But she, nor anyone, was certainly giving me a kiss when I was literally at the edge. But I do remember, with no real bearing on this topic, sitting there in Gas Works during that 24 hour period when one of the tour boats passed by me on one of its many trips and it was flying a Jolly Rogers on the stern. I thought it was no coincidence.

Entry from April 01, 2005

“The Only Way to See New York” (Circle Line)

The Circle Line (http://www.circleline.com) runs sightseeing cruises around Manhattan, and to other points. It's been in business since 1945.

"The only way to see New York - Circle it on the Circle Line" is its advertising jingle. It isn't the ONLY way to see New York, of course, but it's a good one.

29 April 1947, New York Times, pg. 55:

The Circle Line, which has been running a sightseeing cruise around Manhattan Island since April 5, said it intended to operate as many as five vessels by midsummer. Trips around the island will be augmented by charter voyages and moonlight sails.

8 July 1947, New York Times, "Boat Trips on City's Many Waters Provide Outings to Dreamy Places" by Meyer Berger, pg. 27:

The Circle Line operates oil-burning yachts in Around-Manhattan Cruises that last three hours each, with lecturers pointing out highlights. This trip takes you under all the bridges, through Harlem River, East River, Hudson River and New York Bay. The trip costs $2, including tax. (...) This is the best way to see New York City, particularly the waterfront and the ocean liners.

25 March 1982, New York Times, pg. C18:

THE ONLY WAY TO SEE NEW YORK,

CIRCLE IT ON THE CIRCLE LINE.
