Senna

Several weeks ago, Buzz, I thought about watching this film because of a sleeping dream I woke from. The speed was tremendous in the dream.

And, now, I think again, hours later today after I began crafting this specific blog post, I gotta stop watching FX's "The Americans" when I'm drunk. 10:49 PM: I sure don't understand that.

The American Presidency Project

Gerald Ford

XXXVIII President of the United States: 1974 - 1977

412 - Telephone Conversation With Apollo-Soyuz Test Project Crews Following Rendezvous and Docking of the Spacecraft.

July 17, 1975

GENTLEMEN, let me call to express my very great admiration for your hard work, your total dedication in preparing for this first joint flight.

All of us here in Washington, in the United States send to you our very warmest congratulations for your successful rendezvous and for your docking, and we wish you the very best for a successful completion of the remainder of your mission.

Your flight is a momentous event and a very great achievement, not only for the five of you but also for the thousands of American and Soviet scientists and technicians who have worked together for 3 years to ensure the success of this very historic and very successful experiment in international cooperation.

It has taken us many years to open this door to useful cooperation in space between our two countries, and I am confident that the day is not far off when space missions made possible by this first joint effort will be more or less commonplace.

We all. look forward to your safe return, and we follow with great interest the success so far, and we look forward to talking with you on Earth again when you do end your flight.

General Stafford, Tom, now that you have had an opportunity to test the new docking system, do you think it will be suitable for future international manned space flight?

BRIG. GEN. THOMAS P. STAFFORD. Yes, sir, Mr. President, I sure do. Out of the three docking systems I have used, this was the smoothest one so far. It worked beautifully.

THE PRESIDENT. About 3 1/2 hours ago I sat here in the Oval Office and watched the docking procedure. It looked awfully simple from here. I am sure it wasn't that simple for the five of you.

Let me say a word or two, if I might, to Colonel Leonov. The docking was a critical phase of the joint mission. Colonel, could you describe it, and would you describe the reaction of the crews on meeting in Space after such a long preparation?

COL. ALEKSEI LEONOV. Mr. President, I am sure that our joint flight is the beginning for future explorations in space between our countries. Thank you very much for very nice words to us. We will do our best.

THE PRESIDENT. Colonel, I think you and the other four have done very, very well so far, and may I congratulate you and your associates on this great achievement.

Now, Mr. Slayton, Deke, you have had a very, very long record of distinguished service preparing other astronaut crews for various space missions, and we are extremely pleased to see you on the crew of the first international manned space flight. As the world's oldest space rookie, do you have any advice for young people who hope to fly on future space missions? Deke, did you have a chance to hear my question?

DONALD K. SLAYTON. No, sir, Mr. President, unfortunately.

THE PRESIDENT. Can I repeat it?

MR. SLAYTON. Tom just repeated it for me, sir.

Well, yes, I have a lot of advice for young people, but I guess probably one of the most important bits is to, number one, decide what you really want to do and then, secondly, never give up until you have done it.

THE PRESIDENT. Well, you are a darn good example, Deke, of never giving up and continuing, and I know it is a great feeling of success from your point of view to have made this flight and to be on board with your four associates.

MR. SLAYTON. Yes, sir.

THE PRESIDENT. Vance Brand, I know that you are still in the Apollo and holding the fort there. It has been my observation that the crews on both sides have worked very hard to learn either Russian on the one hand or English on the other. Has this training period, which is so important, stood the test in the complicated procedures that all of you must execute in this very delicate mission?

VANCE BRAND. Mr. President, I believe it really has. I think in a way our project and, in particular, the training that we have undergone has been sort of a model for future similar projects.

I think it has been a real pleasant experience to work on learning Russian and to be able to work with the cosmonauts, and I think we will have some ideas that would probably help people in the future on similar paths.

THE PRESIDENT. Thank you very much, Vance.

I might like to say a word or two to Valery Kubasov, the other member of the cosmonaut crew. I might say to him, as well as Colonel Leonov, I remember both of you on that enjoyable Saturday last September when both crews visited the White House and joined me in a picnic over in Virginia. We flew from the White House over to this picnic just across the river. We had some crab specialties that I enjoyed, and I think you did.

I am sure you are having a little different menu, somewhat different food on this occasion. What are you having over there out in space?

VALERY KUBASOV. We get good space food. There is some Russian food, some Russian music, some juice, some coffee, and a lot of water--no beer, no crab.

THE PRESIDENT. Well, let me say in conclusion we look forward to your safe return. It has been a tremendous demonstration of cooperation between our scientists, our technicians, and of course, our astronauts and their counterparts, the cosmonauts from the Soviet Union.

I congratulate everybody connected with the flight, and particularly the five of you who are setting this outstanding example of what we have to do in the future to make it a better world.

And may I say in signing off, here is to a soft landing..

MR. KUBASOV. Thank you very much.

GENERAL STAFFORD. Thank you, Mr. President. It certainly has been an honor to serve the country and work here.

THE PRESIDENT. We will see you when you get back.

GENERAL STAFFORD. Yes, sir.

Note: The President spoke at 3:37 p.m. from the Oval Office at the White House. The conversation was broadcast live on radio and television.

Senna (2010)

The first year at McLaren
was very decisive in Ayrton's life.
He was very tense,
it was like he had the weight of the world
on his shoulders
because now he had a responsibility
to prove he really was a top driver.
Ayrton has, for the first time in his career,
the car able to be World Champion,
and he doesn't want to
let his chance go anywhere.
- That's normal and that is going to push us.
- What about you?
- What about you?
- It's a little bit different.
So, you're going to let it go?
I have a little bit more pressure than...
You put me more pressure.
I think you could see smiles,
but at the same time
some slightly strange body language,
as they realized just where they were
and what was going to unfold.
Alain, who obviously felt
he was well-nested down at McLaren,
and the young pretender coming in
and clearly threatening that position.

The car balanced itself.
Each corner was controlled by a computer.
All the driver had to do was put his
right foot down and go as fast as possible,
so in a car without that,
you were at a serious disadvantage.
McLaren are still well off
the Williams-Renault pace,
with the result that
three times World Champion Ayrton Senna
has no chance of retaining his title.
When you go into this sort of
electronic war,
you can find yourself completely stuck.

I think it was his strongest year.
He won seven races,
constantly on pole position.
The intensity was every bit as high as ever.
But there just seemed to be

a further bit of growth.
But then the car bit him hard.
For the first time he really thought

That reminds me of something I said to Vince Maraia at Microsoft in February 2002. I told him that I had been feeling something like invincibility until I had that second bicycle accident on 2/1/02 and hit my head. He said something in response that suggests to me he knows who I really was but he said that I should be feeling invincible.

Had a vivid dream a few hours ago. The was several of us in training to rescue a hostage from a large group of armed men. The part I remember the most was of some kind of parachute training where I jumped off a tall building. I was wearing the khaki uniform of a U.S. Navy officer. I think Mogge was the guy I remember getting medical training. I didn’t really expect we were going to get the guy out alive but that was our objective.

Hey....I just realized something...these screen captures, especially the one where Jack seems to be looking up at the trees after awaking from the crash.....it reminds of what I wrote about being passed out under the sink after that party. It was the anniversary party for Mogge and his wife in that cabin by the lake near Charleston. Tom Huston hit me on the head with the door.

The Borg, it goes without saying are terrorists. I have constructed this world to make it easier to cope with the ongoing mind-terrorism. I had some really bad dreams last night, the first I can remember in a long time. I have some uncomfortable dreams that left me feeling bad, but these last night, that I don't remember now, were really bad dreams. That is a sign the Borg are winning. And these excerpts are reflections of the Borg. I have constructed this world to sort of minimize them to make it easier to cope with. But they are real and this is a reflection of those that are trying to break my mind:

http://www.reagan.utexas.edu/archives/speeches/1986/53186a.htm

Radio Address to the Nation on Terrorism
May 31, 1986
My fellow Americans:

History is likely to record that 1986 was the year when the world, at long last, came to grips with the plague of terrorism. For too long, the world was paralyzed by the argument that terrorism could not be stopped until the grievances of terrorists were addressed. The complicated and heartrending issues that perplex mankind are no excuse for violent, inhumane attacks, nor do they excuse not taking aggressive action against those who deliberately slaughter innocent people.

In our world there are innumerable groups and organizations with grievances, some justified, some not. Only a tiny fraction has been ruthless enough to try to achieve their ends through vicious and cowardly acts of violence upon unarmed victims. Perversely, it is often the terrorists themselves who prevent peacefully negotiated solutions. So, perhaps the first step in solving some of these fundamental challenges in getting to the root cause of conflict is to declare that terrorism is not an acceptable alternative and will not be tolerated.

Effective antiterrorist action has also been thwarted by the claim that -- as the quip goes -- ``One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.'' That's a catchy phrase, but also misleading. Freedom fighters do not need to terrorize a population into submission. Freedom fighters target the military forces and the organized instruments of repression keeping dictatorial regimes in power. Freedom fighters struggle to liberate their citizens from oppression and to establish a form of government that reflects the will of the people. Now, this is not to say that those who are fighting for freedom are perfect or that we should ignore problems arising from passion and conflict. Nevertheless, one has to be blind, ignorant, or simply unwilling to see the truth if he or she is unable to distinguish between those I just described and terrorists. Terrorists intentionally kill or maim unarmed civilians, often women and children, often third parties who are not in any way part of a dictatorial regime. Terrorists are always the enemies of democracy.

There's that photo of me jumping off the deck of the Wainwright into the ocean. Mogge and George Campbell are to my left, jumping at the same time. I keeping that I was jumping onto something, instead of what the photo tells me, which is that I am jumping into the ocean. I wonder if that represents me jumping onto the landing gear cover to get it open and then falling through. But since we don't need wheels and tires in the future a thousand years from now, especially on our space craft, I'm not sure what this means.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 9/8/2006 8:12 AM
I wrote a while back about that time Mogge hit me with that tripod. He was carrying it around for his camera as we were sight-seeing during liberty when we were deployed to the Med. Maybe that represents him carrying a tripod for that Mark 19 grenade launcher, with me carrying the launcher. I have thought a lot about that over the past few hours. Some kind of sniper type of operation far behind enemy lines during the first Gulf War.

Am I being prompted to remember all this? Is that what this is about? Am I supposed to remember?

[JOURNAL ARCHIVE 08 September 2006 excerpt ends]

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 10/15/2006 2:32 PM
Actually, Mogge told me he had moved with his new wife to a house on Lake Wylie last time I talked to him in 2004. It was when I was there in Charlotte in 2001 that he was living at Paces River.

[JOURNAL ARCHIVE 15 October 2006 excerpt ends]

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 10/15/2006 9:20 PM
Consistent with that theory I wrote earlier today about Mogge is a detail I just noticed on the map. I ran into Mogge after I got out of the Navy because he and his wife Andrea had moved into the Clemson, SC, area. I was working in a First Federal bank branch in Seneca, SC, to repair a computer on the drive-through teller line. I can’t remember that girl’s name that I was repairing the computer for but I remember her last name was Edgar. We went out a few times right before I started dating Tracie Rhodes. So anyway, I was standing there at the drive-through window and I saw Mark and Andrea in their pickup outside looking in at me. I went out there to talk them after they pulled into the parking lot. I remember I was driving my Plymouth

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 01/03/07 6:32 PM
And when I was thinking about that last part, I was also thinking again about Andrea Kea Mogge. That was Mark Mogge's first wife. Kea was her middle name and is pronounced "key." She was from Orangeburg, SC, and was a pharmacist.

[JOURNAL ARCHIVE 03 January 2007 excerpt ends]

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 01/19/07 8:19 PM
Maybe that is what that "memory" means I wrote about a while back. The one where that guy seemed to have heat stroke or heat exhaustion on the Wainwright and Mogge called me over to look at him as he was lying on the deck in the middle passageway in Missile Plot. I can't "remember" his name but I "remember" he was from Chile. There was that time he was on the helo deck, as a chain-and-chockman as I was on the USS Taylor, when the helo crashed. I wrote a while back wondering if, because I "remember" that he was from Chile, because it has something to do with the Falklands in 1982. Maybe that "memory" represents me saving a wounded soldier during that war. I have been thinking that I went out into a minefield to carry him out.

[JOURNAL ARCHIVE 19 January 2007 excerpt ends]

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 02/27/07 1:36 PM
Are all of my "memories" of Bahrain about the time I returned to port with the Stark after it had been hit by the missiles?

I "remember" sitting in a bar with Mogge after we had pulled into port and had liberty. I had been up all night on watch and my shift ended just as we got to port. I was sitting there in the bar and couldn't stay awake. An Australian sailor pointed at me to one of his buddies when I fell asleep. At one other point, we got the band to play "Hotel California" but they were all just lip-synching to vocals and the instruments. One of those times was when Mogge took a picture of me sitting on a pink Rolls Royce that belonged to a princess.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 02/27/07 3:30 PM
The Kuwait invasion is listed as 8/2/90. Was that Kuwait time or U.S. time?

Life can be very difficult in Brazil.
You have...
Brazil have all the extremes.
You have the fantastic nature.
You can have all the good material things
that money can buy.
But at the same time,
you have lots of problems.
Social problems and poverty.
Some violence as a consequence.
I try to help
a little bit. For children, particularly.
Because Ayrton
was so widely known in Brazil,
many people would ask him for help,
personal requests, hospitals,
charities would ask him for help for instance.
Ayrton would donate
and keep it going without fail.
But, he no longer
wanted to make random donations.
He wanted to develop something,
plan it, organize it,
to help Brazil

Because I face the enemy.
