Statement Announcing Airdrops To Provide Humanitarian Aid to Bosnia- Herzegovina

The war that has raged in Bosnia-Herzegovina over the past year has taken a staggering toll: Thousands have been killed or imprisoned, thousands more are at risk due to hunger and exposure, and over 2 million people have been forced from their homes. The humanitarian need is particularly great in eastern Bosnia, where areas have been denied basic food and medicines.
In view of the emergency humanitarian need, I am announcing today that in coordination with the United Nations and UNHCR, the United States will conduct humanitarian airdrops over Bosnia. The airdrops are an extension of the airlift currently underway into Sarajevo. Their purpose is to supplement land convoys. This is a temporary measure designed to address the immediate needs of isolated areas that cannot be reached at this time by ground. Regular overland deliveries are the best means to ensure that the long-term needs of the Bosnian population are met, and the United States calls on the parties to guarantee the safe passage of the humanitarian convoys throughout Bosnia.
The priority for air deliveries will be determined without regard to ethnic or religious affiliation. These airdrops are being carried out strictly for humanitarian purposes; no combat aircraft will be used in this operation. The Department of Defense will be working with the UNHCR to determine the timing and locations for the airdrops.
I am grateful for the considerable international support given to this initiative.

The recent non-final action of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in rejecting Microsoft's application to register Microsoft's Windows trademark does not affect the trademark rights Microsoft has already acquired from its use of the mark. The action does not affect Microsoft's right to use the mark "Windows" or its rights in the Windows operating system products, which are protected by copyrights as well as issued and pending patents.

New Edward Snowden leaks have surfaced showing us how American intelligence agencies are attempting to manipulate and control online behavior even going to the extremes of setting people up using what the GCHQ calls ”Honey Traps“. They then go on to force you into behavior you may not otherwise of been involved in and use the information to discredit American patriots who oppose the current establishment.
Glenn Greenwald who leaked the information has stated:
“Over the last several weeks, I worked with NBC News to publish a series of articles about “dirty trick” tactics used by GCHQ’s previously secret unit, JTRIG (Joint Threat Research Intelligence Group). These were based on four classified GCHQ documents presented to the NSA and the other three partners in the English-speaking “Five Eyes” alliance. Today, we at the Intercept are publishing another new JTRIG document, in full, entitled “The Art of Deception: Training for Online Covert Operations”.

In an apparent response to competitor complaints, the federal Patent and Trademark Office has reversed an earlier decision granting Microsoft a trademark for its popular "Windows" personal-computer operating system.
Microsoft, which applied for the trademark in August 1990, initially received approval last year. But competitors protested, saying they feared Microsoft might require them to obtain a license to make competing products such as spreadsheets and word processors.
Last week the federal agency tentatively denied making Windows a trademark, in effect saying Microsoft cannot protect the word. Microsoft has six months to respond. Company officials said it will protest.
The case shows how sensitive Microsoft competitors - and the federal government - have become to Microsoft's dominance of personal-computer software. The company accounts for 44 percent of software sales in the country. Worldwide, its 1992 sales totaled more than those of its next five competitors combined.
"Microsoft wants control over the term `Windows' to further its control over the industry," said a competitor who requested anonymity. The term is too generic to trademark, the competitor argued.
Ironically, Microsoft was on the opposite side of the protection issue in its defense against Apple's 5-year-old "look and feel" lawsuit against Windows. Microsoft argued that Apple could not claim copyright protection for features on its Macintosh computer
which also are used in Windows.
San Francisco federal Judge Vaughn Walker has yet to rule on the case but last year threw out most of Apple's copyright claims.
In the trademark situation, Microsoft maintains that it should be allowed to protect the term as other companies have done with flagship products, including Xerox as a verb meaning to photocopy.
Microsoft is concerned that the word would be used by competitors for modified Windows products such as "Easy Windows" without its approval, said Marianne Allison of Waggener-Edstrom, Microsoft's public-relations firm.
It also wants to prevent companies from attempting to market a product with similar capabilities under a similar name.
Windows is an operating system, the basic program that makes a personal computer run. Microsoft makes other software, such as word processors and spreadsheets, that uses Windows. So do other competing companies.
Microsoft said it does not intend to force competitors to license the term when they make software, said Collins Hemingway of Microsoft. "We want to encourage people to say that their product runs on our operating system," he said.
He compared the situation to Apple computers, which does not require licensing of the term "Macintosh" for applications that run on its Macintosh computer.
Microsoft did contact sponsors of a trade conference called "Windows World" about possible trademark violations, but the issue was resolved, Allison said.
"You have to show that you yourself are trying to aggressively protect the trademark" to win the federal OK, said Hemingway.

Thousands Stumbled Or Crawled To Safety
NEW YORK - They stumbled out to the street in terror, smoke-streaked and stunned, drawing deep, desperate breaths of cold Manhattan air.
They were survivors, perhaps 50,000 strong. Down they came through the stairwells of the World Trade Center, 26 stories, 58 stories, 107 stories. Hour after hour, they emerged in a surreal procession of sooty faces: urban coal miners in gabardine suits and cashmere sweaters.
From the basement floors came sights of bloodied bodies and burned-out cars. The explosion sent people flying across rooms, then ducking for cover as pieces of the building came raining down.
From the highest floors of the twin towers came stories of terrifying, hour-long descents down dark, smoke-filled stairwells, while others remained trapped in offices, waiting for help or instructions that never came.
"I could see people injured, moaning, bleeding, trapped by the piping that fell from the ceiling," said Jesse Cotton, 42, an armored-car driver who was making a delivery to floor B4 - one level from the explosion.
"I just kept running," Cotton said. "It's weird not to stop, but I kept running."
Fred Ferby, a 35-year-old building mechanic, was working in the basement of the 110-story building when a blast - "It sounded like it was on the other side of the wall" - threw him across the room and buried him in debris.
The next thing Ferby heard were his co-workers' cries for help. He found a flashlight and, peering through the dust and darkness, pulled two of them from the wreckage of the collapsed ceiling and guided them out the door.
The three crawled across the hall floor to an elevator door, where several other people were sitting, helplessly. Ferby kicked the door open, and they rode to the surface.
Ferby said he never had a chance to worry.
"Something kicked in and I just kept going," he said between gulps of oxygen. "I thought I'd pray later."
Marileen Brown, who works on the 55th floor, tried the stars.
"I got down as far as 48, then I passed out," she said.
When she came to, she was in a large office. The smoke had crept in there as well. Someone threw a chair through a window, sending a shower of glass toward the street. A maintenance man was nearby. He said he had a handier tool. He broke a second window with a wrench.

Guy Burgess, (born 1911, Devonport, Devon, Eng.—died Aug. 30, 1963, Moscow, Russia, U.S.S.R.), British diplomat who spied for the Soviet Union in World War II and early in the Cold War period.
At the University of Cambridge in the 1930s, Burgess was part of a group of upper-middle-class students—including Donald Maclean, Kim Philby, and Anthony Blunt—who disagreed with the notion of a capitalist democracy. These men were recruited by Soviet intelligence operatives to become secret agents, and Burgess began supplying information from his posts as a BBC correspondent from 1936 to 1938, a member of the MI6 intelligence agency from 1938 to 1941, and a member of the British Foreign Office from 1944.
In 1951 Burgess was recalled from his post as second secretary of the British embassy in Washington, D.C. He was about to be dismissed from the Foreign Service when he learned in May of that year that a counterintelligence investigation by British and U.S. agencies was closing in on his Cambridge colleague Maclean. To avoid prosecution, both men fled England; their whereabouts remained unknown until 1956, when they held a press conference to announce that they were living as communists in Moscow. In 1963 they were joined by Philby, another Cambridge and Foreign Office colleague, who, it was revealed, had given them the warning in 1951. That same year, Burgess died of a heart attack. It was disclosed in 1979 that the “fourth man” in this spy ring was former Cambridge colleague Blunt, a respected art historian and member of the queen’s household, and that he had contacted Soviet agents to arrange for Burgess and Maclean’s escape from England.

WHITE PLAINS, Jan. 7— Clair Loring Farrand, inventor of the radio loudspeaker and holder of more than 250 patents, died today of a heart attack at his winter home in Palm Springs, Calif. He was 85 years old and lived in Bronxville, N.Y.
Mr. Farrand was founder and president of Farrand Industries Inc. of Valhalla, N.Y., and his companies had control of roughly 1,000 patents. They ranged from bombsights for the B-52 bomber to windows for space program simulators.
The Inductosyn, or Farrand scale, is widely used in manufacturing. It is an electronic measuring device used for machine tool control, computer memory and submarine navigation.
A pioneer in the radio industry, Mr. Farrand was a wireless operator in a Marconi station at Wanamaker's department store in Philadelphia in 1912 when the Titanic hit an iceberg in the North Atlantic. David Sarnoff was the operator at Wanamaker's Manhattan store. Names of Survivors Copied
''I spent all night copying a list of surviving passengers from the steamship Carpathia approaching the coast, for the Philadelphia papers,'' Mr. Farrand once wrote, ''while Sarnoff was doing the same thing for the New York papers.''
Mr. Farrand left the Marconi Corporation in 1918 to perfect his cone loudspeaker. It did away with the general use of earphones and replaced the horn type of speaker, which was hard and unable to produce the vibrations, and thus higher fidelity, of Farrand's paper cone speaker.
Mr. Farrand later worked with Warner Brothers developing sound, color and cine photography. The Farrand Optical Company manufactured range finders, periscopes and later bombsights, simulator windows and optical probes.

Hugo Gernsback, (born Aug. 16, 1884, Luxembourg, Lux.—died Aug. 19, 1967, New York City, N.Y., U.S.), American inventor and publisher who was largely responsible for the establishment of science fiction as an independent literary form.
After receiving a technical education in Luxembourg and Germany, Gernsback traveled to the United States in 1904 to market an improved dry battery that he had invented. He formed a radio supply house, and in 1908 he founded Modern Electrics (later absorbed by Popular Science), a pioneer magazine for radio enthusiasts. In 1911 the magazine published a serialized story by Gernsback that later became the novel Ralph 124C 41+ (1925). Set in the 27th century, its plot was a rather formulaic pulp adventure, but the richly imagined future, filled with fantastic inventions and spaceship travel, established many of the conventions that came to characterize science fiction.
In 1926 Gernsback began publishing Amazing Stories, one of the first magazines devoted exclusively to what he referred to as “scientifiction.” The stories were often crudely written, but the very existence of the magazine and its successors, including Wonder Stories, encouraged the development and refinement of the genre. His contribution was later recognized with the establishment of the annual Hugo Award for the best science fiction novel.

Affiliates of Abramovich, with affiliates of Boris Berezovsky, purchased Sibneft for US$100.3 million (the company was worth US$2.7 billion at that time). Sibneft produces around US$3 billion worth of oil annually. Abramovich established several fly-by-night firms and together with his friend Boris Berezovsky used them to acquire the stock of Sibneft. Mark Clark, in full Mark Wayne Clark (born May 1, 1896, Madison Barracks, N.Y., U.S.—died April 17, 1984, Charleston, S.C.), U.S. Army officer during World War II, who commanded Allied forces (1943–44) during the successful Italian campaign against the Axis powers.
A graduate (1917) of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., Clark served overseas in World War I. Early in 1942 he became chief of staff of army ground forces. Later that year, as deputy commander in chief to General Dwight D. Eisenhower, he executed delicate and demanding assignments in connection with the Allied invasion of North Africa, including a dramatic submarine trip to Algeria for a secret meeting with French officers.
Clark’s responsibilities were considerably enlarged when he was appointed commander of the American 5th Army, which effected a major landing at Salerno (September 1943) aimed at wresting the Italian peninsula from Axis control. Clark received the surrender of the Italian fleet and the government of Marshal Pietro Badoglio the same month; his march into Rome (June 4, 1944) marked the fall of the first enemy capital. In December he was appointed commander of the 15th Army Group and finally received the surrender of the stubborn German forces in the north of Italy on May 2, 1945.
After hostilities ended in Europe, Clark assumed command of U.S. troops in Austria before returning home to command the 6th Army and later the army field forces. In May 1952, during the Korean War, he was given command of all United Nations troops in Korea, holding that post until after an armistice was signed (July 1953); he retired from the army the same year. Clark served as president of The Citadel, a military college in Charleston, S.C., from 1954 to 1966. He wrote Calculated Risk (1950), an account of his experience of World War II, and From the Danube to the Yalu (1954), his perspective on the Korean War.

Plot Summary
Linda Mason, secretary to advertising executive Horace Fairchild III, has theatrical aspirations, and unknown to her boss, she enters a radio talent contest. The contest is the brainchild of Larry Sawyer, press agent for Horace's company, but Horace takes undeserving credit for its success. Horace is in love with Linda as is Larry. The latter is opening a nightclub in partnership with Pedro Gonzales. Linda reaches the finals of the contest and gets the most applause. But Horace announces another contestant has won, as he doesn't want Linda to have a career. Larry gives Linda a two-week contract performing at his Casa Manana night club. Horace hires Maury Sanford, a booking agent, to double-cross Larry and fail to deliver the promised acts. But wait, Larry's hired help and waiters, are the Rio Brothers, Spade Cooley, Yadira Jiminez, Armando & Lita, and other out-of-work performers on Sunset Strip, and they just might save the day.

For all his distrust of the native Bosnians, though, Potiorek took no special security precautions at the time of Franz Ferdinand's visit and rebuffed numerous warnings that they might be necessary.
Condemned from all sides after the assassination for negligence, Potiorek was nevertheless put in charge of the 1914 campaign to invade Serbia. His repeated offensives all failed, and he was relieved of his command in December of 1914. He died in Klagenfurt, Austria, on 17 December 1933.

Marie Skłodowska-Curie (7 November 1867 – 4 July 1934) was a Polish and naturalized-French physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the only woman to win in two fields, and the only person to win in multiple sciences.
Curie died in 1934 at the sanatorium of Sancellemoz (Haute-Savoie), France, due to aplastic anemia brought on by exposure to radiation – mainly, it seems, during her World War I service in mobile X-ray units created by her.

Personal life
Pierre Curie died in a street accident in Paris on 19 April 1906. Crossing the busy Rue Dauphine in the rain at the Quai de Conti, he slipped and fell under a heavy horse-drawn cart. He died instantly when one of the wheels ran over his head, fracturing his skull.

Radium is a chemical element with symbol Ra and atomic number 88. Radium is an almost pure-white alkaline earth metal, but it readily oxidizes on exposure to air, becoming black in color. All isotopes of radium are highly radioactive, with the most stable isotope being radium-226, which has a half-life of 1601 years and decays into radon gas. Because of such instability, radium is luminescent, glowing a faint blue.
In nature, radium is found in uranium ores in trace amounts as small as a seventh of a gram per ton of uraninite. Radium is not necessary for living organisms, and adverse health effects are likely when it is incorporated into biochemical processes because of its radioactivity and chemical reactivity.
