I was supposed to report aboard the Taylor on December 18th. But I took a flight to Charleston instead and then I had to spend the night at the Logan airport in Boston and so I did not report until the next day, the 19th, to the ship where it was still located in the shipyards of Bath Maine. That date 18 December 1984, I recall still, was the official date on my official United States Navy orders. I was supposed to report for permanent assignment on that date but I went to Charleston South Carolina, which was the scheduled homeport for my ship, printed on my orders, and I can still recall that night the 18th standing there at a military liaison kiosk in the old airport in Charleston and the USN sailor manning that post along with a marine let me use the telephone to call the ship and I spoke to the Boatswain Mate Chief Petty Officer and I told him where I was and that I was leaving Charleston right then to fly to Portland Maine. I still had no idea where the shipyard was located from there. I remember the long night in the airport in Boston waiting for the next morning when the flights resumed and I then flew into Portland in an airplane and I was the only passenger on the flight.

Not too long ago one of our Ambassadors visited an American armored cavalry regiment stationed on the NATO line in Germany. As he returned to his helicopter, he was followed by a young 19-year-old trooper. The trooper asked him if he could get a message to the President. Well, the Ambassador said that sometimes getting messages to the President was part of his job. And the young trooper then said, "Will you tell him we're proud to be here, and we ain't scared of nothin."
Well, not long ago the Ambassador was in Washington and told me the sequel to that incident. I'd repeated a story in a talk that was carried on our Voice of America radio program, and there in that base in Germany the young trooper heard the broadcast and knew that I'd received his message. His commanding officer said that he ran down the company street yelling: "The system works! The system works!"
