AHA! The deck plating in Missile Plot. That has got to be it, something about the deck plating.

http://spaceflight1.nasa.gov/shuttle/reference/sodb/2-4d.pdf

So if I am reading that schematic correctly, the area above and outside of the landing gear is one of the places where you could enter the shuttle, aside from the regular entrances, so denoted for emergency entry I guess.

I'm not sure what that means. But if that is what it means, then you would actually be able to enter the compartment with the landing gear in it from inside the shuttle. And my memories of pulling up the deck tiles in Missile Plot on Wainwright must be something relevant.

There was that comment Scotty made about the Enterprise deck plates, I think in that TNG episode where he is rescued from transporter limbo.

Yeah, that's what they are calling them:

Moldline penetrations/access panels

Maybe this is why but I am not certain. The notion about the bricks also always reminds me of the tiles that make up the space shuttle heat shield.

"the hungry beach." That's where I got that. When did I say that about the waves on Alki Beach? Last year? This is probably something that is in the memory of Thomas Ray, but Kerry Burgess doesn't remember studying it. I remember studying Shakespeare, but not this one.

Fillip the stars; then let the mutinous winds
Strike the proud cedars 'gainst the fiery sun

As soon as I read this paragraph, and envisioned the gear cycling up as described, I remember that connector I wrote about on the Taylor, the one that I made from the cable in the deck to the one from the helicopter hovering over my head. I wrote a while back that I was the first one to perform that exercise on the Taylor. It was tricky because we never got to practice it before the actually event.

http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/shuttle/reference/shutref/orbiter/lgear/overview.html

For retraction, each gear is hydraulically rotated forward and up during ground operations until it engages an uplock hook for each gear in its respective wheel well. The uplock hook locks onto a roller on each strut. Mechanical linkage driven by each landing gear mechanically closes the respective landing gear doors. All three landing gear doors have high-temperature reusable surface insulation thermal protection system tiles bonded to their outer surface with thermal barriers to protect and prevent the landing gear and wheel well from the high-temperature thermal loads encountered during the shuttle's entry into the atmosphere.

This part suggests that, if I did do something to get the gear down, I had very little time to get the job done.

http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/shuttle/reference/shutref/orbiter/lgear/overview.html

The landing gears are deployed only after the spacecraft has an indicated airspeed of less than 300 knots (345 mph) and an altitude of approximately 250 feet.

I wanted to write about something else a few days ago that I forget to mention that seems relevant. I was writing about the time, which seems associated with STS-1, when the toilet backed up in that house on De Quincy. It had overflowed onto the floor and all the tiles on the bathroom floor started coming unglued and after a short period, were completely attached. I remember, for some reason, that mom laughed about how I fixed it. I started nailing down the tiles until I ran out of nails. She thought that was funny and I wondered why. I thought it was a good idea. She said she was going to get the landlord to fix them. I started thinking yesterday that I am remembering something about the heat shield tiles on the shuttle but I'm not sure what this memory actually represents. If I'm not mistaken, the shuttle tiles are glued, just as those bathroom floor tiles were supposed to be. Maybe I remembering some kind of suggestion I made to bolt down the missing tiles as we prepared to return to Earth in 1981.

And I must not have been badly hurt after that supposed fall from the landing shuttle because I apparently was flying over Baghdad only a couple months later.

In the theme of falling out of the shuttle, there is that scene in "First Contact" where Data jumps down several stories to where Lilly is shooting at them.

This could be about that theory I wrote about earlier. There is that failed launch of my F-14 Tomcat that left me hanging by my parachute from the superstructure of the aircraft carrier. In my artificial and symbolic memory, I was sitting on a topside deck on the superstructure under the fire-control radar of the Taylor and I was reading a book and the Captain and some other crew were running up or at least, they seemed to be in a hurry and I wondered what the commotion was about. They saw me sitting there reading a book and that seemed to be why they were there. The reality is probably that I almost got cooked by the aircraft carriers radar and this artificial memory could be of that event. It always reminds me of something vague, real or artificial, that I never can remember.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: July 31, 2006

I started thinking again about that time on the Wainwright when I was topside up on the superstructure helping Larry Johnson work on one of his WDS antennas. I pulled off the fiberglass, canopy-shaped cover, and it almost pulled me over the side when the wind caught it. I wonder if that represents falling out of the shuttle as the WDS contained a lot of parts that remind me of the heat tiles on the shuttle.

ON a recent morning, royal courtiers, brows furrowed, escorted a reporter to the top of Buckingham Palace to point out some troubling disrepair: cracks scarring part of the palace’s yellow, chalky facade, where a shoebox-sized chunk of stone had toppled from the roof, narrowly missing Princess Anne’s car, and myriad tiles needing replacement. Alas, the House of Windsor, just like any other family down the street, is also struggling with a leaky roof.

ATP synthase

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

ATP synthase (EC 3.6.3.14) is an important enzyme that provides energy for the cell to use through the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is the most commonly used "energy currency" of cells from most organisms. It is formed from adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and inorganic phosphate (Pi), and needs energy.

George McElroy

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Captain George Edward Henry McElroy MC and Two Bars, DFC and Bar (b. 14 May 1893 — d. 31 July 1918) was a leading ace fighter pilot of the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force during World War I. He was credited with 47 aerial victories.

Death in action

McElroy's continued apparent disregard for his own safety when flying and fighting could have only one end. On the 31st, he reported destroying a Hannover C for his 47th victory. He then set out again. He failed to return from this flight and was posted missing. Later it was learned that McElroy had been killed by ground fire. He was 25 years old.

McElroy would receive the Distinguished Flying Cross posthumously on 3 August, citing his shooting down 35 aeroplanes and three observation balloons. The Bar would arrive still later, on 21 September, and would laud his low-level attacks. In summary, McElroy shot down four enemy planes in flames and destroyed 23 others, one of which he shared destroyed with other pilots. He drove down 16 enemy craft "out of control" and out of the fight; in one of those cases, it was a shared success. He also destroyed three balloons.

He wanted to be captured at the restaurant.
He would never get a Shakespeare quote wrong.
No.
His mother was a Shakespearian actress.
- His father is a doctor.
- A doctor, huh? So when Bob collapsed in the courtroom I remember.
his father could take that opportunity to inject Bob with a powerful drug that simulated death.
It was a diabolical scheme, and every member of his family played a part! Are you done? 'Cause I've been circling the funeral home - for ten minutes.
- Yes.
Cool, I found a trapdoor that leads to an underground city.
Here I go! Oh, my God, it's beautiful! - Are you buying this?

So, they decided they'd better sit down and talk this over before they had an accident. They became good friends. They found they had a lot of interests in common. Radio. Television. Trains.
