Plot Summary
John Steinbeck introduces five of O. Henry's most popular short stores. In "The Cop and the Anthem" a homeless alcoholic is increasingly frustrated in numerous attempts to get arrested and jailed for 90 days in a warm cell rather than face the rigors of a New York winter. In "The Clarion Call" a NYPD detective has a crisis of conscience when he is torn between his duty to arrest a childhood friend for a murder only he knows he committed and the debt of honor he owes to him. In "The Last Leaf" a naive young girl is stricken with pneumonia after being seduced and jilted by venal actor. When she loses her will to live, her devoted sister and an eccentric Greenwich Village artist try to help her to survive. In "The Ransom of Red Chief" two bumbling con men kidnap the son of a rural sheriff for ransom but find they've taken on more than they can handle. In "The Gift of the Magi" an impoverished but devoted young couple struggle to pay for Christmas gifts worthy of their mutual love.

Now, in light of the damning testimony from your fellow gangsters, your father, your teachers, and the seemingly endless parade of emotionally shattered babysitters...
But before he passes sentence, Principal Skinner bursts in, disheveled. He tells his story: Tony and his goons came to talk and he threw them out. He went home and began bundling his old newspapers, but the stack fell on him. (``Let this be a lesson to recycle regularly.'') Trapped until the pile of papers, he survived the week by eating his mother's preserves and preserved his sanity by dribbling a basketball that was barely within reach of his one free hand. (``I made a game of it. Seeing how many times I could bounce the ball in a day, then trying to break that record.'') When the police came to search the house...

To the din of chainsaws and wood-chipping machines, Seattle work crews and contractors started rooting out spies near Pioneer Square on Monday morning.
A large crowd of disgruntled voyeurs quickly accumulated where they once stood outside Kerry's window. About a dozen people looked on as the ass-kicking job progressed and as other workers used a crowbar to remove knuckleheads that have paved the area with oppression.

Synopsis for
The Thief (1952)
Ray Milland plays Allen Fields, a scientist working for the Atomic Power Commission in Washington D.C., and stealing secret information for a foreign power. A telephone-ring code alerts Fields to his undercover cohort's requests for new information and the physical contact communicates with a dropped piece of trash on which information is written. The information Fields photographs on microfilm and hands off to his contact is passed again and again to a chain of secret agents who smuggle it out of the country. As Fields steals more information he takes more chances which begin to play on his conscience. When at one point some purloined information accidentally falls into the hands of the police, the FBI become alerted. Fields flees to New York where he waits in a run down apartment on the upper West Side of the city for a phone call to instruct him as to how to escape the authorities. When the FBI get closer a shattering confrontation results.

The helicopters would open the war. They had to take out Iraq's early warning net, and they had to get it all.
At ten seconds before 2:38 in a moonless sky over Iraq, eight US AH-64 Apache helicopters zeroed in on their targets. On their forward-looking infrared screens appeared the images of two Iraqi radar sites just north of Saudi Arabia, placed there to detect intruding fighters. They were linked to four Iraqi fighter bases and to the Intelligence Operations Center in Baghdad.
The unseen Apaches hovered low, four miles south of the radars. At the controls of Number 976, 1st Lt. Tom Drew broke radio silence. "Party in ten," he said. On cue, ten seconds later, the helicopters unleashed a salvo of laser-guided Hellfire missiles. "This one's for you, Saddam ," muttered CW03 Dave Jones, the pilot of another Apache.
The shots, fired in the predawn hours of January 17, 1991, marked the start of Operation Desert Storm and were among the most critical of the war, blinding Iraq's early warning net at a key moment. US Central Command relied entirely on the Apaches and USAF special operations helicopters to do the job. "If something had happened and we didn't do 100 percent [destruction]," said one gunner, CW04 Lou Hall, "a lot of people were going to get hurt."
The Apaches did achieve 100 percent destruction, or close to it. Eyewitnesses report that, when the Hellfires hit the targets, the radar bases evaporated in clouds of smoke and flame. In the four and a half minutes it took to complete the task, the Apaches had, in the words of Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, "plucked out the eyes" of Iraq's Soviet-supplied air defenses.
Nearly 100 allied planes, arriving twenty-two minutes after the raid, roared through the gaping hole in Iraq's network and raced north to strike critical, first-night targets. Air Force F-117s, relying on their stealthiness, already had penetrated Iraqi airspace and were nearing Baghdad by the time the Apaches fired, but destruction of the early warning sites greatly eased the task of nonstealthy allied planes sent into action that night.
Looking Skyward
Without doubt, they got the drop on the Iraqis, who were looking skyward for fast movers, not for helicopters. It is believed they noticed something resembling "ground clutter" on their screens about two minutes before they were hit but were still trying to figure it out when the Hellfires arrived.
"OK, I've got the target area," CW02 Thomas "Tip" O'Neal told his pilot, CW03 Jones, when their Apache was still seven miles from the radar sites.
"Slowing back," said Jones, asking the range.
"I'm showing 12.2 [kilometers]."
"I'll keep moving."
"I've got one of the big 'uns all the way on the right."
Moving the FLIR lens, CW03 Jones closed in on the first building they must hit. "There's the generator right there."
"OK."
"Aha!"
"Party in ten!" said Lieutenant Drew from the lead AH-64. The FLIR screen flashed "LAUNCH." A clock counted down the missile's flight time. An Iraqi technician, seeing flashes in the distance as he emerged from a building, ran back inside. A dozen figures ran out other doors.
Then chaos engulfed the radar station. "Just incessant fire," recalls Colonel Cody. "Missile after missile, rocket after rocket, 30-mm after 30-mm coming from four aircraft that they [couldn't] even see. From the first shot, they were just running for cover. When we closed in to 4,000 meters, we engaged their ZPUs [Soviet antiaircraft machine guns] and antiaircraft artillery and put them out."
Colonel Cody's Apache was not far from that of his wingman, Lieutenant Drew, when they started to attack. The chaos intensified, says Colonel Cody, "when he [the wingman] puts out two or three rockets and everything lights up. You're sitting there looking at your FLIR and then your naked eye picks up these flashes. You had to be very, very careful not to mistake that [for] ground fire coming at you.
"We took those things down in three and a half to four and a half minutes, four aircraft flying in pretty close proximity to each other."
They got close to the targets, too. "Some of us got closer than 800 meters when we finished. We used 2,000 meters as a breakpoint, but, depending on what our targets looked like, as we were breaking and as we were being engaged, some of us moved in a little closer and then broke." After shutting down the sites, they moved to other phases of the attack. "If all we did was hit [the generator], they could go to secondary power," explained Colonel Cody. "We had a follow-on mission statement of putting [the base] down for a couple of days so the Air Force wouldn't have to go in and retarget it. Then our follow-on was to totally destroy it. . . . We did all of the above. "
As the Apaches broke and headed back, they had to stay low. Air Force lighters were coming in over their heads.
Apache team leaders passed the good news to the Pave Lows' crews, who passed it to Central Command headquarters. The code words-- "California AAA" and "Nebraska AAA"--meant the primary targets had been destroyed, the entire bases had been destroyed

There were helicopters in the Gulf that had more than enough firepower to eliminate the dishes quickly, however--Army Apaches. Decked out with Hellfire missiles and 30mm chain guns, the AH-64s could make short work of the installations.
If they could find them. Though their pilots were well-versed in night fighting, the Apache helicopters were primarily designed for engagements with tanks and armored formations, which are easy to find, even at night. The desert in that part of the world is empty, landmarks arc virtually nonexistent, and Apaches did not come equipped with the sophisticated navigation and sensor equipment aboard the Air Force birds. The Apaches would have trouble finding the targets at night.
The obvious solution was to combine Pave Lows (for guidance) with Apaches (for firepower). And that was the solution chosen. The Pave Lows would lead the Apaches to the sites, then step aside as their smaller brethren went to work. A simple notion, yet one that had never been tried, even in training. And it wasn't simply a situation where Air Force guys would climb in their birds, take off, and let the Army guys hang on to their tails. Different service cultures had to be coordinated; likewise communications gear. There were other, even more practical, problems: The Apaches' limited range would have to be increased, and their weapons, optimized for armor attacks, would have to be tested for effectiveness against radars and their vans.
The Apache commander, Lieutenant Colonel Dick Cody, quickly came on board and adapted his unit's tactics and aircraft for the mission. He welded 1,500-gallon tanks to the bottom of his helos and conducted live-fire practice sessions with Hellfire antitank missiles to make sure they would explode when striking the comparatively soft targets.
They did. The plan--called EAGER ANVIL--proceeded.

It must have been something similar to when I saved those people from being run over by that speeding car a few years back. That must have been 2002. I was a volunteer at the Danskin triathlon. I puzzled over that for a long time. I just couldn't put my finger on something about that. My mind had been blank but yet I acted with such split-second decisiveness to keep them from getting splattered by that car.

American U-2 spy plane shot down
An American U-2 spy plane is shot down while conducting espionage over the Soviet Union. The incident derailed an important summit meeting between President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev that was scheduled for later that month.
The U-2 spy plane was the brainchild of the Central Intelligence Agency, and it was a sophisticated technological marvel. Traveling at altitudes of up to 70,000 feet, the aircraft was equipped with state-of-the-art photography equipment that could, the CIA boasted, take high-resolution pictures of headlines in Russian newspapers as it flew overhead. Flights over the Soviet Union began in mid-1956. The CIA assured President Eisenhower that the Soviets did not possess anti-aircraft weapons sophisticated enough to shoot down the high-altitude planes.
On May 1, 1960, a U-2 flight piloted by Francis Gary Powers disappeared while on a flight over Russia. The CIA reassured the president that, even if the plane had been shot down, it was equipped with self-destruct mechanisms that would render any wreckage unrecognizable and the pilot was instructed to kill himself in such a situation. Based on this information, the U.S. government issued a cover statement indicating that a weather plane had veered off course and supposedly crashed somewhere in the Soviet Union. With no small degree of pleasure, Khrushchev pulled off one of the most dramatic moments of the Cold War by producing not only the mostly-intact wreckage of the U-2, but also the captured pilot-very much alive. A chagrined Eisenhower had to publicly admit that it was indeed a U.S. spy plane.
On May 16, a major summit between the United States, the Soviet Union, Great Britain, and France began in Paris. Issues to be discussed included the status of Berlin and nuclear arms control. As the meeting opened, Khrushchev launched into a tirade against the United States and Eisenhower and then stormed out of the summit. The meeting collapsed immediately and the summit was called off. Eisenhower considered the "stupid U-2 mess" one of the worst debacles of his presidency. The pilot, Francis Gary Powers, was released in 1962 in exchange for a captured Soviet spy.

Everyone watching on the ground, and Greco watching from his helicopter, thought that there would be few, if any, survivors. Other parts of the plane - the nose section and much of the rear - had seemed to disintegrate.
"We could not believe anybody could walk away from it," Greco said.
But a section in the middle, containing Rows 9 through 21, had broken away intact, rolled over and skidded to a stop in a cornfield. And in the two minutes after the crash, about 70 people would walk away from it.
Not right away, though. Inside that section, Rehnberg and several dozen other passengers were left hanging upside down. After managing to release
himself, Rehnberg fell to the floor. "I saw light in the aisle and tried to go forward toward the cabin."
Treber saw smoke and fire outside and heard a small explosion. But she and the passengers around her were virtually unscathed; all of them escaped on their own, into the cornfield, through an end of the broken plane body. Treber ran as fast as she could in her two-inch red high heels, while people around her shouted, "It's going to go! We have to get out!"
Hudspeth, too, ran out into the corn stalks, which seemed to her as if they must be 10 feet tall.

He said the Sirri was destroyed by the shelling of 5-inch guns, which caused a major fire.
It was at the Sirri location, Pentagon officials said, that the U.S. vessels first came under attack. They said the Iranian missile boat Joshan, a 10-year-old, 154-foot high-speed patrol craft, ignored warnings from U.S. ships and ``fired at us.``

It also noted that the bottom-up, peer-to-peer connectivity among Facebook users makes it easier for businesses to connect their products with consumers.

Plot Summary
Returning from the first manned mission to Mars, a crew of American astronauts find themselves in for a very rough ride when their craft comes into contact with a cosmic anomaly that causes the ship to reach a tremendous speed. When they crash land, they're not quite sure where they are. They soon find a graveyard that confirms they're on Earth - but far into the future. An atomic war has destroyed much of humankind and the four astronauts are attacked by mutants. They escape into a cave and are rescued by a community of humans who have made a life for themselves underground. They are made welcome but one of leaders of the underground civilization sees them as a risk to his ambitions and sets about to have them banished.

Good evening:
This is the 37th time I have spoken to you from this office, where so many decisions have been made that shaped the history of this Nation. Each time I have done so to discuss with you some matter that I believe affected the national interest.
In all the decisions I have made in my public life, I have always tried to do what was best for the Nation. Throughout the long and difficult period of Watergate, I have felt it was my duty to persevere, to make every possible effort to complete the term of office to which you elected me.
In the past few days, however, it has become evident to me that I no longer have a strong enough political base in the Congress to justify continuing that effort. As long as there was such a base, I felt strongly that it was necessary to see the constitutional process through to its conclusion, that to do otherwise would be unfaithful to the spirit of that deliberately difficult process and a dangerously destabilizing precedent for the future.
But with the disappearance of that base, I now believe that the constitutional purpose has been served, and there is no longer a need for the process to be prolonged.
I would have preferred to carry through to the finish, whatever the personal agony it would have involved, and my family unanimously urged me to do so. But the interests of the Nation must always come before any personal considerations.
From the discussions I have had with Congressional and other leaders, I have concluded that because of the Watergate matter, I might not have the support of the Congress that I would consider necessary to back the very difficult decisions and carry out the duties of this office in the way the interests of the Nation will require.
I have never been a quitter. To leave office before my term is completed is abhorrent to every instinct in my body. But as President, I must put the interests of America first. America needs a full-time President and a full-time Congress, particularly at this time with problems we face at home and abroad.
To continue to fight through the months ahead for my personal vindication would almost totally absorb the time and attention of both the President and the Congress in a period when our entire focus should be on the great issues of peace abroad and prosperity without inflation at home.
Therefore, I shall resign the Presidency effective at noon tomorrow.
