President nominates 35th commandant of the Marine Corps

ARLINGTON, Va. — President Barack Obama announced his nomination July 20 for Gen. James F. Amos to be appointed 35th commandant of the Marine Corps.

The announcement came after Amos, currently the Corps’ second in command, was recommended for the position by Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus and Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

If confirmed by Congress, Amos will be the first career aviator to lead the Corps and would become the first assistant commandant in several decades to succeed his immediate boss.

Amos brings a sense of renewed enthusiasm to the amphibious mission of the Marine Corps.

In a statement to the Naval War College in June 2010, Amos said he is “more convinced than ever before that a balanced Navy-Marine Corps team, one that is capable of promptly, effectively and efficiently conducting operations throughout the entire range of military operations, is critical to the continued prosperity of our nation and is essential to the survival of our friends, allies and partners.”

Amos has held command at numerous levels most notably with the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing in support of Operation Iraq Freedom I and II from 2002-2004. He has also served as the commanding general of Marine Corps Combat Development Command and as the deputy commandant of Combat Development and Integration from 2006 – 2008. Amos was appointed to his present rank and assigned as assistant commandant of the Marine Corps in 2008.

Amos will be ushered in as commandant at a pivotal time as the Marine Corps tries to refocus its efforts as an amphibious force in readiness after eight years of fighting in a landlocked region.

Gen. James T. Conway is scheduled to retire in September.

The Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda (German: Reichsministerium für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda or Propagandaministerium) was Nazi Germany's ministry that enforced Nazi Party ideology in Germany and regulated its culture and society. Founded on March 13, 1933, by Adolf Hitler's new National Socialist government, the Ministry was headed by Dr. Joseph Goebbels and was responsible for controlling the press and culture of Nazi Germany.

The Ministry was based in the Ordenspalais in Berlin-Mitte on the Wilhelmplatz across from the Reich Chancellery.


Role in the Nazi state

When the Nazis took power the Propaganda Ministry was established almost immediately. It was charged with enforcing Nazi doctrine on the people and controlling public opinion. However, the Ministry became even more important after the outbreak of war.

World War II was conducted with a much greater level of propaganda than World War I, especially in the new media of film and radio. Because of practical experience and scientific occupation with propaganda in Europe and USA, propaganda was organised in a planned fashion. A new psychological warfare was born.

Organization

The Ministry grew steadily. It began in 1933 with five departments and 350 employees. By 1939, there were 2000 employees in 17 departments. Between 1933 and 1941, the Ministry's budget grew from 14 million to 187 million Reichsmarks. Three state secretaries were subordinate to Joseph Goebbels


Propaganda

The Propaganda Ministry used many media to further the National Socialist message and maintain control over the people. Posters, newspapers, publishing, and the arts were all used and explicitly controlled by the Ministry.

Speeches were also used to great effect by the German Government. Goebbels commented on Hitler's first speech as Chancellor: "It will have great propaganda value...be used and viewed in cinemas for years to come...what an achievement."

Just before Hitler delivered this speech Goebbels introduced him and used the opportunity to highlight the importance of propaganda. "It seems you cannot have a good government without good propaganda, but then, you can't have good propaganda without a good government. However, you cannot lie! We must never lie!

There were wide smiles, thoughtful gifts and polite - if corny - jokes.

But away from the cameras, some dark clouds hung over new British leader David Cameron's first trip to the White House for talks with President Barack Obama.

Mounting American anger at BP, a row over the release of the Lockerbie bomber, and sharp differences on the right medicine for economic ills have chipped away at the so-called special relationship.

The two leaders appear to have forged a warmer personal relationship than the one between Obama and Cameron's predecessor Gordon Brown. But they face a fundamental philosophical divide: Cameron embraces harsh austerity, Obama prefers aggressive stimulus.

Since his Conservative-led coalition ousted Brown's Labour Party in May, Cameron has made a dramatic reverse in British economic policy, ushering in steep cuts to public spending in order to clear the country's record national debt.

Obama, like his fellow center-left politician Brown, is wary of stalling fragile signs of growth - and had hoped international allies would back his plan of continuing pump priming measures as the best remedy to the financial crisis.

Amid bubbling anger at BP's handling of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, Cameron also arrived in Washington mounting a defense of the oil giant - insisting the company is handling the disaster as best it can.

Cameron has been quick to stress that almost half of BP's shareholders, and hundreds of the firm's staff, are from the U.S. - rejecting claims that blame for the spill should fall on Britain alone.

"It's in the interest of both our countries, as we agreed, that it remains a strong and stable company for the future," Cameron said Tuesday in a joint news conference with Obama.

Back in the year 2003 I wrote a letter on my computer at home and I printed it out on to paper and I put that letter in a stamped envelope for the postal service and I sent that letter through the United States Postal Service. I had the envelope of the letter addressed specifically to the Chief of Operations United States Navy and I referenced a special projects branch I had found on the internet.

I wrote about a computer program I created for the guided missile computer complex system that would transfer memory from one of the computers to the other when we were in the Persian Gulf in 1988. We had two identical systems in place. They were twins you could say. The transfer of code was problematic and the solution was not obvious.

I mailed the letter to the Chief of Operations United States Navy and told them I should have received the Silver Star.

I meant what we said when we embraced that resolution that said, "Disclose, disarm, or face serious consequences." Words mean something in this world, if you're trying to protect the American people.

My doctor at the VA is not incompetent. He just is not law enforcement and doesn’t have the resources necessary to solve the actual problem that is agitating me. If the police would do their jobs and prosecute the people trying to terrorize me, such as Microsoft and Dave Reichert, then I wouldn’t even need a doctor from the VA, which I don’t even need at all
