"Yellow"
Look at the stars,
Look how they shine for you,
And everything you do,
Yeah, they were all yellow.
I came along,
I wrote a song for you,
And all the things you do,
And it was called "Yellow".
So then I took my turn,
Oh what a thing to have done

The sound was almost deafening of the comet debris pummelling the hull of my spacecraft as I navigated through the comet tail towards the surface in the first of 8 transits. The video steam of me floating unconscious with blood in my helmet was automatically transmitted for a while back to Earth until it stopped. The exterior cameras of my Project Orion spaceship continued to transmit video of my shuttlecraft in the far distance and eventually ground control on Earth noticed that I had managed to find a way to propell myself back to the Orion ship in my spacesuit and I captured my tether line right around the exterior camera. After I changed into a new helmet, I fired up the second shuttle and made my next ingress to the comet surface.
I was convinced afterwards that only my extensive experience in combat in the skies of the Vietnam War ensured that I was successful in making those flights into the comet.

Tom Petty Lyrics
American Girl Lyrics
Well, she was an American girl
Raised on promises
She couldn't help thinkin'
That there was a little more to life somewhere else
After all it was a great big world
With lots of places to run to
And if she had to die tryin'
She had one little promise she was gonna keep
O yeah, all right
Take it easy, baby
Make it last all night
She was an American girl
Well it was kind of cold that night,
She stood alone on her balcony
Yeah, she could hear the cars roll by,
Out on 441 like waves crashin' on the beach
And for one desperate moment
There he crept back in her memory
God it's so painful when something that's so close
Is still so far out of reach
O yeah, all right
Take it easy, baby
Make it last all night
She was an American girl

Why do I have these thoughts about a jet trying to strafe me as I was floating down to the ground in a parachute. I see myself, through my eyes, shooting at the canopy of the jet with my pistol. After I thought of that again, I remembered that scene from "Saving Private Ryan" where Tom Hanks' character is shooting at that tank with his sidearm.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: August 11, 2006
I remember complaining one time, probably 1999, about parachutes. I said I wonder how many people died in accidents before someone thought to put that hole in the top of them. I supposed that the hole at the top allowed air to flow through it and stabilize the parachute so that it wouldn't rock over so far that it collapsed.

That reminds me of something I said to Vince Maraia at Microsoft in February 2002. I told him that I had been feeling something like invincibility until I had that second bicycle accident on 2/1/02 and hit my head. He said something in response that suggests to me he knows who I really was but he said that I should be feeling invincible.
Had a vivid dream a few hours ago. The was several of us in training to rescue a hostage from a large group of armed men. The part I remember the most was of some kind of parachute training where I jumped off a tall building. I was wearing the khaki uniform of a U.S. Navy officer. I think Mogge was the guy I remember getting medical training. I didn’t really expect we were going to get the guy out alive but that was our objective.

That one time, for some reason I can't remember, I was talking to Mike Torbeson, and I made some comments about the development of parachutes. I said something about how I was wondering how many people had died in parachute accidents before they put the hole in the top of the parachute. Seems very interesting now I would say something like that considering my theory about falling out of the space shuttle in 1981. As I understand it, that hole stabilized the parachute so that it doesn't rock over and, in a sense, deflate. Maybe that has something to do with the space shuttle in 1981 or other experiences as I must have had a lot of experience with parachutes. Based on my theories, I had to eject from an aircraft at least twice.

There was also an element in that dream, I think at the point where I was supposed to do the fly-by of Lily Jang, that I realized I had let myself gain too much altitude. I think I was having trouble by that time with reading the instrument panel, because it all had become sort of blurry, and I didn't realize I had been drifting upwards for too long. I am not certain what I did after that point but I can recall vaguely that I was still flying.
JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 01/13/08 4:04 AM
I can still sort of visualize the lights on the highway and other reference points I used to navigate my way along to the point I was supposed to fly over.
JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 01/13/08 4:05 AM
I didn't seem to gain a tremendous amount of altitude, so I don't know what that means. I would say that I might have gained 100 feet of altitude, which seems unimportant for that kind of fly-by so I don't understand that element of the dream.
JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 01/13/08 4:09 AM
I stomped on the left foot pedal, but I seemed to roll to the right. I am not certain if that is correct or not. I want to say that if I stomped on the left pedal, then I would have done a snap-roll to the left.
JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 01/13/08 4:10 AM
Or maybe that is correct.
The left foot pedal would raise - I think it would raise - the left aileron, which I think is on the tail, or maybe it would raise the flap on the trailing edge of the left wing. When that control surface is raised, it seems....now that I think it though, I think the aircraft would roll in that direction. The control surface catches the air and creates a drag on that side of the aircraft, which causes it to change attitude on that side. Something like that. I feel slightly confused.

I also remember a couple key moments of all this. The first one was when our new director started working in our group. She had us all meet together and the first thing she wanted us to do was stand up and take 30 seconds to describe a little about ourselves. Later I would reflect on a couple things about that request. One was that the first manager to stand up, whom I think was also the first person, spent a whole lot more than 30 seconds talking about himself. I brought this up to her later right before I left because I had been hoping that she was demonstrating a concept that I started thinking of as "time awareness."

I woke up this time thinking, partially visualizing, flying an F-14 Tomcat over the ocean somewhere. I can almost visualize another F-14 flying on my wing. Suddenly, the other F-14 exploded but I can't actually visualize that part. I think both people parachuted out of that aircraft. Apparently another missile hit my aircraft, blew off the canopy, and knocked me unconscious. Then I can almost see us traveling straight down towards the ocean surface and the RIO in the seat behind me was yelling at me to wake up. I pulled up and engaged the two aircraft that fired at us. One was hit by my Sparrow but the other Sparrow missed. I went in and finished off the other one up close.

Captain Miller: They were killed in action.
Pvt. James Frederick, Ryan: No, that can't be. They're both - That... That can't be. My brothers are still in grammar school.

I have been thinking again about that series of scenes in Mel Gibson's "The Patriot" where his son's girlfriend sews his son into that bag so they can spend the night together. I am still wondering if that is how I spent my last night with Phoebe before I left for the comet in 1975.
I have been wondering if that was reference to a body bag. That sounds grotesque but it was something about how she would later know, if I didn't survive, that I was going out to that comet for her.

The lights go out and I can't be saved
Tides that I tried to swim against
Have brought me down upon my knees
Oh I beg, I beg and plead, singing
Come out of things unsaid
Shoot an apple off my head and a
Trouble that can't be named
A tiger's waiting to be tamed, singing
You are
You are
Confusion never stops
Closing walls and ticking clocks
Gonna come back and take you home
I could not stop that you now know, singing
Come out upon my seas
Cursed missed opportunities
Am I a part of the cure?

Sergeant Horvath: Stars.
Lieutenant Dewindt: Yeah, Brigadier General Amend, deputy commander, 101st. Some fucking genius had the great idea of welding a couple of steel plates onto our deck to keep the general safe from ground fire. Unfortunately, they forgot to tell me about it until we were just getting airborne. Well, that's like trying to fly a freight train. OK? Gross overload. Trim characteristics all shot to hell. I nearly broke both my arms trying to keep her level. And when- and when we released, you know I cut as hard as I could, tried to gain some altitude and still keep her from stalling. We came down like a fucking meteor. And that is how we ended up. And the others, they stopped easy enough OK, though, you know? We were just-we were just too damn heavy, you know? The grass was wet, downward slope and all. 22 guys dead.
Captain Miller: All that for a general?
Lieutenant Dewindt: One man.

John Robert Gregg
John Robert Gregg, (born June 17, 1867, Rockcorry, County Monaghan, Ire.—died Feb. 23, 1948, New York, N.Y., U.S.), Irish-born American inventor of a shorthand system named for him.
Gregg developed an interest in speed writing when he was 10 years old, and by the age of 21, in Glasgow, he had published a 28-page pamphlet, Light-Line Phonography (1888), presenting his own shorthand alphabet, which was phonetic and based on the regular cursive movements of familiar longhand. This alphabet later was adapted to 13 languages.
In 1893 Gregg moved to the United States. From 1900 he edited the Gregg Writer, a monthly magazine; and from 1920 he edited the American Shorthand Teacher, later called Business Education World. The basic Gregg book was Gregg Shorthand, first published in 1902 as a revision of Light-Line Phonography and revised frequently thereafter. He also published such works as The Private Secretary (1943). Gregg was president of the Gregg Publishing Company, based in New York City, and chairman of the board of the Gregg Publishing Company, Ltd., of London and of the Gregg Schools, Ltd., of London.
