Verona

The spotlight was already on me in 1999 just because Microsoft needed a better as it was. And George W. Bush’s desire to develop his own manly image only strengthen the spotlight because Microsoft wanted him, and his Republican connections, as an ally in the government. So that would have been going on in 2000. But the antitrust ruling was in 2000 as well, but importantly on June 7th, and while it was the right thing for Jackson to do, it gave Microsoft a reason to bug my apartment at Limestone. They probably had my Verona apartment bugged too. Although I don’t think there is any ‘probably’ to that; rather it is a certainty. They were tracking me well before I lived there. I don’t think it is a coincidence that my next door neighborhood at Verona worked at Microsoft too. I am certain they transferred her and her family out of state, to Florida, to keep them from being investigated by Washington State investigators.

Before Verona, I was living at Oakwood. I lived at Verona in 1999 and possibility the first month or two of 2000, although I’m not sure about 2000. I know that I lived at Verona the summer of 2000 and moved out in November 2000

After that, I stayed for a while at a place called Pacific Inn. One day, when I was a TAM, I caught a clue that Grace Stahre knew I had lived there. I remember that I wasn’t living there at the time, having moved to the next place. Pacific Place is situated at the corner of NE 3rd Street and 112th Ave NE in Bellevue.

I moved from there to Oakwood Apartments in Bellevue. The building is situated next to the roads 110th Ave NE, NE 10th Street, and NE 9th Street.

Then I moved to Verona, which is situated on NE 11th Street, 112th Ave NE, and NE 12th Street.

Well, this makes no sense. I wrote a while back, and still believed until today, that I picked up that songs "Clocks" around the time I watched Patrick Stewart's "Safe House" on Showtime when I lived at Verona. I can't remember precisely when I watched it, but I moved into Limestone in November 2000, so it was most likely during the year 2000. I can still visualize watching Showtime in that Verona apartment and hearing the music to that song.

ON THIS DAY 28 January

1982: US general rescued from Red Brigade

Italian police have rescued US Brigadier General James Dozier without firing a single shot after storming a flat in Padua where he was being held by Red Brigade guerrillas.

The 50-year-old general and deputy Chief of Staff at Nato's Southern European land forces headquarters at Verona, emerged after 42 days in captivity unharmed, but thinner and with a beard.

Police had been watching the flat in Padua for three days. The decision was taken to go in this morning at 1136 local time.

A squad of specially-trained officers broke down the door of the five-room apartment and confronted the five terrorists, including a woman, who surrendered immediately.

Posing as plumbers

The general was gagged, barefoot and wearing a tracksuit. He was inside a tent. One of the terrorists, who was standing pointing a gun at the general's head, was quickly overpowered.

The general's first words are reported to have been: "Thanks, thanks, marvellous, ok, police."

He was allowed to telephone his wife, who is in West Germany and the US Ambassador in Rome before being taken to an American military base near Verona.

His Red Brigade kidnappers are said to include the Venice leader, Antonio Savasta, and his partner, Emilia Libera. A third suspect was identified as Cesare Leonardo. The other two remain unidentified.

The left-wing Red Brigade was set up in the 1970s following the failure of the New Left government.

It has sought to highlight its cause by kidnapping and murdering prominent Italian politicians and other senior figures, including former prime minister Aldo Moro in 1978.

Courageous soldier

Police seized a number of guns, hand grenades, explosives and ammunition from the flat.

The general's wife, Judith, and 24-year-old daughter Cheryl, are being flown from West Germany to be reunited with him.

US President Ronald Reagan has hailed the general as a "courageous soldier whose life has been dedicated to the defence of liberty" and said his rescue was "a happy ending, the prayers of millions of Americans have been answered."

The general was captured in December. Members of the Red Brigade posing as plumbers called at his flat on the sixth floor of an apartment block in Verona.

He tried to fight off the intruders, but was hit on the head with a pistol and forced into a trunk, which was loaded into the boot of a car.

He was the first foreigner to be captured by the Red Brigade. There were rumours a ransom had been demanded of up to £4.5m.

In Context

A week later Brigadier General James Dozier was flown back to the United States, where he received a hero's welcome.

At his first news conference after his release, General Dozier admitted he had been warned about the possibility of a kidnap attempt but he had been "too busy" to take any notice of the threats.

During his captivitiy he described how he had been chained by his left foot and right hand to the central pole of a small tent, within the flat in Padua. He said his captors treated him with "businesslike indifference" but they kept their faces covered so he could not identify them.

General kidnapped in 1981 holds emotional reunion with liberators

ROME BY PHILIP PULLELLA

(Reuters) - For 42 days three decades ago, U.S. General James Lee Dozier was the world's most famous hostage and his captors, the Red Brigades, were Europe's most feared and bloody terrorist organization.

Dozier, now 80, has come back to Italy, perhaps for the last time, to meet the members of the police special operations unit who liberated him in one of the most daring rescue raids of those dramatic years in Italian history.

"If it weren't for guys like these I wouldn't be here," he told Reuters last Saturday at an emotional 30-year reunion with the 13-man SWAT team that saved him on the cold but clear morning of January 28, 1982.

Thirty years on, the members of the once svelte and swift squad that saved him have lost some of their hair, put on weight and become grandfathers. But no one can forget.

Say Dozier's name to any Italian old enough to remember and they will tell you it brings back dark memories of the country's "Years of Lead," when the ultra-leftist Red Brigades kidnapped, maimed and killed politicians and business leaders as part of their war against the state.

Dozier, then NATO's deputy chief of staff for land forces for Southern Europe and based in Verona, was the biggest fish the Red Brigades nabbed after former Prime Minister Aldo Moro, who they held for 55 days in 1978 before killing him.

Dozier knows he was probably destined to meet Moro's fate had it not been for the raid led by Major Edoardo Perna on an apartment in the northern city of Padua where five Red Brigades guerrillas had held Dozier prisoner in a tent.

"This is something that I live with almost perpetually. But in a way it's cathartic," Dozier said. "You know, you keep thinking about it and I'm told by psychologists that is one of the best medicines - keep thinking about it and don't worry about it."

Dozier was kidnapped in his apartment in Verona on December 17, 1981 by four Red Brigades' guerrillas masquerading as plumbers. One held a gun to his wife's head to convince him not to resist.

The period was one of the most tense of the Cold War. At the time, NATO was making plans to deploy nuclear Pershing II and Cruise missiles in Western Europe, including in Sicily, to counter the threat of Soviet SS-20 missiles aimed at Europe.

His kidnapping stunned the Pentagon and sent shivers throughout Western European governments.

"Quite frankly, I had no indication that I was a target. All the intelligence I received at the time -- and I thought I had pretty good intelligence -- gave me no indication that I was a target for the Red Brigades," he said.

PRISONER IN A TENT

From Verona, the Brigades drove Dozier to a safe house in Padua in the same northern region.

They kept him in a tent inside one of the rooms and forced him to listen to loud music through headphones, resulting in permanent hearing damage. For 42 days they interrogated him about NATO operations and occasionally sent flyers with his picture behind their trademark five-pointed star to newspapers.

At 11:25 on the morning of Jan 28, 1982, Perna and 12 other men launched the daring operation. Six men secured the perimeter while Perna and six others stormed the apartment where five Brigades members, including two women, were holding Dozier.

"After we knocked down the door I immobilized one of the women and used her as a shield to move forward. One of my men rushed into the tent where Dozier was being held and hit the terrorist guarding Dozier on the head with the butt of his pistol," Perna said. "There was some blood but not a shot was fired."

Inside the tent, Dozier recalled, he was confused and, for a moment, feared the worst.

"I did not know what was happening. I had read accounts of the Aldo Moro kidnapping and about the factions within the Red Brigades and my first thoughts were that I may be caught up in a jurisdictional dispute among factions of the Red Brigades," he said.

"They (the police) pushed their way into my part of the tent and I tried to push them back out because I wasn't sure who they were. But then it dawned on me that these probably were policemen ... and one of them removed his ski mask."

Perna and his team arrested Dozier's captors, led by Antonio Savasta, who later gave evidence. Savasta was also involved in the Moro kidnapping and killing three years earlier.

At a trial in Verona in March, 1982, Dozier stared down Savasta and the other guerrillas who kidnapped him for the last time. Savasta was sentenced to 16 years and six months in prison. He was freed after serving 10 years.

Asked how he felt about his captor walking free now, Dozier said: "If he has been sufficiently punished in the eyes of the Italian government that's fine with me."

That was the last time General James Lee Dozier saw his captors. Now retired, he lives in Florida and works with the U.S. Air Force, teaching a course on hostage avoidance and survival.

Microsoft Unveils Redesigned WindowsMedia.com With Powerful New Features and Content

Posted May 2, 2000 By

REDMOND, Wash., May 2, 2000 — Microsoft Corp. today announced a dramatic upgrade to WindowsMedia.com, the Internet’s most popular audio and video guide*, now offering unmatched search and navigation capabilities, integrated access to artist and album information from Alliance Entertainment Corp.’s All Music Guide, and one of the Web’s largest directories of downloadable music from major and independent labels. WindowsMedia.com’s new features make it easier than ever for mainstream consumers to find and enjoy music, movies and more in the high-quality Windows Media TM Format.

To celebrate this milestone, Microsoft today kicked off the
“Week of WindowsMedia.com,”
running now through May 8. This series of promotions will feature exclusive content from such top-tier artists as Christina Aguilera, Phish and Madonna, live-concert video downloads from House of Blues, movie trailers from the Cannes Film Festival and never-before-released footage from popular movies. Special features will be showcased each day at http://windowsmedia.com/ .

WindowsMedia.com also will host a monthlong portable music device giveaway.** Every day through May 31, WindowsMedia.com will give away three portable music devices. Eight first-prize winners will receive a Hewlett-Packard Jornada Pocket PC, and the grand-prize winner will receive a free trip to and VIP treatment for two at a House of Blues concert in Los Angeles. Registration is free; details are available at http://windowsmedia.com/ .

“The incredible growth in audience and content at WindowsMedia.com presented an opportunity for us to transform the online digital media experience,”
said Dave Fester, general manager of marketing, Digital Media Division, Microsoft.
“The new WindowsMedia.com, enhanced by All Music Guide data, powerful search capabilities and the huge music database, delivers on our goal of making it easy for people to find great content.”

Launched just last year to help consumers discover and sample the best of the Web’s audio and video content, WindowsMedia.com has already become the Internet’s most popular guide to audio and video content on the Internet, with more than 5 million unique visitors per month, according to recent figures from Media Metrix.*

All Music Guide Integration

WindowsMedia.com is the only audio and video guide to incorporate the rich information on more than 400,000 albums from All Music Guide. Searching an artist’s name returns artwork, a biography, a discography with individually rated albums and a listing of similar artists. Following a link from an artist’s main page to a particular album in the discography returns album art, album details, a track listing and the All Music Guide album review. Integrated with the All Music Guide information is a listing of all the songs and videos currently available from that artist via WindowsMedia.com.

Massive Music Download Directory

WindowsMedia.com is creating one of the Internet’s largest directories of downloadable music from major and independent labels, with more than 60,000 tracks available immediately and 40,000 to be added within weeks. The single largest source of downloads available through WindowsMedia.com is Musicmaker.com, which has provided links to tracks drawn from the largest independent labels. The Musicmaker.com library includes more than 20,000 jazz, 35,000 classical and 20,000 rock tracks, plus significant collections in specialty genres.

Thousands of additional tracks will be available from Amplified.com, Atlantic Records, Atomic Pop, Del-Fi, edge102.com, Epitonic, Global Music Network Inc., House of Blues Digital Inc., K-tel, Launch.com, Ministry of Sound, MTV.com, Mudhut, Music Choice, Musicdownloads.com, Raveworld, Remotemusic.com, Rioport, Tower Records and VH1.com.

“The new WindowsMedia.com is the ideal channel for us to get our vast library before millions of Windows Media users,”
said Bill Crowley, senior vice president of marketing and a co-founder of Musicmaker.com.
“The guide’s design makes it easy for music fans to get directly to the artists and genres they like, and the rich background information will encourage them to discover new gems in our library.”

Week of WindowsMedia.com

WindowsMedia.com celebrates its new look and capabilities with a week of exclusive free music downloads, music videos, movie promotions and more. The
“Week of WindowsMedia.com”
kicks off today with a free download of an exclusive remix of
“What a Girl Wants”
by Christina Aguilera, audio and video streams of Aguilera’s

New Features Deliver the Best Experience

Changes at WindowsMedia.com go far beyond its new look. Like the Windows Media Player 7, released to consumers today in beta form, the new WindowsMedia.com was designed to make digital media accessible to mainstream audiences. The site was entirely rebuilt to handle the explosive growth in visitors as well as the massive amount of content available in the Windows Media Format, especially in such popular categories as music downloads and radio. Key features of WindowsMedia.com include the following:

The audio and video people want most. The five major record labels, top independent labels and movie studios are among the more than 1,000 content providers accessible through WindowsMedia.com. That means music fans can hear popular artists, movie fans can watch the latest trailers, and audio-book aficionados can listen to the top titles. WindowsMedia.com is expanding its database to include more than 100,000 songs, 2,000 music videos and 1,900 radio stations as well as scores of news, sports and entertainment sites.

Common activities made easy. Music fans will appreciate the single search interface that points them to music downloads, music videos or artist information from All Music Guide. The Radio Guide accommodates browsing or searches by keyword, format, band, location, language, call sign or frequency, and it remembers visitors’ favorite stations. The Broadband Guide brings high-quality content together in one place to help broadband customers make the most of their connections.

Ifthat's the situation, that's fine.
I won't tell anyone.
But it's my feeling that
ifthis case is handled in the same...
fast-food, slick-ass,
Persian bazaar manner...
with which you seem
to handle everything else...
then something's gonna get missed.
And I wouldn't be doing myjob
ifI allowed Dawson and Downey...
to spend any more time in prison
than absolutely necessary...
because their attorney had predetermined
the path ofleast resistance.
Wow.
I'm sexually aroused, Commander.

I was trying to remember if I had ever before heard of the 1999 film "10 Things I Hate About You." The title is vaguely familiar, meaning I probably recall the advertisements for it when it premiered in the theatres or some other advertisements for it later. I have no idea what it is about, other than more hate crime activity directed at my person and my private property.

I started looked at it a short while ago because I had actually started wondering again when Kerry Park was established in Seattle. After reading about it from 1927 I then read that the racketeering production the 1999 film "10 Things I Hate About You" has an opening scene in Kerry Park, which is in the Queen Anne neighborhood which is a high hill overlooking downtown Seattle. Queen Anne hill also has those three large television towers on it.

Then I noticed that the starring characters in the racketeering production the 1999 film "10 Things I Hate About You"appear to be the actors Heath Ledger as "Patrick Verona" and Julia Stiles.

The funny part is that by the summer of the year 2000 I was living in an apartment building named Verona. I had no conscious idea about that association until the past hour or so. So you know that I have been driving them absolute ape-shit since then by doing things like that.

When I was sitting there in that bar in our office in historic Bellevue, Washington, in 1999, I told her I drove around in my blue Mazda RX-7 and solved crimes. Suzanne Morgan then looked across the table at Thomas Dawkins and asked him "What did he say?" and Thomas repeated what I had said. Later that evening, from my apartment at Oakwood, I wrote an email to Suzanne and commented that all the cigarette smoke in that bar had caused my face to turn red.

General who was held hostage now an example of how to survive

By Nancy Montgomery

Stars and Stripes

Published: August 5, 2005

In U.S. military anti-terrorism training currently under way, the American general kidnapped by Italy’s Red Brigades and held captive for six weeks is used as an example both of what to do and what not to do.

He was an exemplary hostage, who “maintained his composure and survived…,” according to the anti-terrorism training materials.

Yet Brig. Gen. James Dozier had been studied for a month by the leftist group before his kidnapping in December 1981. The terrorists considered kidnapping three other U.S. generals but “chose Dozier because his personal security was less rigorous,” the training materials say.

Dozier, now 76, a retired major general and a resident of Fort Myers, Fla., is OK with that.

“I’ve continued to be involved in the dynamics of international terrorism,” he said in a phone interview Wednesday. “I teach hostage avoidance, and hostage survival, if you screw it up like I did.”

Dozier says he erred, along with others, in taking the threat of terrorism too lightly — especially when, as he says, the Red Brigades announced each fall a season of terrorist activity, with the aim of destabilizing the government.

Generals in Naples and Vicenza, Italy, were better protected, he said, living on base or with a security detail. But Dozier, then a brigadier general working for NATO, lived with his wife, Judy, in a penthouse apartment in Verona and had only an armed driver as security.

“Verona had been a backwater for years. ... We didn’t think we were threatened,” Dozier said.

“We were wrong, but we just didn’t take the threat seriously.”

Dozier’s kidnappers, after previously appearing at his door selling soap and reading the water meter — “indicators,” in retrospect, he said — got into the apartment by posing as plumbers. Dozier let them in, and “things went downhill from there,” Dozier said.

Dozier was trucked to an apartment in Padua. His captors made him wear headphones with music playing 24 hours a day. But they weren’t especially vicious, he said.

“They first started out with hard-rock tapes. It was awful,” he said. “I’d argue with the guards, and they’d turn the volume down. Finally, they changed to Gershwin tapes. At least the music was better.”

He and his captors didn’t talk much, he said, but he worked to make them see him as a human being, not just some military-political symbol — something he recommends when he gives talks such as the one he gave in Stuttgart last year for the U.S. Air Force’s Joint Special Operations University.

“There were two things I did: I was continuously asking about my wife; pretty soon they started bringing me news clippings about what she was doing,” Dozier said. “The other thing I did was to make myself a more reliable prisoner.” That meant he made himself predictable so his captors saw him as less threatening.

Dozier didn’t worry too much about being killed because usually the Red Brigades released its captives.

“It’s just like combat,” he said. “You do the best you can, rather than worrying about what’s going to happen.”

After he was freed in a raid carried out by Italy’s caribinieri police, Dozier said, he met with Gen. Frederick Kroesen, U.S. Army Europe commander who himself survived an assassination attempt in Heidelberg, to discuss security.

“The generals were running around carrying machine guns in their cars,” Dozier said. Kroesen was concerned that might lead to trouble.

“We decided it was better to rely on our security details than be John Wayne ourselves,” Dozier said.

Jimmy Carter’s administration and secretary of state (1993–97) in Pres. Bill Clinton’s cabinet. During his time with the Department of State, Christopher, who was known for his low-key and methodical negotiating style, oversaw the completion (1977) of the Panama Canal Treaty, led the negotiations for the release in 1981 of 52 hostages held in the U.S. embassy in Tehran, supervised the 1995 Dayton Accords that ended the war in Bosnia, and in August 1995 became the first U.S. secretary of state to visit Hanoi. Christopher graduated (1945) from the University of Southern California while serving (1943–46) in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He obtained a law degree (1949) from Stanford University and clerked (1949–50) for Supreme Court Justice William O. He took his first leave of absence to serve as U.S. deputy attorney general (1967–69) under Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson. Christopher later headed the committee that in 1991 recommended substantial reforms to the Los Angeles Police Department following the beating of African American Rodney King. He also led Vice Pres. Encyclopædia Britannica

Robert William Fogel

American economist

Robert William Fogel, (born July 1, 1926, New York, New York, U.S.—died June 11, 2013, Oak Lawn, Illinois), American economist who, with Douglass C. North, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1993. The two were cited for having developed cliometrics, the application of statistical analysis to the study of economic history.

Fogel attended Cornell University (B.A., 1948), Columbia University (M.A., 1960), and Johns Hopkins University (Ph.D., 1963); he later received M.A. degrees from the University of Cambridge (1975) and Harvard University (1976). After teaching at Johns Hopkins and the University of Rochester, he joined the faculty of the University of Chicago (1964). He later accepted a position at Harvard (1975–81), after which he returned to Chicago.

Fogel first attracted attention in the early 1960s with his statistical analysis of the impact of railroads on 19th-century American economic development. Contrary to the thinking of the time, he argued that the building of railroads in the United States had contributed far less than had been believed to the overall growth of the economy. The publication in 1974 of Time on the Cross: The Economics of American Negro Slavery, which he wrote with Stanley L. Engerman, generated considerable controversy because it contended that slavery had been a profitable enterprise that had collapsed for political—rather than economic—reasons. The resulting furor over this theory caused Fogel to write a defense of his work, Without Consent or Contract: The Rise and Fall of American Slavery (1989), which included a moral condemnation of slavery and clarified his earlier research. His later publications include Economic Growth, Population Theory and Physiology: The Bearings of Long-Term Processes on the Making of Economic Policy (1994), The Fourth Great Awakening and the Future of Egalitarianism (2002), The Slavery Debates, 1952–1990: A Retrospective (2003), and The Escape from Hunger and Premature Death, 1700–2100: Europe, America, and the Third World (2004).
