I also have these unexplained thoughts that I was a fighter pilot in the U.S. military, although I'm not sure which service, but I may have been in two different branches over time. I am also confused about thoughts that I may have been a helicopter pilot. What's next? A space shuttle pilot?

The bill provides a more limited, or qualified, privilege on material - such as unpublished notes and tapes. Under its provisions, the media could be forced to disclose that information under certain circumstances, including when a judge finds it is necessary in a criminal or civil case and cannot be obtained elsewhere.
In such an instance, if a notebook contained the name of a confidential source, that entry could be blacked out, as could any information that could lead to identifying the source.
McKenna's bill defines the media as anyone who earns a substantial portion of his or her income from publishing or broadcasting. Generally, authors of occasional opinion pieces or Internet bloggers would not be covered.
[So this sounds less like what I thought it was. If some person with the power to attract a reporter wants to start saying things about you, you really are fighting an uphill battle at that point. For example, someone with power that wants to eliminate some perceived competition could get use from their privileged conversations with a reporter.]

Whatever this means, it's probably something that will screw me over if I'm not careful. How the hell can you be careful though about something you know absolutely nothing about? I wonder if this is one of those things where they are raising their expectations about me stepping into something like this? When I was inexperienced at weighing in on such topics, they were probably more tolerate of mistakes I made, because they knew that my objective was to........I'm not sure what my objectives were, except to figure who precisely was spying on me. Now that we are standing around winking at each other as we ask each others' names, I expect there is a point where they raise their expectations about me. Maybe this is one of those issues.

Tait was feeling better. Dr. Jameson had taken over for several hours, allowing him to curl up on a couch in the doctor's lounge for five hours. That was the most sleep he ever seemed to get in one shot, but it was sufficient to make him look indecently chipper to the rest of the floor staff. He made a quick phone call and some milk was sent up. As a Mormon, Tait avoided everything with caffeine--coffee, tea, even cola drinks--and though this type of self-discipline was unusual for a physician, to say nothing of a uniformed officer, he scarcely thought about it except on rare occasions when he pointed out its longevity benefits to his brother practitioners. Tait drank his milk and shaved in the restroom, emerging ready to face another day.
"Any word on the radiation exposure, Jamie?"
The radiology lab had struck out. "They brought a nucleonics officer over from a sub tender, and he scanned the clothes. There was a possible twenty-rad contamination, not enough for frank physiological effects. I think what it might have been was that the nurse took the sample from the back of his hand. The extremities might still have been suffering from the vascular shutdown. That could explain the depleted white count. Maybe."
"How is he otherwise?"
"Better. Not much, but better. I think maybe the keflin's taking hold." The doctor flipped open the chart. "White count is coming back. I put a unit of whole blood into him two hours ago. The blood chemistry is approaching normal limits. Blood pressure is one hundred over sixty-five, heart rate is ninety-four. Temperature ten minutes ago was 100.8--it's been fluctuating for several hours.
"His heart looks pretty good. In fact, I think he's going to make it, unless something unexpected crops up." Jameson reminded himself that in extreme hypothermia cases the unexpected can take a month or more to appear.
Tait examined the chart, remembering what he had been like years ago. A bright young doc, just like Jamie, certain that he could cure the world. It was a good feeling. A pity that experience--in his case, two years at Danang--beat that out of you. Jamie was right, though; there was enough improvement here to make the patient's chances appear measurably better.
"What are the Russians doing?" Tait asked.
"Petchkin has the watch at the moment. When it came his turn, and he changed into scrubs--you know he has that Captain Smirnov holding onto his clothes, like he expected us to steal them or something?"
Tait explained that Petchkin was a KGB agent.
"No kidding? Maybe he has a gun tucked away." Jameson chuckled. "If he does, he'd better watch it. We got three marines up here with us."
"Marines. What for?"
"Forgot to tell you. Some reporter found out we had a Russkie up here and tried to bluff his way onto the floor. A nurse stopped him. Admiral Blackburn found out and went ape. The whole floor's sealed off. What's the big secret, anyway?"
"Beats me, but that's the way it is. What do you think of this Petchkin guy?"
"I don't know. I've never met any Russians before. They don't smile a whole lot. The way they're taking turns watching the patient, you'd think they expect us to make off with him."
"Or maybe that he'll say something they don't want us to hear?" Tait wondered. "Did you get the feeling that they might not want him to make it? I mean, when they didn't want to tell us about what his sub was?"

Attorney general says reporters can face charges for stories

WASHINGTON — Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Sunday he thinks journalists can be prosecuted for publishing classified information, citing an obligation to national security.
The nation's top law enforcer also said the government will not hesitate to track telephone calls made by reporters as part of a criminal leak investigation, but that officials would not do so routinely and randomly.
"There are some statutes on the book which, if you read the language carefully, would seem to indicate that that is a possibility," Gonzales said, referring to prosecutions. "We have an obligation to enforce those laws. We have an obligation to ensure that our national security is protected."
In recent months, journalists have been called into court to testify as part of investigations into leaks, including the unauthorized disclosure of a CIA agent's name as well as the National Security Agency's warrantless-eavesdropping program.
Lucy Dalglish, executive director of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, said she assumed Gonzales was referring to the 1917 Espionage Act, which she said has never been interpreted to prosecute journalists who were providing information to the public.
"I can't imagine a bigger chill on free speech and the public's right to know what its government is up to — both hallmarks of a democracy — than prosecuting reporters," Dalglish said.
Gonzales said he would not comment specifically on whether The New York Times should be prosecuted for disclosing the National Security Agency program last year based on classified information.
He also said authorities would not randomly check journalists' records on domestic-to-domestic phone calls in an effort to find journalists' confidential sources. "We don't engage in domestic-to-domestic surveillance without a court order," Gonzales said.

A piece of nuclear history crumbles in 10 seconds

KALAMA, Cowlitz County — After the explosions whipped around the outside of the Trojan Nuclear Plant cooling tower at 7 a.m. sharp, the top leaned, then slipped into the base. In about ten seconds, the 500-foot tower was reduced to a 15-foot pile of rubble. Brown smoke billowed south, settling over the Columbia River like fog.
Ian Fulton, 14, turned to his friends. "Dude, that sucker just went off!" He did his impression of the explosion.
"That was awesome!" he said. "That was insane!"
Whoops rang out at the Kalama Sportsman's Club, across the river from the plant in Rainier, Ore. The club, a group of private cabins in the shadow of the gigantic concrete tower, is usually a quiet oasis on a Sunday morning, as fishermen drop their lines in the early-morning water.
But this Sunday morning, biscuits and gravy were cooking at The Slab, the tiny community restaurant. Couples carried lawn chairs to the beach. Parents towed tired-looking kids wrapped in blankets.
"It's the big thing for the weekend," said Ron Perron, of Vancouver, Wash. He had a clear view from the balcony of his father-in-law's cabin, where he sat eating a banana and waiting for the tower to crumble.
The $10 million cooling tower, which was part of Oregon's only nuclear-power plant, started producing power amid controversy in 1976 and at one point could have powered all of Portland on its own.
But the power plant worked for only 3,300 days. It was shut down temporarily twice in 1978 when majority owner Portland General Electric (PGE) discovered it was atop an earthquake fault and again in 1980 when cracks in the steam tubes were discovered. It closed permanently in 1992 because of radioactive leaks. Radioactive substances were even detected in the waters where the sportsman's club members fish.
Many who watched from the private club beach had worked at the plant or even helped build it. Walt Jaspers toured the plant when it was new.
"I can remember the guys at Bonneville Power saying, 'Hey, there's no end to the need for power,' " he said.
PGE hoped people would watch the implosion on television. Fish & Wildlife officers hoped viewers would at least stay off public land. But no one could keep people from watching nearly 2,800 pounds of dynamite obliterate the massive tower. It was too good a show.
Lonnie Johnston rode his bicycle about 12 miles to Kalama on the freeway, a tripod sticking out of his backpack. He hoped to videotape the implosion but found he couldn't get close enough to the site.
"I just wanted to see it for real," he said. "I don't regret coming down here."
There was no public viewing area. The Washington and Oregon state patrols stopped traffic on Interstate 5 just before the implosion. The Port of Kalama was closed to the public for the weekend, along with part of the Columbia River and some airspace.
Some of the locals were sad to see the eerie, windowless Trojan tower come down.
"It's too bad they couldn't utilize it, you know," Eunice Harris said. "I didn't think they'd ever tear it down."
It was cheaper to tear it down than to fix it, said PGE spokesman Scott Simms. The company doesn't know what it will do with the land once it clears out the 41,000 tons of concrete and steel. The implosion, which was managed by the same company that took down the Kingdome in Seattle on March 26, 2000, went perfectly, he said.
At one point, the plant represented jobs and progress to the small towns nearby. Then it settled into the landscape.
"It's a landmark," said Ed Noakes of Longview. "You know, you drive down I-5 and you look for it."
Families posed in front of it for pictures in the moments before the implosion. Then they stood, hands poised on their cameras, to watch it disappear.

FBI says it recorded lawmaker taking cash

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — A congressman under investigation for bribery was caught on videotape accepting $100,000 in $100 bills from an FBI informant whose conversations with the lawmaker also were recorded, according to a court document released Sunday. Agents later found the cash hidden in his freezer.
At one audiotaped meeting, Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., chuckles about writing in code to keep secret what the government contends was his corrupt role in getting his children a cut of a communications company's deal for work in Africa.
As Jefferson and the informant passed notes about what percentage the lawmaker's family might receive, the congressman "began laughing and said, 'All these damn notes we're writing to each other as if we're talking, as if the FBI is watching,' " according to the affidavit.
Jefferson, who represents New Orleans and is also the subject of a House ethics-committee probe, has not been charged and denies any wrongdoing.
"As I have previously stated, I have never, over all the years of my public service, accepted payment from anyone for the performance of any act or duty for which I have been elected," he said this month. His press secretary, Melanie Roussell, declined to comment Sunday.
As for the $100,000, the government says Jefferson got the money in a leather briefcase July 30 at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Arlington, Va. The plan was for the lawmaker to use the cash to bribe a high-ranking Nigerian official — the name is blacked out in the court document — to ensure the success of a business deal in that country, the affidavit said.
All but $10,000 was recovered on Aug. 3 when the FBI searched Jefferson's home in Washington. The money was stuffed in his freezer, wrapped in $10,000 packs and concealed in food containers and aluminum foil.
Two of Jefferson's associates have pleaded guilty to bribery-related charges in federal court in Alexandria. One, businessman Vernon Jackson of Louisville, Ky., admitted paying more than $400,000 in bribes to the lawmaker in exchange for his help securing business deals for Jackson's telecommunications company, iGate Inc., in Nigeria and other African countries.
The new details about the case emerged after federal agents searched Jefferson's congressional office on Capitol Hill. About 15 FBI agents entered Jefferson's office in the Rayburn House Office Building about 7:15 p.m. Saturday night and left about 1 p.m. Sunday. Authorities said it was the first time the FBI had raided a sitting congressman's office.
The search was intended to include all areas of Jefferson's office, and could entail computer hardware and software, as well as other electronics and closed or locked containers, according to the affidavit. "There is probable cause to believe" that Jefferson's office "contains property constituting evidence of the commission [of] bribery of a public official," and wire fraud, it said.
Jefferson's lawyer, Robert Trout, said there was no immediate reason for the raid. "The government knew that the documents were being appropriately preserved while proper procedures were being followed," he said.
The FBI declined to comment, as did Ken Melson, the first assistant U.S. attorney in Alexandria.

General Joseph P. Hoar (born December 30, 1934) is a retired U.S. Marine Corps officer, former Commander in Chief of United States Central Command. He retired from the Corps on September 1, 1994.
Hoar moved to MacDill AFB, Florida in 1988 as Chief of Staff for U.S. Central Command. He returned to Headquarters Marine Corps in June 1990, earning a promotion to lieutenant general while serving there as Deputy Chief of Staff for Plans, Policies and Operations. After a year at this assignment he returned to CENTCOM as its commander on August 9, 1991, relieving General H. Norman Schwarzkopf. He remained in that capacity until his retirement three years later.

Though often at odds with one another, the disparate Balkan peoples were able to join forces when driven by the singular goal of striking at a distracted Turkey, by then ensnared in a war with Italy over territory in Libya. The Nixon Doctrine is announced
President Richard Nixon announces that henceforth the United States will expect its Asian allies to tend to their own military defense. The Nixon Doctrine, as the president's statement came to be known, clearly indicated his determination to "Vietnamize" the Vietnam War.
When Richard Nixon took office in early 1969, the United States had been at war in Vietnam for nearly four years. The bloody conflict had already claimed the lives of more than 25,000 American troops and countless Vietnamese. Despite its best efforts, the United States was no closer to victory than before.

I also have these unexplained thoughts that I was a fighter pilot in the U.S. military, although I'm not sure which service, but I may have been in two different branches over time. And, while I am not sure when this divergence happened, I am reasonably certain it was before I turned 33. So I must have been a pretty busy guy. Jacques Lucien Monod (9 February 1910 – 31 May 1976) was a French biologist who was awarded a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1965, sharing it with François Jacob and Andre Lwoff "for their discoveries concerning genetic control of enzyme and virus synthesis".
Monod is widely regarded as one of the founders of molecular biology.
He was also a proponent of the view that life on earth arose by freak chemical accident and was unlikely to be duplicated even in the vast universe. "Man at last knows he is alone in the unfeeling immensity of the universe, out of which he has emerged only by chance. His destiny is nowhere spelled out, nor is his duty. The kingdom above or the darkness below; it is for him to choose", he wrote in 1971.[citation needed] He used the bleak assessment that forms the earlier part of the quote as a springboard to argue for atheism and the absurdity and pointlessness of existence. Monod stated we are merely chemical extras in a majestic but impersonal cosmic drama—an irrelevant, unintended sideshow.

WHITE PLAINS, Jan. 7— Clair Loring Farrand, inventor of the radio loudspeaker and holder of more than 250 patents, died today of a heart attack at his winter home in Palm Springs, Calif. He was 85 years old and lived in Bronxville, N.Y.
Mr. Farrand was founder and president of Farrand Industries Inc. of Valhalla, N.Y., and his companies had control of roughly 1,000 patents. They ranged from bombsights for the B-52 bomber to windows for space program simulators.
The Inductosyn, or Farrand scale, is widely used in manufacturing. It is an electronic measuring device used for machine tool control, computer memory and submarine navigation.
A pioneer in the radio industry, Mr. Farrand was a wireless operator in a Marconi station at Wanamaker's department store in Philadelphia in 1912 when the Titanic hit an iceberg in the North Atlantic. David Sarnoff was the operator at Wanamaker's Manhattan store. Names of Survivors Copied
''I spent all night copying a list of surviving passengers from the steamship Carpathia approaching the coast, for the Philadelphia papers,'' Mr. Farrand once wrote, ''while Sarnoff was doing the same thing for the New York papers.''
Mr. Farrand left the Marconi Corporation in 1918 to perfect his cone loudspeaker. It did away with the general use of earphones and replaced the horn type of speaker, which was hard and unable to produce the vibrations, and thus higher fidelity, of Farrand's paper cone speaker.
Mr. Farrand later worked with Warner Brothers developing sound, color and cine photography. The Farrand Optical Company manufactured range finders, periscopes and later bombsights, simulator windows and optical probes.
