Major Len Creighton: We have a rather large problem in Wyoming, sir.

General Starkey: What large problem is that, Len?

Major Len Creighton: News team got out of Pine Bluff with some potentially damaging videotape, sir.

General Starkey: Flu victims? Body dumps?

Major Len Creighton: A little of both. And our ops I'm told.

General Starkey: Oh, well, we can't have that!

Major Len Creighton: Oh, sir, I know.

General Starkey: Showing footage like that would not be in the national interest.

Major Len Creighton: Absolutely not, sir.

General Starkey: Well, do we know where these news people, these rabble-rousers

That appears to be Jim Shea on the right-hand edge of that photo. I recognize other people in the photograph such as Rich Molck on the left side and then I think that is Drew next to him and Sheperd and Doc Leaverton and Tom Huston and that be Larry Smith next to Jim Shea but I'm not certain. The ship's boat behind them is on shark patrol. I have tried several times to recall specific details about when Shea left the ship. Specifically, I was trying to recall the time-frame of when he called me at that apartment we rented off-base and he asked me to drive onto base and pick him up from the brig. I have been wondering if that was before July 1989 or after. I still don't know. All I know is I remember his mother was visiting him one time and she was staying at our apartment and her boyfriend back in Florida followed her up there to Charleston a few days after she got there and he was arguing with her and I got annoyed with listening to him and I told him to "shag ass." I haven't been able to recall either if that was before or after July 1989. I do recall he was off the ship by the time we left for the Med in 1989 in the weeks after Hurricane Hugo hit Charleston South Carolina. The way I remember it I wouldn't have made it back to base to the ship if Shea hadn't driven me there in the rental car. The way I remember it I was at that bar he was working at as a bartender in downtown Charleston and I went over to another bar with one of his coworkers and I started doing shots of whisky and I can still visualize myself trying to not fall down the stairs as I hurried outside to get back to my rental car in the parking lot before I passed out drunk. I recall that I barely made it back and I climbed onto the hood of the car where I sprawled out as I was about to pass out drunk. I remember a few pedestrians trying to steal my shoes but I kicked one of them and then went off to the bar that Shea worked in. I do not now recall how I knew those were the same guys and maybe I don't know. The only part I recall is that Shea told me he wasn't going to ride back to his apartment in my rental car but he overhead some customers in the bar talking about some guy passed out on the hood of a car in the parking lot so he decided he should check on whether that was me and sure enough there I was. He drove me back to the base and we left port a few hours later and he even took my rental car back to the rental company. I still don't know the dates we were in the Caribbean Sea for that short deployment and when this photo was made of swim-call in the ocean. I used to have a few of my own photos from that time but I have lost every single photograph I used to own. I don't know who took those photos but I was there in ocean too that day in 1989 and the glare from the window in that one photo from 1987 reminds me of that tour bus many of us rode from Portsmouth in 1987. That photo referenced here of the Caribbean is from 1989 and the others referenced here are from the North Atlantic deployment and liberty ports in 1987.

Sure does explain a lot.

I have been trying to remember also how long Jim Shea and I worked together at First Federal before he quit and found a better job somewhere near Myrtle Beach. What the name of that city? Wilmington. That sounds right. I just looked it up on the map. The label for Cape Fear River jumped out at me first.

All I have been able to decide is that he left after about the first year. That would mean from about March 1990 to March 1991 but that is just a rough guess. I have no idea of even the month of year or even the season of year when he quit.

I remember Jim drove me over to the car dealership in Greenville when I bought that used Honda Civic, a 1989 model perhaps. I can still recall he was sitting there in the office with me and the salesman had left and Jim and I talked about the price and I thought later the salesman must have been listening to us though the speakerphone or something. That must have been before we started work on that First Federal contract because I had to have a car for that job. So we must have been in Greenville for some time before the contract started. We would have had to have been employed by that point by Ketterman's because I got a loan for the car.

I talked to him last on the telephone from my desk when I worked at Microsoft. That was back in the year 2000. He said something to me over the telephone that day I thought about a long time afterwards and still do. He told me also that he was working as a technical recruiter and could get me a job somewhere else. I told him I liked it there at Microsoft and wanted to stay.

The reason that all seems important is because I just cannot recall any details about the guy who would have replaced him. I do not recall any details about me covering the entire region by myself. There were two other Ketterman's employees in the Greenville office and they were old-school Unisys guys but they didn't work on the ATMs or the bank teller computers.

Merl. I just remembered. He was one of the two guys, along with Tom Matter, who had the high-profile job of maintaining the check sorting machines at First Federal. They also worked on the A-series mainframes and the B-series mini-computers, as best I recall. I just remembered that Merl, who started work there at the same time in March 1990 as Tom Matter, Jim Shea, and I did, there in Greenville South Carolina. Well, anyway, Merl was supposed to be an expert on the Burroughs RT-750 automatic teller machine. I just don't recall him ever covering for me on repairs or even telling me anything useful about them. In recent hours I have also been thinking about the time I met one of the Unisys employees who used to repair the ATMs and the bank employees held him in high regard. I recall he was in our office one day to drop off his resume seeking employment. He was wasn't hired though as the way I remember it no one was even being interviewed. I don't think that was associated with Jim Shea leaving. I just remember we were struggling to maintain those machines. I remember complaining about lack of documentation. The best change was when Universal Financial Products took over and they were able to get quality spare parts for that check deposit contraption in the RT-750. Replacing those foam rollers was a real pain but finally having quality replacement parts was a beautiful thing since we knew we wouldn't have to do it all over again the next day.

So anyway, I still cannot recall one single thing about the guy who replaced Jim Shea. Sure, I recall Frank helping me load my moving truck there in 1992 when I tranfered to Memphis but was he the one who replaced Shea? I just cannot recall. If I worked with him for about a year then seems I would remember something.

The Alibi Squad.

Ah, but now I remember more as I try to remember details about the time of year. I decided I am think about the end of summer in the year 1990. That must be what I am thinking of because of my jacket.

That got me thinking about changes that leads to that memory. That caused me to remember certain details about when we started to work as contractors for First Federal Savings and Loan of South Carolina.

When we worked on that ATMs the bank always had security guards meet us there. They had the keys to safe with the money in it and they guarded the money while I worked on the ATM. Jim Shea was laughing for a while about how one of the women who worked as a security guard wanted to go out on a date with me. I didn't want to. Sometime after we had worked with them for a while the bank fired the security guard company and regular bank employees, the bank tellers, took over that role. They guarded the money and they had all the keys to let us into the bank and into the machines. That was how I met Bobbilynn out in Clemson. But before that, and during that time-frame, was Melody Barber there was Cecilia Gage. I knew Rachel because she was a bank teller in the main branch and my employer's office was there in that main branch office. I remember Jim Shea telling me she liked me. Another time he was complaining that he wasn't my social secretary or whatever was his precise words, from taking messages for me from women who called me at the office. I think that time was the woman who worked for the architect there in Greenville. A woman who worked at one of the many bank branches I traveled to there in Upstate South Carolina introduced me to her. So anyway, the bank had a schedule for the bank tellers who volunteered and they would be on call just as I was. I was on call for one full week and then I was not on call the next week. With only Jim Shea and me to cover that region of South Carolina we were on-call from the morning hours until midnight and he and I had to take every service call that came in. We also had to work full days. The bank had employees on-call too and they would meet one of us there at the site that was having problems and they would stay there until Jim or I fixed the machine. One night, perhaps a weekend day, I was out at a stand-alone ATM with Melody Barber and Cecilia Gage and I remember that we were in that ATM room and Cecilia was feeling cold and I was wearing a jacket, the kind they call a bomber's jacket, and I took it off and gave it to her. Later I was over at the Phoenix nightclub near the airport, where I often went with Barbara and pals, and I discovered that Cecilia had put a note in one of the jacket pockets and she had written her telephone number on it. So anyway, that got me thinking about the time of year and that must have been the year 1990. That reminded me about those security guards and I have not thought about those details in what seems like over ten years at least if even that. So I wonder what else I have forgot.

Man, listen up.
Tell me where you are.

All right, buddy?
Don't worry about me, man.

NATO Exercise Begins In Atlantic

AP, Associated Press

Aug. 31, 1987 4:57 PM ET

NORFOLK, VA. NORFOLK, Va. (AP) _ NATO launched a major exercise Monday in the North Atlantic Ocean with fewer than half the number of U.S. warships that participated in a similar exercise two years ago.

A Navy spokesman said the cutback was not due to the buildup of American Navy forces in the Persian Gulf.

More than 150 ships and 250 aircraft from 11 nations are joining in ''Ocean Safari '87,'' which continues through Sept. 18, the office of Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic said in a statement.

Of those ships, 11 belong to the American Navy, including the aircraft carrier Forrestal and its eight escorts. When the exercise was last held in 1985 with a total of 160 ships, 28 U.S. vessels participated, including three aircraft carriers.

''These exercises are designed a year and a half to two years in advance. It was just designed for a smaller number of U.S. ships this time,'' said Petty Officer 1st Class Jim DeAngio, a SACLANT spokesman. ''More ships from the other nations are involved this time.''

DeAngio said the U.S. cutback had nothing to do with the buildup of naval forces in the Middle East.

The NATO nations hold the exercise to practice defending sea lanes in the Atlantic and general readiness for war.

Sending ships and aircraft to the exercise are Belgium, Canada, West Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Great Britain, France, Spain and the United States.

This is Spain's first involvement in a major exercise since joining the alliance in 1982. Spain and France are not part of NATO's armed forces, but do join training exercises with other alliance members.

The maneuvers will be conducted in the North Atlantic and in the Norwegian Sea.

Goiânia accident

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Goiânia accident was a radioactive contamination accident that occurred on September 13, 1987, at Goiânia, in the Brazilian state of Goiás, after an old radiotherapy source was stolen from an abandoned hospital site in the city. It was subsequently handled by many people, resulting in four deaths. About 112,000 people were examined for radioactive contamination and 249 were found to have significant levels of radioactive material in or on their body. In the cleanup operation, topsoil had to be removed from several sites, and several houses were demolished. All the objects from within those houses were removed and examined. Time magazine has identified the accident as one of the world's "worst nuclear disasters" and the International Atomic Energy Agency called it "one of the world's worst radiological incidents".

Events

Hospital abandonment

The Instituto Goiano de Radioterapia (IGR), a private radiotherapy institute in Goiânia, was just 1 km (0.62 mi) northwest of Praça Cívica, the administrative center of the city. It moved to its new premises in 1985, leaving behind a caesium-137-based teletherapy unit that had been purchased in 1977. The fate of the abandoned site was disputed in court between IGR and the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, then owner of the premises. On September 11, 1986, the Court of Goiás stated it had knowledge of the abandoned radiological material in the building.

Four months before the theft, on May 4, 1987, Saura Taniguti, then director of Ipasgo, the institute of insurance for civil servants, used police force to prevent one of the owners of IGR, Carlos Figueiredo Bezerril, from removing the objects that were left behind. Figueiredo then warned the president of Ipasgo, Lício Teixeira Borges, that he should take responsibility "for what would happen with the caesium bomb".

The court posted a security guard to protect the hazardous abandoned equipment. Meanwhile, the owners of IGR wrote several letters to the National Nuclear Energy Commission, warning them about the danger of keeping a teletherapy unit at an abandoned site, but they could not remove the equipment by themselves once a court order prevented them from doing so.

Theft of the source

On September 13, 1987, the guard in charge of daytime security, Voudireinão da Silva, did not show up to work, using a sick day to attend a cinema screening of Herbie Goes Bananas with his family. That same day, "scavengers" Roberto dos Santos Alves and Wagner Mota Pereira illegally entered the partially demolished facility, found the teletherapy unit – which they thought might have some scrap value – and placed it in a wheelbarrow, taking it to Alves's home, about 0.6 kilometres (0.4 mi) north of the clinic. There, they began dismantling the equipment. That same evening, they both began to vomit. Nevertheless, they continued in their efforts. The following day, Pereira began to experience diarrhea and dizziness and his left hand began to swell. He soon developed a burn on this hand in the same size and shape as the aperture - he eventually had partial amputation of several fingers. On September 15, Pereira visited a local clinic where his symptoms were diagnosed as the result of something he had eaten, and he was told to return home and rest. Alves, however, continued with his efforts to dismantle the equipment, which was now sitting under a mango tree in his back yard. In the course of this effort, he eventually freed the caesium capsule from its protective rotating head. However, his prolonged exposure to the radioactive material led to his right forearm becoming ulcerated, requiring amputation.

The source is partially broken

On September 16, Alves succeeded in puncturing the capsule's aperture window with a screwdriver, allowing him to see a deep blue light coming from the tiny opening he had created. He inserted the screwdriver and successfully scooped out some of the glowing substance. Thinking it was perhaps a type of gunpowder, he tried to light it, but the powder would not ignite. The exact mechanism by which the light was generated was not known at the time the IAEA report was written, though it was thought to be either fluorescence or Cherenkov radiation associated with the absorption of moisture by the source; similar blue light was observed in 1988 at Oak Ridge National Laboratory during the disencapsulation of a 137Cs source.

The source is sold and dismantled

On September 18, Alves sold the items to a nearby scrapyard. A scrapyard employee came to the house, loaded the contents into a wheelbarrow, transported them to the yard, and unloaded them. That night, the owner of the scrapyard, Devair Alves Ferreira, who lived next door, went into the garage and noticed the blue glow from the punctured capsule. Thinking the capsule's contents were either valuable or even supernatural, he immediately brought it into his house. Over the next three days, he invited friends and family to view the strange glowing substance and offered a reward to anyone who could free it from the capsule. He mentioned that he intended to make a ring out of it for his wife. On September 21 at the scrapyard, a friend of Ferreira's (given as EF1 in the IAEA report) succeeded in freeing several rice-sized grains of the glowing material from the capsule using a screwdriver. He shared some of these with his brother, claimed some for himself, and the rest remained in the hands of Devair Alves Ferreira, who readily began to share it with various friends and family members. That same day, his wife, 37-year-old Gabriela Maria Ferreira, began to fall ill. On September 25, 1987, Devair Alves Ferreira sold the scrap metal to a second scrapyard.

Abstract

On 13 September 1987, a radiation accident occurred in the city of Goiânia in Central Brazil. Approximately 250 people were exposed to a 137Cs source from an abandoned radiotherapy unit. At least 14 patients showed some degree of bone marrow depression, and eight developed the classical signs and symptoms of acute radiation syndrome (ARS). Twenty-eight people presented local radiation injuries ranging from first to third degree, and 104 individuals showed evidence of internal contamination. This paper describes the circumstances of the event, the first-aid measures taken, the criteria adopted for triage of the exposed population, and the radiation protection procedures used during the clinical management of the irradiated individuals.

Goiâna Radiation Accident in Brazil

Goiânia was founded in 1933 as the planned state capital of the Brazilian state of Goiás. It was constructed in the coastal Brazilian frontier, only 110 miles southwest of the country’s capital, Brasília, and is now a modern city with well over a million inhabitants. However, as in the rest of the rapidly developing country, there is a vast educational and financial gap between the richest and the poorest citizens, and the Goiânia radiation accident is seen as symptomatic of this clash between modern technologies and marginal ways of living.

On 13 September 1987, some local scavengers discovered an unusual object–although they did not know it, a caesium-137 radioactive source–in an abandoned private radiotherapy clinic, the Instituto Goiano de Radioterapia. It had been left unprotected as the daytime security guard had abandoned his post and taken his family to the cinema (where they reportedly watched Herbie Goes Bananas).

Getúlio Vargas

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Getúlio Dornelles Vargas (19 April 1882 – 24 August 1954) served as President of Brazil, first as dictator, from 1930 to 1945, and in a democratically elected term from 1951 until his suicide in 1954.

Death

Vargas' political adversaries initiated a crisis which culminated in the "Rua Tonelero" incident, where Major Rubens Vaz was killed during an attempt on the life of Vargas' main adversary, Carlos Lacerda.[citation needed] Lieutenant Gregório Fortunato, chief of Vargas' personal guard, was accused of masterminding the assassination attempt. This aroused a reaction in the military against Vargas and the generals demanded his resignation. In a last-ditch effort Vargas called a special cabinet meeting on the eve of August 24, but rumors spread that the armed forces officers were implacable.[citation needed]

Feeling the situation beyond his control, Vargas shot himself in the chest on August 24, 1954 in the Catete Palace with a Colt Police Positive Special.

The famous last lines read, "Serenely, I take my first step on the road to eternity and I leave life to enter history."

On exhibit in the Palace is his nightshirt with a bullet hole in the breast. The popular commotion that his suicide caused was so huge, that it destroyed the ambitions of his enemies for many years, among them rightists, anti-nationalists, and pro-United States elements.

Getúlio Vargas

Getúlio Vargas, in full Getúlio Dorneles Vargas (born April 19, 1882 [see Researchers Note], , São Borja, Braz.—died Aug. 24, 1954, Rio de Janeiro), president of Brazil (1930–45, 1951–54), who brought social and economic changes that helped modernize the country. Although denounced by some as an unprincipled dictator, Vargas was revered by his followers as the “Father of the Poor,” for his battle against big business and large landowners.

As an elected president restrained by congress, a profusion of political parties, and public opinion, Vargas was unable to satisfy his labour following or to placate mounting middle-class opposition. Thus, he resorted increasingly to ultranationalistic appeals to hold popular support and incurred the animosity of the U.S. government, which encouraged intransigent opposition from his enemies. By mid-1954 criticism of the government was widespread, and the armed forces, professing shock over scandals within the regime, joined in the call for Vargas’s withdrawal. Rather than accept forced retirement, Vargas took his life on Aug. 24, 1954. His dramatic deathbed testament to the country led to a great resurgence of mass support, allowing for a rapid return of his followers to power.

Harry Tuttle: Why? I came into this game for the action, the excitement. Go anywhere, travel light, get in, get out, wherever there's trouble, a man alone. Now they got the whole country sectioned off, you can't make a move without a form.

Quotes

Captain DeVriess: Tell me, Keith. Now that you've had a chance to study "The Caine" more closely, do you like her any better?

Ens. Willis 'Willie' Seward Keith: The tour was very interesting, sir.

Captain DeVriess: The ship too messy for you?

Ens. Willis 'Willie' Seward Keith: [Keefer walks in] Well, that's a difficult question, sir.

Lt. Tom Keefer: It's a ridiculous question. The question is, is this mess a ship?

The Caine Mutiny (1954)

Quotes

Lt. Commander Philip Francis Queeg: This is the captain speaking. Some misguided sailors on this ship still think they can pull a fast one on me. Well, they're very much mistaken. Since you've taken this course, the innocent will be punished with the guilty. There will be no liberty for any member of this crew for three months. I will not be made a fool of! Do you hear me?

Chapter 17

“Patch them through.”

There was a muffled roar of static with a voice talking unintelligibly behind it.

“Wait a minute,” Len said.

The static slowly cleared.

“—Lion, Team Lion, do you read, Blue Base? Can you read? One… two… three… four… this is Team Lion—”

“I’ve got you, Team Lion,” Starkey said. “This is Blue Base One.”

“Problem is coded Flowerpot in the Contingency Book,” the tinny voice said. “Repeat, Flowerpot.”

“I know what the fuck Flowerpot is,” Starkey said.
