GEORGE V
King George V, second son of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, was born in 1865 and served in the Royal Navy until 1892 when he became heir to the throne following the death of his elder brother, Prince Albert Victor. Prince George was created Duke of York in the same year, married Princess Mary of Teck in 1893, and was created Prince of Wales in 1901.
Edward VII died on 6 May 1910 and King George and Queen Mary were crowned in Westminster Abbey on 22 June 1911.

I RECENTLY attended an excellent lecture hosted by the University of Liverpool Alumni organisation at the Royal Liver Building, to mark the centenary of that iconic structure.
One of the speakers, Mr Peter de Figueiredo, gave a fascinating account of its design, construction and history, and mentioned, in particular, that the clock in the West Tower of the Liver Buildings was started at the precise moment that the crown was placed on the head of King George V on June 22, 1911.
He also said that each of the clock’s 25-foot diameter dials was 18 inches larger than those of Big Ben, and that it was originally known as “Great George”, but that this name had fallen out of use a long time ago.
