Segway Recalls 6,000 Scooters

September 27, 2003 Peter Pae Times Staff Writer

A Jetsons-like stand-up scooter, ridden by everyone from President Bush to Jay Leno, has fallen down in the eyes of safety regulators.

The maker of the electric Segway Human Transporter -- which has been called both a revolutionary transportation vehicle and a silly fad -- agreed Friday to recall all 6,000 of the contraptions that have been sold because several riders lost control of them, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced.

At least three riders have fallen off the scooters when power lagged, including one who suffered head injuries that required stitches, the agency said.

Under certain conditions, the two-wheeled scooters may not have enough power to keep upright, such as when trying to speed up rapidly if the battery is waning, privately owned Segway said.

The Manchester, N.H.-based company said the glitch could be repaired with new software. Dealers will install software in the scooter's computer system to better monitor battery power levels; it will automatically shut off the engine when battery levels get too low.

It was unclear whether the voluntary recall would affect sales of the $4,950 machine. Developed by inventor Dean Kaman, a Segway resembles an upright lawn mower with handlebars. It has five gyroscopes to help sense body movements so that when riders lean slightly forward, the scooter zips ahead. When the driver leans back, the scooter stops. The machine can go as fast as 12.5 mph and travel as far as 15 miles between battery recharges.

Kamen, who developed various kidney dialysis machines and insulin pumps, spent nearly $100 million developing the scooter, which was unveiled two years ago on ABC's "Good Morning America."

Fans say the scooter is easier to ride than a bike or a skateboard. And the company, which has promoted the device as a way to relieve traffic congestion, has lobbied states to allow Segways to be driven on sidewalks. More than half the states have passed such measures.

Although the scooter has been marketed to tech-savvy consumers on Amazon.com, sales have been relatively modest. Still, the machine has generated plenty of publicity.

Besides Leno, David Letterman has likewise ridden one during his late-night talk show. President Bush also gave the Segway some notoriety when he tumbled off one in June. He was not hurt.

Though the public has been slow to respond, the machine has been tested by the U.S. Postal Service, the National Park Service and various companies. Officials in Seattle and Chicago also have bought Segways for use by meter maids and parking enforcement officers.

Locally, Walt Disney Co. workers have used a fleet of 13 transporters at the theme park complex in Anaheim and have been spotted driving Segways around Tomorrowland.

For their part, Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies began patrolling Metropolitan Transportation Authority facilities last year with Segway transporters. "They're really pleased with them, and they plan to continue using them," said MTA spokesman Ed Scannell.

Since deputies started using Segways, he added, the number of vandalism incidents and robberies has declined. "They're very quiet and get you to places more quickly," Scannell said.

Still, the recall is likely to bolster critics of the transporter.

Secret of 'It' Is Out: It's a Motor Scooter

December 03, 2001 Associated Press

The ultra-secret "It" invention that has kept the high-tech world abuzz for nearly a year is a self-balancing, motorized scooter that costs less that 5 cents a day to operate, Time magazine reports in today's edition.

Inventor Dean Kamen believes the machine, code-named It but officially known as Segway, will eventually replace cars in crowded downtown areas by enabling users to zip around at virtually no cost and no harm to the environment.

The two-wheeled device uses a complex array of gyroscopes and computers to mimic the human body's sense of balance, Time said. Users lean forward to move forward, lean back to reverse course and turn by twisting a handle.

The U.S. Postal Service plans to test the device for its letter carriers, and Amazon.com Inc. will run trials for use in its warehouses, the article said.

The company expects to introduce a consumer model for $3,000 within a year, and has built a factory near its headquarters in Manchester, N.H., that will be able to make 40,000 Segways per month, Time said.

Applications to operations research

In line with recent work in swarm intelligence research involving optimization algorithms inspired by the behavior of social insects (including bees, ants and termites), and vertebrates such as fish and birds, there has recently been research on using bee waggle dance behavior for efficient fault-tolerant routing. From the abstract of Wedde, Farooq, and Zhang (2004):

In this paper we present a novel routing algorithm, BeeHive, which has been inspired by the communicative and evaluative methods and procedures of honey bees. In this algorithm, bee agents travel through network regions called foraging zones. On their way their information on the network state is delivered for updating the local routing tables. BeeHive is fault tolerant, scalable, and relies completely on local, or regional, information, respectively. We demonstrate through extensive simulations that BeeHive achieves a similar or better performance compared to state-of-the-art algorithms.

Another bee-inspired stigmergic computational technique called bee colony optimization is employed in Internet Server Optimization.

The Zigbee RF protocol is named after the waggle dance.

CHAPTER TWO: OPERATION CROSSROADS

James P. Delgado

The end of the Pacific War, and hence World War II, was brought about by the surrender of Japan following the dropping of atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These were, respectively, the second and third nuclear detonations on the surface of the planet. The first bomb was detonated at Alamagordo, New Mexico, on July 16, 1945, at 5:30 a.m. The second bomb was detonated over Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, at 8:15 a.m. The third bomb was detonated over Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, at 10:58 a.m. The fourth and fifth bombs were detonated during the atomic tests at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

The first large-scale atomic weapons effects tests conducted by the United States, the "Able" test detonation of July 1, 1946, at 9:00 a.m. local time at Bikini, and the "Baker" test detonation of July 25, 1946, at approximately 8:35 a.m. local time, were the first two of the three-part "Operation Crossroads" tests. (The third detonation, the "Charlie" test, was cancelled.) Formulated at the war's end and approved by President Harry S Truman on January 10, 1946, Operation Crossroads was not only the first of more than 850 publicly announced atomic weapons tests. It was a major demonstration of the power of the bomb and of the nation that had produced and used it, the United States. The name was selected because the atomic bomb represented a "crossroads"--from conventional to nuclear war.
