% Brockman interviews the Nahasapeemapetilons at their apartment. In
% the background are piles of baby supplies and furniture.
Brockman: How do you feel about this avalanche of free merchandise?
Manjula: Oh, the companies are so generous. Except the Q-tip people. They only gave us three crates. They can rot in hell.
Apu: But the good folks at Sony, [blows a kiss]. Their giant TV will really help us love our babies.
[turns on the Channel 3 news, where a reporter is giving a special report]
Reporter: [on TV] I'm here at Shelbyville Hospital, where a local woman has just given birth to nine -- that's right -- nine babies.
[Apu and Manjula gasp]
Husband: Some say eight babies is a blessing, but they don't know joy of nine.
Reporter 2: Would you say you're on cloud nine?
Husband + Wife: We're on cloud nine!
[crowd of reporters say, "aw"]
Apu: [back in the apartment] Oh, they even have a better sound bite than us.
Manjula: Nine babies? That's barbaric!
Forklift Op.: Nonuplets? Now that's something you don't see every day.
Worker: Let's get this stuff to the real heroes -- the Shelbyville Nine!

% Now, Apu is so desperate he asks Homer for advice, as Homer cooks
% two (unopened) cans of beans on the barbecue.
Apu: You know, Homer, you might want to open those cans before they explode.
Homer: But the cans seal in the flavor.
Apu: Okay. [grabs a garbage can lid, and uses it to shield himself]
Homer: So, how's the tribe coming along? Any papooses?
Apu: No, still no luck. Tell me, Homer, did you have to take any special steps when you decided to have children?
Homer: Decided? [laughs] That's classic! Decided

Alfred Henry Sturtevant
American geneticist
Alfred Henry Sturtevant, (born Nov. 21, 1891, Jacksonville, Ill., U.S.—died April 5, 1970, Pasadena, Calif.), American geneticist who in 1913 developed a technique for mapping the location of specific genes of the chromosomes in the fruit fly Drosophila.
Sturtevant received his Ph.D. degree (1914) from Columbia University. While serving as a researcher at the Carnegie Institution of Washington, D.C. (1915–28), he proved that the mechanism of crossing-over (i.e., the exchange of genes between chromosomes) could be prevented in Drosophila. In 1928 he joined the faculty of the California Institute of Technology, where he remained until his death. He was one of the first to warn against the hazards of fallout as a consequence of nuclear bomb testing.

Attorneys paint different views of Smith in opener
RICK BRAGG New York Times
WED 07/19/1995 HOUSTON CHRONICLE
UNION, S.C. - The prosecution urged the jurors at the Susan Smith trial to hold on to their common sense in the weeks ahead, and they would come to see Smith as a selfish, malicious killer who sacrificed her children for the love of the son of a rich industrialist.
The defense begged them to look into their hearts and, through that softer focus, find a disturbed, childlike figure who, after a lifetime of sadness, snapped like a dry twig.
As simplistic as those opposing views might seem, they will be the crux of the next month of testimony in Smith's capital murder trial, which officially began Tuesday with opening statements in the elegant old Union County Courthouse.
"For nine days in the fall of 1994, Susan Smith looked this country in the eyes and lied," said Keith Giese, a special prosecutor and assistant to the state's prosecutor, Tommy Pope. "She begged God to return her children to safety, and the whole time she knew her children were lying dead at the bottom of John D. Long Lake.

Alan B. Shepard, Jr.
American astronaut
Alan B. Shepard, Jr., in full Alan Bartlett Shepard, Jr. (born November 18, 1923, East Derry, New Hampshire, U.S.—died July 21, 1998, Monterey, California), first U.S. astronaut to travel in space.
Shepard graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland, in 1944 and served in the Pacific during World War II onboard the destroyer Cogswell. He earned his naval aviator wings in 1947, qualified as a test pilot in 1951, and experimented with high-altitude aircraft, in-flight fueling systems, and landings on angled carrier decks. In 1957 he graduated from the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island. In 1959 he became one of the original seven astronauts chosen for the U.S. Mercury program by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
On May 5, 1961, Shepard made a 15-minute suborbital flight in the Freedom 7 spacecraft, which reached an altitude of 115 miles (185 km). The flight came 23 days after Soviet cosmonaut Yury Gagarin became the first human to travel in space, but Shepard’s flight energized U.S. space efforts and made him a national hero.
Shepard was selected as command pilot for the first manned Gemini mission, Gemini 3, but he was grounded in 1964 because of Ménière disease, an ailment that affects the inner ear. In 1969 he underwent corrective surgery that allowed him to return to full flight status.
Shepard commanded the Apollo 14 flight (January 31–February 9, 1971; with Stuart A. Roosa and Edgar D. Mitchell), which involved the first landing in the lunar Fra Mauro highlands. Near the end of his Moon walk, Shepard—an avid golfer—swung at two golf balls with a makeshift six-iron club as a playful demonstration for live television cameras of the weak lunar gravity. Shepard headed NASA’s astronaut office from 1963 to 1969 and then from 1971 to 1974, when he retired from the navy as a rear admiral and from the space program to undertake a career in private business in Texas. He received numerous awards, including the NASA Distinguished Service Medal and the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.
