I might have sent Lesa Jewell photos from the two sprint triathlons I finished in 2003. I don't know. Seafair maybe.
I remember the photos from one where I wondered to myself if a woman had timed it so she would be in the photo with me. The photographer was in clear view.
Those sprint-distance triathlon, which I think as the most common, are the easiest distance for me to cover. Or at least they were. I doubt I could finish the swim course today. Back then though that distance was more of a training day for me. I have often thought I could finish that distance every day seven days a week. I probably could have finished the olympic-distance triathlons every day. Maybe. Those were only twice this distance of the sprint triathlon. Certainly three times per week I could have easily covered that distance.
So anyway, I sent an email to Steve Ballmer one day when I was working at Microsoft. I had read something somewhere about him being a basketball player. I might have read that somewhere in information they sent out to Microsoft employees or I read it in the local news. So one day I sent him an email and I opened with a paragraph that included precisely or very similar to the phrase "I understand you're an athlete too."
What I was writing about was how the Ironman corporation had a competition that was for president's of corporations and I wrote to Ballmer telling him about how I was trying to finish and Ironman triathlon and I wondered if he would compete for Microsoft in that Ironman event for corporate presidents.
That was when I wrote about how I had to drop out of Ironman Coeur d'Alene because the heat had been extreme that day and I specifically used the phrase that I couldn't "handle the heat."
I did finish the course the next year and that day I finished was 27 June 2004.
Sometime around that time back in 2003 I had read also about the director of human resources being a competitor in Ironman triathlons and I wrote to him about how I could wait to get back out to Coeur d'Alene and rub my toes in the sand of the lake's beach.
Ballmer responded with a short message that was precisely the words or very similar to: "Not for me, but thanks."

Ironman officials cut Provo's contest in half
The full triathlon will be held in northern Idaho

PROVO — Ironman North America will return here in 2003 — halfway, that is.
Organizers announced Saturday the event will be shortened to a Half-Ironman, meaning distances of the running, biking and swimming portions will be cut in half.
The competition is scheduled for May 31, 2003.
Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, has been chosen to host a full Ironman on June 29, 2003, to replace Provo's full event, said Shane Facteau, Ironman North America spokesman.
"Obviously we need a full Ironman event in the West, but we didn't want to give up Provo, so this gives us the best of both worlds," he said.
During Provo's first Ironman event in June, John Boland, 53, Redondo Beach, Calif., drowned as winds gusted to 50 mph and swimmers battled 3-foot waves in Utah Lake.
Organizers canceled the 2.4-mile swim 20 minutes after it began, but by that time most of the 1,550 athletes already were in the water.
Organizers had to re-evaluate whether to continue to hold the event using the same venue, Facteau said.
Organizers were "mollified by the change to the Half-Ironman distance, which allows the swim to take place in the protected boat channel of Utah Lake, rather than in the exposed portion of the lake," Facteau said.
"We made a commitment to Utah County when we first came here," said Ironman North America President Graham Fraser. "Through discussions with county commissioners, we decided a Half-Ironman is the way to go for the immediate future."
Facteau said attendance at Half-Ironman events draws about 1,500 to 1,800 athletes, similar to that of the full event. The Half-Ironman triathlon includes a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride and a 13.1-mile run.
The county has a year-to-year renewable contract until 2006 to host the triathlon competition, but Ironman officials had previously hinted they might violate the contract.
"In this business, nothing is definite, but our plans are to be (in Provo) long term," Facteau said Saturday. "We always liked Provo; we hope to be there a long, long time."
Ironman brought approximately $3 million to Utah County this year, officials estimated.
"We've worked long and hard with them to alleviate some concerns," County Commissioner Gary Herbert said. "The belief now is that we are in with them for the long haul."

Veylupek returns to Coeur d'Alene rejuvenated
L-o-n-g hike did wonders for triathlete
Greg Lee and Jim Meehan
Staff writers
Today will be the first Ironman triathlon for professional Chuck Veylupek since the 2001 season.
Veylupek took 2002 off to find himself, so to speak. He spent 163 days hiking the Pacific Coast Trail -- some 2,658 miles from Mexico to Canada.
"I was going through the motions," Veylupek (pronounced Vay-lou-peck) said of his career. "I realized how much I wanted to be back in the sport."
Veylupek, whose father lives in Post Falls, is no stranger to the area. In the third year of his pro career in 1993, Veylupek took second in the pro division of the Coeur d'Alene Triathlon.
Since then, it would appear the 34-year-old Veylupek -- who is known in triathlon circles simply as Chuckie V because his last name is difficult to pronounce -- has matured. He sported a funky mohawk during his early pro years. Today, he features a full crop of locks. "It paid some bills," the colorful Veylupek said of his early premeditated image. "I don't know if I've matured any."
Most pro triathletes' best years are behind them by the time they reach their mid 30s. How much longer Veylupek can make a living swimming, biking and running only he and his body knows.
Veylupek, who makes his home in Buellton, Calif., will take about a month to recover after Ironman Coeur d'Alene before tuning up for Ironman Canada in Penticton, site of his lone Ironman victory in 1999.
If Veylupek contends today, it will be because of his strength on the bike. He was a member of the U.S. Cycling Team from 1988-1991 and was a U.S. Olympic alternate for cycling.
Queen of Ironman
Paula Newby-Fraser is the Michael Jordan of women's triathlon. The South African native has won eight Ironman world titles in Hawaii. She's won 23 Ironman events in her career -- not counting a half-Ironman she captured last month. She won the 1987 Coeur d'Alene Triathlon.
Newby-Fraser is serving as pro liaison for today's event.
"I still race, but I am doing other things during the year and I work around that," she said. "I coach (triathletes) a little bit, help put on the events. I'm still involved in the sport."
Melissa Spooner, one of today's favorites, said Newby-Fraser "is our sport really, at least for women. She's really a phenomenal athlete. It was always a thrill to be on the starting line with someone like Paula."
Newby-Fraser, who went on a 10-mile bike ride Friday, has seen Ironman evolve in the last two decades.
"It was sort of on the upswing when I got into it," she said. "Ironman was sort of freakish and fringe, but now it's become so mainstream and competitive. I'm proud to have contributed to it."
Not racing for second
If there's a favorite among the pro men it's believed to be Spencer Smith.
Smith, 30, who hails from Great Britain but lives stateside in Carlsbad, Calif., has enjoyed much success in both long and short course triathlons. He's posted a pair of top 10 finishes at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, including a fifth-place finish in 1998. He's posted Ironman victories at Ironman Florida (2001) and Ironman Brazil (2002).
One thing Smith doesn't lack is confidence.
"I'm generally pretty good in all three disciplines," Smith said of the swim-bike-run event. "I'd rather be strong in biking than running. You don't win the race in swimming, but you can lose it. I expect to be near or at the front at all times."
Smith went so far as to say if he's in the lead after the bike he feels confident about his chance to win.
"If anybody is with me off the bike, then I probably haven't rode as well as I'd like," Smith said.
Smith arrived in CdA a week ago Friday. He said the course, which is considered relatively flat, is deceptive.
"There's some knotty bits," Smith said. "It's not completely flat. The roads are heavy, not smooth. You have weather here (during the winter). I don't think it's a fast course. It's not easy and it's not difficult. It's a strong man's course."
Fond memories
Rodkey Faust of Rathdrum would like to do Ironman Coeur d'Alene. But not Sunday.
He did his first Ironman 21 years ago in Hawaii at the age of 14. His name will forever be listed in the Ironman record books for being the youngest overall finisher.
"I was watching it (Ironman) on TV when I was about 12 and I remember telling my mom then that I wanted to try it," said Faust, who moved shortly thereafter with his mother to Hawaii.
It was February 1982, when Faust did Ironman in Kona. He finished in a little more than 171/2 hours -- well within the 24-hour limit the event allowed participants to finish at the time.
The most difficult part of the event for Faust was the 26.2-mile run.
"I ended up walking the whole thing," said Faust, who works for a Spokane sheet metal business.
Shortly after the event, Ironman officials instituted an age limit (18 years and older). That explains why his finish still stands.
Faust didn't waste any time before trying his second Ironman. In fact, because he had finished the event previously, Faust was allowed to enter the race when it was scheduled eight months later in October -- the date it has occupied annually on the calendar since.
He finished in 131/2 hours the second time.
Faust did his third Ironman the following year. He's done several shorter triathlons since but hasn't attempted another Ironman.
He and his wife, Julie, will be among the anticipated crowd of 30,000 today. They plan to follow some of the participants around on their tandem bike.
"I expect it to be a good spectator event," he said. "I think Coeur d'Alene is an ideal place for an Ironman."
No comedians? We beg to differ
Ironman CdA entrants were asked to list their occupation when they registered.
None listed comedian. Judging by a couple of dozen entries, though, it would appear there are several would-be comedians in the field.
