To this distinguished company I wish to express my most sincere appreciation not only for the Nobel Award but for the generous hospitality and friendly interest shown Mrs. Whipple and myself. For generous words of praise I wish to express personal appreciation and remind you that my work was made possible by the loyal aid of my colleagues - especially Drs. Robbins and Hooper. I am sure I may bring words of greeting to the Nobel Committee from the many workers in the field which lies in the border land between physiology, pathology and medicine. They have told me by word, letter and telegram of their pleasure and the stimulus coming to them through the Nobel Award in this field.

One who comes to Stockholm under such pleasant circumstances cannot fail to speculate about Alfred Nobel. I have learned much about him and have some conception of the respect and affection in which he is held in this country as well as in other countries. Alfred Nobel had vision and idealism and used his great wealth to promote health and happiness for his own people and all mankind. He had a vision of international understanding and strove toward this goal with strong purpose. I wish to assure you of the high esteem in which he is held in my country. His wishes have been carried out loyally by the Nobel Committee without local or political considerations and their decisions are made only after exhaustive study and world wide investigation. For this reason the Nobel Awards are respected all over the world and no higher distinction can come in recognition of scientific endeavour.

Anemia is a decrease in number of red blood cells (RBCs) or less than the normal quantity of hemoglobin in the blood. Anemia may also be diagnosed where there is decreased oxygen-binding ability of each hemoglobin molecule due to deformity or lack in numerical development as in some other types of hemoglobin deficiency. Because hemoglobin (found inside RBCs) normally carries oxygen from the lungs to the capillaries, anemia leads to hypoxia (lack of oxygen) in organs. Since all human cells depend on oxygen for survival, varying degrees of anemia can have a wide range of clinical consequences.

Anemia is the most common disorder of the blood. The several kinds of anemia are produced by a variety of underlying causes. It can be classified in a variety of ways, based on the morphology of RBCs, underlying etiologic mechanisms, and discernible clinical spectra, to mention a few. The three main classes include excessive blood loss (acutely such as a hemorrhage or chronically through low-volume loss), excessive blood cell destruction (hemolysis) or deficient red blood cell production (ineffective hematopoiesis).


Signs and symptoms

Anemia goes undetected in many people, and symptoms can be minor or vague. The signs and symptoms can be related to the underlying cause or the anemia itself.

Most commonly, people with anemia report feelings of weakness, or fatigue, general malaise, and sometimes poor concentration. They may also report dyspnea (shortness of breath) on exertion. In very severe anemia, the body may compensate for the lack of oxygen-carrying capability of the blood by increasing cardiac output. The patient may have symptoms related to this, such as palpitations, angina (if pre-existing heart disease is present), intermittent claudication of the legs, and symptoms of heart failure.

The treatment for vitamin B12-deficient anemia was first devised by William Murphy, who bled dogs to make them anemic, and then fed them various substances to see what (if anything) would make them healthy again. He discovered that ingesting large amounts of liver seemed to cure the disease. George Minot and George Whipple then set about to isolate the curative substance chemically and ultimately were able to isolate the vitamin B12 from the liver. All three shared the 1934 Nobel Prize in Medicine.

On Feb. 13, as controversy swirled around President Bush’s service in the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam War, the White House released more than 400 pages of documents on the press corps, proving, it claimed, that Bush had served honorably and fulfilled his commitment. The sudden rush of records, often redundant, jumbled and out of chronological order, generally left reporters baffled. From Bush’s point of view, the document dump was a political success, as the controversy cooled and the paper trail ran dry.

In retrospect, it’s doubtful that even White House aides understood all the information embedded in the records, specifically the payroll documents. It’s also unlikely they realized how damaging the information could be when read in the proper context. Seven months later, the document dump is coming back to haunt the White House, thanks to researcher Paul Lukasiak, who has spent that time closely examining the paperwork, and more important, analyzing U.S. statutory law, Department of Defense regulations, and Air Force policies and procedures of the 1960s and 1970s. As a result, Lukasiak arrived at the overwhelming conclusion that not only did Bush walk away from his final two years of military obligation, coming dangerously close to desertion, but he attempted to cover up his absenteeism through swindle and fraud.

Lukasiak’s findings, detailed on his Web site the AWOL Project, have since been bolstered and augmented by independent research by the Boston Globe and the Associated Press. On Wednesday, CBS News reported what may be among the most damaging details yet: that Bush’s squadron commander, the late Col. Jerry Killian, complained he was being pressured by higher-ups to give Bush a favorable evaluation after he suspended him from flying for failure to take his annual physical exam. Titled “CYA,” Killian’s memo concluded, “I’m having trouble running interference and doing my job.”

Iraq is reportedly considering ways to force Israel to pay reparations for launching airstrikes on its nuclear reactor near Baghdad.

Iraqi legislators are looking into adopting a resolution that would urge Tel Aviv to pay billions of dollars in compensations for its 1981 attack on the Osiraq (Tammuz) nuclear reactor, Iraqi daily al-Sabbah reported on Thursday.

The lawmakers leading the campaign say they have based their case on United Nations Security Council Resolution 487, insisting that the official UN condemnation gives Baghdad the right to appropriate money for what it has suffered.

Mohammed Naji Mohammed -- a member of parliament with the United Iraqi Alliance coalition -- is leading the campaign against Israel.

Israeli warplanes struck the Iraqi nuclear reactor in a surprise attack code-named Operation Opera in June 1981. Israeli officials at the time claimed that its operation was aimed at preventing then dictator Saddam Hussein from using the reactor weaponization.
