I took office. And I needed that. Because as each of these leaders will tell you, no matter how much you may think you’re ready to assume the office of the presidency, it’s impossible to truly understand the nature of the job until it’s yours, until you’re sitting at that desk.

And that’s why every President gains a greater appreciation for all those who served before him; for the leaders from both parties who have taken on the momentous challenges and felt the enormous weight of a nation on their shoulders. And for me, that appreciation very much extends to President Bush.

The first thing I found in that desk the day I took office was a letter from George, and one that demonstrated his compassion and generosity. For he knew that I would come to learn what he had learned -- that being President, above all, is a humbling job. There are moments where you make mistakes. There are times where you wish you could turn back the clock. And what I know is true about President Bush, and I hope my successor will say about me, is that we love this country and we do our best.

Now, in the past, President Bush has said it’s impossible to pass judgment on his presidency while he’s still alive. So maybe this is a little bit premature. But even now, there are certain things that we know for certain.

We know about the son who was raised by two strong, loving parents in Midland, famously inheriting, as he says, “my daddy’s eyes and my mother’s mouth.” (Laughter.)
