Opera to breathe new life into Mercer Arena
SEATTLE - Mayor Greg Nickels today announced a deal to transform the aging and mothballed Mercer Arena into a new home for the Seattle Opera.
Under the proposed 30-year agreement, Mercer Arena would house Seattle Opera’s operations - administrative, rehearsal, educational, technical support, costume and scenic studios space - providing opportunities for the public to experience the behind-the-scenes world of the Opera. Currently these functions are housed in several facilities throughout the greater Seattle area.
“The fat lady was about to sing for Mercer Arena, but this agreement with the Opera will breathe new life into an old building,” Nickels said. “It will make this art form more popular by bringing the back of the house into the public eye. And the agreement fits our vision of keeping Seattle Center a compelling place for arts and culture for the century ahead.”

FIFTEEN STARS AND STRIPES
When two new States were admitted to the Union (Kentucky and Vermont), a resolution was adopted in January of 1794, expanding the flag to 15 stars and 15 stripes. This flag was the official flag of our country from 1795 to 1818, and was prominent in many historic events. It inspired Francis Scott Key to write "The Star-Spangled Banner" during the bombardment of Fort McHenry; it was the first flag to be flown over a fortress of the Old World when American Marine and Naval forces raised it above the pirate stronghold in Tripoli on April 27, 1805; it was the ensign of American forces in the Battle of Lake Erie in September of 1813; and it was flown by General Jackson in New Orleans in January of 1815.
However, realizing that the flag would become unwieldy with a stripe for each new State, Capt. Samuel C. Reid, USN, suggested to Congress that the stripes remain 13 in number to represent the Thirteen Colonies, and that a star be added to the blue field for each new State coming into the Union. Accordingly, on April 4, 1818, President Monroe accepted a bill requiring that the flag of the United States have a union of 20 stars, white on a blue field, and that upon admission of each new State into the Union one star be added to the union of the flag on the fourth of July following its date of admission. The 13 alternating red and white stripes would remain unchanged. This act succeeded in prescribing the basic design of the flag, while assuring that the growth of the Nation would be properly symbolized.
Eventually, the growth of the country resulted in a flag with 48 stars upon the admission of Arizona and New Mexico in 1912. Alaska added a 49th in 1959, and Hawaii a 50th star in 1960. With the 50-star flag came a new design and arrangement of the stars in the union, a requirement met by President Eisenhower in Executive Order No. 10834, issued August 21, 1959. To conform with this, a national banner with 50 stars became the official flag of the United States. The flag was raised for the first time at 12:01 a.m. on July 4, 1960, at the Fort McHenry National Monument in Baltimore, Maryland.

WASHINGTON - It's never pleasant when the big boss urges you out on a shaky limb and then saws it off. Pulls the rug out from under you. Makes you look a fool.
It's doubly difficult when your boss is the president of the United States, the leader of the Free World, and he does all this in full view of the entire universe.
That describes the mortifying mess in which President Clinton and his most loyal defenders found themselves mired yesterday.
House Democratic leader Dick Gephardt of Missouri said he was disappointed in Clinton's personal conduct. He added that it is his "most fervent hope for the nation that this investigation can be brought to its long-overdue conclusion . . ."
Female supporters `saddened'
Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., a staunch Clinton defender during the recent House campaign-finance investigations, said she was "saddened and disappointed" by Clinton's confession but "glad he's taking responsibility."
That sentiment was echoed by many of Clinton's female supporters.

I clearly remember this aviation incident in 1994. That day 2 July 1994 was only five days after 27 June 1994.
I looked it up a short while ago because I was trying to remember other details about 1994 in my memory. I mentioned that incident in my private journal back in 2006 and I haven't looked up the exact day but I think that was pre-May 2006.
The way I remember it, I was sitting a bar in Charlotte North Carolina that I had started going to just about every evening after work. The bartender was also a fan of Atlanta Braves baseball, as was I. I told him one time he resembled in appearance a guy I went to United States Navy basic training with in 1984 but I don't think he ever actually told me whether he knew that guy and I wondered if they were related.
The way I remember it, I heard that thunderstorm roll through and I thought later, probably talking to other people in that bar, that we probably could have seen that aircraft flying nearby if we had walked to the frontdoor of that bar. That bar was not very far from where I lived at the time at Whitehall Estates in Charlotte North Carolina and that area is close to the airport. Commercial jet airplanes were always screaming over my apartment. I looked on the map to see if I could see the name of that bar in the images but I don't see it although I clearly remember where that bar was located. There is an Enterprise rental car building in that parking lot. I think that was back in there still in 1994. I don't think I was dating that woman named Caitlin at that time. I think she started coming into that bar later and we dated for a while. Sometime later, 1995 maybe, I moved to Dresden and that was across town and over on Independence blvd.
The typically lousy episode of "The Simpsons" that just finished makes me want to rush through and post my next report, which I largely finished a couple hours ago, but I am going to wait until tomorrow to finish it. As though it matters if I post it tonight or tomorrow.

In 1966 Rolls-Royce completed a design for the new engine, which was designated the RB.211. A concerted sales effort resulted in the sale of 555 RB.211s to the Lockheed Corporation for installation in their new line of L-1011 Tristar jetliners. The sale, however, was extremely costly to Rolls-Royce, which was forced to lower its price in order to beat a counter offer from General Electric. In order to meet the increasing cost of the project, any available capital from the automobile division was systematically diverted to the aero-engine division.
The construction of the first RB.211 commenced in the summer of 1969. When the engine was tested, however, it became apparent that several design flaws would seriously delay the project. As a result of penalty clauses written into its supply contracts, Rolls-Royce was obligated to remit substantial payments to its customers. This forced the company to announce in October that its interim dividend would be reduced from 4 to 3%. Moreover, company officials refused to address specific problems with the RB.211. The situation continued to deteriorate for over a year, when the gravity of Rolls-Royce's condition was finally revealed.
On November 11, 1970 the British government announced that it was extending a loan to Rolls-Royce totaling £60 million. Three-quarters of this sum was for anticipated losses on the RB.211 project, and the remaining £15 million was earmarked for operating expenses. In addition, it was revealed that executive control of Rolls-Royce would be turned over to a four man committee. Two days later it was announced in the House of Commons that the government would nationalize Rolls-Royce.
