Goddamn I cannot believe how much a waste this report is because so many of you sheep out there will ignore this incredible report. This is what should dominate the national television news tonight. Those with cable television should be tuning into CNN later today and at the beginning of every 30-minute television news cycle see the news reporters vomiting with rage at what they read here right now in this report.

Gates finally gets his Harvard degree

By The Associated Press

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Harvard University's most famous dropout finally got his college degree.

Bill Gates, who co-founded Microsoft Corp. and became the world's richest man after leaving Harvard in 1975, returned today to accept an honorary degree and speak at the school's 356th commencement.

"I will be changing my job next year," Gates said, referring to his plan to give up his day-to-day role at Microsoft in July 2008. "It will be nice to finally have a college degree on my resume."

Gates has been concentrating on philanthropy, through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation he began with his wife.

"It's revolting to learn that some lives are seen as worth saving and others are not," Gates said.

THE WHITE HOUSE

PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH

For Immediate Release

Office of the Press Secretary

June 8, 2007

Statement by the President

General Peter Pace has served our Nation with great distinction for forty years. He is an outstanding Marine -- and he made history as the first Marine to serve as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

As Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Pete's job has been to help ensure that America's military forces are prepared to meet the threats of this new century. This is a difficult task in a time of peace. Pete Pace has done it in a time of war -- and he has done it superbly. As part of our senior military leadership, Pete has helped oversee the liberation of more than 50 million people. I have relied on his unvarnished military judgment, and I value his candor, his integrity, and his friendship.

Pete's life is the story of the American Dream. He grew up in an immigrant family, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy -- and went on to hold the highest position in our Armed Forces. He is a man of character who leads by example. I thank his wife, Lynne, who knows from long experience that military service is a family commitment. I also thank his son, Peter, and his daughter, Tiffany. America has been blessed by Pete's lifetime of service. And I wish all the best for the Pace family as this good man begins a new chapter in his life.

I am pleased to accept the recommendation of Secretary Gates that I nominate Admiral Michael Mullen to succeed General Pace. Admiral Mullen has performed ably as Chief of Naval Operations. He holds degrees from the U.S. Naval Academy, the Harvard Business School, and the Naval Postgraduate School. He has served ably in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets -- as well as in both Allied and Joint Commands. And when he is confirmed by the United States Senate, he will make a superb Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Admiral Edmund Giambastiani has been a strong and effective vice chairman. He is an officer of vision and determination, and he has served at a time of unprecedented danger for America. His time in the Joint Chiefs capped an exemplary military career. As Commander of the U.S. Joint Forces Command in Norfolk, he helped transform our Nation's military so it could better face the new threats of a new century. And he did the same for NATO while serving as its first Supreme Allied Commander, Transformation.

The Admiral is a highly decorated officer, but he is most proud of his unit awards and commendations -- because they represent team accomplishments. I thank his wife, Cindy ... his daughter, Cathie ... and his son, Pete, for the support they have provided. I salute Admiral G for his long career of distinguished service. He has earned the thanks of a grateful Nation.

I am also pleased to announce that I am accepting Secretary Gates' recommendation to nominate General James E. Cartwright as the new vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. General Cartwright is a Marine Corps pilot who serves as Commander, United States Strategic Command -- where he has done an outstanding job managing America's global strategic forces. In that role, he is responsible for the global command and control of U.S. Strategic Forces. He is an exceptional officer, and when he is confirmed by the Senate, he will be an outstanding Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Chairman of Joint Chiefs out

Gates: We couldn't afford contentious Iraq hearing

June 09, 2007 By Peter Spiegel, Tribune Newspapers: Los Angeles Times; Times staff writer James Gerstenzang in Rome contributed to this report.

WASHINGTON — Divisions over the Iraq war led Defense Secretary Robert Gates to announce Friday he will replace Marine Gen. Peter Pace as the nation's top uniformed officer.

The military, Gates said, could not afford the confirmation fight Pace would face if he were nominated for a second term as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

"I just think that a divisive ordeal at this point is not in the interests of the country or of our military services," Gates said. "I wish that were not the case. I wish it were not necessary to make a decision like this, but I think it's a realistic appraisal of where we are."

Pace will be the first chairman of the Joint Chiefs not to serve a second term since Lyndon Johnson's administration. His departure underscores the growing political crisis facing the Bush administration over the Iraq war.

Gates announced he would recommend Adm. Michael Mullen, a Los Angeles native who is chief of naval operations, to become Joint Chiefs chairman when Pace's term runs out at the end of September.

For Gates, the decision to appoint Mullen marked a major reversal.

At a Pentagon news conference, Gates said that until a few weeks ago, he had intended to renominate Pace for a second two-year term. But in speaking with Republican and Democratic senators, he was told Pace would face contentious questioning about the Bush administration's conduct of the Iraq war.

End of military career

For Pace, the decision closes a military career that took him from service in Vietnam to the inner sanctum of former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's war-planning unit.

Before becoming chairman in 2005, Pace spent four years as the Joint Chiefs' vice chairman. As a result, he became closely identified with Rumsfeld and the planning for the Iraq invasion.

Although mostly respected within the armed services, Pace has been criticized for not standing up more assertively to his civilian bosses during the run-up to war and in the postinvasion period. Pace's spokeswoman said he would not comment on Gates' decision.

"Pace is going to be remembered as a likable, loyal officer who carried out the wishes of an unpopular administration without challenging them, because he thought it was his responsibility," said Loren Thompson, an analyst at the Lexington Institute, a military think tank in Virginia.

Gates also announced he would recommend Marine Gen. James Cartwright, head of U.S. Strategic Command, to become vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs.

Cartwright replaces Adm. Edmund Giambastiani, who announced his retirement last week. Giambastiani was also closely tied to Rumsfeld and served as the former secretary's first senior military adviser.

White House officials traveling with Bush at the G-8 summit in Germany said Gates had informed the president a little over two weeks ago that his discussions with senators had not gone well and recommended against choosing Pace again.

Gates called National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley on Thursday night to alert him of his decision, and Hadley told Bush on Friday morning, according to the White House.

"America has been blessed by Pete's lifetime of service," Bush said in a statement.

Comment about gays

Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, was among the lawmakers Gates consulted. Levin said he told Gates that he and other senators likely would focus on decisions made over the past four years.

Pace also was likely to face questions over his assertion before the Chicago Tribune editorial board in March that allowing gays into the military would be condoning behavior he considered immoral.

Republicans said that while some of the criticisms aimed at Pace might have been justified, the confirmation hearings would have descended into political theater.

"At a time when we need to figure out how to go forward, we would have been spending all of our time retrying mistakes of the past," said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), a member of the Armed Services Committee.

By most accounts, Gates grew close to Pace, and on Friday, Gates said he hoped they remained friends. "I have thoroughly enjoyed working with him, trust him completely and value his candor and his willingness to speak his mind," Gates said.

Levin said he believed Mullen was well-qualified to replace Pace. He is widely viewed within the Pentagon as a problem-solver who has gone out of his way to look after quality-of-life issues within the Navy. Gates said he chose Mullen at the recommendation of Pace.

Like other senior Navy admirals of his generation, Mullen is viewed as a strong advocate of engaging diplomatically with potential adversaries, such as Iran and China, so that misunderstandings do not lead to military confrontations.

Dear Senator Murray,

I got that impression one day when I was in Spokane. I was watching CNN or something one day and I saw Bush making some comments about something. I commented out loud to myself that he looked terrified or something like that. For a while after that, the reporters were talking about how his press conferences were not going to be televised. I suspect, strongly, that I have been secretly monitored in the places I live and they have been listening to every sound I make. For some reason, Bush has an interest in what I say to myself and when I commented about him looking scared they decided he shouldn’t be seen for awhile until he could get control of himself. They wouldn’t want to embolden the terrorists by showing that he was getting rattled by it all. So maybe it isn’t the government that has been spying on me, it is some kind of stalker that is reporting the information they collect to websites. And maybe Bush knows who I am because he is tied into those gay websites too like Jim West and that is how he knows about me. I have some other evidence to support my theory, but needless to say he isn’t going to risk being outed like West was.

WAITRESS: Long time, Doc.

McCOY: Yeah. ...Anybody been looking for me?

WAITRESS: I have, ...but what's the use? What'll it be?

McCOY: Altair water.

WAITRESS: That's not your usual poison.

McCOY: To expect one to order poison in a bar is not logical.

WAITRESS: Got it.

ALIEN: To your planet, welcome.

McCOY: I think that's my line, stranger.

ALIEN: Oh, forgive. I here am new. But you are known, being McCoy from Enterprise.

McCOY: You have me at a disadvantage, sir.

ALIEN: I name not important. You seek I. Message received. Available ship stands by.

McCOY: How much and how soon?

ALIEN: How soon is now. How much is where?

McCOY: Somewhere in the Mutara Sector.

ALIEN: Oh. Mutara restricted. Take permits many. Money, more.

McCOY: There aren't going to be any damn permits! How can you get a permit to do a damn illegal thing?

TREATY ON THE PROHIBITION OF THE EMPLACEMENT OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS AND OTHER WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION ON THE SEABED AND THE OCEAN FLOOR AND IN THE SUBSOIL THEREOF

Like the Antarctic Treaty, the Outer Space Treaty, and the Latin American Nuclear-Free Zone, the Seabed Treaty sought to prevent the introduction of international conflict and nuclear weapons into an area hitherto free of them. Reaching agreement on the seabed, however, involved problems not met in framing the other two agreements.

In the 1960s, advances in the technology of oceanography and greatly increased interest in the vast and virtually untapped resources of the ocean floor led to concern that the absence of clearly established rules of law might lead to strife. And there were concurrent fears that nations might use the seabed as a new environment for military installations, including those capable of launching nuclear weapons.

In keeping with a proposal submitted to the U.N. Secretary General by Ambassador Pardo of Malta in August 1967, the U.N. General Assembly, on December 18, 1967, established an ad hoc committee to study ways of reserving the seabed for peaceful purposes, with the objective of ensuring "that the exploration and use of the seabed and the ocean floor should be conducted in accordance with the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations, in the interests of maintaining international peace and security and for the benefit of all mankind."

The Seabed Arms Control Treaty was opened for signature in Washington, London, and Moscow on February 11, 1971. It entered into force May 18, 1972, when the United States, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, and more than 22 nations had deposited instruments of ratification.

Glenn T. Seaborg

Glenn T. Seaborg, in full Glenn Theodore Seaborg (born April 19, 1912, Ishpeming, Mich., U.S.—died Feb. 25, 1999, Lafayette, Calif.), American nuclear chemist best known for his work on isolating and identifying transuranium elements (those heavier than uranium). He shared the 1951 Nobel Prize for Chemistry with Edwin Mattison McMillan for their independent discoveries of transuranium elements. Seaborgium was named in his honour, making him the only person for whom a chemical element was named during his lifetime.

Seaborg, together with Arthur C. Wahl and Joseph W. Kennedy, produced and identified the second known transuranium element, plutonium (atomic number 94), on Feb. 23, 1941, in Room 307 of Gilman Hall, which is now a National Historic Landmark. (McMillan had discovered the first transuranium element, neptunium [atomic number 93], the previous year at Berkeley.) In addition to plutonium, best known for its use as a fuel in certain types of nuclear reactors and as an ingredient in some nuclear weapons

The early studies of plutonium were carried out on a tracer scale with amounts too small to be weighed. The first visible amount of plutonium (about a millionth of a gram of plutonium fluoride) was isolated by Seaborg, Burris B. Cunningham, and Louis B. Werner on Aug. 20, 1942. During World War II, which Seaborg spent as a section chief at the University of Chicago Metallurgical Laboratory, the first industrial production of plutonium was undertaken in newly devised uranium reactors, and he had the primary responsibility for isolating plutonium from the reaction products and scaling up its extraction from ultramicroscopic laboratory amounts to a full-scale plant (the Hanford Engineering Works in Washington) by what he called “surely the greatest scale-up factor [10 billion] ever attempted.”

Seaborg returned to Berkeley in 1946, where he was involved in the discovery of berkelium and succeeding elements. He was the first scientist named chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission (1961–71), and the U.S. nuclear-weapons and power industry developed rapidly during his tenure.

THE FATE OF FRANCIS GARY POWERS

Downed U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers underwent extensive interrogation at the hands of the Soviets. His instructions from the CIA on what to do in event of capture were meager, and he had been told that he might as well tell the Soviets whatever they wanted to know because they could get the information from his aircraft anyway Nevertheless, Powers tried to conceal as much classified information as possible while giving the appearance of cooperating with his captors. To extract the maximum propaganda value from the U-2 Affair, the Soviets prepared an elaborate show trial for Powers, which began on 17 August 1960 Powers continued to conceal as much information as possible

http://www.royal.gov.uk/ImagesandBroadcasts/TheQueensChristmasBroadcasts/ChristmasBroadcasts/ChristmasBroadcast1989.aspx

The official website of The British Monarchy

Christmas Broadcast 1989

The Queen's Christmas Broadcast in 1989 included film from a Save the Children Fund children's concert in the Royal Albert Hall. As damage to the environment continued to be a cause of global concern, The Queen used her message to urge children to respect and protect their world.

I usually make my Christmas Broadcast to the Commonwealth from Windsor or Buckingham Palace.

This year I thought I would use the presence of two thousand children at this occasion organised by Save the Children Fund in the Albert Hall, here in the heart of London, to send this special message to the children of the Commonwealth.

Those of you present are the immediate audience for my broadcast, but I am also speaking by radio and television to people throughout the world.

All parents would like their children to grow up in peace and tranquillity, but for most of this century the people of this world have had to live through bewildering changes and upheavals. Some of the changes have been for the better, but others might even threaten the world we live in.

There are some children who are much less fortunate than others, for they come from countries where nature makes life very hard, with floods and droughts and other disasters destroying crops, making it very difficult to find enough for everyone to eat. Quite a lot of you have written to me during the last year or so, saying how worried you are about the future of our planet.

Many of you will have heard of the greenhouse effect, and perhaps you've heard too about even more urgent problems caused by the pollution of our rivers and seas and the cutting down of the great forests. These problems don't affect just the countries where they are happening and they make neighbourly co-operation throughout the world a pressing necessity.

With all your lives before you, I am sure that you take an optimistic view of the future. But it is already too late to prevent all forms of damage to the natural world. Some species of wild plants and animals are, sadly, bound to become extinct. But the great thing to remember is that it is not too late to reduce the damage if we change attitudes and behaviour.

You've all seen pictures of the earth taken from space. Unlike all the other planets in the solar system, earth shimmers green and blue in the sunlight and looks a very pleasant place to live.

These pictures should remind us that the future of all life on earth depends on how we behave towards one another, and how we treat the plants and the animals that share our world with us.

Men and women have shown themselves to be very clever at inventing things, right back to the time when they found out how much easier it was to move things about on wheels, up to the present time when rockets and computers make it possible for people to travel away from our world into the mystery of space.

But these technical skills are not enough by themselves. They can only come to the rescue of the planet if we also learn to live by the golden rule which Jesus Christ taught us - "love thy neighbour as thyself".

Many of you will have heard the story of the Good Samaritan, and of how Christ answered the question (from a clever lawyer who was trying to catch him out) "who is my neighbour?".

Jesus told of the traveller who was mugged and left injured on the roadside where several important people saw him, and passed by without stopping to help.

His neighbour was the man who did stop, cared for him, and made sure he was being well looked after before he resumed his own journey.

It's not very difficult to apply that story to our own times and to work out that our neighbours are those of our friends, or complete strangers, who need a helping hand. Do you think they might also be some of the living species threatened by spoiled rivers, or some of the children in places like Ethiopia and Sudan who don't have enough to eat?

The exciting news of the last few months has been the way in which people in both East and West Europe have begun to think about the future in a less unfriendly way - more as neighbours.

It's still hard for us to be sure what is going to happen as a result of these great events, but it would be splendid to think that in the last years of the twentieth century Christ's message about loving our neighbours as ourselves might at last be heeded.

If it is, they'll be good years for you to grow up in. If we can reduce selfishness and jealousy, dishonesty and injustice, the nineties can become a time of peace and tranquillity for children and grown-ups, and a time for working together for the benefit of our planet as a whole.

You children have something to give us which is priceless. You can still look at the world with a sense of wonder and remind us grown-ups that life is wonderful and precious. Often a child's helplessness and vulnerability bring out the best in us.

Part of that 'best in us' could be a particular tenderness towards this earth which we share as human beings, all of us, and, together, as the nations of the world, will leave to our children and our children's children. We must be kind to it for their sake.

In the hope that we will be kind and loving to one another, not just on Christmas Day, but throughout the year, I wish you all a very Happy Christmas. God bless you.

Timeless

Stardate: 52143.6

Original Airdate: 18 November 1998

[2390 Delta Flyer - lab]

KIM: The Borg transmitter's online but I'm still waiting for the Doctor to give me the temporal coordinates.

EMH: Just a few more minutes.

CHAKOTAY [OC]: Speed it up. We've got a Galaxy class starship on our tail.

EMH: I'm working as fast as I can.

[2390 Delta Flyer]

TESSA: They're hailing us. You want to talk to them?

CHAKOTAY: Could buy us some time. Open a channel.

LAFORGE [on monitor]: This is Captain La Forge of the Starship Challenger. You seem to be in quite a hurry.

(Geordi is in a DS9 style uniform with an All Good Things comm.badge. He doesn't wear the VISOR any more, either.)

CHAKOTAY: You could say that.

LAFORGE [on monitor]: Why don't you shut down those impulse engines, drop your shields. Let's talk about this face-to-face.

CHAKOTAY: Mind if I take a rain check?

LAFORGE [on monitor]: As a matter of fact, I do. We know what you're about to attempt and we can't let that happen, so the Federation Council is willing to make you an offer. Hand over the Borg transmitter, stand down your vessel, and the charges of conspiracy will be dropped.

TESSA: That's not much of an offer.

Phoebe and I have probably been married by the Church of England since 1981. I'm guessing we had an American wedding in 1989.

Everytime I see that scene, I wish I could go back and get that kid's teddy bear and give it back to her.

That's why I was on all those Apollo flights. I needed as much time in space as possible because I was going to be in space for over 17 months on that mission to the comet.

If I could wish for anything for myself, I would wish that I could sit somewhere in the sun taking a nap with my arm around Phoebe and her head on my shoulder and I knew that some goddamned terrorist zombie wasn't going to try sneaking up on me.

Two of the last three scenes from a dream just before I awoke just now from a nap are too vague to describe in a lot of detail. In that first scene of the last three I was in a small room that I keep wanting to say was a bus terminal but it must have been a room with seats for, I don't know, about ten people and was a small room but I was vaguely aware of the tile floor and the walls and vaguely some chairs. I was also aware of something about having to be in that room for a long time and I seemed to be weighing the pros and cons of my existence in that room. I was also vaguely aware of the sense that I might have been hoarding food as I was in there. I am also vaguely aware that President Clinton might have also been in there. The second scene of the last three has mostly vanished from my mind by now as I was writing about that first scene. The last scene has me, vaguely, getting out of a car and waking towards a US military building that is the entrance to some kind of US installation and I can visualize the details fairly well and I am walking through the surrounding structures and I am going there to pass through a security checkpoint as though I am entering a US installation. I am vaguely aware of some familiar dialog but that is too vague to describe. I am holding up my identification for the people inside the building and although I cannot see anybody inside, as is probably the design of the building, I get the sense no one is really looking at my identification. I hold it up the entire time I walk around the outside of the building and I even walk to the entrance of that rectangular building and I see that the door is slightly ajar and I hold up my I.D. to that open door and I have the briefest moment where I look through the slightly open door and the inside is dark and I cannot see anything but I have the sense of a presence of a US military person inside at his post in that building. I decide they must have seen my I.D. and I continue walking. As I think about that scene I think to myself that I actually make a circle around that building and I am walking back to the car I came there in. As I walk back I have an image in my mind where I am looking at the text on the back of my I.D. card and the only details I remember is that there is a sections that is labeled "Votes" and the value associated with that caption is in the range of 11 million, 2 hundred thousand but I cannot remember the precise number or what it even means. When I get back to the car though, the people inside are different but I cannot now recall who was in there before and I am left with the vague sense that the difference is simply because the watch has changed, as though they are a different shift and are a different group there at work at their assignment, whatever that is. In the car this are Patrick Stewart at the wheel of what I guess is a black Camaro and next to him is William Shatner. I get into the front seat and I wonder if one of us should get in the back seat because William Shatner is all compressed in the middle and I see his feet as he stuggles to, I don't know. He seems real uncomfortable because of the seating. I notice Patrick Stewart is eating a sandwich. He mentions that he "started a strike" today although that is not his exact dialog but I know what he means because I think that was relevant to the second scene which I do not now recall. I think the dream might have lasted a few more seconds after that dialog but I am not certain. I had the sense that Patrick Stewart was trying to visually identify me as I walked to the car because I was wearing sunglasses. I think I took off the sunglasses as I got into the car. The dialog about the strike has something to do with a labor strike, and I thought that would jog my memory as I write this about that earlier scene but it seems to be completely gone from my memory now. I remember something about how a different term was being used for that strike but I do not now recall what was being used. Since that dialog I have also been wondering if it was actually a reference to that dialog in the 1991 film "Flight of the Intruder" and about how "Grafton" only needed a strike of the match.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 03/13/10 2:27 PM
That last scene in the car also reminds me of that dialog from "Mission To Mars" about the unlikely success of three captains in one ship.

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock

DAVID: Saavik. ...What is it?

SAAVIK: Spock's burial robe.

(there is an earth tremor and a piercing cry)

[Starfleet officer's lounge]

MORROW: No. Absolutely not, Jim, ...You are my best officer. But I am Commander, Starfleet, so I don't break rules!

KIRK: Don't quote rules to me. I'm talking about loyalty and sacrifice. One man who's died for us, another who has deep emotional problems.

MORROW: Now! Wait a minute! This business about Spock and McCoy. ...Honestly, I never understood Vulcan mysticism.

KIRK: You don't have to believe! I'm not even sure I believe. But even if there's a chance that Spock has an eternal soul ...then it's my responsibility.

MORROW: Yours?

KIRK: As surely as if it were my very own! Give me back the Enterprise! With Scotty's help I could...

MORROW: No, Jim! The Enterprise would never stand the pounding and you know it.

KIRK: Then I'll find a ship. I'll hire a ship.

MORROW: Out of the question, my friend! The Council has ordered that no one but the science team goes to Genesis! Jim, your life and your career stand for rationality, not intellectual chaos. Keep up this emotional behaviour and you'll lose everything. You'll destroy yourself! Do you understand me, Jim?

KIRK: I hear you. ...I had to try.

MORROW: Of course.

KIRK: Thanks for the drink.

MORROW: Any time.

(as Kirk leaves he is joined by Sulu and Chekov)

SULU: The word, sir?

KIRK: The word ...is no. I am therefore going anyway.
