50 Years On, 'Mockingbird' Still Sings America's Song

Fifty years ago, Harper Lee had the kind of success that most writers only dream about: Shortly after her novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, was published on July 11, 1960, it hit the best-seller lists. In 1961, it won a Pulitzer Prize, and in 1962, it was made into an Academy Award-winning film. It has never gone out of print.

On this day in 1960, the classic novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee was published for the first time. The novel, loosely based on observations and occurrences near Lee’s hometown when she was 10 years old, won the Pulitzer Prize and became one of the most influential books of the century.

Remembering CIA's Heroes: Chiyoki Ikeda

This is a part of our series about CIA employees who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Here we will look at the lives of the men and women who have died while serving their country.

Currently, there are 89 stars carved into the marble of the CIA Memorial Wall. The wall stands as a silent, simple memorial to those employees “who gave their lives in the service of their country.” The CIA has released the names of 54 employees; the names of the remaining 35 officers must remain secret, even in death.

Chiyoki Ikeda

During his six years working for the Central Intelligence Agency, Chiyoki “Chick” Ikeda was known for his talent with languages. He was also known as a true patriot.

On March 17, 1960, Ikeda died in a plane crash near Tell City, Indiana, while on a temporary duty assignment.


The Ultimate Sacrifice

On March 17, 1960, Ikeda was on a temporary duty assignment in the United States. That day, he was a passenger on Northwest Airlines Flight 710, which was leaving Chicago. The plane, carrying 63 passengers, crashed near Tell City, Indiana. Everyone aboard the plane was killed.

Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 710, a Lockheed L-188 Electra, disintegrated in-flight and crashed near Cannelton, Indiana (10 miles east of Tell City, Indiana) on March 17, 1960. The flight carried 57 passengers and 6 crew members. There were no survivors.


Crash and causes

Flight 710 was a regularly scheduled flight departing Minneapolis-St. Paul to Miami with a stop at Chicago Midway Airport. Radio contact with the Indianapolis Control Center was made at approximately 3:00 pm local time. About 15 minutes later, witnesses reported seeing the airplane break into two pieces with the right wing falling as one piece and the remainder of the craft plunging to earth near Cannelton in southern Indiana.

At the time, investigators organized by the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) worked on three major theories:

—That a bomber blew up the plane and its passengers and crew members as they passed over southern Indiana on a Chicago-to-Miami flight.

—That violent air turbulence could have destroyed the craft, the first Electra purchased by Northwest and in service only seven months. Such turbulence was reported over southern Indiana at about the time of the crash.

—That the plane disintegrated through "metal fatigue" which had caused other crashes of high-speed airliners recently. The crash was the third Electra disaster in a little more than a year and the third unexplained accident in four months. It came within days of the Washington hearings on the death of 34 persons in a National Airlines plane crash near Bolivia, North Carolina (that disaster was later discovered to have been due to a bomb).

"Obviously, this plane broke up in the air," CAB spokesman Edward Slattery said at the time. "It is too early to tell the cause of the tragedy, but we will investigate all possibilities, including a bomb." (Edwardsville Examiner, March 19, 1960)

The New York Times reported that at 5:44 P.M., an hour and a half after news of the crash in the snow-covered Indiana-Kentucky border country, an anonymous caller told the Chicago police that a bomb had been placed aboard a plane at Midway Airport. The police searched the airport, but found nothing and said that they were convinced the call was a prank. The operator said she thought the caller was a young teenager.

The craft's fuselage plunged into an Ohio River country farm at a speed of over 600 miles per hour and disintegrated. The Federal Bureau of Investigation sent agents to the scene to determine whether there was any violation of Federal law. Such an investigation would include the possibility of sabotage. State Police Sgt. Joe O'Brien said that the plane was last heard from over Scotland, Indiana, about 70 miles (110 km) from the crash site. He said the pilot, Capt. Edgar LaParle, had reported rumble and the weather was very muggy and cloudy.

So much wreckage rained over a wide area, as the plane came apart in the air, that it was first believed that two planes had collided. However, the Federal Aviation Agency and the State Police said that all the pieces they could find were from one plane — Northwest's Lockheed Electra Flight 710. A wing and two engines of the wrecked turboprop were found about five miles (8 km) from the place where the plane's fuselage hit. Almost nothing was left of the craft. Hours after the crash, a column of blue-gray smoke still rose from the crater, about 25 ft (7.6 m) deep and 40 ft (12 m) wide.

Among the victims were Judge John A. Sharbaro of Chicago, 71-year-old jurist who helped prosecute Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb for the "crime of the century" murder of little Bobby Franks in 1924; Marty Collins Chalfen the wife of Morris Chalfen and their three children, producer of the Holiday on Ice skating shows (they were flying from their Minneapolis home to a Florida vacation); Masami Nakamura, 43, a Tokyo police superintendent touring the United States; Chiyoki Ikeda, 39, a CIA training commander

It is also our tradition on Memorial Day to recognize the addition of a new star to the Memorial Wall. The star was engraved last October 15. It belongs to Chiyoki “Chick” Ikeda. He was killed in the line of duty four decades ago in an air accident. Chick Ikeda knew the price of patriotism. He paid it willingly and dearly. In September 1940, Chick, who possessed dual citizenship, chose to pledge his full allegiance to the United States and renounced his Japanese citizenship, even at a time when our Nisei were shamefully declared “enemy aliens.” In 1943, when President Roosevelt established an all Nisei combat team, Chick joined the famous 442nd. He was selected for behind-the-lines duty in China [with the OSS] and was decorated with a Bronze Star. After the war, he fulfilled various military assignments, then joined the Agency in 1954, where he served with distinction until his death in 1960. The work Chick Ikeda did building strategic liaison relationships for the Agency must still remain unspoken, for it continues to yield valuable dividends today. We are honored to have Mrs. Ikeda, their sons George and John, and Senator Akaka here today.

McNaughton’s history of Japanese American linguists is so engrossing that his ending the story in 1946, on page 456, feels abrupt. The author does define his subject as Nisei linguists in World War II, but writing even an epilogue of “what happened next” would have been illuminating. Left untold are tales of Nisei veterans of the Second World War interrogating North Korean prisoners in Japanese in the Korean War, executing CIC operations against the Japanese Communist Party and other targets during the occupation, and serving down through the years of the Cold War in various components of the military and CIA. Chiyoki “Chick” Ikeda, who earned a star on the CIA Memorial Wall, is one good example. Ikeda became an important officer in the latter half of the 1950s in the Directorate of Operations and served in a variety of positions, including in Japan, until his death in 1960. Ikeda managed a counterintelligence program that detected and turned Soviet agents among the tens of thousands of Japanese prisoners of war repatriated from the Soviet Union during 1947–48.

The ultimate in toys for boys: Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen buys his own MiG-29 jet fighter!

First he paid out $70million on his local basketball team, then there was the $200million on a luxurious super yacht.

Now Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has outdone even his vast array of toys after spending millions of dollars on his very own MiG-29 jet fighter.

Mr Allen - worth an estimated $13.5billion - bought the Soviet-designed craft after it was restored by aviation enthusiast John Sessions.

It is currently on display at his private museum in Everett, Washington, but once all the paperwork has been finished it will be flown to an undisclosed location for him to enjoy in private.

It is not clear if Mr Allen intends to get in the cockpit, but it is thought to be in working order. The MiG had been part of the Ukrainian air force before being bought by Sessions.

Referring to Mr Allen’s company Vulcan Warbirds which did the deal, Sessions said: ‘I think it's fair to say the purchaser behind all that is Paul Allen.

‘They've been interested in a MiG-29 for a long time.’

Asked if Allen wanted to fly it, he said: ‘I know there's some interest. He hasn't said he's ready for his flight.’
