Plot Summary
A commando unit is dropped behind the German lines in Italy and its mission is to blow up a strategic dam. However, the unit is ambushed and only its leader survives. He is picked up by a ragtag group of local youths, who strike a bargain with him--they will help him blow the dam if he will help them get revenge on the Germans, who have taken over their village and killed their parents.

Love him or hate him, when it comes to book sales, Howard Stern has set the bar high. The radio broadcaster, whose "Miss America" reached stores Nov. 7, sold more copies in the first week than Colin Powell and O.J. Simpson did in their first weeks combined.
Sales of "Miss America" leveled off last week at Barnes & Noble, but not before an estimated 4,000 fans kept the self-proclaimed "King of All Media" signing copies for 7 1/2 hours Saturday at the chain's Carle Place, N.Y., store. The book remained B & N's top seller for the second week.
Who are Stern's main competitors in this busy fall publishing season? Powell and Microsoft chairman Bill Gates.

FOR its lead title this fall, Viking is spending $1 million, one of its largest promotional budgets ever, to tell the world about Bill Gates.
That's right. The same Bill Gates of Microsoft whose name is itself a marketing strategy. The same Bill Gates whose preppy face appears regularly on the covers of publications around the world. The same Bill Gates who has spent $150 million to market Windows 95, his latest software product.
Nonetheless, beginning today, Viking and Microsoft will kick off a media blitz for Mr. Gates's new book, "The Road Ahead," that may rival Random House's efforts to push Gen. Colin L. Powell, who recently finished a heavily publicized 23-city tour for his memoir, "My American Journey."
"We don't take anything for granted," said Jonathan Lazarus, vice president of strategic relations at Microsoft, which is providing technical support for the marketing efforts. "Our goal is to get this book read by the most people possible."
As part of their tack, Microsoft and Viking have tried to whet appetites for "The Road Ahead" by guarding the book's contents as fiercely as grizzlies protecting their cubs. No early review copies were sent out, and the books have been shipped in unmarked boxes to deter interception, then locked in regional storehouses until this week.
Everyone with access to the book -- even the 20 or so foreign publishers now scurrying to translate it for their countries -- had to sign confidentiality agreements.
In fact, it was not until yesterday, in an approved excerpt in The Sunday Times of London, that Mr. Gates's forecasts about the information superhighway and his plan to rule the road were made public. As a marketing vehicle, The Times was well tested: this summer, for the introduction of Windows 95, Microsoft paid for an entire daily press run of The Times and gave it away to readers. In the United States, the first excerpts appear in the Nov. 27 edition of Newsweek, which reaches newsstands today.
The book is yet another weapon to help Microsoft -- already the leader in the software industry -- battle for position in the Internet arena. That fact was not lost on Viking or its parent, the Penguin Group, a division of Pearson P.L.C., which presented marketing proposals from each of its offices abroad as well as in the United States when bidding for the book.
Part of the strategy, in addition to a printing of 850,000 books in North America and several hundred thousand overseas, is a very expensive marketing technique called a "one day lay down." The idea is to place a book on sale in a number of countries on the same day -- in this case, Nov. 24

MCCOY: Jim, if a man had a child who'd gone antisocial, killed perhaps, he'd still tend to protect that child.

Japanese Teen Killed Because He Couldn't Understand -- Exchange Student Heard A Shouted `Freeze!' But Kept Walking

TOKYO - All of Japan's national TV networks here took time during their national news programs last night to offer a lesson in English. In tones of amazement and terror, the news anchors explained how the word "freeze" can be used to mean "don't move or I'll shoot!"
An apparent failure to understand that led to tragedy Saturday night when a 16-year-old Japanese exchange student living in Baton Rouge, La., was shot to death by a neighbor.
The high school junior, Yoshihiro Hattori, had been going to a Halloween party when he walked to a neighbor's house by mistake. The neighbor heard someone in his yard, according to news reports, and shouted, "Freeze!" Hattori, after two months in America, did not understand the command and kept walking. The neighbor then opened fire.
For the American news media, it was just another killing. In Japan, though, the real-life Halloween horror story quickly became a major national concern.
This was partly because shooting is rare here. But the case is newsworthy mainly because it tends to confirm all the worst impressions the Japanese have of the United States.
"America - what a country!" said TV Asahi news analyst Takashi Wada. "You can't even walk around outside and be safe. Many people live in fear all the time over there."
"In America, this is called freedom," noted TBS network anchorman Tetsuya Chikushi. "The gun lobby says this is a matter of freedom, to have a gun. This is America's worst disease, I think. Guns everywhere - it's like a cancer."
"No wonder," agreed Chikusi's co-anchor, Akemi Hamao, "we Japanese can't understand American society."
Ownership of almost any weapon, including guns, swords, and daggers, is illegal in Japan. Even among mobsters, guns are so rare that gang battles are usually fought with fists or kitchen knives. There is so little street crime that the Japanese language doesn't have a word for "mugging."
Opinion polls show that most Japanese still rate the United States as "No. 1" in the world. American movies, music, fashion and fast food are the very definition of "cool" for young people here. But nowadays, these feelings are coupled with a sense of disillusionment, even disdain, for a society that is seen here as riddled by crime, drugs and fatal shootings in suburban backyards. About 4 million Japanese visit the United States each year, and many come back with stories of encounters with crime.
Accordingly, journalists here reporting on the Baton Rouge killing had no trouble recalling previous cases: a 16-year-old Japanese high school girl stabbed to death in Fremont, Calif., a group of Japanese college students mugged and robbed in a public park in Denver at midday.
Hattori, the victim in this weekend's case, was a high school junior from Nagoya who had arrived in Baton Rouge in late August. He had recently written his classmates in Nagoya about life in America. News reports said the letter contained news of the soccer team, lessons in tap dancing, and incidents of racial discrimination that the boy had witnessed.
On Saturday evening, Hattori, wearing a tuxedo with a white jacket, walked down the street from his home with a friend, heading for a Halloween party.
There were conflicting reports about the events that led to the shooting, but news services said the teenagers accidentally went to the home of Rodney Peairs, which was adorned with Halloween decorations and a few doors away from their real destination. At some point, Peairs came out with a .44 pistol in his hand and shouted, "Freeze!"
The American boy immediately stopped. But Hattori, who would have been taught in his English classes here that "freeze" has to do with making ice, kept walking. The man shot him in the chest and he died a short time later.
Peairs was questioned but not immediately arrested.

Guns: A Collision Of Cultures That Resulted In Death -- Louisiana Jury Finds Man Who Killed Japanese Youth Not Guilty

BATON ROUGE, La. - "We Japanese don't understand the gun society of America," said Jiji Press correspondent Yoshito Okubo. "And we don't understand why this man had so much fear that he would shoot a boy."
Okubo was one of dozens of Japanese journalists on hand yesterday when a Louisiana jury found Rodney Peairs not guilty of manslaughter in the shooting death of a 16-year-old Japanese exchange student.
Peairs, 32, shot Yoshihiro Hattori with a .44-caliber Magnum after Hattori mistakenly arrived at Peairs' house looking for a Halloween Party on Oct. 17. Peairs testified that Hattori appeared to him as a grinning, potentially crazed intruder who was brandishing a weapon and refused to stop when Peairs yelled "Freeze!"
Hattori was dressed as John Travolta in "Saturday Night Fever" and was carrying only a camera. It is not clear whether he understood what Peairs meant by the command to freeze.
The case was billed as a collision of cultures, and among the Japanese at least, the United States and its fondness for guns was on trial along with Peairs.
The slain student's father, Masaichi Hattori, an engineer, listened impassively as a court interpreter translated descriptions of his son as "out of control . . . a hyperactive Japanese exchange student who thought his job was to scare people."
After hearing the verdict, Hattori said he was saddened but hoped that Americans would respond to his petition drive to limit the availability of guns in the United States. Hattori and others have collected 1.2 million signatures on the petition in Japan.
"I'm very sorry," said Rodney Peairs, 32, crying moments after the 12-member jury announced its unanimous verdict.
Hattori and a friend mistakenly appeared at Peairs' door looking for a Halloween Party that was six houses away. Peairs' wife, Bonnie, testified that she was frightened by Hattori's appearance and his statement: "We're here for the party." Bonnie Peairs said she screamed, slammed the door and yelled to her husband to get his gun.
Peairs' attorney called the shooting "a one-in-a-million deal where everything went wrong at the same time." Peairs told police after the shooting that he made a terrible mistake.
But his attorney defended his client's right to protect his family and home against what he mistakenly thought was a threat.
Shinsuke Tanaka, correspondent for Tokyo Broadcasting System, said one reason the case was so hard for Japanese to understand was because they do not have the same kind of fear, and weapons, as Americans.
In Japan, Tanaka said, "Even a policeman firing his gun at a criminal is top news - even if he doesn't hit him."

Yoshi Day -- Planting More Seeds Of Hope

It would seem a feeble response to the fury of gunfire, and yet Gordon Taylor had a perfectly good reason why, as a protest against violence, he chose to plant a daffodil.
Consider this about daffodils:
They are bright, hopeful, ubiquitous, resilient and perennial. "They're tough. They come back year after year, and that's what we'd like to do," said Gordon, who along with 50 other volunteers yesterday planted 5,000 bulbs in Magnolia to commemorate the second annual Yoshi Day.
Yoshihiro "Yoshi" Hattori was a 16-year-old Japanese exchange student who was shot to death on his way to a Halloween party two years ago today in Baton Rouge. The homeowner who shot him was acquitted of manslaughter, although a jury recently awarded the Hattori family $865,000 in civil damages.
Yoshi, whose case bewildered the Japanese and U.S. public, has come to symbolize all young victims of violence, according to the event's co-sponsors, Washington Ceasefire and Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility.
Volunteers planted the donated bulbs in the median along Thorndyke Avenue West starting at West Plymouth Street.
In Wedgwood, members of the University Unitarian Church did their part: The church building was symbolically wrapped with two strands of ribbon. The red ribbon established the church as a hate-free zone; the yellow ribbon symbolized the right of children to be free of violence.
Said Pastor Peter Raible: "The (ribbon) ceremony is meant to raise people's consciousness, and to raise the question: `Are our children important to us?' Maybe people will see this on TV or in the newspaper, and they'll think: `Have I spent enough time with my kid today?' "
In both the Magnolia and Wedgwood ceremonies, the intent was to keep the issue of youth violence a high priority, even if it only meant planting seeds of remembrance.
As one volunteer put it, the tiny effort today will bear hope tomorrow, as the daffodil bulbs will attest come spring.

“Top floor,” Lloyd said. “He got in just after we finished burning brogan’s body. From the Coast. He was just here when Whitey and I got back from the landfill. No one ever sees him come or go, Trash, but they always know when he’s taken off again. Or when he comes back. Come on, let’s go.”
Four minutes later the elevator arrived at the top floor and Trashcan Man, his face alight and his eyes goggling, stepped out. Lloyd did not.
Trash turned toward him. “Aren’t you—?”
Lloyd managed a smile, but it was a sorry affair. “No, he wants to see you alone. Good luck, Trash.”
And before he could say anything else, the elevator door had slid shut and Lloyd was gone.
Trashcan Man turned around. He was in a wide, sumptuous hallway. There were two doors… and the one at the end was slowly opening. It was dark in there. But Trash could see a form standing in the doorway. And eyes. Red eyes.
Heart thudding slowly in his chest, mouth dry, Trashcan Man started to walk toward that form. As he did, the air seemed to grow steadily cooler and cooler. Goosebumps rushed out on his sunbaked arms. Somewhere deep inside him, the corpse of Donald Merwin Elbert rolled over in its grave and seemed to cry out.
Then it was still again.
“The Trashcan Man,” a low and charming voice said. “How good it is to have you here. How very good.”
The words fell like dust from his mouth: “My… my life for you.”
“Yes,” the shape in the doorway said soothingly. Lips parted and white teeth showed in a grin. “But I don’t think it will come to that. Come in. Let me look at you.”
His eyes overbright, his face as slack as the face of a sleepwalker, Trashcan Man stepped inside. The door closed, std they were in dimness. A terribly hot hand closed over Trashcan Man’s icy one… and suddenly he felt at peace.
Flagg said: “There’s work for you in the desert, Trash. Great work. If you want it.”
“Anything,” Trashcan Man whispered. “Anything.”
Randall Flagg slipped an arm around his wasted shoulders. “I’m going to set you to burn,” he said. “Come, let’s have something to drink and talk about it.”

At 8:45 a.m. on a clear Tuesday morning, an American Airlines Boeing 767 loaded with 20,000 gallons of jet fuel crashes into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. The impact left a gaping, burning hole near the 80th floor of the 110-story skyscraper, instantly killing hundreds of people and trapping hundreds more in higher floors. The only part I remember clearly is where a woman, I assume was my imaginary girlfriend asked me out for drinks or something. She told me she would wear something with holes in it. I hope that was her in my dream, although the woman in the dream seemed to be someone unfamilar though. But I have noticed that happening with other people I know. They are represented, somehow, by a different person, but I think of them as someone specific. I feel like that is part of the manipulation. I have noticed something similar in real dreams, but I don't think it is the same here. I think they are disquising themselves in my dream for some reason. Anyway, if it really was her, she actually doesn't have to worry about dressing down if we were to go out. Of course, if I have my way, it would be a moot point because why would I want to go out with her when I am in such an ugly situation? At the minimum, I would want to be back to work so that I have regained some independence. And hey, next time you are in my dreams, dear imaginary girlfriend, how about wearing a bikini? Red would be good, or yellow maybe. That would be sweet!

Why regiments of vets march with John Kerry
SOMERSWORTH, N. H. — One by one they speak up. They are John Kerry's honor guard of defenders against charges that he is your typical elitist, out-of-touch Massachusetts liberal — a selection of adjectives the Republicans will sell in a five-pack if Kerry is nominated for president.
They are war veterans, mostly of the Vietnam conflict. Their mere presence — at a town meeting here on Sunday night and all over New Hampshire — says that Kerry's is not the liberal campaign conservatives love to parody. As often as not, the veterans go on the attack, saying things about George W. Bush that Kerry himself won't say.
"Senator, both of us served in Vietnam in a very unpopular war and the record shows that George Bush avoided the draft like the plague," says Richard Cooper, a former tech sergeant, referring to Bush's time in the Air National Guard during the Vietnam years.
"The thing that bothered me the most as a veteran was when he played Steve Canyon coming out on the aircraft carrier."
The Kerry crowd likes the question. So does Kerry.

According to the book, those were the -4s. That's freakin' incredible, or so it seems to me for some unexplained reason other than the obvious. And they had 60 of the SAM-6s parked there too. It's incredible no one was knocked down.
I was on that flight to preemptively strike Osirak. Saddamn would have most certainly used any weapons produced from that facility. I didn't care who he used them against, he was a terrorist and needed to be stopped. I was in on the strike because I was being developed into someone that countered his tyrannical leadership.

Back in the year 2003 I wrote a letter on my computer at home and I printed it out on to paper and I put that letter in a stamped envelope for the postal service and I sent that letter through the United States Postal Service. I had the envelope of the letter addressed specifically to the Chief of Operations United States Navy and I referenced a special projects branch I had found on the internet.
I wrote about a computer program I created for the guided missile computer complex system that would transfer memory from one of the computers to the other when we were in the Persian Gulf in 1988. We had two identical systems in place. They were twins you could say. The transfer of code was problematic and the solution was not obvious.
I mailed the letter to the Chief of Operations United States Navy and told them I should have received the Silver Star.

As Pegasus closes on the two base ships, Apollo and Starbuck each take out the flank side missile launchers on both base ships. Cain orders the Pegasus to go right between the two ships and launches its missiles at point-blank range destroying both ships. In the explosion, Starbuck and Apollo lose sight of the Pegasus and decide they have to head back to the Galactica. Later, onboard the Galactica, Cassiopeia is ministering to Sheba in Sickbay when Adama, Starbuck and Apollo visit her. They report that they haven't heard from her father but they assume that he just headed off into space like he did the last time.

LONDON — The turbulent life of Britain's Princess Diana ended tragically early Sunday in a car crash in Paris that also killed her companion, millionaire film producer Dodi Fayed.
Reports said the car overturned in a tunnel along the Seine River while Diana was being pursued by tabloid photographers. Several photographers, or paparazzi, were held for questioning after the crash, police said.
It had not previously been announced that Diana, 36, was in Paris. She and Fayed, 42, had been in the south of France earlier in the week and dined Saturday night at the Ritz, which is owned by Fayed's father, Mohamad Al Fayed, owner of Harrods department store.
The driver of the car, a Ritz security guard, also was killed. Diana's bodyguard, the car's fourth occupant, was injured.
Diana was divorced just over one year ago from Prince Charles, heir to the British throne, after a marital rift that captured world headlines for years. Charles was at Balmoral Castle in Scotland with the couple's two children, Princes William, 15, and Harry, 12. The prince was informed of her death shortly after it was announced in Paris at 6 a.m.
Early reports said Fayed was killed and Diana was seriously injured, but French doctors said later she died at about 4 a.m. after going into cardiac arrest due to massive internal bleeding.
The BBC in London said she had suffered a concussion and serious cuts.
Buckingham Palace announced the death at around 5:20 a.m. London time, saying Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip were "deeply shocked and distressed by this terrible news."
The reading of the announcement on British radio and television was followed by the playing of the national anthem, "God Save the Queen."
If tabloid photographers were directly responsible for Diana's death, that will cause a national outcry in Britain. Perhaps the most photographed woman in the world, she complained constantly of being harassed by photographers. Photos of her often sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The police said the car was demolished. The impact was so great, the radiator of the Mercedes-Benz was hurled onto the knees of the front-seat passenger. The princess was in the back seat.
The site of the accident is on a high-speed road along the Seine with a divided roadway as it passes under the Place de l'Alma to the Place de la Concorde.
On Aug. 21, Diana and Fayed, whose name is Emad but who is commonly called Dodi, flew to the French Mediterranean resort of St. Tropez for their third holiday in each other's company in five weeks.
Fayed's father said in a recent interview that the two were simply "young people getting to know each other."
British newspapers reported that Diana met Fayed almost 10 years ago when he and Charles played polo on opposing teams. Movies he had produced or co-produced included the 1981 Oscar-winning "Chariots of Fire," "The World According to Garp," "F/X," and "Hook."
Reportedly a multimillionaire, Fayed had homes in London, New York, Los Angeles and Switzerland, along with garages filled with luxury cars. He was divorced after a marriage that lasted eight months in 1994.
Diana was catapulted into the public eye at age 19 in 1981 when it was announced that she was engaged to Charles, the heir to the British throne and 12 years her senior.
The couple were married on July 29 that year in London in a ceremony watched by millions and billed as a "fairy-tale wedding."
Diana soon became a mother, to William, in June 1982. But by the birth of her second son, Harry, in September 1984, her biographer Andrew Morton wrote in "Diana: Her True Story," she already was suffering from bulimia and had attempted suicide five times.
From 1986, the first press stories began appearing of cracks in the marriage, and Morton later wrote that Charles had resumed his relationship with a married friend, Camilla Parker Bowles, at that time.
The princess of Wales was beautiful, famous and wealthy, and she won the admiration of millions but found simple happiness elusive.
In an interview published last week, she told the French newspaper Le Monde she would like to move to another country, but couldn't because of her sons, who are in line for the British throne.
"Any sane person would have left long ago. But I cannot. I have my sons," she said.
Diana`s association with Fayed added a sense to stability to Diana's life.
She once said she wanted to be a sort of ambassador, "a queen of people's hearts" and Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair said he believed should carry on her "good works" because "she earns a lot of respect and admiration."
Recently she had been on a crusade against anti-personnel land mines, an effort that had taken her to Bosnia-Herzegovina and Angola.
She often had pleaded with the press-- particularly the pack of photographers who followed her every move--to leave her alone.

Princess Diana Visits Bosnia To Campaign Against Land Mines

GRACANICA, Bosnia-Herzegovina - Princess Diana lent a sympathetic ear yesterday to mothers of children killed or maimed by land mines.
In the second day of her visit to Bosnia in a campaign to ban land mines, Diana traveled from village to village in north-central Bosnia, visiting with land-mine victims and their families along her route.
In Gracanica, 60 miles north of Sarajevo, the family of 29-year-old off-duty Bosnian army soldier Nedim Brkic, who was killed by a mine in May, awaited her visit.
"I am honored with the visit of the princess," said Brkic's mother, Fatima, while she waited for Diana with her son's widow, Persija. "It means somebody is thinking about us, the little people."
Persija, the mother of a 5-year-old son and 3 1/2-year-old daughter, said she knew little about Diana. "I only know that the princess also has two children," she said.
"Oh yes," said Fatima, "she knows what a mother feels."
Diana did not speak to reporters during her stops, and the visits with mine victims were private.
In Dobrnja, one girl, Amela, exhibited a worldliness far beyond her 9 years.
"Every time cameras come to our village," she said, "someone gets a prosthesis."
Millions of land mines still litter Bosnia more than a year and a half after the war ended; about 70 people are injured by the mines every month.
In Sarajevo yesterday, the World Bank said it was financing a $16.2 million effort, with demining units on both the Serb and Muslim-Croat sides of the former front lines.
The United Nations said on Friday it had asked for $23 million to pay for mine removal this year, but only $7 million had been pledged.
The U.S.-based Land Mine Survivors Network organized Diana's trip.

The action does not affect Microsoft's right to use the mark "Windows" or its rights in the Windows operating system products, which are protected by copyrights as well as issued and pending patents.

Setback For Microsoft In War Over `Windows' -- Patent Office Reverses Its Decision Granting Trademark Protection

In an apparent response to competitor complaints, the federal Patent and Trademark Office has reversed an earlier decision granting Microsoft a trademark for its popular "Windows" personal-computer operating system.
Microsoft, which applied for the trademark in August 1990, initially received approval last year. But competitors protested, saying they feared Microsoft might require them to obtain a license to make competing products such as spreadsheets and word processors.
Last week the federal agency tentatively denied making Windows a trademark, in effect saying Microsoft cannot protect the word. Microsoft has six months to respond. Company officials said it will protest.
"You have to show that you yourself are trying to aggressively protect the trademark" to win the federal OK, said Hemingway.

On Friday, 2 January 1981 the Yorkshire Rippers five-year reign of terror came to an end. In the previous five years, beginning in July 1975 with his first attack, he had killed thirteen women and left seven others for dead. The seven survivors were told how lucky they were, but with physical, emotional and psychological scars that would never completely heal, they didnt feel very lucky. Some would even believe that they would have been better off if the man they had known for so long as The Ripper, had succeeded in killing them. As the nation celebrated the final triumph of good over evil, the Yorkshire Rippers family sat stunned. It was incomprehensible to them that the Peter William Sutcliffe that they knew and loved could possibly be responsible for the heinous crimes of the Yorkshire Ripper.
Peter William Sutcliffe was the first-born son of John and Kathleen Sutcliffe. He was born in Bingley, an industrial county of Yorkshire, England, on 2 June 1946 weighing only 5lb, but healthy in every way. As they took him home from the hospital, both parents were confidant that their son would grow to be like his father, a burly man who loved to play and watch any type of sport and an extrovert who loved a drink at the local pub. John looked forward to the day that he and his son would share the manly pleasures of life, but Peter would not grow to be a mans man like his father. He was a quiet, shy boy who much preferred to stay indoors with his mother than join in the rough games of his younger brothers and sisters, choosing to read rather than play sport. Greatly intimidated by his fathers aggressive masculinity, he found a safe haven in his mother, a gentle loving woman who adored all six of her children.
At school, which he always hated, Peter did not attempt to integrate with the other children. He would spend each play hour standing alone in a safe corner, away from the other children, avoiding the rough games from which he, being small and not particularly strong, invariably came out the worse for wear. His fathers concern for his son during his primary years led him to visit Peter at the school each afternoon, hoping to encourage his son to join in with the other children, but to no avail. The move to Secondary School was no better for Peter. He became the subject of severe bullying, culminating in his truancy from school for two weeks, before his parents were informed of his absence. He had spent the two weeks hiding in the upstairs loft, reading comics and books by torchlight. Although the bullying stopped after the school took action, Peter, who never fought with other boys or chased after the girls, was seen as different, set apart from the rest.
In the last years of secondary school, Peter attempted to fit in with the other boys and overcome the stigma of outcast he had been given in his younger years. He took up bodybuilding and was soon, to his fathers great delight, able to beat both of his brothers at arm wrestling. While still showing no sign of interest in girls, he would learn to play some sports in order to fit in, but his fear of leaving a mark or bringing attention to himself would cause him to never excel in any area of his schooling. He left school at the age of fifteen with no clear focus of what he wanted to do with his life. Over the next two years, Peter would change jobs regularly. He started in the mill where his father worked, but within a few weeks left to begin an engineering apprenticeship, which he quit after only nine months. His next job was as a labourer in a factory, but again, after only a short time, he quit to work as a gravedigger at the Bingley Cemetery.
Peter continued to be devoted to his mother all through his teen years and would happily run errands for her and spend a great deal of time with her. Things were not so good with his father who, Peter felt, spent far too much time away from the family home with sport and socialising, an issue that Peter had always resented. For John Sutcliffe, his greatest concerns about his son were allayed by the time Peter celebrated his eighteenth birthday. Although he never did share his fathers love of sport, he had taken up bodybuilding and other manly pursuits, including a passion for riding and repairing motorbikes. The only other concern was that Peter still showed no interest in girls, and had never had a girlfriend.
In his twentieth year, while with friends at the Royal Standard, a hotel in Manningham Lane, Peter deliberately approached a girl for the first time. Her name was Sonia Szurma, the second daughter of Maria and Bodhan Szurma, immigrants from Czechoslovakia, now living in Bradford. Polish-born Bodhan, a physical education teacher and university lecturer in Czechoslovakia, was not happy with his daughters choice at first, but in time he would come to see Peter as a hard working man who was careful with money, and most importantly, who treated his daughter well. Sonia held hopes of becoming a teacher when she met Peter, and although they would not marry for another eight years, the intention to marry had always been an unspoken expectation for the couple.
In the eyes of John and Kathleen Sutcliffe, Peter had grown up to be the ideal son. As far as they could tell, his only flaw was his work record, which was tainted by his habitual lateness, and eventually cost him his job at the cemetery, after which he held a number of labouring positions. By April 1973, this final problem seemed to be cured, when he began his first really steady job doing permanent night shift at the Brittania Works of Anderton International. In 1974, the family pressure for Peter and Sonia to marry had finally convinced him that they should do so, even if they hadnt yet saved for a deposit on a house and Sonia had not been able to complete her teaching degree, because of a schizophrenic episode during the second year into her course. With the decision that they would live together with Sonias parents, they married on 10 August, Sonias 24th birthday.
Peter had succeeded in creating a public persona that was exemplary, described by many as hard working and quiet, a caring and loving husband who kept to himself with no outward signs of the violence and depravity he had hidden deep within him. There were very few who had ever seen the other side of Peter. Gary Jackson, who had worked with Peter at the cemetery, had found his pleasure in playing morbid pranks with the skeletons and the theft of rings from the hands of some of those he buried, to be more than a little macabre. His brother-in-law, Robin Holland, would often go out drinking with Peter in the red-light districts of Yorkshire where Peter would often brag about his exploits with the prostitutes in the area. While at home, he would continue to play the part of family saint who would make grand stands about the immorality of men who two-timed their wives. Eventually, Peters hypocrisy became too much for Robin and he refused to go out with him any more. Trevor Birdsall had become friends with Peter at about the same time as he met Sonia and would eventually report to police his suspicions that Peter Sutcliffe was the Yorkshire Ripper. Trevor and Peter would spend hundreds of hours over the next few years in pubs and cruising the streets of the red-light districts in Peters succession of cars. Peter had seemed to have a liking for prostitutes, mixed with a strange anger. Trevor remembered vividly a night in Bradford in 1969, when Peter had left him in the car for a few minutes. When he returned, Peter told him that he had tried to hit a prostitute with a brick he had put inside a sock, but the sock had fallen apart and the brick had fallen out. Despite his strange behaviour, Trevor would remain friends with Peter until his arrest in 1981.

Plot Summary
Dan Adams resigns his position as prosecutor on the district attorney's staff and sets out to clean up a gang of fake-accident racketeers. He gets a job with an insurance company, and assures the company president he will get the goods on the gang or die in the attempt. At the company offices, he meets Carol Carter and she, believing he is a shyster (possibly redundant) lawyer in the employ of the racketeers gives him as little help as possible. Dan visits his brother Eddie, who is mixed up with the gang and tries to make him break away. Eddie is belligerent but finally, because of the pressure brought by Dan and his wife Tonia, agrees to go straight. The gang, led by "Duke" Trotti, fears he will squeal and they kill him, plus they make his death look like an accident and plan to collect on it. Dan is closing in on the gang when Carol, who is now his assistant, comes up with some conclusive evidence, but "Duke" has plans to get rid of her before she can give the information to Dan.

Only Athletes Can Rescue These Games

ATLANTA - The first thing you noticed was the quiet. In the downtown streets people spoke softly. The city that was teeming a mere eight hours ago now felt ghostly.
The main pedestrian walkway outside Centennial Olympic Park was closed. Soldiers and cops and barriers kept the curious a full block away.
The thick throng of people lazily strolling to and from the park had vanished to the hotels and suburbs and neighboring cities. The party tents were up, but empty. The music stages were silent.
It was quiet, eerily quiet. Downtown felt like the carnival left town, but the rides remained. It felt like the Olympics had ended and no medals had been won.
A people's park had become a crime scene. The Olympics' gathering place had been defaced by an act of terror.
Inside the gates of the park, investigators gathered evidence, climbing on the roofs of the buildings and crawling on their hands and knees in the wet grass near the bombsite.
Serious people in blue jump suits, wearing yellow gloves and heavy boots, had taken the place of partygoers wearing shorts and T-shirts, tank tops and sandals.
A homemade pipe bomb, placed in a knapsack and left on the grounds of the crowded park, exploded on the Olympics early yesterday morning and these Games didn't feel the same.
One person was killed from the blast and 111 others were injured as the city was seized with anxiety.
Bomb squads zig-zagged across Atlanta to investigate suspicious packages. A bomb scare in the Atlanta Underground caused a panicky evacuation. Everything and every stranger seemed suspicious.
Could it happen again? Would it happen again? How many crazies have landed in town?

Atlanta Park Reopens -- Service Held For Victims Of Bombing; FBI Hunts For Suspect

ATLANTA - Centennial Olympic Park reopened this morning as thousands determined to put Saturday's tragic bombing behind them streamed into the site carrying carnations and heavy hearts and hoping to rekindle the Olympic spirit.
"There's been tremendous suppressed demand to see what's going on," said Les Dinkin of Westport, Conn. "People in this country aren't used to terrorism. They feel a privilege has been taken away."
Olympic organizers, determined to move beyond the incident that left one dead and 111 injured, reopened the gates three days after the explosion that rocked Atlanta in the early-morning hours. A Turkish cameraman also died of a heart attack while running to cover the blast.
While federal authorities continued their search for the bomber, the park welcomed those who had lined up outside. They were allowed to enter in groups of 10 to 12 at a time, passing through at least two checkpoints of uniformed guards.
Blood had been washed from the engraved bricks, debris had been cleared, and fresh sheets of corrugated aluminum gleamed at the base of a lighting tower that took the full force of the blast.
There was no visible electronic screening, but a large red-and-white sign spelled out some new rules: By entering the park, visitors agreed to random searches of their packages. It also warned against leaving packages unattended and asked visitors to report any suspicious behavior.
Andrew Young, co-chairman of the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (ACOG) and an ordained minister, led a service of remembrance and renewal from the stage of the AT&T Global Olympic Village. The pipe bomb had exploded just to the right of that stage.
Hellie Mathes, 64, of Little Rock, Ark., said she came to the reopening with her two daughters "to make a statement. . . . I feel like we cannot allow one person to destroy something wonderful."
Atlanta Police chief Beverly Harvard said while strolling in the park that the site was as safe as any in her city. "But there is no 100 percent guarantee of anything," she said. "You have to recognize the volume of people coming in here, even right now. People are not going to be scared away or frightened away."
Some today came to mourn, others to gawk. A large group crowded around the grassy area where the bomb detonated, ripping apart a section of a light and sound tower used for one of the four concert stages in the park.
The Washington Post reported today that the bomb was made using a simple clock or kitchen timer and low-grade explosive powder that is easily obtained.
The shrapnel that sprayed from the bomb included masonry nails packed in a plastic food container around the explosives, the newspaper said.
David Tubbs, the FBI spokesman in Atlanta, said the agency had prepared composite drawings of "individuals who may have been seen in the area about the time of the explosion." But he stressed that they were not considered suspects.
"I'm not willing at this time to label anyone a suspect," he said.
However, The New York Times reported that the FBI has a composite sketch of the man suspected of planting the bomb.
The FBI also released a transcript of the 911 call that warned Atlanta police of the bomb. The call was received 30 minutes before the explosion, but word of it was never relayed to officers at the scene.
Tubbs said the call, in its entirety, consisted of an American man with no distinctive accent saying: "There is a bomb in Centennial park. You have 30 minutes."
