030927-N-2716P-045 Neum, Bosnia and Herzegovina (Sept. 27, 2003) -- President Sulejman Tihic (left), one of the three current Presidents of Bosnia and Herzegovina, greets Mr. Clifford Bond, U.S. Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, upon his arrival aboard the guided missile frigate USS Nicholas (FFG 47). Looking on are Adm. Greg Johnson, Commander U.S. Naval Forces Europe (right), and Cmdr. Chan Swallow, Commanding Officer, USS Nicholas. Visitors received a tour of Nicholas and enjoyed a reception aboard the ship. Nicholas is currently visiting the port of Neum, in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Nicholas is the first U.S. Navy ship ever to make a port visit to this city. Navy frigates carry a crew of 17 officers and 198 enlisted and provide anti-air warfare (AAW) and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) missions, supporting expeditionary forces, replenishment groups, and merchant convoys. The W B Thompson whose name is stamped on the reverse of the frame containing the typed note about this model of the Wright Flyer was a mining tycoon heading a group of Industrialists who bought the Wright Company from Orville on 15 October 1915. After Wilbur's death in 1912 it seems Orville became increasingly disinterested in the business activites of his company and wanted to concentrate on experimentation to continue the development of flying machines. Towards this end, he began to buy the stock held by fellow directors until he was in the commanding position necessary to sell the company to William Boyce Thompson - for a rumoured sum of $1.5million which would have been comfortably more than the brothers had earned from their invention during Wilbur's lifetime.

Samuel Nicholas (1744 – 27 August 1790) was the first officer commissioned in the United States Continental Marines (now the United States Marine Corps) and by tradition is considered to be the first Commandant of the Marine Corps.
Military service
On 5 November 1775, Nicholas was commissioned a "Captain of Marines" by the Second Continental Congress, which was the first commission issued in the Continental Naval Service. His commission was confirmed in writing on 28 November, 18 days after the Continental Congress resolved on 10 November, 1775, "That two battalions of Marines be raised consisting of one Colonel, two Lieutenant-Colonels, two Majors, and other officers, as usual in other regiments; that they consist of an equal number of Privates with other battalions; that particular care be taken that no persons be appointed to offices, or enlisted into said battalions, but such as are good seamen, or so acquainted with maritime affairs as to be able to serve by sea when required; that they be enlisted and commissioned to serve for and during the present war with Great Britain and the Colonies, unless dismissed by order of Congress; that they be distinguished by the names of the First and Second Battalion of Marines."
Captain Nicholas no sooner received official confirmation of his appointment to office than he established recruiting headquarters at Tun Tavern, Philadelphia. By January 1776, having recruited a sufficient number of Marines to man the vessels that comprised the Continental Navy in the waters of Philadelphia, Capt. Nicholas assumed command of the Marine Detachment on board the Alfred. With Commodore Esek Hopkins in command, Alfred set sail from Philadelphia on the morning of 4 January, 1776. The following month witnessed the baptismal fire of the Marines.
